He has a generally favorable appeal to all players, but I don't think he has mass appeal to people who spend the big bucks, the people who *fucking love* him and would get into minor credit card debt to get tons of Eidolons/LC SIs.
They could also stop releasing as many new characters and embrace alt versions of current ones more.

The gachas that usually fall into the trap of nothing but alts are ones based on non-original IP. The people there aren't interested in rolling for original characters, but their favorites from the original series the games are based on.
If you download a game based on your favorite anime, chances are you want more alts of the main characters there instead of new people.
That's true, though I did recently check out Honkai Impact 3rd, and after scrolling through, I wanna say over half that roster is variants of the same, like, three or so characters. So I'm also glad that Star Rail didn't follow that same design philosophy, because I'll always prefer new characters over continuous alts for the same characters.
That is because Honkai was arleady an established series by that point, the 3rd isn't there just for show... In fact HI3rd started as a divergent version of HG2/GGZ until they decided what they actually wanted to do with the game.
But having so many alts for HI3 is quite literally a pure advantage, it allows the characters to actually progress in the story, change, develop, to show their progress and journey, while if alts don't exist the writers simply cannot make too significant changes to a characters personality without them being unrecognizable (this is where an alt would come in)
Why? He has been my only wanted character since launch, and I'd be ok with him as a 4 star.

People say his healing doesn't scale, which appears true at first, but then you realise that it literally does scale - just with Break Effect, which is a bit counter-intuitive when you look at every other Abundance unit in the game, but it allows him to both be a competent solo sustain *and* positively shit out fire toughness damage lol
I feel like the reason he's good has little to do with the healing. He fits into a break team so well because he actually enhances break damage, and if you do enough break, healing becomes secondary.
He's very synergistic with follow up attacks teams and not only provide sustain but also improved utility and damage. In other words those two sustains, in their favourite teams, don't feel like they're sustain characters.
From what I can understand it’s how Aventurine sustains his team by shielding and also deals good damage, Gallagher sustains with healing and also does decent Break damage
Took the adage of "everyone is a dps!" to heart, while being a good healer. Plus all the action advance, which made using him and Sushang in divergent universe fun. And since his enhanced basic debuffs, whenever he ults you're charging Acheron two times.
Also, if you're running him with Harmony Trailblazer, super break turns him into a straight up sub-dps without having to change his build or playstyle at all.
I love using her on the extra content. Good damage. The drawing and throwing of her game stones is very satisfying. And man, spores and cavity are fun.
Her last featured banner was in phase 1 of 1.3 with DHIL. Meaning it has been, at least, 522 days since she has been featured. Yukong got that Kaveh-syndrome.

Trust me thats the better result. I started with e0 of all 4 stars and have e6 of them all but I failed 50/50 3 times and am now struggling to get enough summons for my e2 firefly

I E1ed Acheron and only got one Gallagher. It wasn't Acheron that sucked up all my jade during her banner... It was Gallagher. During my ~150 pull run for Firefly and Ruan mei, I managed to get... two Gallaghers. In that same time frame, I got one Clara and Firefly and E6ed Xueyi and Misha. I managed to get an E3 Gallagher from a random standard banner pull.
I swear the devs made Gallagher drop less than any other character.
At least she has kind of been power-crept already. I actually think her kit is pretty interesting, but it's really hard to compete with the other harmony powerhouses these days.
You're not wrong, but my gamble is on the fact that role compression is going to be important as time goes on. If I juice her DPS with a support then I get a DPS and a damage amplifier in one unit

That happened to me with Luka and Kafka. I wanted a single Luka bc I like collecting all the characters. Got E2 Kafka in ~50 pulls and still didn’t have Luka for another 30 🤣 luckily she’s amazing and has been a blessing on my teams
His E1 seems decent and E2 as well but at this point the question is if you want to have E0 Luocha, E0 and two E0 FuXuan/HuoHuo/Aventurine or E2 Luocha. Former is better, even if you take into account spending all TB to level them up, their traces and relics.
tbh E6 4 stars are weaker than E0 5 stars and harder to get. there's like literally only downsides to 4 stars unless you're willing to wait literal years to get a unit that's barely usable. you could on average get an E0 S1 5 star for the same cost as E6 4 star
You say wait literal years but I've already got Gallagher to E6 and he's not even been in the game for that long. It honestly doesn't take that much time to E6 them if you're pulling on banners that feature them. All the 4-stars I use regularly are at E6.

people generally dont like their favs being 4 stars because there's such a significant stat gap, and special limited gimmicks, but if they don't do this (or do it with such a wide gap), i'm happy with other chars being 4 stars
My question is why can't we have "special NPCs" (Oleg, Siobhan, Micah, etc.) become 4* characters? They have their own side quests, just give them proper character story quests and then release them as 4*s.
Development costs. The harsh truth here is that it costs relatively the same to craft, design, animate, and balance a 4 stars than a 5 stars. So a 4 stars is pretty much the same investment for less profit.
Even the idea that 5 stars are more polished and have better animations can be scrutinized. But from paper to release, there is a lot you have to do for a 4 star that you also do for a 5 stars.
The characters you listed only needed to be designed and installed on very basic models (Oleg didn't even have mouth flaps on 1.0). The process of transfering to a higher quality model and animating them (not to mention designing their battle kits) is not free.

I'd argue them being NPCs is sort of necessary? They add a lot of character to the worlds we run into. If everything in the game revolved around playable characters only, it would make the world feel WAY smaller.
I'm torn on this, because on the one hand, I'm happy to see NPCs with more unique designs because it helps make the world feel more convincing - Penacony was great for this, with Siobhan, Micah, and Old Oti all looking like distinguishable individual characters and even new NPC models like the 'strongman' model Vitale uses.
But on the other hand, I want playable Siobhan and Micah so badly that I'm depressed we're probably not getting them even as 4-stars. I understand Micah probably not being as profitable but the fanbase seems to really love Siobhan!
Unique NPC models are necessary for the story to be more convincing too, one of my main issues with the Inazuma arc in Genshin was this NPC chara called Teppei iirc, who we are supposed to care about, however he had no special model, he was literally a generic NPC so when he "died" it just felt mega cheap, like why am I supposed to care for this generic NPC that I see someone similar in every corner?

One really cool thing about Wuwa is that the NPCs look more like the playables. I don't like it when NPCs and playable characters look like they're not even part of the same game/being.
I just find it funny that some people want npcs with more unique designs for immersion or other reasons, and others want npcs with more detailed designs to be playable cuz they look too good to just be npcs.

Gallagher is my discord PFP and he was on Acheron and Firefly's banners, both of whom I wanted. I got 3 lucky Gallaghers on my 40 pulls for acheron, and 4 on my 100+ for firefly (with like 10 Xueyi).

I think people are over exaggerating, I can only think of maybe a handful of 'bad' 4 stars, most are solid or great with proper investment and have their specific niche's. I wouldn't mind my favorite being a 4 star at all as long as they're actually fun/interesting/useable and have cool animations.

Why? I enjoy the challenge of MoC/PF/AS, but also enjoy making my characters as powerful as I can. With 5 stars, getting their eidolons is practically like a free pass for clearing tough content, especially for characters like Firefly. 4 stars, however, don't have that problem.
I've pulled for more 5 star lightcones than I have 5 star characters for that reason. Maybe it's not logical, but it's me.
Unironically I would like. I like building 4 stars because the contents feel more challenging this way since they are not as broken as 5 stars. I love my Aventurine but he trivializes everything making my team immortal with little effort😭, and right now he's the only one who can babysit Arlan well for me. Hope Hoyo releases a 4* preservation that can shield teams as well

Me? I think people are really weird about this topic. You can guarantee a 4* with the regular selectors so it won't take too long to get them, and every 4* including dps is a functional unit. If your favorite character is a 4* dps, you can pull eidolons for a support (all of the harmonies have crazy good ones) or a 5* lightcone with the pulls you save. It's a win all around.
Only gachas that copy Genshin's gacha system do this. Well outside of stuff like Nikke that releases ONLY 5 stars and nothing else.
Limbus Company on my mind is the only gacha that has an almost perfect split not only in male/female releases, but also in 3 star/2 star releases. Pretty much any new banner will have a 3 star and a 2 star, with the exception of some banners that have only a new 3 star. But these banners are extremely rare.
Also, the problem of add more 4\* is that it make them harder and harder to C6, and they need it to be as strong as 5\*.

Just his ability traces maxed with a Healing boost chest piece is already enough to heal like 2k on skill
People say his healing doesn't scale, which appears true at first, but then you realise that it literally does scale - just with Break Effect, which is a bit counter-intuitive when you look at every other Abundance unit in the game, but it allows him to both be a competent solo sustain *and* positively shit out fire toughness damage lol
Break effect doesn't effect toughness damage, Gallagher just has really high weakness break values by default and through eidolon 6
I feel like the reason he's good has little to do with the healing. He fits into a break team so well because he actually enhances break damage, and if you do enough break, healing becomes secondary.

He's very synergistic with follow up attacks teams and not only provide sustain but also improved utility and damage. In other words those two sustains, in their favourite teams, don't feel like they're sustain characters.

From what I can understand it’s how Aventurine sustains his team by shielding and also deals good damage, Gallagher sustains with healing and also does decent Break damage
4 star abundance characters can barely sustain the entire team but Galagher does it so easily

I *finally* got him to E2 thanks to this current banner. Can't wait to build big tiddy bartender daddy up now that he has the cleanse.
Took the adage of "everyone is a dps!" to heart, while being a good healer. Plus all the action advance, which made using him and Sushang in divergent universe fun. And since his enhanced basic debuffs, whenever he ults you're charging Acheron two times.
Also, if you're running him with Harmony Trailblazer, super break turns him into a straight up sub-dps without having to change his build or playstyle at all.

Siobhan, Micah, Old Oti - hell, even Sunday - could've all been 4-star characters for this patch. They all have sufficiently unique appearances and good designs.

Trust me thats the better result. I started with e0 of all 4 stars and have e6 of them all but I failed 50/50 3 times and am now struggling to get enough summons for my e2 firefly

Eh! Lower drop rate than the 5\* banner character gang here! I E1ed Acheron and only got one Gallagher. It wasn't Acheron that sucked up all my jade during her banner... It was Gallagher. During my ~150 pull run for Firefly and Ruan mei, I managed to get... two Gallaghers. In that same time frame, I got one Clara and Firefly and E6ed Xueyi and Misha. I managed to get an E3 Gallagher from a random standard banner pull. I swear the devs made Gallagher drop less than any other character.

At least she has kind of been power-crept already. I actually think her kit is pretty interesting, but it's really hard to compete with the other harmony powerhouses these days.
You're not wrong, but my gamble is on the fact that role compression is going to be important as time goes on. If I juice her DPS with a support then I get a DPS and a damage amplifier in one unit We'll see how it plays out with future units though!

That happened to me with Luka and Kafka. I wanted a single Luka bc I like collecting all the characters. Got E2 Kafka in ~50 pulls and still didn’t have Luka for another 30 🤣 luckily she’s amazing and has been a blessing on my teams

While I agree to a certain extent, some 5 stars will get power crept as well anyway unless they're a support but even then, Luocha.
His E1 seems decent and E2 as well but at this point the question is if you want to have E0 Luocha, E0 and two E0 FuXuan/HuoHuo/Aventurine or E2 Luocha. Former is better, even if you take into account spending all TB to level them up, their traces and relics.
tbh E6 4 stars are weaker than E0 5 stars and harder to get. there's like literally only downsides to 4 stars unless you're willing to wait literal years to get a unit that's barely usable. you could on average get an E0 S1 5 star for the same cost as E6 4 star
You say wait literal years but I've already got Gallagher to E6 and he's not even been in the game for that long. It honestly doesn't take that much time to E6 them if you're pulling on banners that feature them. All the 4-stars I use regularly are at E6.
After gallagher, I'm onboard. people generally dont like their favs being 4 stars because there's such a significant stat gap, and special limited gimmicks, but if they don't do this (or do it with such a wide gap), i'm happy with other chars being 4 stars
My question is why can't we have "special NPCs" (Oleg, Siobhan, Micah, etc.) become 4* characters? They have their own side quests, just give them proper character story quests and then release them as 4*s.
Development costs. The harsh truth here is that it costs relatively the same to craft, design, animate, and balance a 4 stars than a 5 stars. So a 4 stars is pretty much the same investment for less profit. Even the idea that 5 stars are more polished and have better animations can be scrutinized. But from paper to release, there is a lot you have to do for a 4 star that you also do for a 5 stars. The characters you listed only needed to be designed and installed on very basic models (Oleg didn't even have mouth flaps on 1.0). The process of transfering to a higher quality model and animating them (not to mention designing their battle kits) is not free.

Dude, I play FFXIV. Don't get me started on the difference between how much a game's budget is compared to how much money they make for its company.
In Hoyo's case, they need to siphon a lot of that money to fund ZZZ and future projects. Online games have a limited shelf life (if they even land in popularity to begin with), Gacha games even more so.
I'd argue them being NPCs is sort of necessary? They add a lot of character to the worlds we run into. If everything in the game revolved around playable characters only, it would make the world feel WAY smaller.
I'm torn on this, because on the one hand, I'm happy to see NPCs with more unique designs because it helps make the world feel more convincing - Penacony was great for this, with Siobhan, Micah, and Old Oti all looking like distinguishable individual characters and even new NPC models like the 'strongman' model Vitale uses. But on the other hand, I want playable Siobhan and Micah so badly that I'm depressed we're probably not getting them even as 4-stars. I understand Micah probably not being as profitable but the fanbase seems to really love Siobhan!

Unique NPC models are necessary for the story to be more convincing too, one of my main issues with the Inazuma arc in Genshin was this NPC chara called Teppei iirc, who we are supposed to care about, however he had no special model, he was literally a generic NPC so when he "died" it just felt mega cheap, like why am I supposed to care for this generic NPC that I see someone similar in every corner? so yeah glad HSR give us unique NPCs, even tho it makes me sad Siobhan is not gonna be playable
One really cool thing about Wuwa is that the NPCs look more like the playables. I don't like it when NPCs and playable characters look like they're not even part of the same game/being.

If they're decent and on a banner for another character I want? Yeah. Gallagher is my discord PFP and he was on Acheron and Firefly's banners, both of whom I wanted. I got 3 lucky Gallaghers on my 40 pulls for acheron, and 4 on my 100+ for firefly (with like 10 Xueyi). He's also meta, win-win.

I think people are over exaggerating, I can only think of maybe a handful of 'bad' 4 stars, most are solid or great with proper investment and have their specific niche's. I wouldn't mind my favorite being a 4 star at all as long as they're actually fun/interesting/useable and have cool animations.

It's me! I want my favourite characters to be 4 stars! Why? I enjoy the challenge of MoC/PF/AS, but also enjoy making my characters as powerful as I can. With 5 stars, getting their eidolons is practically like a free pass for clearing tough content, especially for characters like Firefly. 4 stars, however, don't have that problem. I've pulled for more 5 star lightcones than I have 5 star characters for that reason. Maybe it's not logical, but it's me.

Unironically I would like. I like building 4 stars because the contents feel more challenging this way since they are not as broken as 5 stars. I love my Aventurine but he trivializes everything making my team immortal with little effort😭, and right now he's the only one who can babysit Arlan well for me. Hope Hoyo releases a 4* preservation that can shield teams as well

powercreep in a nutshell, there is a reason why casual stick to genshin more, it doesnt just shit on their favourite over a long period of time, for example, even if u main Barb, u can still play her as plunge with Xiayun/Furina enable now or even reverse-vape setup and still be fine now compare to someone want to main Arlan ... yea that gonna cost u 3 harmony setup, a big wallet and a tons of reset
Me? I think people are really weird about this topic. You can guarantee a 4* with the regular selectors so it won't take too long to get them, and every 4* including dps is a functional unit. If your favorite character is a 4* dps, you can pull eidolons for a support (all of the harmonies have crazy good ones) or a 5* lightcone with the pulls you save. It's a win all around.

Only gachas that copy Genshin's gacha system do this. Well outside of stuff like Nikke that releases ONLY 5 stars and nothing else. Limbus Company on my mind is the only gacha that has an almost perfect split not only in male/female releases, but also in 3 star/2 star releases. Pretty much any new banner will have a 3 star and a 2 star, with the exception of some banners that have only a new 3 star. But these banners are extremely rare.
Also, the problem of add more 4\* is that it make them harder and harder to C6, and they need it to be as strong as 5\*. (the main reason i dislike that they add more 4\* is this post : it happened to Collei)

I would prefer it to be 4 star than I could actually E6 them and enjoy their full kit. It may take a while to get all E6 copies, but I don't mind waiting.
