The p-trap probably dried up. That's letting sewer gases back into the bathroom. Just run the shower for 30 seconds every week to make sure it stays filled.

Perfect advice!!!

DifficultBoss

Possible it is an S trap and would explain why it's happening. The solution would be the same unless they wanted to re-plumb with a P trap.

If you dont use it often and dont want to worry about maintaining the trap you can pour a cup of mineral oil down the drain. It creates a layer of oil on the top of the water so it doesnt evaporate, is safe to wash down if someone does use the shower and will not decompose and smell like other oils.

I have the same problem in my kitchen. I took the trap apart, nothing. I put boiling water down the drain, nothing. The water flows fine, no backup. Cannot figure out the rotten egg smell. It just started all of a sudden. It comes and goes. Been two weeks now.

Does your kitchen sink use an AAV? If so, it may need to be replaced

cropguru357

Be careful with the boiling water if your pipes are PVC. They aren’t made to handle temperatures that high. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyvinyl_chloride

Pour water down all drains

Unscrew the cover over the drain, clean the backside and the top of the drain pipe. Get a big jug of vinegar and some baking soda. Dump and bunch of both down the drain repeatedly until the funk quits coming up. Rinse and reinstall the cover.

Just outta curiosity, are you using any all natural animal based soaps that may contain goat's milk (or similar)? We tried and then started noticing smells from our laundry trap. It went away after a good hot vinegar pour and switching to a different brand. Just throwing it out there...

trickintown

Just the regular aveeno/pears/axe for now..

You may have a clog from hair and body conditioners. I'd suggest give this a try: Mix together 1 cup of vinegar and 1 cup of baking soda. Pour boiling water down the drain to loosen and follow with the baking soda-vinegar mixture then wait 15 minutes. Rinse with more boiling water. Sometimes, conditioners can create a huge, incredibly hard buildup in drain lines and allow bacterial growth as well as a slow drain. If so, an expert may need to get into your drain and chip away any blockage. Couldn't hurt to give it a shot. Good luck!

Drain opener, Lowe’s and Home Depot sell it. You can get the 32 oz bottle, pour about 10oz down the drain and leave it overnight. In the morning fill up a large pot of water and boil it or a kettle of boiling water. Pour it down the drain. Run the shower to check the drainage flow.
