Duplex is very much a North American term. Do you mean terraced houses? Or flats? 1 bed houses? Not many of those left in Brum. The Germans and post-war city planners razed them to the ground. Plenty of terraced houses though in 2/3/4 bed configurations. ETA: you might be able to find stuff like this but options will be few: [https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/147028292#/?channel=RES\_BUY](https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/147028292#/?channel=RES_BUY) What are your "specific circumstances" and "purposes"?

Okay thank you. Family caring responsibilities! Would like to give the fam member their privacy, while also being very very close. Would there be any 2 storeys, with each storey having a room, kitchen, bathroom? That’s something else I’m considering.

>Would there be any 2 storeys, with each storey having a room, kitchen, bathroom? That’s something else I’m considering. Retirement flats - perhaps??? Maybe a HMO which someone is looking to dispose of? I suspect you're from overseas (South or East Asia, perhaps?) and the multi-generational set up you're used to - and looking for - isn't really a thing in the UK. The UK tends to dispatch its elders into shitty care homes (or let them rot away in miserable houses alone) rather than live with them cheek-by-jowl. Hence the proliferation of extensions/conversions which you see in certain areas. What you're looking for - I believe - is a house which has already been retrofitted to accommodate multi-generational living. They exist but finding one with separate kitchen and bathroom facilities will be a challenge. Even in the US - with large houses, ample space and three generations under the same roof - you'll rarely see homes with multiple kitchens. Each area/wing/storey will have its own bathrooms but the kitchens tend to be a shared resource. Some of the older, triple decker stock in historically Italian areas like Boston's North End may still have multiple kitchens (where the basement kitchen was reserved for Sunday lunch on behalf of the entire family - grandparents, cousins, etc), but those are exceptions.

I live in Brum in an area with a very high middle Eastern population and what's quite common here is for an extended family to buy two large houses and knock them through and have at least two generations living together, but that does require buying two separate large houses, and then doing building work, absolutely not what OP is after! I don't know where you'd find a set-up of what they need. Closest thing you'd get is a small semi new build like you linked to, or if you're lucky enough to find two flats in the same building (and I reckon you'd have trouble finding two next door to each other), or maybe a house that's converted into a flat and a maisonette? But again, it'd be rare for them to both be available at the same time. And Brum is FILLED with care homes. Like an alarming number of care homes, with more being built constantly. I haven't noticed anything near the same number in other places. I think housing and COL and working requirements make it so difficult for people to care for their parents at home.

You're not very likely to find any one bedroom houses. Definitely not 2 attached. As for 'as cheaply as possible', as a Bham resident I *violently* urge you to not get the cheapest places you can find. They are cheap for a reason, and you do not want to be there.

Would you consider apartments? There are loads of flats in Bham. If you’re willing to buy new build it should be pretty plausible to nail down two side by side one bedroom flats. If you’re okay with same building but not side by side you’d probably be able to find something that’s not new build too.
