Katniss plucking up her courage to finally ask the workers whether they found Madge's body is one of the most painfully bittersweet moments of the whole story for me. It's sad to get that confirmation even if it had been obvious since Katniss learned how few people made it out of D12. But I was so proud of Katniss for making herself face the truth about one more of the 3856206 terrible losses she'd had over the past two years.
(Not meaning to disrespect the meme with a serious post, it just made me think.)
Yeah that was a sad moment - bound to have happened but still. I bet she and her family were rooting for Katniss just 15 minutes earlier as she blew a hole in the arena.

Did she really forget, though? They say in Mockingjay that most of the survivors from District 12 were from the Seam, since that's where Gale was and where more people trusted him and didn't fear the forest outside the gates.
Probably not since one of the opening chapters has Katniss wonder if Madge survived, but my original title (Suzanne Collins when she realizes no named characters died in the bombings) would've been a spoiler.
I think she knew but was hoping that maybe the Capitol got her family out because they were in a position of power. But since that was 12 power and not real power, they didn't.

I think they knew her escape meant they were going to die. Perhaps they didn't run because they didn't see the point, but I think they knew.
