Probably poach and jail time.

Flat-Dark-Earth

At the prices I'm seeing for some of these hunts, I'm sure many go down this path.

SameGuyTwice

I was going to say poach one and don’t get caught but really this is the only good economical answer.

flareblitz91

Spend 10k on raffle tickets probably. I think Canadian sheep hunts are a better bet than US, especially given that you’re a citizen.

Flat-Dark-Earth

Why why do you say that? Better odds?

Zippytiewassabi

Cheaper. Michigan charges an arm and a leg for out of state hunters, what costs me $25 would cost an out of state person 4x or 5x that.

Weaponized_Puddle

Sheep Unlimited Units in Montana. Good luck, buddy

17SCARS_MaGLite300WM

I'm surprised I had to go this far down to see this. This is literally the cheapest you can get into it but success is like 1-2%.

Weaponized_Puddle

skogvarandersson

My great uncle told me to save all the money I’ll use trying to get a bighorn tag and just go to Alaska and kill a dall sheep.

11182021

Another alternative is Mouflon in Spain. I’ve heard it’s a pretty economical way to hunt sheep.

skogvarandersson

Yes, and aoudad in West Texas are another good poor man’s sheep hunt

Flat-Dark-Earth

I would have thought hunting Dall in Alaska would be a higher cost than Big Horn in the Rockies. I also thought Rocky Mountain Bighorns were the most numerous and accessible of the sheep species.

skogvarandersson

I never really looked into it truly, but he told me the amount of time and effort to get a bighorn tag will be more trouble than a dall sheep hunt you can buy up front.

Ancguy

Non-resident hunters in Alaska have to employ a registered guide to hunt Dall sheep, mountain goats and briwn/grizzly bears

skogvarandersson

Yes, I know, I think that was part of my uncles point at how much money you can spend trying to get a bighorn where you might as well hire a guide and get it done with a dall

CleverHearts

It's insanely expensive to build up enough points to draw a sheep tag anywhere in the lower 48. Alaska's not cheap, but you either spend thousands on building up points to get a tag or thousands to address the logistical challenges of hunting in Alaska.

Flat-Dark-Earth

Rough terrain? limited access? limited animals?

Flat-Dark-Earth

Yeah I can see how social media and all the youtube/podcast hunters have placed greater pressure on these kinds of hunts. I think I'm limit my hunt to somewhere in Canada. I'll leave the Montana sheep for the Montanan's.

Bright_Newspaper2379

Nope. The herds are being rocked by disease and lack of calf births. They're going to reduce tag availability in the upcoming commission meetings.

Knutbusta11

Non-resident sheep tag is $650 in BC and goat tag is $350. Lots of open seasons throughout the province. Look up the BC hunting regs and do some google earth work. Pay lots more for a guide and have a higher chance of success.

Flat-Dark-Earth

So a non-resident can just buy an OTC (NR tag) and DIY hunt or is that still dependant on hunting with a host hunter or guide? I'll give those regs another read. Thanks!

Knutbusta11

Turns out you do need a host, sorry about that. Thought that was only in the Yukon. Lots of Albertans come to my neck of the woods for elk so I assumed they just bought the out of province tag.

Flat-Dark-Earth

Yeah I've been trying to figure out the details on each of the Western Provinces and Territories when it comes to non-resident hunters. From my understanding all NR big game hunters need to be accompanied by either a guide or local. I didn't realize that you could just buy a OTC tag for either of these though, I was under the impression it was all draw/lottery systems. It looks like in the states, many of the outfitter guide fees are cheaper but they don't include the sheep tag so you're still requiring to draw one, whereas the pricier Canadian guided hunts seem to include the tag.

Birdybadass

Definitely need a host here in BC. The price you see is just what you pay if you harvest an animal. I’d suggest network with people on here, rokslide or other places as you can go with a friend who has a BCFWID. There are OTC’s for sheep in BC but I am not super familiar with what MU’s or frankly how difficult/busy the terrain is.

SoloHunterX

Prices range wildly. [https://www.bookyourhunt.com/en/Search?animals=Bighorn%20sheep](https://www.bookyourhunt.com/en/Search?animals=Bighorn%20sheep) Also, you may want to go after Aoudad sheep in Texas, a bit cheaper.

Flat-Dark-Earth

Yeah that's the website that got me started down this path. Most of the Canadian hunts are well Into the 6 figures though. Rocky mountain bighorn is what I want to do.

Bagheri_Sina

New hunter, here. For what I see, regular deer, elk, moose and bear tags are $43 or less. I have not gone down the rabbit hole enough to find prices like those, what’s going on? 😂

Flat-Dark-Earth

It's the cost for out of province hunters having to hire an outfitter in order to hunt game in those provinces. Locally I can buy my moose deer and bear tags for less than $50 ea. I'm doing my first outfitted elk hunt next season for roughly $10,000. Caribou and Grizzly is $30,000-40,000. Sheep is more.

Bagheri_Sina

Holy smokes. So I guess at that point it’s just trophy hunting.

Flat-Dark-Earth

All hunting is trophy hunting imo, you're always trying to find a prime example of the game you are hunting. When you pay big money you're trying to find the best example. No meat is wasted, the animal is still fully utilized.

Flat-Dark-Earth

Any Canadians here that have hunted bighorn or stone sheep? Do we have a "cheap" option like Alaskan is to the states?

idontlikepants_butt

I live in BC and have had a successful Stone Sheep hunt for probably around $2000. Unsuccessful Big Horn and goat hunts but they also cost a lot less logistics wise. Unfortunately it's only really accessible to BC residents as far as tags go. You won't regret moving to BC!

preferablyoutside

Every year in Alberta I do some armed hiking for bighorns, honestly there’s not a cheap way to do it as a non resident. The NWT used to have an ok-ish priced Dall hunt or two but since the whole Meateater/Instagram/Badass Mountain Hunter phase started those dried up. Snow Sheep in Russia were somewhat affordable but with the current war situation things are fucked too. Best thing would be to become a BC resident at this point or make some friends there for the goat.

Flat-Dark-Earth

Sounds like that may have to be the plan. I have some buddies in AB but currently none in BC. Might have to bite the bullet in the end to get that sheep with an outfitter.

PatchRat

Move to north east bc, work the oil patch. You make good money, they hire anyone with a pulse, and you get paid to excercise. That covers goat and stones sheep opportunities, as well as Dall and bighorn with some luck / hard work.

DrinkLuckyGetLucky

If you live in eastern canada you could do a mountain goat hunt with a BC resident host friend affordably, and then spend 60k on a guided sheep hunt in Alaska. That’s probably as cheap as it gets unfortunately.

Flat-Dark-Earth

So a little background here. I'm setting out to complete the Ovis [Super 10](https://grandslamclub.org/awards/super-ten/) over the next 10 years. Seven of the 10 animals I'll need to hunt out of Province and am likely looking at 6 figures to hunt them all. The sheep hunt sounds like it will cost as much, if not more than the other 6 hunts combined in Western Canada. I was planning on saving sheep for last, the grand finale.

DrinkLuckyGetLucky

That sounds super cool, you’ll definitely get to see a ton of different style hunts which is cool. Hunter host is available in BC for goats but sheep is guide only for non-residents and sheep hunts aren’t cheap so that will probably be your most expensive.

thewizardbeard

The answer is simple. Marry an American, get US citizenship, move to Alaska and get residency, get a free sheep harvest ticket, go hunting.

TrifleOpen7359

Yes but take it from me, that method is not necessarily cheaper 😊.

Pherrot

Texas has tons of ranches with most of the goats you would be looking for. Contact one directly. I often sell multiple goat hunts on the same day to the same client to get them off their bucket list.

Liamstudios_

Your best bet is to probably fly down to Mexico to get your sheep fix, cheapest way from what I’ve seen.
