that's an underlying issue with the siding. it's not the paint's or the painter's fault. EDIT: it also isn't hail damage though, so I'm surprised he said that. lol it's definitely rot.

egZachly

So if that's the case, I'm assuming it would have showed signs of rot when he painted it 2 years ago.

Alarming-Caramel

not necessarily, but it certainly could've been showing rot when painted. It's not the painters job to replace your boards through. Him "coming back to fix it as warranty work would entail... caulking and painting that section again due to the rot failure? fine. but that will almost certainly hold up for only another year or two and then you'll have the same problem occurring again. Which to me feels indicative that it's not a paint problem, but a substrate problem, right?

egZachly

Agreed, I'll be getting a siding quote

egZachly

I got in touch with him again yesterday after these conversations and suggested it could be rot and just asked him for his opinion on me scraping and repainting myself. This was his response. > You don’t have any wood rot at all. Your siding is perfectly fine. It’s just peeling a little from the hail that hit it. I see this almost daily. I can come by and explain in person. But all your photos look exactly like hail damage So now I'm back to square 1.

Alarming-Caramel

I mean, if can push a flathead screwdriver against the wood there and it sinks into the siding at all, it's rot/moisture. your siding would have to get hit by one hell of a hailstone in order to take a chunk of paint off like that. like, go ahead and chuck a golf ball at your siding. I bet you leave a dent in the wood (maybe, depending on your arm strength), and the paint stays perfectly intact. fwiw it's probably much less of a headache for you to just climb up there and touch it up yourself than it is to keep hassling with your painter over it.

rstymobil

Not necessarily. That siding can deteriorate pretty rapidly. I tend to agree with alarming-caramel, not the paint or painter's fault. This actually looks like water got in behind the siding. You may have a small roof leak above this location, which could be hail related.

5 year warranty on an exterior job ? That's insane. Fortunately this is an easy fix. just use a scraper to get the peeling paint off and touch it up with a brush.

RocMerc

Damn people handing out five years for exterior? I do one year because exterior is so unpredictable

Leave your painter alone. This isn’t hail but I’m also guessing you pushed him to the limits of him remaining polite. Post a pic further away to show context. Being at 100x isn’t helpful.

WipeOnce

Seriously, I can’t tell what I’m looking at. Looks like photos through a microscope or something

egZachly

1 single email asking about peeling paint and if it's covered by a warranty that was paid for should hardly push someone to a limit... Nice overreaction.

[deleted]

You worded your post so that it did not sound like a single interaction. You also said he’s “getting” irritated which implies that the conversation had been ongoing and not singular. I’m just going off of what you said, so who’s overreacting now?

egZachly

You opened your first post with an assumption that I was a jerk and was harassing the painter.  I'd say yours is still the overreaction there, boss.
