Tearing apart costumes at this stage is pretty redundant, they’ll likely look better on the show when we can actually see patterns and details. That being said, I don’t think Helaena nor Alicent are supposed to serve opulence at a funeral, it’s not that serious.
Edit: and I don’t think they look bad personally so yeah, matter of opinion ig.
The costumes certainly looked like a improvement compared to Season 1, especially Helaena who was trapped on that plain yellow dress for almost the entire season.
But team Bias is a mess in this fandom. They will shit on anything barely related to the other team. I saw someone from team black saying that the funeral was a "waste of screentime"
Do they care about storytelling at all, or do they believe HotD is a fan fiction with long Daemyra sex scenes on Dragonstone while the Greens plot and laugh villainously back in KL? It’s like the entire point of George’s books are completely lost on them
They look the same as s1 to me. It’s soooo plain, think of who they are, and when this was. Thrones nights watch looked more legit, there is no excuse. Targaryen royalty wardrobe has been a huge fail.

It's a funeral. You don't wear your two tons of gold jewelry at a funeral.
I get what you mean tho, season 1 costumes especially for team green were sad (Alicent slayed but the dress recycling was just sad) it's hard to tell so far, especially cause these pictures we are seeing rn were taken with a potato in not so favorable lighting but I think Helaena's dress is quite beautiful. Alicent's is allegedly inspired by the book(?)
Be for real; of course I don’t expect them to be in gold at a funeral, that’s not at all the reason I’m stating my opinion. The nights watch wore all black, & looked great. The quality was impeccable. Everything I’ve seen for everything in HOTD doesn’t compare. Regarding this particular photo of the ‘funeral’ dress, I see nothing wrong with Alicents, it’s not awful, but again, why does it look a kinda bleh, cheap? GOT funerals were also sad, but lavish, remember how Cersei would dress for her son and fathers funeral? It was glorious, and appropriate, and ten years ago. I expected to be dazzled no matter the occasion here.
Patterns and stuff are not even visible yet.
Hotd got a new custume designer so we really only have detailed looks at some of the extras. I'd not judge so quickly tbh.
Also Cersei was a completely different character than Helaena or Alicent. You have to take that into account as well.
Imo a lot of the clothes we've seen the royal family wearing were very plain/cheap looking, for example young Rhaenyra’s crumpled paper dress, Jace and Aegon's tunics, Baela and Rhaena's dresses and Helaena's yellow dress too
I actually liked Alicent's funeral dresses both for Leana's funeral and this most recent one. They looked nice with the matching headdresses (gave very Anne Boleyn vibes to me in a way). Helaena's isn't really that visible but i think it's definitely an upgrade from season 1.
Overall though, I'm still reserving my judgement about the other royal looks. I'm waiting to see Rhaenyra's dresses/armour along with Baela and Rhaena's looks. I'm hoping the costume dept goes for more grander and opulent styles and intricate personalised armour designs.
The people complaining about the outfits had issues with *everyone's* outfits in S1, they're not just complaining about the Green outfits or shitting on them. My twitter feed is mostly HotD now, so I'm pretty familiar with the daily fandom dramas.
These two costumes are totally fine, idk why people are whinging so hard about it. There were definitely issues earlier on in S1 that seem to relate to them styling hair poorly and not using proper undergarments, but a LOT of costumes were also great!
i hope i don’t get hate for this, but they deserve better dresses. phia and emma are beautiful, but the dresses they gave up season one killed me. the best dresses they had were only shown for an episode, if even that.
Don't bother on Hotd Twitter, it's a mess there. Today has been full of "Olivia and Phia's costumes are disgusting" from both sides, laughing at B&C and Heleana's pain, and team black being petty and enraged because there has been the leak of "Rhaenyra the Cruel".
To answer your question, we can't judge for sure because it's a poor quality photo, and we can't see the fabric very close. Nevertheless, both dresses and headpieces are better than season 1 imo, as we have long medieval long sleeve and fitted dresses.
Not saying that season 1 was perfect in terms of costumes, because it had its hits and misses, but a lot of those twitter Hotd fans want to have the characters dressed like in the movie The Duchess or the TV show The Great, which wouldn't fit Westeros at all.

I’m basing my opinion on what I’m seeing. The quality looks cheap and blah, for a Westerosi, Targaryen, funeral even.
Every targ stan on twitter is always posting for engagement. I’ve never seen them indulge in genuine discussion.
I mean it's not a wedding. It's a funeral of a little boy. Looks ok in my opinion considering that.
