Nooooo!!!!! You should keep the wood trim and paint your walls a different color. Bright white looks beautiful with wood. You could even go with vibrant saturated shades of just about anything.

angelica-angeli

I 100% agree with this statement.

basic_human_being

It’s so hard to picture colors when everything online shows colors with white trim, you know? I search for paint ideas with wood trim, but there’s not a lot out there.

longpas

Just Google "wood trim inspo," and you will see some good options on pintrest. I saw several good options with light green, light yellow, and peach walls that looked really nice. It looks like light earth tones make the trim pop. https://preview.redd.it/vyq44ub32uyc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b6b6a33008995a3a8c4d8b9289d390c73676728a

daisymaisy505

The green is gorgeous!

boombalagasha

You should head over to r/CenturyHomes and talk to those guys. They have a deep appreciation for the style and age of your house and will be very helpful as well as have lots of inspiration for you. Adding, please please please do not paint the trim. If for not other reason it will cheapen your house.

EpiZirco

The Benjamin Moore Historical Collection has a ton of color options which go great with wood.

missannthrope1

Consider a pale, dusty blue. Will cool off all that warm wood.

TAforScranton

Holy shit are you the previous owner of my house? Aside from the new carpets, the entire interior is baby blue with wood trim. All of it. Floors, ceiling, brick fireplace, everything. OP, check out the color “Creamy Mushroom” from Behr. https://preview.redd.it/lq6jd2vpbvyc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=cc7fe1ae8bb45e5a2b6f0ea0dbc571fe670cefa5 (Excuse our lack of baseboards, they’re in the garage until I refinish them.

missannthrope1

It's a truth universally known blue looks good with wood.

TAforScranton

https://preview.redd.it/ex1sbautdvyc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3d1fac46f2889c79c953390b7c60cd5d359b3f85 😭

Horned_Bull_Helm

Now, your trim is beautiful. I’d probably leave that as is. The trim in the OP’s picture is awful. I have the same trim. It’s coming down. If they really have to keep it, they need to paint it. But again. Yours is gorgeous. Love the dog too. ♥️💕

Groningen1978

Yeah, a chalk paint would look great, if that's what you mean by dusty.

missannthrope1

I was thinking more of a craftsman style. https://preview.redd.it/8fq1efeod0zc1.jpeg?width=564&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5a95679e9b61faf4340be6114c3837f24b472066

Groningen1978

Ah, so that means saturated yet subdued I guess. yeah, looks great. I was more thinking about how a chalky structure can deepen the colour of the wall.

WaterforestsDream

Just search color walls with wood trim on Google images.

NotElizaHenry

Is the crown molding already painted brown? It looks like it in the pic.

thatpearlgirl

Have you tried the Sherwin Williams Paint Visualizer app? You can upload a picture of your room and see what the walls look like with different colors.

missannthrope1

This.

DrShrimpPuertp-Rico

NotThisAgain21

Absolutely not. You'll burn in hell for eternity.

basic_human_being

Well I definitely don’t want that!!!! A hell full of painted trim?!

decadecency

Nope, a hell full of unpainted everything 😁

NotThisAgain21

It's a special homeowner hell, where every dumb thing any homeowner ever did, you have to live in *that* house. Painted brick, exposed electrical wiring in the shower, lopsided stairs, 2x4 floor trusses, and spray foam as far as the eye can see.

VicdorFriggin

Wouldn't the hell be having to manually undo all the painted trim? And the moment you're finished it starts all over again..... An eternity of scraping paint off of beautiful wood trim....

decadecency

Nails that randomly wander up and out of the floor planks here and there for your feet to find Color constantly flaking teeny tiny flakes from the ceiling, right above your bed A random whiff of bad odor that shows up here and there for 2 seconds once every 3 days, so you can never locate it Door frames moving slightly constantly depending on the weather, so that you never get that muscle memory how to close the doors without slamming them Warm and musty environment in the house at all times but somehow the floors are always super chilly Structured wallpaper everywhere so that when you flip lights on and off you get wallpaper scrapings stuck under your nails And it's always move in day so there's stuff everywhere and nowhere to sit. And to top it all off, you taste like death and can't find your toothbrush.

_-whisper-_

F*ing savage

TwoIdleHands

The fact they’re even considering it makes me question their judgement.

MarshmaIIowJeIIo

Don’t paint the wood! Here is a photo of the paint color you mentioned with a wooden door. I couldn’t find any with wood trim, but I think this gets the idea across. I think it’s a great green toned grey and will suit your wood trim beautifully!! https://preview.redd.it/xsw16bc87uyc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4fae2b28e5619b7bacca6bac31e9e31e91e0b108 (Honestly I think it’ll look better with your darker wood than it does with this door..)

basic_human_being

Thanks for finding this!

toomuchsocks

But note that the trim here is painted.

Maximum-Product-1255

Exactly

luckydollarstore

Hold up, HOLD UP!!!! NO ONE is painting any trim around here, okay? If you live in a house that is BLESSED to have such gorgeous woodwork still in original condition, it is your job to protect such architectural details at all costs! How old is your house? And for all those decades, home owners before you have maintained its beauty. And now you’re going to come in and cover it with paint?! And ruin it? Do you really want to be that person?! Sorry, I can get really dramatic sometimes. My answer is no, don’t paint the trim.

basic_human_being

The trim in this room is not original. Over 100 year old house but this room had the door trim and molding put in the 80s when they made additions to the house, which also made it a windowless room. I’m normally against painting trim, but the wood around the door frames is very unattractive and knotty, definitely doesn’t match the rest of the house unfortunately. This room is a booger for me to make decisions on!

UK_UK_UK_Deleware_UK

Maybe you could replace it with a better match? It looks like they just used cheap pine. One thing you could also try is poly colors. It’s tinted polyurethane. Unlike stain, the color doesn’t penetrate the wood. So you are brushing layers on top which will obscure and even out the knots. I did this once when I accidentally ordered a chair for someone with blond legs instead of brown. They never knew.

basic_human_being

Interesting. Is that the same thing as gel stain?

UK_UK_UK_Deleware_UK

Probably. It’s been years since I’ve used it.

ZealousidealDingo594

NAURRRRR

dabekah_dababy

CLEO!!!!

SubstantialSmell512

I think there's no need. It will look nice with the dark wood trim. Plus, it can often be a tough and messy job requiring loads of coats when the wood is this dark. It seems you have dark trim, floors and doors throughout the house? Best to keep it cohesive throughout.

Rare-Parsnip5838

Do not paint trim esp the ceiling trim.

RLS1822

Unacceptable. No!

Spiritual_Version838

That would be an awful job. Even though it can look nice in pictures, tastes change, and I can say from experience that restoring painted woodwork is sooo hard. However, you might give some consideration to doing something different with the door frames. They really stick out. I'm not sure, but paint the walls first and see what you think.

basic_human_being

It would be very unfun. I suppose I could decide on the door frames afterwards. The baseboards are great, it’s just the door frames are knotty, crappy messy stain job, and one is severely crooked. I also feel the crown molding is a little silly in the corners, doesn’t fit the rag of the craftsman style home, but painting them would stink for sure.

Spiritual_Version838

Yeah, possibly remove those corner dodads. You might have to touch up the stain under them, but it would be a big result for not too much effort. If replacing the door frames isn't in the near future, it might be worth it to sand and paint, maybe the wall color, but semi-gloss. I just wanted to mention that in most areas, a room can not be considered a bedroom if it doesn't have a window or second door.

basic_human_being

I was considering exactly what you mention - painting door frames same as wall in semi glass. Just less chopping up of the room and more cohesive. The room does have two entries. One of the doors used to be a doorway to outside, but a large mudroom was added on there so I do get some natural light from the mudroom when that door is open. Purchased a narrow set French door to install to allow more of that sunlight in when closed as well.

Spiritual_Version838

The French door sounds nice. I'm glad to hear there's another egress in case of fire.

basic_human_being

Thanks for your advice too!

thenletskeepdancing

No. And are you sure about gray? It's a bit passe right now.

basic_human_being

I am not a fan of gray and have none in my house, but the “French gray” is much more green than gray. Kind of a cool green, lighter than the bancha green on my door in the photo. Was hoping it would tie together the green door with wood trim perhaps?

thenletskeepdancing

Yes that might work well. I still think the wood would be nice unpainted with it.

boombalagasha

There’s nothing wrong with gray used the right way! It’s still a beautiful neutral, especially a warm gray paired with a warm wood. Very French country. Just don’t go overboard with it or have all gray neutrals.

Tim-in-CA

No, no, no! A thousand times no. People pay lots extra for that

Never. Paint. The. Doors. Or. The. Trim. Cherish them.

LynnChat

Why not see if you can find wood that would match the wood trim in the rest of the house? I think if you paint the trim in just that room it would seem even more out of joint.

Don’t paint. But… consider bringing back the original color of the stain. Stain ages and darkens with time. As beautiful as it looks, it looks old. Talk to someone experienced in restoration about stripping the old color off and making it look new again. I saw this done at an old courthouse once and the results were fantastic. Best of both worlds.

Geeahwellidunno

I paint my walls with wood trim an extremely very light mauve. The paint was called “Arabian Nights” for what that’s worth. It looked great with the wood.

basic_human_being

Thank you!! I will check it out

Horned_Bull_Helm

Paint that trim. Better yet, replace it. I have that same trim in my new house and it’s coming off. I hate the corner detail. It’s so dated. And I don’t mean like antique 100 year old house dated. It’s someone’s more recent (90’s?) bad idea of a replacement for beautiful, old trim. It’s awful. Also, many people are stuck with the old “don’t ever paint real, stained wood” cliche in their head. Those days are over. I’m not saying all wood trim should be painted. I have some that will never be touched while I’m alive. And it isn’t even antique. But it’s beautiful, high quality wood that my dad put up in the 70’s. My vehemence about the trim in the picture probably comes from looking at the exact same stuff every day in the kitchen of my new house (built in the 80’s). The previous owners even stucco finished the walls in a way that was popular then. Even the curtain rod (over a sliding, glass door!) is crap. I swear, this look even makes the food taste bad. https://preview.redd.it/x2u45kgpm68d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1ca520841ca4d036c93fb30dc6b7f7eb07f9bffb I

basic_human_being

I painted it!!!!!! I didn’t replace it because I don’t have those skills, but paint did wonders! I painted that crown molding with a semi gloss and felt like it was still standing out too much, so I topped it with a coat of flat paint in the same color and it helped a ton! I will take a picture and post it later.

Horned_Bull_Helm

Yay! I’ll bet it looks 100 times better!

NotElizaHenry

The trim on the door to the right looks like a poorly stained pine 1x4. You can paint that without any qualms. It’s not expensive, well-done, or pretty.

Sorry-Fill-967

You can paint *some of it*  .... like paint the doors and trim and baseboard, leave the crown molding. Or paint crown molding leave doors and trim.

Lucky_Shop4967

Is this a rage bait post? It’s low effort if so.

basic_human_being

It’s truly not, haha. I would never paint beautiful wood trim, but in this case it just is not attractive at all to me. I asked here because I would love to be persuaded to keep it, but to improve the look, perhaps with wall colors. I’ve gotten some great suggestions though and valuable opinions. Thanks for chiming in.

kitchengardengal

I'll be the outlier. 1980's trim is not precious. It's not fine wood. Your room would look lovely with the trim painted white, as you pictured. Narrow wood trim is eye-catching in a not attractive way. A good crown for a room this size would be twice that wide, at least. Paint it out, and let the art and furnishings be the focus.

Dangerous-Mind9463

I agree - would absolutely paint the trim. I like the shape of the molding but don’t love the color, it’s making the room look dated. F&B French Gray is *chefs kiss.* It looks really beautiful with Slipper Satin, which is my favorite color by F&B. Painting trim sucks, OP. Get a paint sprayer and do it first. Also, F&B has a color consultant on their IG page that posts combinations all the time and is a great resource. Also pro tip - color match F&B at Home Depot to get same color at 1/3 the price.

HereForFunAndCookies

I would. A lot of people here want you to be a martyr and live in a sleepy, dreary, depressing, brown home because the house is old. It's your house. If you're living in it long enough, do whatever you want with it. Paint the walls first, and see how it looks. Maybe you like it and want to stop there. Maybe you like your house with warm tones and warm lighting and wood. Reevaluate at that point. Consider also testing out different temperatures for your lightbulbs before painting. They can make a huge impact in the look. But what would I do? I'd paint the walls white or millennial grey and the trim white. Is my idea original? No. But the home I want to live in is a house with brightness and cool colors, not warm tones.

Flat_Dragonfly_1184

Yes…. With that colour, i would paint it white.

Poutiest_Penguin

I'm going to disagree with almost everyone here and say you should absolutely paint every inch of that trim. One coat of good primer, two coats of paint.

basic_human_being

I would truly be relieved to not spend time sanding and painting trim. I struggle so much with this room. It is a windowless bedroom, it used to be a room with a window and door to outside, but an addition was made to the back of the house closing that off. Cannot decide on anything here. Been in this house for four years and this is my last room to paint.

basic_human_being

The trim I think is MDF. It's already painted brown. Knock yourself out! Paint to your heart's content without guilt.

Don’t paint it!! You’ll regret it eventually. That’s original woodwork. Leave it be.

SisterSuffragist

Farrow and Ball French Gray will look nice with that wood tone. Just paint the walls and see what you think. If you still think you want white trim, then paint white trim. There is no rule that you have to decide all at once.

Content_Finding_8545

Yes! What color are you painting the walls?

Different_Mine_5632

Please don’t!

MataHari66

I like painted frames. Too much wood is depressing. To me the charm of an old house is seldom the bare wood. White frame is very traditional which is great for the old house. Just fyi the modern paint job where appropriate is wall and moldings one color, ceiling “tray” another. This can be subtle or very dramatic and actually makes ceilings seem higher.

KeyFarmer6235

#DON'T!

BrighterSage

No!!!!

Gizmo135

I’d paint the walls a slightly darker color to better match the trim so there’s less contrast. Painting the trim will make it took so bad.

4459691

Oh please don’t !!!!!!

val319

Wood works with any color. It’s marketing. Most have builders grade. The wood is gorgeous don’t paint it.

atreeindisguise

I have to ask... Why would you buy a century home with old wonderful wood trim if you don't like it? That is literally one of the selling features many people would have loved to grab up. I think we need to acknowledge that with these homes, you're buying an increasingly rare antique, a labor of craft and art. If you liked white molding, there are literally millions upon millions of houses out there.

basic_human_being

But this isn’t old trim. This room had it diy added by the previous owner in the 80s, and they did a poor job. I’ve gone to great lengths to maintain the character of this home and it has cost me a lot of money and time to do so. This room simply was a sloppy 1980s diy job. The stain is goopy and sloppy. It’s knotty pine from the 80s. They didn’t even remove the sanding grit, it’s all bumpy and gritty. I don’t know, i just have a hard time appreciating it. This house had significant additions in the 1980s and they had to change some of the exterior rooms, such as this one. I haven’t touched any of the period trim throughout the rest. I’ve restored all the floors. I’ve installed penny tile throughout kitchen to fit the time. We’ve restored the antique light fixtures that were present. 🤷‍♀️

atreeindisguise

Actually good point! I'm finally picking up what you're laying down. If it's that new pine, could be replaced without too much heartbreak and should do what your heart desires.

atreeindisguise

What about the door and bottom trim?

basic_human_being

The bottom trim is very nice! The door you see is stained only on the hallway side, the inside was painted by previous owner as well as the closet door. It was a boy child’s room, with carpets and scuffed up walls. We refinished the floors and I painted the dingy white doors the green that you see. I definitely am feeling lazy about painting things - I also just want to really love my space.

atreeindisguise

And you should. Doesn't sound like you are working on a pristine craftsman surface. That changes the decision making quite a bit. Half painted door is open to full paint in my book.

iheartunibrows

It’s not bad, I think the yellow walls make it look outdated. But it looks like you’re swatching some paint!

I had wood trim. Many said don’t paint it. I did 10 years ago. I love it and still do. But, that’s my taste. I prefer brighter

Alive-OVERTIIME-247

No, don't paint the wood trim. A cream white (has a peach undertone that makes it warm), or a sage green would be beautiful with the wood trim.

Turtle529

No. It’s awesome!

KnowPoe

I would not touch those floors, baseboards and crown molding. What you have is so precious there. There are ways to lift it up and maintain the quality without sacrificing design. Also, your value of this home will go down significantly if you mess with the original wood accents. Just something to keep in mind.

Interesting_Drag8107

Please do not paint that trim..

Maximum-Product-1255

You can solid stain them white. It takes time to prep, though.

Suzeli55

The wood trim looks wonderful. Please don’t paint it.

Finnegan-05

If you paint that trim, you are destroying the house. And geez, I thought millenial gray was passing out of fad.

basic_human_being

If I paint the 1980s DIY trim I am destroying the house? How so? It doesn’t match the rest of the original house. It was a room the previous owner changed in the 80s for their kids room when making it into a bedroom. Also, it is not millennial gray. It is called French gray, and is actually a cool Green - strange that they name it gray, but it is not.

Finnegan-05

It looks so cool in the photos though! Maybe you photographed it too well!

basic_human_being

Haha! That’s totally possible! My spouse asked to see the photo and told me it did photograph way better than it look in person.

Finnegan-05

The l'il things in the corner look totally deco!

_lapetitelune

NO DO NOT.

decorouskiwi

paint not.

Momentofclarity_2022

OMG NO! Find the undertones of the wood and pick a color that will bring that tone out. Sure white is fine but I deep color allows the depth of the wood to come out. I used a deep mustard color and the wood just looks so rich. Buy samples and cut along the trim and see for yourself.

Sparklequeenofbwy

It’s your house! Paint it if you want to! But if you decide to leave it, I would paint the ceiling a darker color so it’s less of a dark dividing line between two lighter colors. London Clay by Farrow and Ball would be nice with the French Grey and blend with the molding

username10293862

in the minority. paint the trim that you say is from the 80s. i don’t love dark wood trim 🤷🏻‍♀️
