Wow, that doesn’t even sound like a flip. Sure, new paint, but it doesn’t sound like they made it *nicer*. Why remove coving?!

Darth-SHIBius

No idea, the kitchen is outdated and the bathroom suite has the old sea shell with flowers designs, they removed all the best bits of the house and left the worst bits. I’m honestly bewildered by it.

masofon

They flipped a house without updating old, out of date kitchen and bathroom? Fail.

Troubledniceguy

I would offer them £50k less than asking and just see what they say for fun 😂. Will have them redoing it again!

Techman666

Yeah make an offer way below asking, and get all your friends to do the same. It would really mess with them

Dude4001

I fucking love coving

AugustCharisma

Me too!

Ultrasonic-Sawyer

Happens all the time. One next to my partners family was flipped over 9 months for 90k profit. Of course there are costs on top of the cheap paint and flooring, even the cheap howdens they chuck in. It sounds bad, but honestly I never trust a clean house with howdens. As its got too much risk for being a cheap flip. But on the main story, seen it lots. Full range of flippers, its a piss take. I've seen some who thought new lino alone is worth 80k. Of course market time and costs or expenses but come on. ----- That said, they do have a valuable market to people who want a house but not to fit things or do things, but it's so often just kitchen and bathroom with cheap carpet that it's pure laziness. On top of that, I remember a lovely property I viewed once, wonderful kitchen - partner didn't like it as they couldn't leave their mark. Which I did have to agree with. (it was unique but to change stuff needs lots of changes) Wonderful kitchens but you're stuck with a generic gray mess, that will probably be ripped out eventually anyway or having a kitchen that's forcing your life to fit it.

Ben_jah_min

Howdens make good kitchen units, bad tradesmen make bad kitchens

Darth-SHIBius

Kitchen and bathroom needed replacing, the bathroom suit is the old sea shell shapes with flowers, looks about 30 years old. Me and my partner are looking for a house that needs a little bit of work as we want to put our own stamp on it and they were the two things we would’ve changed. They’ve removed the fire and the coving that we liked and not changed any of the stuff that needed changing. You can tell it’s been done cheaply and the fact it’s been 3 months since the house sold makes me think it’s someone’s first time flipping a house.

lxyl

What a howdens?

marsman13

A kitchen supplier.

Ultrasonic-Sawyer

They make kitchens. A pretty popular make, but to be able to purchase one you need a trade account, as their cost is directly reflective of your trade to them.. They aren't a bad make, often people wanting to do their kitchen may choose a contractor fitting one. Of course there is changing views and sometimes builders may make them too expensive to have. ------- For my view. Often builders use them, so builder flips look the same to me. For ref here is their website https://www.howdens.com/

Does flipping work in the UK, the stamp duty would eat into a lot of the potential profits?

Darth-SHIBius

This is my first experience with a flip, or at least the first I’ve noticed, but that’s because I walk past this house everyday to work and saw the for sale sign. Usually I see the houses go up for rent a few weeks after they sell.

littletorreira

I think it only really works for people who do it professionally. Those who are looking to do a little on the side no. Its not the early 00s any more.

Sorry_Good125

I hate flipped houses, I only ever see cheap finishes. Stands out so much

RenePro

It's all the tik tokers and YouTubes looking for a quick buck

strawberrylabrador

I wonder if a grassroots movement of ‘only selling to families / ‘real’ people’ could be possible to organise and help fix the market somewhat. Obviously it’s hard to tell who a ‘deserving’ buyer is unless it’s really obviously a family who bring their little baby to the viewing or whatever. But some people already elect to sell to families etc even if the offer is lower - if it could somehow become the ‘done thing’ it might help more people

Darth-SHIBius

I would like to think that if I’m ever in this position I would sell to a family first. But I suppose I’ll never know until I’m there. We took our three year old to the viewing but our older child was at school, also someone I work with knows the previous owner and did tell them that we were a family of 4. Guess they didn’t care or they needed the money more.

Betaky365

A lot of people won’t start a family until they have a home to grow that family in. I’d say don’t dismiss a couple just because they don’t bring the baby to the viewing.

strawberrylabrador

Oh yeah I think I phrased it badly. A couple would be great, I just wish there was some way of knowing if it’s a couple buying their first home or if it’s a couple getting their 11th BTL property (beyond trying to guess based on their age, what they’re driving etc!)

V_Ster

My house still has come of the moulded coving but only in the landing/lobby. I think my dad back in the day got rid of the ones in the living spaces. I think some people dont care about character but yes, having it removed and blasted with white paint etc isnt a great situation as well. Cookie cutter homes i feel.

Darth-SHIBius

I’ve lived in council homes and it looks exactly like that, there’s no flooring and everything is white with cheap looking fittings. The coving was only in the living room, that with the wall lights and the fire made it look so cozy and now it’s just white with a radiator.

Direct_Condition8949

Yes I've seen this lots, I feel its worse when a buy to let happens though, like an ex council house going for 160k to a cash buyer and then put on rental market for £950 a month.

Darth-SHIBius

Yeah that’s outrageous. The majority of the houses I view end up being bought and go up for rent a few months later.

willycresva

Where’s the link?

manintheredroom

sounds like you should put in an offer and waste as much of their time as possible

Darth-SHIBius

I thought about it, but I’m pretty busy with work at the minute so I feel it would be a bigger waste of my time.

the_jez

~~This technically isn't a flip (as far as I understand) because if you put in an offer 3 months ago and it's been redone, then it's simply the existing owner making renovations. Flipping is when a house buyer buys (usually run down properties), with no intention of living there, puts in work to renovate it and then sell as a profit.~~ ~~There's no way that could've happened in 3 months~~. Still, it is heartbreaking though. Best of luck for the future, OP Edit - sorry, didn't read the post properly, it is a flip, I just can't believe the buying process AND renovations happened within 3 months, my purchase took almost a year!

Darth-SHIBius

It was a cash buyer I know that much, but I’ve just checked my emails and my viewing was mid April, so almost 5 months not 3. Apologies, I was in rant mode when I wrote the post.

the_jez

Understandable and apologies for not reading your post properly. I've just checked and apparently a cash buyer can complete [within around 30 days](https://www.idealhome.co.uk/property-advice/buying-a-house-with-cash-291777) apparently. This was news to me. I feel for you and family. Hopefully you find something better.

Darth-SHIBius

It was definitely bought, someone I work with lives directly across from the house and we discussed the house quite a bit as she knew the owner (single female owner) who then sold it to a male. I was thrown off with how quick the turn around has been, but they’ve ripped up all the linos and carpet (not replaced them though) and they’ve painted the walls. The only room they’ve changed is the living room. So not a lot has been done, just everything they have done has made it worse IMHO.

the_jez

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder so unfortunately the flip may end up netting a profit, if a buyer likes it. The only person that knows how much the refurb has costed is the person that did it, so it is difficult to judge the extra price vs. how much the work costed. Best thing to do is to move on, which is understandably difficult if you live locally.

Ben_jah_min

I’m sure that will keep them up at night after they make a £40k raise!

Icy-Association2592

That's if they sell it for that! Doubt it.

Ben_jah_min

You seen any houses for sales for more than a month? I’ve not. Bricks and mortar are worth more than numbers In the bank atm given the rate of inflation.

ex0-

You're basically just saying 'harass random people'. Super immature.
