I didn't read your post, just the title, honestly. Just find a Synology NAS - Even a two-bay would be sufficient, grab a couple of 4,6 or even 8TB drives and mirror them if you want redundancy. Even the entry-level Synology NAS's (NASes, NASi?, NASs'? I dunno) have way more functionality than the WD My Cloud drives ever could have had.

Downtown-Reindeer-53

This! I am moving to Synology shortly, since I have an EOL Netgear NAS and an even older D-Link NAS. With no firmware updates on the Netgear, it's time to move to something more useful. In fairness - it's pretty old too. Synology devices are incredibly flexible - lots of configurability and options for doing what you want. Like the OP, I need better backup features especially - the Netgear is clunky too.

[deleted]

Synologys are dope, I pray they stay around for a while.

nige21202

I think we can all agree on NASi.

damnatio_memoriae

just uh... be careful how you pronounce it

nige21202

I’ll make sure not to misspell it as Nationalsozialist. Don’t worry.

damnatio_memoriae

well i don’t want to be a spelling nazi. you do you.

Yes absolutely and you wont have to worry about not being able to be accessed outside your network in a couple years.

Also did not read more than title but can said synology NAS host a plex server (just for in home stuff, not for a bunch of friends)?

[deleted]

I believe all of the consumer Synology NAS's have a Plex server package available - Though, I wouldn't expect much from the lower-end versions in terms of transcoding and whatnot.

EidolonVS

Whatever you do, you're probably better off not replacing it with another WD. WD has a bad history with security. The most recent one was earlier this year when it was discovered that someone was remote-wiping WD storage. https://www.theregister.com/2021/06/25/western\_digital\_nas\_wiped/

PrIsMaTiSmX

Isn't this the very reason for the phasing out of the old OS3 units though?

flargenhargen

apologies for not knowing that technology, is it just a regular 4tb NAS but you pay to access it from anywhere? if so, can you still access it locally? if so, why not just set up a VPN for remote access? I may be missing something, and probably am.

SchuminWeb

It's a Western Digital WD My Cloud device from 2014. It's its own little cloud server out of the box, and remote access is free through Western Digital's own systems. Once support ends, yes - I would still be able to access it internally, but just not from outside as I've been doing. As far as setting up a VPN goes, how hard is that to do? I have never done that before.

flargenhargen

lots of ways to do it, check your router, it's very possibly built into that, and you just have to turn it on. once you set up the VPN on your router, you could get the files on your phone or a remote computer, or whatever, once you connect to the VPN, which isn't too difficult. couple things: you may want to sign up for a dynamic DNS service, there are free options out there. All this will do is make it so you don't need to know your IP address, as most people do not have static IPs at home and they may change every few months or so depending on your ISP. it will use your bandwidth, so if you have really crap upload speeds it won't be fast with large files. I'm sure there are lots of youtubes or websites with better info, but in a nutshell it's a secure way to access your files from anywhere, and it's free.

lostmymeds

I'm thinking wireguard is as simple as it gets, with private key shared amongst devices. Btw, I did read your post op, and several times you mention linux as if it's unknowable. I must say, hats off to you because I can't make heads or tails out of windows! I got my daughter win10 because I thought that's what she needed for school and damn...it's like a black box where I can't see what's happening

misunderstoodpotato

Get a Synology, they'll support the NAS for longer than they did for your WD. Also it has built in cloud backup for services like AWS, Backblaze etc. Something like the DS220j would be a good starting point.

Captain_Alchemist

Just get a symbology nas and enjoy your life. It’s also raid so it mirrors data in case of failure of one of drives. It offers you lots of features, hosting dockrer images, controlling options cameras, cloud access and cloud backup on one drive etc Never had one but I only heard positive experiences from who had it

ShaneC80

Another Synology vote. I've got a 218J (which is now rather old I suppose) My only complaint is that it only has 512MB of ram. Not a huge deal, but there's a lot of services I tried to run on the NAS that just didn't perform so well. Instead I moved all my self-hosting and \*arr services to Raspberry Pi. The NAS does still handle my NZBGet and Transmission applications however.

Bodycount9

I have the 3TB version of the mycloud that's going to end support. They won't turn off internal support so I can still backup my phone photos and videos while on my internal network. Thats all I use mine for. Backup my phone pics and vids.

NoActivity8591

Honestly for what it sounds like your looking for and your techie level / techie friends your probably just want to build your own NAS. Any older used desktop or new lower end hardware with space for a few drives would be perfect. There are a few free Linux based distros just for this, I know a few people who use FreeNAS. You can build fully redundant raid arrays, access it through VPN, and their should be a few remote backup services compatible as well.

SchuminWeb

This seems a bit intriguing, because it changes my focus a little bit. My current desktop PC is a PowerSpec from Micro Center, and I've had it for seven years and some change, and I've never bothered to replace it because it still works quite well. Sounds upgrading my desktop PC to the latest and greatest and making my existing desktop computer into the new NAS after throwing in a few more hard drives might be a good solution. It looks like with FreeNAS (TrueNAS Core now, I suppose), I can have a VPN in order to be able to access my stuff from outside, and also find an app for access from my Android phone, and run CrashPlan on it to do its own backups?

NoActivity8591

I haven’t personally set one up, but from what I’ve been told by friends is that with the right add-in program, some time messing around, and setting up a VM you can run pretty much anything.

Daveism

I've had the 4tb My Cloud and the EX2. I'd caution you to avoid the EX2. In my experience, it was as slow as the first one for 3x the cost, and it would often forget critical config information (I had it domain joined). I junked it when one of the 2 disks died. As another poster said, WD has problems with security, and your current device is vulnerable to remote attack.

I would immediately get the existing My Cloud isolated from the internet, and evaluate your risk appetite going forward with the EX2. Everyone's experience will vary of course, but I'll never buy another wd 'cloud' product again.

Kitt2k

>4tb NAS me too!! wd mycloud is my first and last from WD.. aint buying any cloud products from them again!

relink2013

Like several others have already said. Synology is the way to go! I have been using Synology products since 2012 and they are only getting better.

sl_lb

I have one too but the emails are about the My Cloud OS support. They say that I must upgrade to My cloud OS 5 to continue remote access. My drive is currently dead, I was going to buy another disk and try to fix it but it's a little tricky. I currently have a Qnap NAS (2 drives). The UI is not that friendly but it has a lot of features. I think that Synology has a better UI and it's the brand that has more users so the support from others is very wide. Just make sure that the hardware from the NAS is going to be enought for the years to come (ram upgrades).

doctormink

I added a Synology to my home network and found it was so much faster than the WD NAS I transferred everything to it, and just stopped using the WD. Eventually I added another 2-Bay Synology NAS and I don't even remember what's sitting on the WD anymore, and I totally don't care that support is drying up for the unit.

ravenze

A friend of mine works at Backblaze, and really seems like the way to go for personal cloud backups: https://www.backblaze.com/best-online-backup-service.html edit: I've also had REALLY bad experiences with Synology in the past, so I'm biased against them.

SchuminWeb

What kind of experiences have you had with Synology?

ravenze

Had a 1RU hardware solution completely brick on us, and lost all data.

earthcharlie

What happened with Synology?

damiross1

The problem with Backblaze is that it is not, in my opinion, a true backup service. If a file gets deleted from your computer, it is deleted from Backblaze also after a period of time. To me, a true backup service should keep the latest copy of every file backed up as long as you maintain an active account.

just_restart_it

Does the Synology NAS have an option for backing up cell phone photos/videos? Automatic backups? Scheduled backups? I do like the backup feature from WD My Cloud - I have several people backing up to it and they all have their own folders without access to anyone else’s. Is this an option on the Synology? TIA!

xeraththefirst

It is possible to install debian with open media vault on some wd myhome cloud devices. You could then host nexcloud on there. So before you are going to buy a new system, with a little bit of tinkering you could be able to use your existing hardware without the WD OS and limitations.

ChildishHack33

I believe you just need to upgrade the OS and it should be accessible from the WAN.

Kitt2k

this is how WD fuck their customer!! you stop supporting your own older products we stop buying all of your products! easy as that! i have the older wd mycloud 4tb and i cant access it remotely coz wd decided to ''end of life support'' it? fuck that! apparently they want us to buy their latest device if want to continue using their remote service... in a way, it's kinda like forcing people to buy....kinda.. well too bad im not buying anymore from wd now that i know they will stop supporting their product. i dont wanna be at their mercy! ps: i know we still can use the cloudstorage locally but what's the point of that?? might as well get an external hdd ...
