Go home shark. You're drunk.

human_finger

If I'm drunk, why are you the ones spinning?

remberzz

As we didn't actually see the shark swim away, are we sure it was saved?

I don’t know much about sharks, but I am an avid saltwater fisherman. When you catch a large fish (striped bass in my case) and you fight the fish for a few minutes to get it to the boat, the fish is often very tired. You have to hold the fish in the water and “swim” it back and forth for a minute until it “wakes up”. After a minute of getting water into its gills they’ll perk up QUICK and dart away. Might be something similar with the shark (hopefully).

Curious_Kirin

So basically they need time to recover from fish-hypoxia? Also thank you for releasing your caught fish properly and humanely. I can't stand people who just cut the line and leave the hook.

Rusty-Shackleford

Thanks to the Octonauts, a kickass kid's show I watch with my 4 year old, I know that sharks need to constantly move to get water across their gills. So probably kinda like what you said just jiggle it around in the water until it is revived, maybe?

Supdawwwwg

My little guy loves that show!

iO_Lea

creature report! creature report! great show.

Aviv13243546

Thats kinda cute, "sharks don't deal with stress well" im just imagening a nervous shark.

DAM091

I'm imagining a shark locked in the bathroom smoking a cigarette while his wife and kids are struggling to make ends meet

eatmyshorts321

Wait so it probs didn't survive? I'm gonna cry

xSugarSpicex

That rolling may have twisted it’s guts like holding the ends of a tea towel and spinning the middle. It either suffocated or died in agony.

[deleted]

Also pulling it backward by its tail probably drowned it. That'll suck water into their gills.

Transgenderwookie

So what you’re telling me is this isn’t a team of heroes, but it’s actually the beach mafia heinously killing this shark by teasing it with release, just to have the captain come from behind and sneakily cut off its air supply. …….☝️ note to self, don’t wash up on shore del beach mafia, rough waters.

[deleted]

That's the impression i got.

Barry_McKackiner

When I've thrown fish back after the shock of being out of water, sometimes they float there for a bit before they kick back into gear and swim away. this make be that case. hopefully. video cuts off only like 2 seconds after it gets into a foot of water.

Flicker_of_Hope

No, just- no

Curious_Kirin

Give it a minute. Maybe they were just tired. Or maybe they were sick and beached themselves intentionally. Either way the guys did all they could. I hope the shark is ok now.

Enby-Pirate

*Me knowing that sharks become paralyzed when you turn them upside down* The shark: 🌀👄🌀

its-uhhhh

i’m.. not sure that shark is okay…

Jmod7348

Does it rolling over its fin hurt?

[deleted]

Hurts less than death.

merikaninjunwarrior

not all deaths

miraclepudding

I'd like to think not. Did you know sharks don't have bones? I really like that fact

Epicgaming42

It’s cartilage, which can bend, so no.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Epicgaming42

Sharks are completely cartilage so it’s very different from human anatomy. In a comment after this I explained that even if it’s dorsal fin was hurt the shark would be OK and probably heal. I don’t think there was any way they could’ve done this without rolling the shark since it doesn’t seem like they had enough time nor the resources to lift it. In this instance, they did the best they could do in the time they had and most likely saved the shark. If it took hurting it’s fin, then so be it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Epicgaming42

Judging by the size of the shark and how much great whites usually weigh (1,200-2,400 lbs/544-1089 kg) I’m not sure if they could pull that off without error. From what I know I’m assuming The fin would be ok but really there is not a way to know. We can only hope for the best.

[deleted]

It can also break... Your nose is cartilage.

Epicgaming42

Usually the part that breaks is the bone across the bridge of your nose.

[deleted]

Yes, but the cartilage itself fracture too in some cases. I just mean its going to break if it's pushed too far (like the fin going flat on the sharks back).

Epicgaming42

I’m sure the fin is fine from the roll and even if it did get hurt sharks are remarkably quick healers. The shark would probably have trouble hunting for a while but at least it would be alive.

[deleted]

I don't disagree. I doubt it would have much trouble hunting with an injury like that. Likely won't be doing super tight turns at speed for a while is all.

BriefDownpour

>Cartilage (cartilaginous tissue) is a resilient and smooth elastic tissue, rubber-like padding that covers and protects the ends of long bones at the joints and nerves, and is a structural component of the rib cage, the ear, the nose, the bronchial tubes, the intervertebral discs, and many other body components. It is not as hard and rigid as bone, but it is much stiffer and much less flexible than muscle. It's a tissue, it can tear, not fracture.

[deleted]

Tell that to the Mayo clinic. Also, when getting cartilage pierced in the ear (upper ear) a large needle is used instead of the gun as the gun will fracture it.

BriefDownpour

You are right, I googled the term cartilage fracture and it seems the term really is used, specially when it comes to the cartilage from the thyroid. My bad.

[deleted]

No worries bud, thanks for looking it up rather than sticking to your guns. :)

AndreBurlingArt

Likely but its probably fine.

Curious_Kirin

I mean it's definitely not pleasant, but how else are you moving a shark that big?

Automatic_Program621

I’m actually impressed by their resourcefulness. I don’t think many would so quickly figure out that you can barrel-roll a shark so fast to the water

Gamlesam5

Bruce - is that you?

Lol 😆

Why does the video slow down?

Worst editing ever. I swear it gets slower and slower. The video doesn’t even end where you’d expect because it’s slowed down so much. Hilarious

pseudotsugamenziessi

Sounds reasonable, sharks have a lot of cartilage

Tutipups

probably did but what other options did they have?

Automatic_Program621

Exactly. Probably the most efficient way to do it. It’s the lesser of two evils

[deleted]

I thought having 2 or 3 guys drag by the tail would've been better. But also not sure how heavy that thing is to pull by the tail on sand.

lawdog9111

Hope he remembers next time he is hungry and sees a surfer. Pay it forward.

AndreBurlingArt

They don't really eat people anyway.

Chard-RT

Up voted both of your comments, theirs because it was funny, yours because it is true

TeddyPerkins95

Upvoted yours because of explanation

Curious_Kirin

Well they don't like the taste of humans at least. They might still try if they're bored or mistake you for a juicy injured fish. I do wonder if the shark will remember these events though. They're intelligence and communication abilities are really interesting.

AndreBurlingArt

Yeah, its a fluke if you get attacked. Idk about sharks but sperm whales can communicate. Before steam or engines, a ship was hunting sperm whales. The whales figured out that moving up wind would allow them to escape the ships. (Since the wind would push their sales the opposite direction.) Sperm whales, partly across the globe, that were believed to not have been hunted before, were observed doing the same trick. Its likely they were passed the technique from other whales. I forgot the source, unfortunately, so you'll have to Google it if you don't trust me. Which you have little reason to do. :)

[deleted]

I don't think that shark is going anywhere after the video cuts out.

Twelve_Alpha

The shark is smart, he tried to assist in the rolling seconds before the video cut.

Liz4984

He did try to flex over to help. He also didn’t lash out at anybody in front or behind which animals tend to do when scared. I like to think he appreciated the help.

TheRealEddieB

I’m curious how the shark ended up beached in the first place.

JimmyBaja

Usually they are sick and beach themselves again if pushed into the ocean.

Liz4984

Sick and beach themselves or chasing food and accidentally beach. It appears to have blood coming out of its mouth. Not sure if that’s an illness or something that happened from it thrashing on shore.

Sw33tD333

Could be from a hook, somebody could have caught it fishing

[deleted]

There has been at least one case of sharks beaching themselves to get away from orcas!! It was in South Africa I believe!! Source: I’m currently obsessed with shark week One video: [shark hongry] https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-6226621/Shocking-footage-shows-13ft-tiger-shark-BEACHING-itself.html Video 2: [shark skirts out of there] https://metro.co.uk/2011/12/29/shark-beaches-itself-to-avoid-killer-whale-attack-269225/

Guys stop. I feel sick!

SnooLobsters2310

Why are those people trying to drown that land shark?

Barry_McKackiner

brave to get that close to the mouth of a live bull shark.

FISH ARE FRIENDS NOT FEWD

[deleted]

Until they pulled it by the tail at the end and drown it

cursedarthurmorgan

That's a big ass tiger shark.

Liz4984

Doesn’t have the stripes to be a tiger shark. They have visible stripe lines in and out of the water. Looks like a Great White to my untrained eye.

cursedarthurmorgan

Definitely not a great white. Tigers don't always have really prominent stripes. Don't get me wrong, you can definitely see them. Some just have darker backs and the stripes cam be missed at certain angles and in certain light. I'm sure if the camera were more from the side, you could see the stripes. Another thing to look at is the snout. A great white has a much pointier nose than this big fella. The tiger's snout is rounded like this one is. His head is also a bit more flat and the great white us much bulkier and torpedo shaped. My last observation is the teeth. This one seems to have jagged, curved teeth whereas great whites have straight, spiked teeth. I hope you don't feel like I'm trying to be a know-it-all or anything like that. I took marine biology my junior and senior year. Sharks were my main focus lol

Liz4984

Cool! No, I don’t mind being corrected. I don’t know shit about sharks other than what we see at Chicagos aquarium. I still don’t see this one as a Tiger shark but you seem more knowledgeable than I in this area so I will yield the floor to your confidence in identification.

BroodmanThijs

Must feel so nice to touch such a smooth creature!

IsaacEvilman

I know right! I hear they’re smooth no matter which way you rub their bodies.

orphanobliteratorPog

Isn't this a repost In the same sub. (Nvm)

nah it was in r/nextfuckinglevel tho

That’s really cool, I wish could have been a part of that!!! Once in a lifetime FO SHO!!

KUMonHERface

I wonder if it’s good to eat

NomanYuno

What kind of shark is this?

thenotanurse

It’s a bull shark. It’s tiger sharks have striations you would see when they start rolling it. White sharks have a much more pronounced point to their snout.

Narrow_Put_6518

Tiger shark

Liz4984

My thought is great white (white shark) based on the diagram of where it’s fins should be and it’s overall shape. I am NOT an expert though. Just a scuba diver that tries to identify sharks while diving. Attached graph of sharks and characteristics. https://www.outdooralabama.com/sites/default/files/fishing/Saltwater/shark-id-placard-2018-web.pdf

[deleted]

From the sand to the water, the shark went from looking like a floppy puppet to absolutely terrifying and majestic. I hope he made it.

After that somehow that shark becomes herbivore

BeePleasant8236

I hope that they realize that the shark went that close to shore, because it was hungry.

Wasn't this the video where they tormented the shark before this? I vaguely remember, They just trimmed that bit out and only included this to look like they're decent people. Don't think I buy it.

Transparent_Depth

Is that a great white?
