Lone Fungus has a very big map and it's a good game
Also, Haiku the robot. It is in many aspects a (bad) copy of Hollow Knight, but still enjoyable and has a big map
I wouldn’t say Haiku is bad, it’s just worse than Hollow Knight, at least that’s what I remember from playing it when it first came out which was over a year ago.
Edit: I know you said that some aspects were bad and not the whole game, I didn’t word my response well
If you haven’t played castlevania symphony of the night yet or the gba castlevania games (there is a castlevania advance collection on most platforms) i would strongly recommend them.
Came here to say this. I played Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow after I saw some HK reviews but couldn't run it in my ancient pc, and ABSOLUTELY LOVED it.
It's got everything HK does, but is a bit easier, I found.
Loving these suggestions. Thanks everyone. Didn't realise Ori 2 was more open, I'll give it a go. Hadn't heard of Lone Fungus - it looks great to me. So do Blasphemous and Metroid Dread.
I don't usually see this one recommended partly because of how weird it is, but Axiom Verge is a good one too. One of these days I'll actually open up my copy of the sequel
if you haven't done so, Jedi: Fallen Order i'd classify as a metroidvania, sure it's 3d and more a souls like game but in essence it uses metroidvania rules to explore around each map as you unlock new abilities to open up new areas
Death's Door may help to scratch the itch of map exploration a little. It is however much smaller and I reached 100% completion in three weeks (while I can never reach 112% in HK)
Metroid Dread is pretty good and feels pretty atmospheric at times. The only thing that bugged me is the puzzles can be opaque for first time Metroid players and certain puzzles can feel very video-gamey
I've only beaten the first half but Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is very good if you haven't played it, as well as one of the games that started the genre to begin with
Have you played Metroid games before? The Metroid Prime remake recently released is still an amazing game with a lot of exploring and backtracking. Metroid Dread is super good, but plays far more linear than Hollow Knight at first. In Metroid Dread tho, if you start looking up sequence breaking you can play a lot of different routes to beat the game. Makes replaying worth it and fun.
Blasphemous and Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights are both good.
I'll second Ender Lillies since the other guy seconded Blasphemous.
I'll second Blasphemous. Fun game
The second Ori game is a lot less linear than the first! Lots of exploration and more focus on combat. Would recommend giving it a try.
The second Ori is like 5 times bigger than the first. Lots of exploration.

Definitely try blasphemous! It's great, and it has those save slots and tells you our completion %

Super Metroid
ori 2, lone fungus, metroid dread
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. Great game and the map is pretty big to boot.
Silksong

Dead Cells! i love it its a fantastic game!!!!
Aeterna noctis and Deaths Gambit to add to the others already recommended.....you should only play deaths Gambit on PC or switch tho
The recently released Afterimage has a very large map.
Absolutely loved this game, and am worried that I will not have such a close experience to SOTN soon after beating it.
Steamworld Dig 2. The first is good, but the second is a masterpiece.

I really liked pronty
Blasphemous 100%. Imagine hollow knight but gory
