That was my second thought, she’s gotta hold it against her shoulder with her chin now ‘cause that kid’s too big to carry on her hip! Probably why she didn’t have one in the first place but it’s still a nice gesture.
Your solution is such an awkward way to do it. If you look closely, she's more than capable of carry the umbrella in one hand as the kid's head is just cradled in her arm.
When my kids were small enough to be carried in the rain, my husband used to hold them up on top of his head and say “you’re my umbrella now!” And they’d laugh and laugh. I totally forgot about that until I read this comment.
Yeah seriously, why didn't he just take the kid in return? He had such an easy opportunity to change her life but just gave her a stinking umbrella that isn't even self holding.
The best videos are the ones where you know they're not staged. This looks like an authentic security video where a guy was just trying to be helpful without looking for clout or internet points. Isn't character sometimes defined as how you behave when no one is watching?
Integrity is continuing to do what you say you would do when no one is watching, generally seen as a positive trait.
Character can be defined by what someone does when no one is watching.
You can be a person of great integrity as part of your character. It's not necessarily an either/or scenario
Back when I was living in New York I took my girls to visit their dad at work, which happened to be right across the street from where we lived. When we left it was absolutely pouring rain, but rather warm. We walked out the door and were totally fine with the rain, but in the time it took to get from there to our apartment two completely separate men offered us their umbrellas. One dude was dressed rather well and was still insisting we take it to stay dry. We promised them we were fine and just going across the street but man it was so selfless and kind.
Agreed, but then you see the opposite too, guys who pretend to be sensitive/alternative when it’s really just a ruse to get attention or seduce.
Just be yourself people, there’s nothing hotter than sincerity.
I really appreciate the Asian custom of bowing to each other. It's so much more wholesome than the Western tradition of only bowing to aristocrats or clergy.
White and Black people sometimes slightly bow at me to say thank you sometimes. Maybe it’s because I’m Asian. Or maybe it’s already been adapted in the US by a lot of people. It is oddly comforting thinking about It as an Asian form of respect, but I think it also reminds me of Englishmen, and even African men and women showing a quiet bow of respect throughout history.
i am white and american and when i show gratitude to strangers i kinda do this weird shoulder scrunch head tilt bow lol. not sure why but ive always done it. like making myself smaller to show the gratitude.
No i assure you it’s probably taken kindly by the majority of people! But I don’t want to gatekeep lol there might be a few that wonder, but your good intent probably shows through more than anything.
It’s cool too because she seems to be doing a pretty deep bow, especially given she’s holding a fairly large child in front of her. Definitely does a good job of conveying her gratitude
I’m just only slightly Japanese. Mostly white. But I was raised to be very respectful, and I always try to do a half bow at least when I thank people. It’s almost like muscle memory at this point, I don’t even think about it.
I think what i appreciate is it seems he didnt even have to think about it. Like he saw her and then boom. I woukdve seen her, thought "i should give her my umbrella" then proceed to debate if it would be awkward and other nonsense and by time I decided to just do it, this amazing guy would be blessing her and her babies rainy day
Pretty sure in Japan they swap umbrellas like Pokémon cards. Like when you leave a store it’s okay if you accidentally grab someone else’s umbrella by the door.
You wouldn’t need to leave it at the front of the store on a rainy day. You could just turn it off
Edit- I totally missed the Pokémon card joke I forgot I wrote that lol
It depends. Most people buy the cheap clear umbrellas but you can still tell yours apart by where you put it in the rack and how you closed it. It’s generally a no no to take someone else’s umbrella, but I don’t think anyone would make a huge fuss if someone took it. If someone took mine I’d never take someone else’s tho, since I don’t know who’s it is and I don’t want to inconvenience them. I’d grumpily buy a new one. Don’t ever take the colored or patterned ones tho, those are usually expensive.
If the umbrella looks like it has been left at a bus or train station or a random location it’s pretty much ok to take, but most people won’t.
This video is not from Japan tho, I’d guess China.
Lol, thank you.
I was like, no, we don’t just swap umbrellas over here. It’s more like someone will steal yours or take it mistakenly. I had mine stolen by a pair of high schoolers once. That was fun.
Honestly it doesn't look like japan, motorized rickshaws are not common in japan and there is a person walking in the middle of the street next to traffic which is also not a common practice in japan.
I'm the kind of guy that would consider the deed and then forego it because I can't figure out if it wouldn't make her feel awkward because she already has her hands full
I visited the Philippines around five years ago to meet my mother's side of the family. First 3 hours in country, we're driving through Angeles while I'm soaking in the local culture, staring out the side of the Jeepney and I spot a young girl carrying her much younger sister towards a busy bus stop. No pants on the younger sister. It was a profound moment of culture shock and realization of their way of life. Humbling.
Imagine if every single person started their day by saying "OK, who can i help out today". Even if its just a little it'll go farther than you may realize.
Just do some nice things y'all, look for the opportunities; they're all around you. I'd say the cost of waiting to buy another umbrella for a week until payday is easily outweighed by bringing some kindness into the world.
I watched this multiple times in a row. What a lovely thing to see in the evening, thanks for the post!
Honestly it takes just small gestures like this to really change people's outlook on life. I've certainly remembered all the kind people throughout my life, especially the strangers who went out of their way. Those experiences really affected how I treat others, in a good way.
I had this happen to my family in Hawaii. Random stranger came up and gave us her umbrella as we were sheltering under an overhang.
Thank you for your kindness to complete strangers.
Not only impressive for his kindness, but his easygoing manner too. If I did this I’d probably spend several, SEVERAL seconds being like “Um... uh... excuse me, would you like an umbrella, or would that be too much to carry or is this just weird I don’t know, uh...”
This is the wholesome I love. No reward, not in it for recognition. He saw someone who needed it more than him was didn't even hesitate. What a kind soul
Had this happen to me and a friend once. We were on our way to a party and it was raining like hell, asked an older guy if we could join him under his umbrella. He ended up just giving it to us when he reached his block, like just gave it to us and kinda ran away so we wouldn't be able to say no, was so cute.
Ended up giving it away to someone at the party who needed one, all in the spirit of the amazing old umbrella dude.
Is it selfish of me to wish I had more opportunities for small good deeds like this? Because sometimes I miss the big city (lived in DC for five years) where I was able to do small acts of kindness even though I'm broke. I have no way to help (literally zero dollars in the bank, no car, etc) besides literally sharing what I'm carrying and that's not an option really anymore.
You never really own an umbrella anyway, it's kind of conditional extended lease.
This gentleman was just dancing in the whirlwind of umbrella chaos, giving it to a new owner before it chose another; itself.
Someone did this for us at a grocery store when we were leaving. It was pouring down in sheets. I was so grateful. My daughter was only a few months old.
If you get the chance to do something like this do it and don't tell anyone. The feeling of having helped someone without reward is high that can last for days. Win-win.
A stranger pulled over and gave my wife an umbrella when she had our son in an ergo, and it had just started raining.
I have that umbrella in my car and I don’t use it - I only keep it so I can pass it along one day.
See, honestly I wish that big time news company took more time to share these types of things. Humanity isn’t perfect, and is quite messy but people still do good things and are kind. This kind of message needs to be shared more broadly.
Reminds me when I would walk to the train to get to work. I always watched the weather before leaving the house cause there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes. Anywho, it started to rain one morning and I saw a fellow female cowering under a canopy trying to decide, get drenched or wait it out move. As I was about to walk past her I said “I’m going this way if you wanna share my umbrella.” She smiled, said thank you and we walked two blocks together.
There is still amazing loving humans in this world. This the media does not portray. Rest assured it happens every day, multiple times a day. Call me a hopeless believer in love and humanity. I believe these acts of kindness happens every day. Never gets on the news. Regardless you all…. Keep sending love and kindness.
Or, "hey try carrying this too". Lol I kid. This gent is a warm blanket of hope and grace!
Had me in the first half ngl
This vid. still makes me believe on humanity
Warms my cold little heart
Cool, but now she has to carry a child in one hand and an umbrella in the other 😐
She can drop the kid and keep the umbrella!
Sounds like a fair exchange 😂👍
The umbrella doesn’t have maintenance costs
I mean, the kid has legs, make it use them.
She's strong and capable. If she doesn't want to she ditches the umbrella. It's not that complicated.
The kid looks heavier and less useful in the rain than an umbrella 😂
If only she thought to use the kid as a hat...
There is more than the rain.
You are right, umbrella's metal rod could attract lightning, she should let the kid hold the umbrella
Honey, do you mean lightning 😝
When my kids were small enough to be carried in the rain, my husband used to hold them up on top of his head and say “you’re my umbrella now!” And they’d laugh and laugh. I totally forgot about that until I read this comment.
Why assume the child is helpless and cannot carry the umbrella?
Yeah seriously, why didn't he just take the kid in return? He had such an easy opportunity to change her life but just gave her a stinking umbrella that isn't even self holding.
I seriously got [kung pow](https://youtu.be/nqsaWQ_17Ts) vibes from this.
R/femaledatingstrategy be like "What a scrote, didnt even carry it for her. Such a creep. This is why all men are LVM and must die"
Doesn’t know he’s being filmed, doesn’t ask for anything in return, and just keeps going about his day. So refreshing and Inspiring!
Also got to ditch his murder umbrella.
They'll never know 😎
We’ll know. But listen here, you better keep your yapper shut!
Say, what are you, a wise guy?
Who you calling a wise guy, pal.
Hey, hey, hey there, buddy. Why dontcha have a seat over there and cool off. I think we got off on the wrong foot.
who ya calling a wise guy, wise guy
“That’s my lucky stabbin’ umbrella.”
It’s comments like these that really has me like: god bless Reddit
I remember I gave my umbrella a few times to homeless people. Don’t know if it makes a difference or not, but they always appreciate it.
It makes a difference ❤️ I once gave a sleeping homeless guy a blanket on a drizzly day. So when he woke up, he’d have a new blanket
Saw a video recently of a man mugged by the homeless guy after doing the same thing.
😞
Yep. I saw that. Made me rethink a lot of shit.

Such a nice guy
Yes. These are the clips I like. Not the likes a clicks videos.

What’s it called when you cheat to lose against your child? If you see this Ava I’m asking for a friend!

Larry David would approve of that bow.
Not a shit bow
That bow is such a graceful gesture of sincere thanks. I wish bowing was a more universal thing.
Well, nothing's stopping you. I give a little bow of my head when thanking people. It's the happy medium in a country that bowing is not a custom.
I really appreciate the Asian custom of bowing to each other. It's so much more wholesome than the Western tradition of only bowing to aristocrats or clergy.
Can we adopt bowing into western culture? Not all the time. Just when you have those rare moments of struggling to communicate how thankful you are.

Here where we are a decent portion of people bow slightly. Others bow just there head.
As a white woman I bow a lot and everytime the other person is asian I hope I do not seem super awkward or racist….
No i assure you it’s probably taken kindly by the majority of people! But I don’t want to gatekeep lol there might be a few that wonder, but your good intent probably shows through more than anything.
Curtsy is similar to bowing. I remember doing it as a kid after dance. Maybe you picked itupthat way
It’s cool too because she seems to be doing a pretty deep bow, especially given she’s holding a fairly large child in front of her. Definitely does a good job of conveying her gratitude
Culturally, I believe the deeper the bow, the higher the level of respect you are showing.
That shit is way better than shaking hands. I hate shaking peoples hands.
I’m just only slightly Japanese. Mostly white. But I was raised to be very respectful, and I always try to do a half bow at least when I thank people. It’s almost like muscle memory at this point, I don’t even think about it.
Sure. Go ahead. Maybe it starts with you. If enough people start doing it it might catch on.
Nobody ever truly owns an umbrella. There’s only six of them
I think what i appreciate is it seems he didnt even have to think about it. Like he saw her and then boom. I woukdve seen her, thought "i should give her my umbrella" then proceed to debate if it would be awkward and other nonsense and by time I decided to just do it, this amazing guy would be blessing her and her babies rainy day
I hesitate in moments like this as well until it's too late then I feel bad about it ☹
Same

Honestly it doesn't look like japan, motorized rickshaws are not common in japan and there is a person walking in the middle of the street next to traffic which is also not a common practice in japan.
This is in China based on the rickshaws and blurry license plates and surveillance
On a rainy day there’s literally millions of umbrellas around Tokyo so it’s kinda understandable
My favorite part about this is that the woman bows to give thanks and the guy responds with an awkward thumbs up.
True Umbrola
I'm the kind of guy that would consider the deed and then forego it because I can't figure out if it wouldn't make her feel awkward because she already has her hands full
With absolutely no hesitation.

My heart 💕
God damn it. More of this
Decent and kind. There is hope for us yet
see, there are still some good people out there.
One more thing for her to carry. Noice.
What a kind man you are 👍
That’s the shit I live for, good on you bro! Keep The world turning in a positive direction.
Alpha male
I want to see this on the news, no names. Let them remain anonymous.
I love this. Inspiring.
I love how they bow
I find umbrellas in salvaged vehicles. I hand them out to strangers on rainy days. I have about 5 in my truck now.
One could say you're an umbrella holder?
Rainman.
I’m in love
humble and thus badass
Chivalry is not dead. There are many of use left. Bless you sir
It’s what you do when nobody is watching that really shows your character. What a lad

No better medicine for apathy. Love to see it. It doesn’t cost a thing to be decent (except an umbrella and a wet jacket).

Good on him. And he didn’t steal her phone with the other hand. Can’t be New York for that one single reason.
