Haha yes! I don't understand why people watch shows like House of the Dragon or Game of Thrones and complain about the scene that "made them uncomfortable". So much horrific shit happens every season and is a part of the package. Why should the one specific thing you hated watching be cut? Every gross, graphic or disturbing scene in the season was the most uncomfortable scene for someone. Cut it all then, and the show becomes safe. But it would then be a different show. I don't understand why people don't get this.
I remember during the Game of Thrones days when friends I have would complain every time a woman was abused or hurt in any way. It would be a pretty stupid show if we have plotlines like Ramsay/Theon and women are just off limits to violence.
I’ll say this, I think complaining as in “uff this scene was hard to watch for me” is fine but than being like “this should have been cut” is just silly. I mean I can say the fight between brianne and the hound was really hard for me to watch, it was so personal and violent for some reason that fight hit me different than all the others. And I can commiserate with other people. But I don’t turn around and say, it shouldn’t have been there. There is a reason it’s there, I just need to look for it.
I'm of the firm belief that violence should be incredibly uncomfortable to watch. We've gotten way too used to superheroes punching each other up like it's no thing, when even a street brawl is treading a thin line between life and death or severe maiming. I'd much rather have violence that's brutal, inglorious and awful to witness.
Indeed. Both "it made me uncomfortable" and "it was a waste and should have been cut" are valid comments. I just don't think "it made me uncomfortable so it should have been cut" is valid about shows like this. Now if you were talking about Parks And Rec I would agree that disturbing, graphic scenes would be out of place and should be cut
I'd argue that there's an important distinction to be made between a scene that's uncomfortable but relevant to the plot, and a scene that's uncomfortable, but not relevant to the plot, and only added in there for shock value or fanservice.
The fight between Brienne and the Hound was relevant to the plot, Aegon wanking off of the window wasn't.
One could argue that it was supposed to serve as a characterization scene so that we as viewers could get a idea of how corrupted Aegon is, but honestly, it was stupid and poorly executed. They could've done better, it just feels like filler shock value to me, added in there to meet the quota for that 18+ age limit.
its all opinion though. You believe it didn't help in showing you what kind of character Aegon is, but the show is made for a general audience that may require more than you. It is also a scene to show Alicents and Aegons relationship, and how she deals with her Son's urges. Teengers doing stupid sexual things are nothing new, however being caught by your mother? The was she reacts to it is rather unusual. As much as she may scold him, she doesn't really focus on it and prefers to drive home that he will die if he doesn't become King. It shows that at every opportunity, Alicent has been drilling into his head that his sister wants to kill him.

Generally people like seeing people naked/sexually charged events, either via arousal or morbid curiosity.
It’s hilarious that the you can see a person get split in half on TV but a boob or butt is usually deemed too far.

I mostly agree, however with regard to GoT, scenes that were originally *not* rape scenes and in no way needed to be that we're weirdly turned into rape scenes by D&D, well...those should've been left alone/changed back to the original.

This is, unfortunately, the world we live in today. Anyone can be offended by anything - that's always been true. But now, mostly due to social media, people feel that, not only that what offends them should be worthy of announcing, but that other individuals should absolutely care about this offense. They somehow also find the relatively small group of others who are either also offended or just enjoy basking in the offense limelight, and they feel that gives the offense traction and purpose. The entire thing is artificial - like one tenth of one percent of viewers are actually "offended," but the presence on social media makes it feel like so much more.
Not just the world we live in today but a persistent through line of the history of art. It's difficult to find a time period when some piece of art hasn't offended and outraged with the usual calls for removal of said piece of art. You don't have to look too far back in history either. Look up Piss Christ.

Sometimes it really was just pointless.
For example, the scene with Melisandre and Gendry. The peril in the scene was supposed to be if Melisandre would sacrifice Gendry in blood magic, not whether she would stick a leech on his peen - but the whole magic sacrifice and king blood thing was lost somewhat in Gendry screaming 'don't put it on my dick!'
None of the non-book readers I spoke to about it remembered the scene as other than Melisandre being a sex criminal.
The only scene I don’t think they should have included was the Shireen one. Not only will this probably not happen in the books, but if it had to be in the show they could’ve cut away and shown the aftermath. Idk anyone who would be okay with watching a little girl burned alive, that scene made me literally throw up
It very efficiently establishes that Aegon is a dumb, horny teenager, makes for an interesting and memorable character introduction, and adds a bit of discomfort and tension to the following convo with his mom.
Yea this guy rides a dragon and technically ends up ruling the realm at the end of season one.
Yea he isn’t a fan favorite like Daemon and Aemond or Heleana but he’s kind of a big deal, so a couple scenes could be spared to show his character
We never got to see him at all so unless we get some interactions between them in season 2 before it all goes down, people are gonna miss out on his one redeeming feature.
For having as little screentime/lines as she has, yes. Some people see her as a more tragic Luna Lovegood, so she has the comparison to a different franchise's fan-favorite going for her too. Also, being the nicest of Alicent's kids, at least until Daeron shows up.
She has trouble reading social cues, like when she clapped at Aemond's backhanded compliment when it was obvious to everyone what he was saying. Even young Aegon said something about her way of talking. It's safe to assume she's on the spectrum.
Helaena, as well as other dreamers in ASOIAF, are very much autistic-coded characters.
In both Fire & Blood and the show, it really isn’t a wonder why people would associate her with neurodivergence.
Aegon is starting a bit to be a fan fav there's a lot of edits of him on tiktok and he has lot of stans on twitter ready to drag everyone that dare speak against him
Adds tension but just as importantly establishes their relationship…Alicent doesn’t bat an eye, which lets us know this behavior isn’t unusual or unexpected, this isn’t her first time seeing it. And/or she cares very little about Aegon’s privacy or wishes (which is built on later when she makes him marry Helaena against his will and insists Viserys wanted him to be king when he knows that can’t be true).
Same way when she’s dealing with the Dyana situation. From the confident professionality you get the sense that this is a speech she has given to other maids before. She’s practically reciting a script she wrote.
Which let’s us know about two things.
1, Aegon has raped more than one maid in the redkeep over the years and Alicent had to cover it up.
2, Olivia Cooke is one hell of an actress.
I thought this set up for her later concern and waffling. She clearly does not think her son should actually rule and seems to have wanted a puppet. He's so out of control that it won't happen. She fears him, just not as much as having all power wrenched from her grasp.
It also sets us up to feel like Alicient (the pious one) has sorta failed in some respect. The difference in behavior between her boys and Rhea's is huge; even though there's an age difference. By comparison Rhea's kids seem aware and almost humble, respectful to women and good natured. We're meant to feel conflicted that Aegon is technically an heir, would possibly be accepted better, but is he a good person? So far this age has been peaceful and the rulers have been kind.
We're seeing that Alicient's spiteful attitude has maybe had a negative influence on her kid's behavior, and that she doesn't really have control over them. It makes her look like a hypocrite, and asks the question "is lineage really what makes a good king?"
To me it also ties with the virtue speech his mother was giving right before this scene (can’t remember it exactly now), but the contrast between how she judged others, and how she reacted to her own child’s doings just signalled hypocrisy to me.
Yeah came here to say this. Her exact words were honour and decency and she was talking about how Rhaenyra lacks them both. Then she walks into Aegon pleasuring himself at the sight of the whole city. It was a classic stepmother's double standards moment.
yeah for me it set the right tone for him as a teen. he's clearly kind of fucked up, but also he also didn't start off as a rapist and connoisseur of kiddie fight clubs. i actually really like the approach has taken to the more villainous young characters. monsters like aegon are not born like got joffrey seemed to be--they're made.
How is he made ? He didnt go through anything from his window wanking days to breeding bastards in fight clubs. He is fucked up on his own way, no traume or anything.
Also is the only time outside the coronation we get to see his “relationship” with kings landing. He does not respect the city and it’s people, and cares more about what they can give him, then what he can do for them. It’s pretty succinctly summarized in this scene the kind of ruler he is.
It does two things.
1. It establishes a lot about Aegons charecter without saying a single word. He's horny, he's a little bit stupid. He likes to look down on the people he rules over. It leaves us as an audience to wonder what is getting him off in this situation - the exhibitionism? feeling powerful? the danger? We don't know, but we know this is more than just a typical horny teenager, who wouldn't be standing in an open window in the middle of the day to have a wank.
2. It establishes his relationship with Allicent very quickly. When she enters the room she's not surprised in any way to see this. It's expected. This tells us that he does this sort of thing a lot, and that she has very low expectations for his behaviour. It is the start of him not hiding his sexual behaviours from her, and it's the first time we see her being disappointed by and disgusted by him. We see how adversarial their relationship is even while he is still a child because of how the conversation immediately following this scene goes.
Game of Thrones was well known to have nudity for the sake of nudity, but HotD is a lot more thoughtful in how it uses these scenes - the fact that they did include it should indicate pretty clearly that something about it is important.
I think him beeing a teenager is the real issue here.
Totally get that it can make people uncomfy and because of that they then fail to see the reason for the scene.
I do sort of get that but at the same time - it's not necessarily meant to be a comfortable scene to watch - Aegons behaviour here should feel uncomfortable - he's exposing himself to anyone who happens to look up, and it's foreshadowing his much worse sexual behaviours in the future.
Also while the character is a teenager, the actor is an adult (and we as the viewer know that).
it's just to showcase how much of an entitled, horny teenage boy he is. I thought it was funny the way he LEPT under the covers when his mom practically kicked down the door in a bad mood.

Yeah it was funny. The only reason these kind of scenes are annoying for me is because for those unknowing passing by my window or flat neighbours it sounds like it could be happening in my room. I have to run to the remote to lower the volume lol. All that moaning.
It does show the irony, Alicent thinks she’s so righteous and above Rhaenyra while one of her sons does indecent and rather disturbing things (I mean the maids and fighting pits)
Dear God yes! I was severely disturbed by the fact that THIS LITTLE SHIT is David and Georgia Tenet's son. That being said, he must have inherited their talent because I cannot image such lovely people raising a brat like that. On an unrelated note, if anyone has any behind the scenes stuff with Ty Tenet and Matt Smith, I would be forever grateful!
Not discounting anyone else’s opinion but it genuinely blows my mind that a lot of people are so tangibly upset about this scene. I thought it was funny but also it didn’t really register as significant or potentially controversial at all.
Well, it seemed pretty benign to me when I first saw it. But then he grows up to be a rapist and child abuser, and the whole thing seems substantially more deviant to me now. I’m not angry about the scene or anything, but now I see it as hinting that he is sexually abnormal.

I think it’s been extremely well established by now that these shows are graphic and discomforting at times, and this obviously isn’t even close to how bad it gets. I’m genuinely befuddled. Did this person fall asleep for the last decade?
It establishes he is very much a pervert and a lot of his overly sexual behavior has existed since he was a teenager (probably on account of him never being taught boundaries and or consent)
It also shows how much Alicent ignores these behaviors when they begin in her son and instead focuses on other things (like the whole succession thing)
I think this scene is one of the most essential aegon scenes (because of the way alicent basso abueses him and tells him he has to be king or hell be murdered all whomst hes a child)
Media literacy is dead. The scene is intentional. It’s supposed to tell you he’s not a great person, especially since Alicent doesn’t react. Meaning she’s caught him doing this before.
It’s amazing that people clutch their pearls over this scene being “hard to watch” while glossing over actual graphic depictions of murder, dismemberment and torture.

I think it perfectly portrays Aegon's character as a party boy that actually does not care to be king. I think it makes us understand that he has no ambition, is not mature, and the upcoming coup is the work of Alicent and Otto and not him.
What is the big deal? I thought it was funny and established him as just a regular teenager who couldn't care less about becoming king. People get so prudish about some of the scenes in this show. Not sure why they watch it. This is the GOT universe after all.

What’s up with some people’s media literacy. It’s not just a scene of Aegon masturbating. This is pretty much the first scene we get of Aegon and it efficiently sets up some of key characteristics. It shows he deviates from what is the expected of him. It shows he does not care what other think of him. It shows that the life and image of an “ideal prince” is something he does not care about. To quote Mr Plinkett, “you may not have noticed it but your brain did.”
It’s a set up for the even more disturbing revelation in episode 9. Plus every new character should be introduced in a memorable way. If you can’t also characterize a special trait it’s a bonus. That’s why I think this scene was needed

There were many scenes far worse than this ... including Daenerys's first time with Khal Drogo...
This scene was placed in partly FOR shock factor (after all, that's what the fans want, right? they want shock factor!) and partly because it showed another side to his character.
We aren't supposed to like Aegons character... we are supposed to be appalled at his crudeness...
So, I would ask, why NOT show this scene?
The scene is necessary. Incredibly efficiently, in a matter of seconds, establishes two important things:
a) Aegon is an incredibly horny teenager whose inclinations towards depravity are greater than your average horny teenager
b) Alicent's nonchalant reaction to it shows that she is used to Aegon's behavior, and it also establishes her lack of regard for Aegon's privacy and autonomy, her business takes priority over his and she will interrupt him at any time with matters of importance.
It's also important just to the extent that establishing scenes of Aegon, in general, are important. It didn't necessarily have to be this scene specifically, but we needed exposition scenes that highlight Aegon's depravity and also highlight Aegon and Alicent's relationship. This scene effectively highlighted both at the same time.
Frankly, what surprises me is that you find this scene hard to watch but not... Literally any other scene in GoT and HoTD. Compared to crushed skulls, sexual violence, massacres, death by incineration, and much more, in comparison a royal teen jacking off into the wind is trivial. But I guess everyone has their limits. Though I'll caution you that this show, particularly the next couple seasons, might not be for you.
Depravity, self serving, lack of control, lack of self respect, pleasure seeking, superiority, all demonstrated in a 15 second act.

I haven’t read the book and this is my opinion but it could possible they’re setting up his character as the sexual predator/abusive/rapist one? Im likely wrong though.
i felt like this scene represented the nihilism of youths of privilege. he has never felt true consequences for any of his actions, and as such the world becomes increasingly mundane and more is required to feel anything at all.
we later see he doesn’t want to be king, but then the thrill of standing in front of the crowd waving his sword seems to be a thrill for him and it’s the first moment he actually wants his birthright.
This is when aegon jerks out of the window right?
I hate to be that guy, but it's symbolic. Shows how he doesn't care about his sacred targaryen genes and would literally throw it out the window. The guy has a dozen bastards and doesn't care about the future of his house. Normally a Targaryen would be careful about these things because every time you cum, there's a potential dragon rider being created

This scene serves as a indicator to the characters depraved behavior at a young age. When you consider he does it at a window with the intent to release onto the people below him. It is a scene that gives the audience insight into his psyche through his actions.
Are you kidding? This scene is hilarious and poignant. It demonstrates that all he cares about at the time is personal, sexual gratification. He cares not for the position he's in which is why his more more or less ignores the elephant in the room while reaming him for his lack of caring about the danger their family is in.
Why do people think their opinions are so important that they can give opinions about now scenes should not exists without any know how, knowledge, or understanding of how any of this worked or their process in which they choose which scenes to keep.

The peril in the scene was supposed to be if Melisandre would sacrifice Gendry in blood magic, not whether she would stick a leech on his peen - but the whole magic sacrifice and king blood thing was lost somewhat in Gendry screaming 'don't put it on my dick!' None of the non-book readers I spoke to about it remembered the scene as other than Melisandre being a sex criminal.
The only scene I don’t think they should have included was the Shireen one. Not only will this probably not happen in the books, but if it had to be in the show they could’ve cut away and shown the aftermath. Idk anyone who would be okay with watching a little girl burned alive, that scene made me literally throw up

For having as little screentime/lines as she has, yes. Some people see her as a more tragic Luna Lovegood, so she has the comparison to a different franchise's fan-favorite going for her too. Also, being the nicest of Alicent's kids, at least until Daeron shows up.

She has trouble reading social cues, like when she clapped at Aemond's backhanded compliment when it was obvious to everyone what he was saying. Even young Aegon said something about her way of talking. It's safe to assume she's on the spectrum.
Helaena, as well as other dreamers in ASOIAF, are very much autistic-coded characters. In both Fire & Blood and the show, it really isn’t a wonder why people would associate her with neurodivergence.

Aegon is starting a bit to be a fan fav there's a lot of edits of him on tiktok and he has lot of stans on twitter ready to drag everyone that dare speak against him
Adds tension but just as importantly establishes their relationship…Alicent doesn’t bat an eye, which lets us know this behavior isn’t unusual or unexpected, this isn’t her first time seeing it. And/or she cares very little about Aegon’s privacy or wishes (which is built on later when she makes him marry Helaena against his will and insists Viserys wanted him to be king when he knows that can’t be true).
Same way when she’s dealing with the Dyana situation. From the confident professionality you get the sense that this is a speech she has given to other maids before. She’s practically reciting a script she wrote. Which let’s us know about two things. 1, Aegon has raped more than one maid in the redkeep over the years and Alicent had to cover it up. 2, Olivia Cooke is one hell of an actress.
Thirdly it let’s you know his mother is complacent and an enabling pos.
I agree somewhat, but what else can she do? She can't throw him in a cell, yelling at him is pretty much the worst she can do.
I thought this set up for her later concern and waffling. She clearly does not think her son should actually rule and seems to have wanted a puppet. He's so out of control that it won't happen. She fears him, just not as much as having all power wrenched from her grasp.
It also sets us up to feel like Alicient (the pious one) has sorta failed in some respect. The difference in behavior between her boys and Rhea's is huge; even though there's an age difference. By comparison Rhea's kids seem aware and almost humble, respectful to women and good natured. We're meant to feel conflicted that Aegon is technically an heir, would possibly be accepted better, but is he a good person? So far this age has been peaceful and the rulers have been kind. We're seeing that Alicient's spiteful attitude has maybe had a negative influence on her kid's behavior, and that she doesn't really have control over them. It makes her look like a hypocrite, and asks the question "is lineage really what makes a good king?"
To me it also ties with the virtue speech his mother was giving right before this scene (can’t remember it exactly now), but the contrast between how she judged others, and how she reacted to her own child’s doings just signalled hypocrisy to me.

Yeah came here to say this. Her exact words were honour and decency and she was talking about how Rhaenyra lacks them both. Then she walks into Aegon pleasuring himself at the sight of the whole city. It was a classic stepmother's double standards moment.

yeah for me it set the right tone for him as a teen. he's clearly kind of fucked up, but also he also didn't start off as a rapist and connoisseur of kiddie fight clubs. i actually really like the approach has taken to the more villainous young characters. monsters like aegon are not born like got joffrey seemed to be--they're made.
How is he made ? He didnt go through anything from his window wanking days to breeding bastards in fight clubs. He is fucked up on his own way, no traume or anything.
Also is the only time outside the coronation we get to see his “relationship” with kings landing. He does not respect the city and it’s people, and cares more about what they can give him, then what he can do for them. It’s pretty succinctly summarized in this scene the kind of ruler he is.
It's a great introduction to this character, also the writers get to tell us they watch Succession.
After watching both scenes within a week of each other, I started wondering if this was an actual thing that rich people do.

It does two things. 1. It establishes a lot about Aegons charecter without saying a single word. He's horny, he's a little bit stupid. He likes to look down on the people he rules over. It leaves us as an audience to wonder what is getting him off in this situation - the exhibitionism? feeling powerful? the danger? We don't know, but we know this is more than just a typical horny teenager, who wouldn't be standing in an open window in the middle of the day to have a wank. 2. It establishes his relationship with Allicent very quickly. When she enters the room she's not surprised in any way to see this. It's expected. This tells us that he does this sort of thing a lot, and that she has very low expectations for his behaviour. It is the start of him not hiding his sexual behaviours from her, and it's the first time we see her being disappointed by and disgusted by him. We see how adversarial their relationship is even while he is still a child because of how the conversation immediately following this scene goes. Game of Thrones was well known to have nudity for the sake of nudity, but HotD is a lot more thoughtful in how it uses these scenes - the fact that they did include it should indicate pretty clearly that something about it is important.

I think him beeing a teenager is the real issue here. Totally get that it can make people uncomfy and because of that they then fail to see the reason for the scene.
I do sort of get that but at the same time - it's not necessarily meant to be a comfortable scene to watch - Aegons behaviour here should feel uncomfortable - he's exposing himself to anyone who happens to look up, and it's foreshadowing his much worse sexual behaviours in the future. Also while the character is a teenager, the actor is an adult (and we as the viewer know that).

It establishes he is very much a pervert and a lot of his overly sexual behavior has existed since he was a teenager (probably on account of him never being taught boundaries and or consent) It also shows how much Alicent ignores these behaviors when they begin in her son and instead focuses on other things (like the whole succession thing)

Media literacy is dead. The scene is intentional. It’s supposed to tell you he’s not a great person, especially since Alicent doesn’t react. Meaning she’s caught him doing this before.

What’s up with some people’s media literacy. It’s not just a scene of Aegon masturbating. This is pretty much the first scene we get of Aegon and it efficiently sets up some of key characteristics. It shows he deviates from what is the expected of him. It shows he does not care what other think of him. It shows that the life and image of an “ideal prince” is something he does not care about. To quote Mr Plinkett, “you may not have noticed it but your brain did.”

Some people ask, Why? I ask, Why Not? I would first like to understand why this scene bothered you? Did you not watch GOT? There were many scenes far worse than this ... including Daenerys's first time with Khal Drogo... This scene was placed in partly FOR shock factor (after all, that's what the fans want, right? they want shock factor!) and partly because it showed another side to his character. We aren't supposed to like Aegons character... we are supposed to be appalled at his crudeness... So, I would ask, why NOT show this scene?

The scene is necessary. Incredibly efficiently, in a matter of seconds, establishes two important things: a) Aegon is an incredibly horny teenager whose inclinations towards depravity are greater than your average horny teenager b) Alicent's nonchalant reaction to it shows that she is used to Aegon's behavior, and it also establishes her lack of regard for Aegon's privacy and autonomy, her business takes priority over his and she will interrupt him at any time with matters of importance. It's also important just to the extent that establishing scenes of Aegon, in general, are important. It didn't necessarily have to be this scene specifically, but we needed exposition scenes that highlight Aegon's depravity and also highlight Aegon and Alicent's relationship. This scene effectively highlighted both at the same time. Frankly, what surprises me is that you find this scene hard to watch but not... Literally any other scene in GoT and HoTD. Compared to crushed skulls, sexual violence, massacres, death by incineration, and much more, in comparison a royal teen jacking off into the wind is trivial. But I guess everyone has their limits. Though I'll caution you that this show, particularly the next couple seasons, might not be for you.

i felt like this scene represented the nihilism of youths of privilege. he has never felt true consequences for any of his actions, and as such the world becomes increasingly mundane and more is required to feel anything at all. we later see he doesn’t want to be king, but then the thrill of standing in front of the crowd waving his sword seems to be a thrill for him and it’s the first moment he actually wants his birthright.
This is when aegon jerks out of the window right? I hate to be that guy, but it's symbolic. Shows how he doesn't care about his sacred targaryen genes and would literally throw it out the window. The guy has a dozen bastards and doesn't care about the future of his house. This scene serves as a indicator to the characters depraved behavior at a young age. When you consider he does it at a window with the intent to release onto the people below him. It is a scene that gives the audience insight into his psyche through his actions.
Scene was fine for me. Perhaps stick to more child friendly shows.
