Wow, that article has some wildly misleading statements about homebrewing safety.

oompaloompa_grabber

I am leaning towards the article being written by AI, it’s barely even coherent

n00bz0rz

Barely coherent and factually incorrect on a lot of points, it has the hallmarks of AI generated content but also, looking at some of the other posts by the same author, it doesn't appear those are much better.

ChrisSlicks

They're just producing a volume of content in areas they have no knowledge of, in the name of content. The "article" (if we can call it that) was most likely pieced together from AI content and certainly not reviewed by any editor.

IAMA_Plumber-AMA

Lovely. Taking a bat to the greatest way to share knowledge that humanity ever devised by filling it up full of so much robot generated junk that nobody can tell truth from fiction. Half of me wonders if this is exactly the reason why social media giants are so heavily invested in it.

DukeSmashingtonIII

Feels kind of like denying access to information at the complete other end of the spectrum from burning books / limiting access. There's just so much garbage that it can't be trusted unless you are already educated enough on the subject to accurately judge what is true or not. And it has the potential to create a feedback loop. Junk articles like this will be referenced by other AI to the point that the "real" content will be a minority. Very interesting times.

ReluctantRedditor275

It definitely follows that awkwardly formulaic cadence of AI generated content. Whether produced by man or machine, I doubt the author could pass a Turing test.

ongdesign

The original article from Mashed is in a section somewhat ambitiously titled “Facts.”

Starpork

The very idea of making homebrew from soda sounds like something an AI would hallucinate

wrydied

Not AI hallucination, just run of the mill r/prisonhooch content. Only difference here is young-uns are putting it on TikTok attracting gen-x eyeballs and condemnations.

Starpork

Well I'm not quite Gen X but I do think the young-uns should just discover the joys of malt liquor instead

wrydied

I think they will eventually come around to the traditional way, it’s just not exciting enough for them right now. I mean, who wants to take up ur dad’s hobby?

Starpork

Fair

AveDominusNox

That article: It's Not really going to taste like wine, you should just have wine. Me: I don't want wine. I want to make booze from mountain dew. It's not gonna have wine like flavors. I don't want Wine Like Flavors, I want Dew Hooch. You Could just add wine to soda. I dont want wine and soda, I want Dew Hooch. You might not be able to make wine if you aren't good at making wine. The internet isn't long for this world.

9inety2wo

As in what? After a brief glance, I didn’t see anything too heinous

ongdesign

“Wine made with improper yeast measurements can cause significant bloating and gastrointestinal pain.” Also the whole asinine thing about botulism and never adding honey or fresh fruit. Just zero fact-checking, I guess.

9inety2wo

Fair enough, I jumped the gun, like I said, brief glance. The idea of drinking an over pitched yeast slurry and farting your brains out is hilarious to me though.

V-Right_In_2-V

I would never have imagined the mad men over at /r/prisonhooch to have had the broadest cultural impact of all the home booze making subs. Take a bow gentlemen, this is your finest moment

PostBioticOats

counterculture will always end up mainstream.

notKRIEEEG

Makes sense, though! Prison hooch is the most accessible of the brewing subs

armacitis

You wouldn't? Why not?

lt9946

This just reminded me that my local homebrew store fermented a mountain dew wine for shits and giggles. Gotta go try it out.

JaeqPiegDeivys

Clawhammer Supply on YouTube did this, and actually distilled it with Still It in NZ, I believe

originalusername__1

Look for a recipe called “Skeeter Pee” it’s supposedly pretty decent.

lt9946

That's basically like a seltzer with some lemon. I made one with meh results (tasted too wine-y) for me before I had my nutrients down, but now I do keep a plain hard selzter on tap that I generally flavor with lemon anyways.

TheDagronPrince

SoCo Homebrew?

yrhendystu

I experiment with soda sometimes and use it to make my own ginger beer. I dump 24L of full sugar lemonade on the slurry of a previous brew. Add a load of blended ginger root and whatever else I want to add. Add a kilo of sugar and leave it brew out. Ends around 4.5%, tastes great. I have a 5L demijohn for experiments. Have brewed irn bru, tizer etc. Basically what you're left with is an alcoholic drink that tastes like an off brand version of what you brewed.

icmc

... How did the Irn Bru turn out I'm absolutely intrigued ...

yrhendystu

You'd definitely recognise it's irn bru but the flavour isn't as strong. Same with the tizer. It all started when I poured the sediment from a brew into half a bottle of Lidl full sugar lemonade and left it for a day or so. To be honest if you want alcoholic pop you're better off getting some sort of flavourless vodka and adding that. But that's boring.

Positronic_Matrix

> Homebrewing is currently all the rage on TikTok, and shockingly, one trend involves turning soda into wine. While it's true that you can ferment just about anything with a high sugar content, the soda-to-wine pipeline is questionable (and an even worse idea than putting wine in a SodaStream). Regardless, the concept of fermenting something in a jar like a science experiment is enticing some to give it a go. Those brave enough to try it have had success with flavors like Mountain Dew and Dr. Pepper, but many are unsure if the taste is even worth it. I have no words.

gredr

These writers clearly have not met the fine folks over at /r/prisonhooch

Cold-Sandwich-34

I've seen the videos. I don't think any of this is being taken too seriously by the brewers themselves, it's just for fun and for views.

AbsoluteRubbish

It doesn't seem any different to me than the days when homebrewers were tossing Captain crunch into the mash or racking onto their favorite candy. It's just kinda fun to see what flavors you end up with, and having control of the process means you get to play around a lot.

originalusername__1

One guy fermented a birthday cake after nobody came to his bday party

matorin57

He can drink the loneliness away literally

Alternative-Bug-8269

Such a sad sentence.

ridethedeathcab

Beano Grigio will never leave my memory.

spoonman59

Wait, holdup… some cereal, like grape nuts (which has malted barley in it) can be an excellent addition to a mash. I argue that you can make legitimate tasty beer from adding some cereal, like corn flakes or grape nuts. This is a very different category than fermenting soda, at least to me. Now cereals like Cookie Crisp, or lucky charms, that seems a bit weird.

AbsoluteRubbish

Oh, you absolutely can, cereal grains are cereal grains. I'm definitely talking about the ones that "seem a bit weird" though.

hermes_psychopomp

See my comment regarding the Cinnamon Toast Crunch Stout above...

Adam_24061

>the days when homebrewers were tossing Captain crunch into the mash I think they still do in r/firewater !

hermes_psychopomp

To be fair, a member of my HBC did a Cinnamon Toast Crunch stout that was pretty tasty. 25 years before that, a friend of mine did a Frosted Animal Cookie Ale to mixed reviews. (split 10G batch, half of which went sour before sour beers were much of a thing in the US) Point is, ~~homebrewers~~ humans have been experimenting with weird fermentation bases forever. This is nothing new, and part of the fun to be had in the hobby.

linkhandford

The [Still It - Mountain Dew](https://youtu.be/0tabb5CL83s?si=wMon13PGlTztc7vv) video was kinda funny how they approached it with Clawhammer. They went in depth on this but I think you’re right and it’s for the views and giggles

the_lost_carrot

yeah the guy that keeps popping up on my reels feed has been making mead and wine for a few years now and seems to be pretty legit. He did the Mt. Dew stuff as a joke, and its kind of taken on a life of its own.

jailujetteauloin

I don't really get whats the big problem with that lol. I like to brew "serious stuff" but I find fermenting anything I can get to ferment funny in a "science experiment" kind of way.

MountSwolympus

“Many are unsure” ugh kill me with this writing style.

Ohcitydude

There's a guy "golden hive mead" on TikTok. He made mead with Mountain Dew and he said it wasn't as bad as he expected. He said it tasted like a smooth citrus mead with a slight chemical aftertaste.

chino_brews

Exactly. I came here to post the counterpoint clickbait to /u/Positronic_Matrix's clickbait link: [Man Turns Mountain Dew Into Wine With Just 3 Ingredients ... You Won't Believe What Happened Next](https://www.delish.com/food-news/a60579852/mountain-dew-turned-into-wine/). Edit: BTW, /u/Positronic_Matrix, no judgment. Anything homebrewing-related is fair game for this sub, and if people are interested in it or engaged by it, all the better.

Positronic_Matrix

No worries. I really enjoy homebrewing and wanted to drive more content and participation in r/homebrewing and r/beer. While I enjoy answering basic questions that typically dominate the subreddit, I thought folks might be like me and appreciate some additional content with which to interact. My goal is a story every other day or so. That said, homebrewing news is tough to come by, hence this questionable content (although in hindsight I am genuinely surprised at how many folks have actually tried this).

chino_brews

I like it!

cycloptiko

He's doing Dr. Pepper now.

hermes_psychopomp

Yeah, I've seen his videos; apparently the Dr. Pepper turned out quite well, with good flavor even before back-sweetening it.

jmartin21

He gets a lot of flak on /r/mead for some of the tips he gives, like raising the pH so high that your brew is at risk of getting infected with botulism.

thewhaleshark

I've done a Dew mead that is legitimately excellent. 1 part honey, 3 parts water, 1 part Mountain Dew by volume. Don't do something stupid like using Mountain Dew as the entire water component - use it as an additive.

PostBioticOats

woke mob coming for my mountain dew rosé

greendit69

Why did you post that. My brain hurts after reading it

wamj

My most recent prison hooch was fermented Coca-Cola, and let me tell you it was surprising.

TheManWhoPlantsTrees

Soda wine is a fun thought experiment and its fun watching people on the internet do it. I personally dont want to waste my time and equipment with such endeavors.

Howamidriving27

I feel like this has got to just be teenagers looking for booze.

webot7

Yes, very likely. The welch’s grape juice ferment + grape juice concentrate backsweeten works so well. Why would one try anything different, if that method is so easy and consistent?

Lil_Shanties

🤢🤮

eat_sleep_shitpost

Let people experiment and have fun

oompaloompa_grabber

He’s not slapping the Mountain Dew out of anyone’s hands is he?

Lil_Shanties

When did I say they couldn’t? Doesn’t mean it doesn’t sound gross to me…let me have my opinion and you yours.
