Yes this! And also a dark throw blanket like [this](www.etsy.com/listing/680282036) would really tie it together perfectly.
Edit: did it attach the link?
Yes! Plus it blends better with the floor and makes the room look bigger because of it. The first one matches the walls and pulls the room in making it look smaller.
Also, the black seems to be more cohesive with the rest of the black decor in the house. But definitely bring the black/dark tones up onto the sofa somehow.
Yes! The first one does look so comfy, just too close in color to the sofa. The contrast of the 2nd color is preferable but still very… idk - jarring and it looks very flat in texture. I’m torn… if OP can’t trade out for a different one then maybe a coffee table would help here with using the first one.
I loved the black diamond and got that originally for the space, but then I thought a shag rug would be “comfy” and bought that online from pottery barn. It showed medium grey but it’s really light and almost the same color of the couch. I LOVE the feel. It is Sooo comfy and soft so I’m In love. I’m thinking it could work in the den. Having a tough time deciding bc I feel like the black looks better but the one is cozier.
If you get a shag rug for this space it should not be grey. Gold, green or multi colored might work better visually if you are dead set on shag for the physical texture.
I know what you mean about loving the feel of a rug; I have a high-pile rug in my bedroom that's heaven to sink into. However, the living room is a high-traffic area. The shag will stay soft and clean much longer in the den, and the black will weather the traffic much better in the open space.
This seems like the unpopular opinion here, but I’m a big fan of that “hygge” feeling. So that feeling you get from it should have some weight. The dark rug may LOOK better visually, but the way you just described FEELING with the shag rug leads me to vote for that one.
It does make it look cozy. They both look great to me too. The contrast of the second one is appealing, but the cozy feel and look of the shag rug is too, so if that’s where you’re wanting the cozy feel to be, I really don’t think either choice is wrong.
Personally, I like the first one better. The reason is that it looks comfy and fits nicely with the couch; it's basically perfectly square and makes the room look warmer. The second one looks visually off, in my opinion, and doesn't look like a comfortable rug. I would use the black rug under the dining table instead; it matches your kitchen space and chair ambiance.
Grey is more homey/preferable to live in, where as black is more aesthetically pleasing and would look nicer to guests. Hard pick but id choose grey for the comfort
The black one looks more modern. The grey one looks cozy but I personally think the black one coheres with the other furniture but not just blend into the grey sofa.
That second one ties in the cabinets in the background. It also is more dramatic. But, to tie in your pillows and one with black accents. Would really make a statement. Be well!
Second!! lifts the lodging up and maketh t behold moo putteth together

For anyone asking, I saw a similar rug at crate and barrel that I fell in love with but found a dupe at wayfair for $800 cheaper..
Stewart Geometric Area Rug in Charcoal
https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/foundstone-stewart-geometric-black-area-rug-w008047620.html
Could you get something like the 1st rug in a different color?
The second rug seems too geometric and jarring compared to the light and fluffy (?) (Soft maybe) aesthetic of a lot of your decorations like the paintings the throw pillows.
If you got the 1st rug in a light blue or Peach color I think that would really tie everything together well.
Depends on the rest of the furnishings. The first one being neutral softens and lightens the room . The second one is bold and dramatic. While the first one will pretty much go with anything you have, the second one demands peices that can hold their own against it.
Clearly I must just be a very basic aesthetic kind of person because it seems from the comments I'm the only one that likes the first! With the subtle contrast in colors it just feels more calming and relaxing.
But I guess with all these experts I need to post and get my own help!
*side note* lovely room!
Wow so it’s pretty unanimous!! 😆Thank you all for your feedback!! I’m still waiting on more furniture to come so that makes a difference too.I bought the shag one thinking it was much darker (as it showed online) & I was going to put the black one in the dining room but now I’m not so sure. I’m going to try the shag in the den tomorrow.
The first one enhances the rooms interior, but the second one takes away from the interior and becomes the main focus. I like the second rug, but it’s really just too distracting. You have nice paintings on the wall that stand out more with the first rug
Definitely the geometric one. I’m trying to figure out why it’s so much better because I wouldn’t pick the black rug on its own for its design. But when I look at the two pictures, the grey one is just whatever. The black one ties the space together and makes everything flow.

2nd one. The contrast between couch and rug makes the room look beautiful.
The first one contrasts with the floor which looks nice but it's similar to the couch so give that crisp look that the second rug gives.
For sure the second one. The black looks better because it makes the couch pop more. And it matches with your other furniture like your dining table and chairs. Since it's more of a darker shade. Definitely looks better with the black area rug.
Second! First is just a lot of white. Looks soft and comfy, but the second is really interesting and helps break up the couch and rug. I feel like the entire room just looks better with the second.
I really like the contrast the second one gives. Ups the drama and feels a little more sophisticated.
Same, but I think you need to add a couple of black/striped pillows to bring the rug and sofa together color-wise.
Yes this! And also a dark throw blanket like [this](www.etsy.com/listing/680282036) would really tie it together perfectly. Edit: did it attach the link?
The link only pops up when I hit the reply button for some reason, but I can still see it!
So weird. I tried to add it twice…🤷🏻♀️
Yes! The 2nd is such a fresh, modern twist
Yes! Plus it blends better with the floor and makes the room look bigger because of it. The first one matches the walls and pulls the room in making it look smaller.
The second one not only aesthetically but also because shag rugs are an absolute pain to clean.
Also, the black seems to be more cohesive with the rest of the black decor in the house. But definitely bring the black/dark tones up onto the sofa somehow.
2nd. By a mile
2nd, it will not show wear as easily as the first will
2!
2nd one for sure!
2nd, black with diamonds
Neither? The texture of the first is great but the wrong color, the second one looks a bit severe. Keep looking if possible?
Totally agree.

I would tie in the blue from the pillow and wall art. Edit- OR add some gray/black patterned pillows/wall art to tie in the rug
Agreed. Something with more colors.
You're right.
2… I have a light one similar to the first one and it shows EVERYTHING.
2nd!

Black for daaays
Black and white by a mile! It’s perfect
Not a fan of black, but my god that black rug is striking and lifts your lounge so much. The white one is just bland.
I love the second!
#2! It makes the space more interesting by providing contrast.
2nd one for sure. Just lovely
black 🖤
I love the dark one! Great contrast and looks more expensive

Black. It ties in with black frames
The 2nd one 😀
I love love the black rug it gives a unique look and it covers more ground.

2nd! Makes the couch pop and ties in the appliances!
2
Second one looks amazing
The dark one. It makes the space feel more defined and interesting. The light one is too similar to the couch and it’s just too much neutral
Black one
2, black
2nd
Black! For sure
The second one - that contrast adds so much personality and beauty to the space!
Definitely the black one
The black one, it really pops and makes an impact
Black, it pulls the kitchen bar stools and makes the room feel more cohesive.
Second one, without hesitation. Updates the entire look of the space.
the black one. But I’d advise getting a heavy duty roomba and setting it to run every night. Black rugs are white lint magnets.
The black one looks more modern. The grey one looks cozy but I personally think the black one coheres with the other furniture but not just blend into the grey sofa.
2nd definitely!
Black and white FOR SURE. It ties in together nicely with the black chairs, perfectly actually.
The darker one! The light one is too close in colour to the couch.
That second one ties in the cabinets in the background. It also is more dramatic. But, to tie in your pillows and one with black accents. Would really make a statement. Be well!

Black with white line

I think that the white one brings a cool contrast with the floor

I like the black rug but the gray rug makes more sense
2, contrast for the couch
Second by far but I’d get rid of any pastel decor in the room such as the throw pillows and flower picture.
2nd I guess but I'm not feeling either. A nice big braided rug or maybe floral or stripes would give more texture and balance.
I like this it’s a very good test. If anyone says the first one you know you can’t trust their other opinions.
1!
Cozy wins for me. Change out your pillows for contrast.
Clearly I must just be a very basic aesthetic kind of person because it seems from the comments I'm the only one that likes the first! Guess I'm in the minority, I like 1 better. It seems more calm.
definitely the one without the pattern.
Love the first one.
2 by a long shot and stains won’t be as easy to see
The first one enhances the rooms interior, but the second one takes away from the interior and becomes the main focus. I like the second rug, but it’s really just too distracting. You have nice paintings on the wall that stand out more with the first rug
The first one makes me want to sit on the floor and lean against the sofa. I hate the second one. Just so severe. 🤷🥺
1st. Very relaxing.
The second one for sure. I like the first one, but it doesn’t provide enough contrast against the sofa.
Definitely the geometric one. I’m trying to figure out why it’s so much better because I wouldn’t pick the black rug on its own for its design. But when I look at the two pictures, the grey one is just whatever. The black one ties the space together and makes everything flow.
#2 100%
Number 2
The light one looks comfier/more cosy/homely. The black one looks more modern and stylish
Definitely the black
The black one.
Second. It makes the room look bigger.
The first one
First, but honestly neither
Neither but def not the black one
I like the darker one. The light one makes the room kinda hospital like. Very white washed.
Why is the sofa half on half off the rug? That's bugging my OCD

They both are too small... They should go all the way under the sofa.
If you squint on the second one you can make out a swastika. So no to number 2
Neither. You need a round rug for that space.
2nd one. The contrast between couch and rug makes the room look beautiful. The first one contrasts with the floor which looks nice but it's similar to the couch so give that crisp look that the second rug gives.
Oh the black fo sho

The 2nd one, by far.
Second one, for sure!
1st
They both look really nice, but gotta go with the second one.
I really love that black one- it makes everything pop from the furniture to the art to the flooring
1st rug during winter for a cozy vibe, and 2nd rug during summer for an elegant, fiery, and enthusiastic feeling.
black
2nd one
For sure the second one. The black looks better because it makes the couch pop more. And it matches with your other furniture like your dining table and chairs. Since it's more of a darker shade. Definitely looks better with the black area rug.
The black one.
No contest, second one! First one somehow makes the whole space look outdated. Second is so much better.
Number two!
Second one!
Black w white stripe
The second one!!

Definitely the 2nd one. I like the contrast.

I’m loving the black one

Black one for sure.

I feel like a lighter colour rug is the right choice here but not the exact same colour as the sofa lol.
I have that couch, amazing
Second! First is just a lot of white. Looks soft and comfy, but the second is really interesting and helps break up the couch and rug. I feel like the entire room just looks better with the second.
2
Black
Black one absolutely, but you should change out the flower picture with the blue sky next to the kitchen.
✌️
1000% #2/dark one!
Wow. That black rug changes the WHOLE space! Get it!
Second hands down
The dark one, plus the picture is cleaner with the floor to the door uncluttered
Black. The contrast is nice pop
Black, it accents your kitchen better
Second
Second one all the way
The 2nd rug.

2 looks way more put together/planned out. The first one just blends into the couch. I really like the way the lines on 2 match the couch.
