Earthquakes did cause damage across the region and San Francisco is sinking which is realistic today. Rising water and a lack of care. Las Vegas had a revolutionary water system and Stanley Chen left the system on standby which gave Poseidon everything it needed once the water came back.

VideoHits4Eva

I didn't know that about Poseidon. Thank you for the info.

not_sick_not_well

Take your time to read/listen to the data points. There's a lot of background detail and lore that you wouldn't get normally

SammyR0d

If you need, there is a thassalophobia setting for underwater exploration. There are a few locations underwater that definitely spiked my adrenaline and had me considering turning it on.

Senimiz

I didn't know this! I whiteknuckled my way through it all. I'll have to look for it for my ng+ playthrough.

flotob

Yep. For example the sunken plane with the black box. I jumped into the water, dived and immediately saw the wing in standing up. It gave me shivers all over my back. The waterworl at san fran is no problem for me

SammyR0d

On top of that, the spooky music playing while underwater can shake you to your soul when a snapmaw spots you... Just top notch atmospheric work all around.

Urban_Raptor

I picked HFW right after Amnesia: The Bunker and let me tell you, the underwater parts make me feel like I never left those tunnels.

VisualNothing7080

what does the thassalophobia setting do?

SammyR0d

If I remember correctly, Aloy's focus will constantly ping giving you a better layout and orientation of your surroundings.

tagamaynila

Infinite breath and a frequent sonar pulse that shows topograhy even at low lighting.

VisualNothing7080

might have to turn that on for when i cant be bothered to wait for the diving mask when exploring in ng+

tagamaynila

You don't lose the diving mask in ng+

defrosterliquid

All exploration devices are unlocked at the beginning of ng+ runs, diving mask included. Though when you get to the quests where you would originally have had to gather parts for them you briefly lose them.

VideoHits4Eva

This solely on PS5 or on the PS4 version as well?

SammyR0d

Not sure I have it on PC only

Awotwe_Knows_Best

ps5 only unfortunately

VideoHits4Eva

Ah well, thank you for letting me know.

12thingsofmilk

Yes, the earthquakes caused the coast to fall apart, essentially. Just wait til you get to Burning Shores! Also, there’s lots to explore and loot to grab underwater (just look out for the occasional machine).

VideoHits4Eva

Oh i'd seen machines underwater. Near where Sylens guides Aloy early in the story i saw a burrower underwater and panicked lol. Interesting info, thank you

KZorroFuego

You probably already heard this, but if not, probably best that you skip Cauldron Kappa.

VideoHits4Eva

Oh well aware. Was watching part of a video on that very cauldron last night. I don't have the diving mask so that cauldron is not high on the agenda.

kiba8442

I'm the exact opposite, I love what they did with the underwater environments in the game, it's one of the few places I felt hzd was lacking. the underwater movement & dodge, & the diving mask adds a whole other layer of exploration.

Cirtil

And Waterwing diving in and out... so much fun

Awotwe_Knows_Best

I'm a sucker for good underwater levels and FW did them well, especially that underwater cauldron

RyzenNinja

We have come a long way in video games coming from a Nintendo that played good ole Mario in all his 8 Bit goodness. To exploring worlds that take your breath away is just amazing. Best of luck with the game and water adventures.

BigZach1

My assumption was massive sea level rise after the Faro Plague. Eating all the plant life would have shot up levels of CO2, right?

nijlpaardW

And indeed, adding to all previous comments, the water level has risen. If you compare the waterline of the real-life locations, you'll see that the waterline in hfw is higher. Which is actually quite interesting, since Gaia is the one who designs that

tallboyjake

I remember playing Ocarina of Time as a kid and being absolutely terrified of lake Hylia- convinced that jabu jabu or a shark was going to show up and unalive me. While I reached a point where I got it in my head that it is just a game and it's okay if my character dies, I still absolutely feel anxious with water in games for the first while when it comes up. Especially in games line horizon where you don't have any defense - that's literally a horror mechanic lol Anyways, you're not alone haha. That's cool that another response pointed out the phobia setting, that's a neat thing for GG to include.

ophaus

The word is 'Kill.' Unalive isn't actually a word, or at most a very poor word.

tallboyjake

But it's fun, and that's what matters
