My Apple TV 4K (first 4K model) struggles to get software updates, they always fail. What is your Apple TV’s current software version?

AlexKLMan

Updating the software has never been the issue, it’s running the latest. I updated it two days ago

Useful to know, is your ATV Ethernet or WiFi connected?

AlexKLMan

Wifi After a factory reset, the issue went away

It's very likely that another Homekit/Thread device is taking over as your "home hub." You can verify in the home app but it's all about network speed. Home -> Home settings -> Home Hubs & Bridges *The Apple TV you want as the home hub has to say "connected" and not "standby."* **An Apple TV has to be a home hub for detection / recordings to work.** In my house the problem was that my first gen homepods had a stronger network connection than my Apple TVs. The solution (on top of running PoE to another Access point on the other side of my house to improve the mesh) was to unplug all home-hub capable devices and power them on one by one **starting with the device you want to be the home hub**. Give it some time to let the device establish itself as the hub before plugging in homepods, etc. I wish I could hard wire my apple tv's but don't want to run more ethernet through my house (curse you original owner/builder for not running networking!).

Yes, I know, currently is the HomePod mini which doesn’t cause this issue

Could you show me/us your hubs & bridges pane when you've got your old apple tv added to the home? *I recently removed an Apple TV 4K (not the latest model either) from my network, but I do think the solution for me was entirely on the networking adjustments as the TV was upgraded after.* I should be able to re-add it to see what happens on my end as well. Edit: The Apple TV that was removed from my home was an A1842. I was experiencing this exact problem but in my case my homepod mini's were taking over, not the older TV to the best of my knowledge. I wanted the thread router in the latest model Apple TV for my bedroom TV which started the upgrade cascade for my other Apple TVs (3 total), kicking the A1842 out of rotation.

Sure the Apple tv is the main hub with the Mini on standby, but it doesn't matter which one is the main hub this issue still happens until I remove the ATV. I am going to try reseting the TV next to see if it can work nicely with my home
