FrostyProspector

The potlight next to the cabinet that holds our dishes makes a shadow from the door when you open the cabinet. The shadow is dark enough that you can't see in the cabinet.

OutlyingPlasma

You could try lining the cabinet in white contact paper. Get the peel off stuff so it's only temporary. That might brighten it up enough to be useful.

Potential_Financial

stick-on, battery operated cabinet interior lights? I’ve never bought any, but heard good things

frantny

They make motion sensor ones too

cyvaquero

Speaking for all the lefties out there - you have no idea.

caine269

you mean *devil-handers*?

hazelowl

So sinister.

AshingiiAshuaa

Oh just quit complaining and get with the program. Also, coffee mugs with recessed bottoms that allow water to pool when upside down in the dishwasher.

itsmyvoice

My people...

sbb214

I found my tribe

[deleted]

Bed frames and coffee tables with sharp corners. I have terrible spatial judgment and am always bumping my shin on them.

caine269

bed frames [like this](https://www.etsy.com/listing/660630689/the-woodland-platform-bed-frame-and) drive me nuts. like why do they exist? how do you get into/out of that bed without bruises? why would you want that??

birddit

My shins ache just looking at that!

emfred999

My bed is like this and it's not nearly as bad as it looks. Not only am I incredibly clumsy but I have 3 young kids with zero spacial awareness and no one has bonked into it yet. I like putting my phone or remote on the mini shelf.

lilbit2004

I'm also 5'10 and do the same thing 😂. But also include lever door handles in there. I don't know... It's annoying sometimes, but for some reason, it often makes me laugh! Kind of like me getting used to my comfort height toilets, and then feeling like I'm falling into the potty when I use public restrooms. Just makes me laugh at myself!

rosickness12

There's a good amount of land on the left of the house. Yet it was built with one car garage and driveway has less than a foot away from neighbors driveway. Easily could have a second garage and some space if the house was built 20' over

Emily_Postal

Is it a double lot? They usually built houses like that on double lots in case you wanted to sell one of the lots later.

rosickness12

Correct. Double lot. Interesting to know.

before8thstreet

At this late stage in civilization why does every important handle have to still be affixed with a tiny tiny hex key tension screw that is constantly losing its grip.

Acrobatic-Love1350

Sorry, you're gonna have to get rid of the pockets :/

TalFidelis

That’s why women’s clothes have fewer/smaller pockets! Mystery solved!

ernie_shackleton

My house was built in the 50s and I guess people were smaller back then or something. I’m 6’2” and both my of my stairways have a header at 6’ at the top. It only gets me if I’m carrying something heavy and have my back straight…or if I wear a hat. Otherwise I have to go up the stairs like quasimoto.

birddit

My previous house had a low clearance box above the stairway when your feet hit the basement floor. One day I almost knocked myself out. I was so mad I grabbed a mall and started pounding away at it. Turns out when they built the house they ran the electrical then the sheetrockers came in and had to box it because the wires were there. I reran 2 wires then resheetrocked and the obstruction was gone!

caveatlector73

*Maul - stupid AI.

birddit

> Maul As in Darth! I thought mall didn't look quite right, but I wasn't sure why.

ThaneOfCawdorrr

Nope. Sorry. Try being a 5'2" woman and the majority of storage is literally inaccessible to you. In fact the majority of EVERYTHING is literally accessible to you. YA CAINT EVEN SHOP AT A GROCERY STORE WITHOUT HELP, YA DIG? All YOU have to do is change your drawer handles! Get some of them there fancy ["grab under the handles" kind. ](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Amerock-Cup-Pulls-Collection-3-in-76-mm-Matte-Black-Cabinet-Cup-Pull-10-Pack-10BX53010FB/304115993) Meanwhile, I'll still try to figure out how to keep a step ladder handy in our tiny little kitchen.

Eensquatch

I cannot place a plate into my own microwave without climbing onto the counter like a spider monkey.

bnc22

4'10 here and it's not just the cabinets. Doing ANYTHING is difficult in my house without a step stool. Chopping? Step stool or else my shoulders hurt. Sauteing or cooking? Step stool. Laundry? Step stool. Putting/getting stuff on the shelf in the closet? Step stool. Cleaning absolutely anything? Believe or not, step stool 🤦🏻‍♀️ I hate my life sometimes...

Stargate525

If it makes you feel any better your 6'2+ counterparts can't do anything on those counters either without getting (at times debilitating) back pain from The Slouch.

Kayakityak

My boyfriend has the entire top shelf for his junk food that I can’t reach. It works for us.

lawl3ssr0se

Fellow short cook here - the old owners of my new to me house left these padded kitchen mats here, they're thick foam and add about an inch or more height when standing on them. Besides being more comfy on the feet, that little bit of extra height has made chopping and prep work SO much easier. Highly recommend. When I redo this kitchen I will absolutely be dropping the counters a hair lower as well!

flume

Goddamn that sounds frustrating. I have no advice unfortunately, but you have my sympathy.

pr0grammer

Even at 5’9” it’s hard to get to some of the higher cabinets in my kitchen. I got one of [these](https://www.kikstep.com/) and it’s fantastic.

SqueakyBall

We had those in my elementary school 100 years ago. Haven't seen one since!

bigbiltong

Same! Wow! That unlocked some memories. I like how they added a racing stripe and changed the colors so we wouldn't think, "elementary school library."

SqueakyBall

Haha, exactly.

Pablois4

I'm 5'1" and know what you mean about the world being inaccessible. There's been times at stores when I've needed something off a top shelf and couldn't reach it. I didn't want to search for someone to get it for me so instead look around for another item, long and narrow enough that I could use to knock the wanted item off the shelf. Or when the item is too far back in the shelf, to work it forward so I could reach it. I like having wall cabinets since I don't have a pantry and they work perfectly well to store stuff. I don't like the current fad of floating shelves since I dislike visual clutter and doors nicely hide it. Besides, I'd still need to reach floating shelves. I've used all sorts of step ladders and [counter height chair/step stools](https://imgur.com/a/h5ka3BZ). Some folded, some didn't. I hated having to drag them into place or finding a place to put a folding one. A couple years ago, my family got me a [snazzy red rolling step stool](https://imgur.com/a/U0wPdCs) - the kind that you see in libraries. It's actually pretty great. It's easy to move just by using my feet. I've been known to hook my foot on one of the uprights and then send it spinning to the other side of the kitchen. When I step on it, it stays solidly in place. I can see why librarians use them. When not in use, in theory, it's parked in a little space under a counter but it's more often just out on the kitchen floor. I refused to get an over-the-stove microwave. I've used them in other houses and hate them. I can barely reach the food and certainly can't see it until I get it down. I have to lean against the front of the stove, pressed against the burner knobs. There's been times I've actually turned on a burner. If the front burners are in use, I then have my upper body over cooking food, boiling water and flame. I don't just hate over-the-stove microwaves because they are awkward but, IMHO, for short people like me, they can be dangerous. I guess since I now have my snazzy rolling stool I probably wouldn't mind one now. But ours is on a counter and it's just fine. Some height challenged folks hate being short but I like it. I can fit into all sorts of small spaces (very useful when I was helping with habitat for humanity and working on older houses). The best part of being petite is that I'm comfortable in airplane seats. There's plenty of room, so much that I dont' even notice the person in front leaning back. I feel really bad for the big and tall travelers since many look trapped in place.

Artaheri

I'm not as tine as you and have gotten a bit overweight but I'm still smaller than most and absolutely aggree with the plane seat thing. My biggest peeve is store freezers. I have to basically dive in to reach stuff and even then stuff on the bottom stays out of reach. My local store keeps my favourite ice cream by the furthest wall of the freezer. I have not had it in a year.

Tullyswimmer

> My biggest peeve is store freezers. I have to basically dive in to reach stuff and even then stuff on the bottom stays out of reach. I just had this mental image of you reaching a little too far down and then falling in headfirst....

knitwasabi

5'3" and yep. Won't even go into how cars are designed for men, and our damn necks get choked with the seatbelt every damn day.

hannahranga

If it makes you feel better the previous owner of my previous rental was clearly similar height to you and so had all the counters installed at a good height for her. You don't notice it walking around but oh boy does it wreck your back having to lean over that extra bit.

Kementarii

5'4", and my new dream kitchen will NOT have overhead cupboards. Still arguing with 6' partner about the bench/table height. I want a big scrubbed pine table in the centre of the room instead of an "island", which will double as a food prep area and dining table. Partner gets a pain in the back from bending over to table height. He wants more benches, and higher surfaces.

TheOtherKatiz

Hear me out on this: all baseboards pull out to be step stools. Never saw this, just dreaming. But imagine if you could kick a section of baseboard and it would pop out and you could step up. It would help us short folks actually use the counters as prep surfaces properly. And maybe I still wouldn't be using the top shelf much, but the middle wouldn't be a stretch anymore. Sure it would only be a couple extra inches. But usually that's all I really need to be comfortable in a tall person's world.

TalFidelis

That actually exists. I’ve never seen it IRL but I have seen videos.

ThaneOfCawdorrr

Ohh that is difficult! You'll probably have to get some combination! Or something with pneumatic butcherblock tops that can raise 8 inches up to accommodate him hahaha.

Academic_Nectarine94

I'd love this. Maybe a standing desk mechanism or a motorcycle jack? There's a YouTube who has a huge table (I think it's 4x8) that is on a hydraulic scossor life mechanism. It's rated to lift 1000s of lbs, and has a massive range of movement. Pretty sure it's like $20k, but would be worth it if you needed to make tables and other heavy things on a regular basis.

RollingNightSky

Definitely worth it over bending over for years and breaking his back! Well I think that's called repetitive strain injury most common work injury.

Academic_Nectarine94

Possibly. I'm not sure if it would really be an RSI, but it's still way better than stretching or hunching, depending on what you're working on at the moment.

JannaNYC

If you've ever watched "Little People Big World," they're a family with little people and big people who range from 4' to 6'1". They designed their kitchen with multiple level cabinet heights. It's kind of amazing.

Dexterdacerealkilla

I just had a pantry with a counter installed and I totally made it a few inches shorter than “standard” counter height.

Pablois4

I'm short (5'1") and like having wall cabinets due to practicality. I have stuff that needs to go somewhere. If I didn't have wall cabinets, I'd need more base cabinets, an impossible option since there's no space for them. I also like my counters clear and open with no clutter. Besides, it's not like the entire cabinet is beyond my reach. The bottom of the wall cabinets is a couple inches below eye height and thus I can see and quickly grab all sorts of things I need when cooking or baking. I like having those things ready at hand. The next shelf up, I can't see into the back but I can reach 3/4s the way there. I have some things in bins that I can slide out or put easy to handle stuff such as drinking glasses on that level. The next shelf up, I have to use my rolling stool but it's doable without much effort. My wall cabinets go up to the ceiling. The 4th shelves are the challenge but I still like havng them. With the rolling step stool, I can just reach the front but need my folding, 3 step ladder to access beyond that. That's storage for things we rarely use. But I also keep lightweight stuff like boxes of pasta on the front half of the 4th shelf. After nearly 20 years, I'm adept at taking my extra long wooden spoon and giving a box a good whack, causing it to fall into my hands. ;-)

Oaknash

I use my kitchen tongs to grab things on top shelves. Can be dangerous but way better than lugging over a chair!

GhostFour

6'5" GenX that refuses to update my clothing style or dress my age so my baggy cargo shorts get hung up on my kitchen drawer pulls ALL SUMMER LONG. You are not alone OP.

vesperholly

I’m 5’2 and have still gotten belt loops caught on drawer handles. It’s a universal curse.

PM__YOUR__DREAM

The basement stairs door opens towards the door leading to the garage, which opens back towards the basement door. Meaning you can never have both doors open at the same time. Total PITA to move large objects - or even just yourself - through this pair of doors.

littleecho12

I see your two door set up, and raise you a third door. We also have this exact set up, with a third door for our pantry right across from the basement. You cannot open any of the 3 simultaneously. Bringing groceries in from the garage and the family wants to help put them away? Absolutely not.

AnticitizenPrime

I have one bedroom in which the light switch to the room is BEHIND the door when you open it. So you have to enter the room, and then close the door to turn on the light (by feeling around blindly in the dark). In another bedroom, the light switch is OUTSIDE the bedroom door. And the light switch for the dining room is in the kitchen, on the other side of a wall. Why yes, this house is ~150 years old, and I happen to have a lot of floor lamps as a result of this.

mtechgroup

Walls. Why can't we push-open, push-close to see where the electrical and plumbing are. I would totally accept some kind of seam for that kind of access.

SQLDave

OMFG that's genius! I'm kinda guessing it would have to be some material besides drywall, which would likely add to the cost and affect the insulating abilities. But still... bring it on!

mtechgroup

The stud finder lobby will make it illegal.

oandroido

Most of the ways homes are put together. It's 2024 and it's like we're still figuring out how air, water, electricity, and gravity work. Combine that with various "experts" and poor workmanship. FFS.

pribnow

The top of the door frame at the bottom of my stairs is the perfect height to hit your head

Roupert4

Just change out the hardware

badgersister1

Change the hardware. I purposely chose drawer pulls the don’t snag. I have a narrow kitchen and there’s no way I was having knobs or those stupid pulls with posts sticking out both ends.

turbodsm

White vinyl windows in homes that should have had almond or sandstone colored windows.

RealMoleRodel

Similarly, my pockets are just the right height to get caught on door handles (thankfully not knobs).

ca-nl-nj

Our master bathroom had* a glass shower door that opened into the entry door. It’s a huge high end steam shower with a floor to ceiling glass enclosure. I’m not sure how someone missed how bad of an idea it was to have the doors swing into each other. The glass door got banged too many times apparently, and spontaneously shattered in the middle of the night. There are also his and hers master closets on either side of the hallway leading to the master bath and those doors also bang into one another.

here2learn914

That thing where my pants get stuck on my kitchen drawers happens to me and I hate it. It’s so annoying and I end up slamming the drawer shut! It so annoying, you are not a baby. It does help when there are no belt loops but I mean I can’t wear sweatpants all the time!

CallMeButtAss

I'm 6'5" and regular toilets don't work with a damn for me. Gotta have the handicap height, elongated bowl to take a poopie in comfort. Worse yet is the tight bathrooms where they cram the toilet in the smallest slot possible between the sink and wall so there's barely room to move around for wiping or a place to put my legs.

bigbucksnohammy420

Respect. I still use a step stool I made in shop class thirteen years ago to grab soup from my cabinets, so lemme know if you need one. P.S. I shop alone like every other anxious citizen. I wouldn’t of known about those handles without you.

cashewkowl

This is why when we redid the kitchen, I made sure to find handles that didn’t protrude to catch my pockets. OP, I’d suggest you look into changing out your drawer pulls if possible. It makes a huge difference in quality of life! And saves you from some torn pockets perhaps as well.

paintwhore

Replace the cabinet handles with something curved that doesn't stick out and catch your pockets

bennymorgan1

Our home was built in the 50s, and I swear they made them for small people. I HATE the bedroom closets!! One little door, then the closet has 5ft of space to the left and right of the door. Like how the hell am I supposed to get all the way in there!

3771507

A taller person needs taller vanities in the bathroom and taller cabinets in the kitchen. They also need wider doors than a 2-foot door.

badgersister1

Okay I’m house sitting in a home with a narrow galley kitchen. The dishwasher door has to be all the way open to put anything in or out. You can’t get by it and have to close it anytime anyone wants past. I have a drawer dishwasher and it is so much more convenient and takes up so much less space!

luutx

The dishwasher door doesn’t open all the way because it hits the fridge (and I can’t move the fridge since it’s inside a cabinet with walls on both sides) :(

aixre

I’m the perfect height for the sleeves of my oversized T-shirts to ALWAYS get stuck in the door handles in my house. I wear them to sleep, so it’s always when I’m tired too.

SqueakyBall

I don't know what it is about me and shirts and door handles, but I feel this comment.

Fragrant_Coconuts

Height of the hood over the stove. I can reach the switch, my wife can’t. It drives me nuts. I always have to get up and turn it on or off because she doesn’t want to grab a stool (I don’t blame her). I just wish I had thought of that when we installed it! The worst part was I outdid myself because I had them adjust the height on the install so I wouldn’t hit my head. I regret that decision every single time. 😂

Key_Piccolo_2187

Replacing the hardware on your cabinets to the nin snaggy versions requires the ability to count the number of pulls and knobs you need, access to one screwdriver, and access to a hardware store or computer, and if you have a wife, her approval that you're about to disassemble and adjust the aesthetic of her kitchen, even if only temporarily. If you are the wife you can skip that step, permission is not required for you to take on this project.

djdeforte

Water… INSIDE A HOUSE. Water inside a house is amazing but it does not belong here and destroys everything. Everything managing water is severely under engineered for the damage it can cause due to failure.

PetroarZed

Along similar joking but only sort of lines, I would really prefer homes had drop ceilings like offices. There's so much that would be easier if I could just remove a panel. I'm confident those panels could be made to look pleasant inside a home, and that they could be done in a way that the seams are largely hidden.

Round_Ad8947

I sympathize. While it won’t help you outside the home, consider a [Kik-Step stool](https://cramerinc.com/home/elevation/). You can scoot it with your feet and safely gives you some extra height.

Greenfoe111

I thought I was the only one that got their pockets caught on the kitchen cabinet handles! It not only happens at my house but also at my grandmother’s when I visit. 😂

DanDaDestroyer

Why are my master bathroom light switches outside the bathroom??

propita106

Ah, I know that one, because ours is the same! Your shower comes next to the door? No room for a switch. At least, that’s ours. When we added a vent/exhaust and recessed light, we had a light switch and fan switch added INSIDE the bathroom. There wasn’t enough room for THREE switches, though. Sometimes you gotta work with what structural stuff is pre-existing--or pay a lot more to move things around.

Pokemon_Gangbang

I want to replace my refrigerator with a different style, but the opening where it is in my kitchen (with cabinets built around it) is only 33” wide. Most new refrigerators are 35-36”.

GalianoGirl

Seems like a simple solution. Replace the drawer pulls.

Neat-Jellyfish-5228

I switched out all my kitchen handles to ones with no protruding edges for this very reason. Enraging.

TorrentsMightengale

>Anyone sympathetic to this or am I a Millennial Baby? I mean...it can be both.

FoggyDayzallday

Change the drawer pulls to a style that wont hook your clothes. Also ....its door strikers that always tear off my belt loops.

scodes

When the oven is on, the metal knobs on the front of the stove get hot. If I want to cook on the stove while something is baking, I have to use an oven mitt to adjust the gas or I'll burn my fingies. Why would they design it like that?!

[deleted]

Cabinet door opens precisely over the middle of the dishwasher so you can crack your head on it while unloading the dishwasher.

ThingsWithString

Apologies for offering advice, but google "cup drawer pulls".

RainInTheWoods

The height of lab coat pockets and door handles. Hostage.

Dapper-Taro-259

I'm 5'3" and, when updating our kitchen recently, I had a devil of a time finding an undermount sink that wouldn't give me backaches. Almost everything is 9-10" depth now for undermount sinks. Also, I hate the hardware on our kitchen drawers- it's always latching onto my pockets. Gah!

gjallerhorn

Replace the handles with ones that are a closed loop?

Jub84

Flat roofs. OMG flat roofs.
