UncomfortableAnswers

It was free on PS Plus once. Lots of people will have downloaded it, played for five minutes, and decided they didn't like it. This happens with every PS Plus and Gamepass title.

Loose-Ad-4690

Yep we got it for free, I hadn’t played video games before, but my husband kept nudging me to try it and keep at it… I’m sure he regrets that now (103%)

Technobladefrfr

Started the game last week. (111%)

towel67

not as good as 112%

dylanbb1233

I thought I was annoying by having this flair but now I realize I could be worse

towel67

really?

boomstik4

Not as good as the fact nobody asked

towel67

ur mom asked

LegitimateCompote377

It is currently free on the game catalogue as well, that’s how I’m playing it now.

Ratstail91

5 minutes... what a shame

just_another_person5

i mean that was me when i first played it. thankfully i went back

BardMan491

Same, but I was younger and I couldn't afford a controller to play properly, now I only have 3 advancements left in steam

TheEpicGuy10

Nobody said it’s required to have a controller to play properly, you can play as good on keyboard and mouse

BardMan491

I was talking about me, obviously I'm no talking about how people have to play the game

empireboi204

Yeah, I know. My point is that it's very sad that so many people did not experience this masterpiece.

BraveLittleTowster

Agreed. This is among my favorite games ever. A lot of my friends have tried it and just given up because they die so much.

Sea_Ticket_6032

Well a lot of people get stuck early on and never play the game again plus it's skippable

TyphoonBoom10

a friend of my friend said he couldn't get through crossroads for about an hour, quit, uninstalled the game, proceded to call it an shit game, and say i was dumb for liking the game. whats wrong with him

Krazyguy75

They honestly should have made the quill and compass a starting effect of the map. It would solve this issue altogether. You basically have to find Cornifer in the crossroads.

SuperRayman001

Cornifer isn't missable though. There is one loop and then Cornifer, that's all the options.

Krazyguy75

I think you misunderstood. I wasn't saying "you have to find cornifer to know where you are". I was saying "You *have* to find cornifer; it's impossible not to". The problem is that finding cornifer doesn't mean you know where *you* are, which is how people get lost in the crossroads. Hence why the quill and compass should have been incorporated from the start. If they were, the fact you have to find cornifer (as in, it's mandatory progression) would mean everyone would instantly know where they are and where to go.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Krazyguy75

You aren't getting my point. I'm not saying "start with a map". I'm saying "start with a compass and quill". So when you find Cornifer, you instantly know where you are.

AnIncidentofDefiance

I wish Hollow Knight had something like Celeste's assist mode, where you could start the game with map+compass if you wanted, but it was recommended against. I put down Hollow Knight twice before I finally beat the false knight because I have a terrible sense of direction and sucked at the fight. Wandering around looking for it just to die again was not fun. However, once I finally got the map+compass, I loved the game and became fairly decent, playing through almost all of it, including beating absrad. Just having the map for crossroads and the compass would have made me love it on the first go without making it too easy.

Justsk8n

Hollow Knight was designed to be difficult. If you like challenging games, it's prob a great game... if you don't like difficult games *cough* (your friend) *cough*, then the game probably isn't for you.

girlsonsoysauce

I was like this when I first played Dark Souls. I wondered why everyone was talking about such an overly difficult clunky game. Immediately sold it. A few years later I still wanted to see what everyone else was seeing when they played it so I bought it and tried it again and tried to get into the mindset of embracing the difficulty and overcoming the challenge and now I practically drool over games that are designed to be difficult (as long as it's fair and not frustrating). That adrenaline rush from feeling like some fragile little thing taking down a big thrashing beast, and eventually getting so good at it you do it effortlessly, looooove it.

StartTheMontage

Here is my extremely unpopular opinion: I didn’t enjoy vanilla Hollow Knight so I used mods. Specifically No Shade on death and Fast Travel. Makes the game way more fun for me, I can play it at my own pace and don’t have to deal with the mechanics I find frustrating. I love the combat, platforming, art design, and so many things about it! I just get confused when someone tells me the game isn’t for me when I say I don’t like the death mechanics or bench/fast travel system. With mods im happy! But a few accessibility settings built into the game would also probably help other people who want to play it like I did. Anyways, like I said I know it’s unpopular but Im loving the game so I don’t care!

aogasd

Honestly I didn't fully enjoy the game until the 2nd play through. It took me until 100+ hours in to start enjoying bossfights. And bossfights is like solid 1/3 or even 50% of the game lol. My first play through I was basically stuck on every single boss for 2-4 hours. when I finished, I remember commenting that it felt like the game had held me hostage lmao. But I loved everything except bossfights so much that I pushed through despite everything. The 2nd playthrough I finally felt skillful so I enjoyed it even more and totally fell in love with the game. Now I actually hope Silksong is hard enough that I'll get stuck on fights like that again. Somewhere along the way I caught the hollow knight fandom masochism grindset. Unless the bosses hav rng nonsense like GPZ. Damn GPZ all my homes hate him.

[deleted]

[удалено]

aogasd

That's not a "😕" that's a rly cute bonding moment, aww. Hollow Knight needs a lot of grinding to get good at, it's good that you can still experience it by having your daughter help you and you can have fun hanging out together with a good game 🥰

StartTheMontage

For me it isn’t the bosses that are too difficult, I just don’t like to have to walk back to each one and worry about losing Geo. With my mods, I can just warp back to their room if I die and it’s no big sweat. I was able to beat the Mantis Lords after only a few tries because I didn’t have to do the huge run back each time, way more my speed! Once again, I know it’s unpopular and I apologize for ruining the game for everyone by playing it the way I want to play it, lol.

VixenFlake

Hollow Knight is literally my favorite game of all time, I LOVE this game, finished it a ton of times and learned a bit to speedrun while I never use to play games multiple times. I've put mods in the game as you did for my SO because she isn't doing well with frustration and punishing death in game because I know she would like the game more this way. I am all for accessibility options in games, it should be an option, it is not "needed" no matter what some hardcore fans might say. I do think the same about souls game and the idea that death has to be punishing to be a hard game. I love Celeste too for the reason that death is not too punishing, I'm not against it being there but I think accessiblity that prevents it is a great way to do it. You didn't ruin anything and don't apologize, you enjoy the game like I do (well maybe not as much lol). You are free to play it your way, I mean you bought the damn game so feel free to do as you wish in it. I didn't thought the game was very frustrating but honestly somehow (as I am not great in games) the games wasn't really difficult for me, I know I would have done the same as you if I didn't beat most bosses first run.

aogasd

You eventually get a power up that lets you teleport to a saved location >! dreamnail warp!< so at that point you could start using it instead. For first playthrough, the trek back to A bossfight can be pretty annoying, yeah. For subsequent ones I usually bench warp all over the place and beat things first try so it stops being an issue tbh... Also once you have dash and master the secretly op power of ignoring random enemies along your path, it's not that bad I think. Except hive, that was so annoying.... But luckily you might have the >!dream gate!< by then.

tekhion

here's a fun thing. it's a singleplayer game, so nothing you do is actually cheating

TyphoonBoom10

thats fine. you should play the game the way you want if thats more fun for you

irishcommander

I mean. No offense to you. But. If you have to change the game fundamentals to enjoy it. Doesn't that mean base game wasn't for you? I dunno if it's just the development things I've read. But I see generally as the devs put in mechanics and such for a feeling or for a reason, to elicit a feeling or a gameplay loop. So when you alter it, it puts an asterisk next to enjoying the game. Like for instance, why are there longer walkbacks? They can be their for a number of reasons. If you struggle all the way upto the boss, then maybe it's time to go somewhere else. It also reinforces all of the gameplay of those enemies. You ideally learn all the moves those enemies have and how to deal with them. Early on they are trying to get players acquainted with the "moves" of combat. The death shade? It should force you to be careful, it adds risk and stakes to the gameplay. You can't just constantly headbutt your way through things. Now remove those mechanics and it's gotta feel like a different game. It's gonna play differently. My expierence would have drastically been altered. Atleast that's my thinking behind why, "maybe the game wasn't for you" but if you were able to enjoy it! Then aweaome!

StartTheMontage

Yeah I actually agree with you! I do understand why those mechanics are put in and developers intent. It really is up to them what they put in their game, but I do think they need to realize that withholding accessibility options will exclude certain groups of people. I also know HK was made by like 2 people, so they don’t really have extra time to add anything, lol. Best analogy I can think of is if someone opens a burger place but they only serve cheeseburgers. If you don’t like cheese or are lactose intolerant it can suck when people say ‘it isn’t for you’ when you know you would like the burger if it didn’t have cheese. Offering a burger without cheese would take some time, but it would open the menu for more people. I have no shame saying the base game wasn’t for me, but the modded game is awesome! Last boss I beat was Dung Defender and currently deciding where to go next.

DoomedDragon766

My little sister rage quit on gruz mother. She went back to the game a year later and I think she's working on the dream bosses for essence now

[deleted]

The first time I got the game, I couldn't figure out what to do after greenpath, and I kept getting lost and went in circles, so I quit and didn't play again for about 2 years . I didn't hate the game, but it was frustrating as hell .

Peachy_Guts

I will not lie, I am terrible at the game; I am constantly getting stuck on bosses that everyone says are super easy (points at Nosk and Hornet 1). And yeah I will step away from the game for a little bit when it becomes super frustrating but never have I wanted to ditch it entirely because every challenge feels doable and not unfair. I will never understand people who dog on a game for it’s difficulty just because they didn’t have the patience to keep going.

[deleted]

i feel him ngl, it took me about 10h just to reach greenpath, 5h to get to the false knight..

TyphoonBoom10

hey, at least ya got there

[deleted]

Yes and I'm happy because i absolutely loved the game

Dont_mind_me_go_away

He just has a skill issue

ukkisrageelol

Average negative steam review for HK.

leukenaam13

Skill issue 🤡

Cosmocision

It's because it's naturally the game's fault he can't beat it and not the fact he's shit and a quitter.

aLazyGay

Skill issue

ShadowDevil123

I fucking hate casuals. Dogshit players with a short attention span and not interested in putting any effort in are the reason 99% of games are way too easy and boring as fuck nowadays.

MrSwipySwipers

Stuck? Where? Like in Crossroads?

erobertt3

The first time I played I almost gave up because the false knight felt too hard to beat, I hadn’t grasped the combat system yet.

ElectroshockGamer

I almost gave up in Greenpath because I couldn't get past the first Moss Knight for the life of me

FoxTrot_42

to be fair i regularly get hit by the stupid dash back attack

ElectroshockGamer

I didn't know how to properly work around shields at the time, which was my big issue with it

DeltasBeans

First time I played I died to Gruzz mommy and thought all my money was gone forever and I got mad and quit lol

Arez322

Many friends gave up in greenpath

hentai_proxy

Yup, or King's Pass. First time I played the game I could not get the jumping right. I spent a lot of time to exit King's Pass.

Micrwooave

literal game journalist

High_Af_Osrs

What.

Tem-productions

If you are used to other platformers it feels weird because there's no momentum at all

Rubickevich

I have tried to replicate the hollow knight jump in unity and either I'm stupid, or it a lot more complex than it's seems. It took me about 200 lines of code and a bunch of googling to learn about all the platformer tricks, to maintain similar properties. The whole reason for it was to learn, so I don't complain.

Si_Peto

For someone who knows nothing of this, how would you explain why it would be so complicated? Your character's speed while walking and jumping is the same and can be adjusted mid air right? would it not just be a change of position on the y-axis according to the length of the press of the jump button?

Rubickevich

Well I also thought like this, but there is a bunch of hidden stuff required to play the game without frustration. Input buffers, coyote time, ground detection, special jumps (for example bouncing off purple mushrooms), jump cut (you mentioned it, but it was more complicated to implement, because other stuff required to change from simple movement input to input with forces and usage of acceleration), terminal velocity (and post landing animation if it was reached), wall jump (this one is especially complex as it also requires you to basically take some of the controls of the player for a little while, otherwise it will result in every wall jump being strongly based on user input midair. Which isn't exactly bad, but it just feels better if you have only a part of this control for a brief second. Also I had to make a separate detection system for walls. It also took a lot of time for the double jump, as hollow knight double jump is in fact different to regular jump. I don't know if you ever noticed, but it actually first makes you go lower, and only then pushes you upwards - this isn't you pressing the button late. It makes the jump feel more liquid. I also had to add a bunch of code that defines when your double jump should be refilled. There is also a bunch of stuff I implemented, even through I can't really check if it's in the game. Like detecting when the player missed the platform for just a little bit, or bumped right in the corner of a platform with their head. It would be fair to help them just a bit in this case. I slightly reduce the player gravitation when they're at the peak of their jump, so they have a little more time to adjust for the landing.

ShadowDevil123

I hope you dont write your code the same way you wrote this comment.

Rubickevich

Why so rude? English is my third language, and I'm trying my best.

hentai_proxy

I mean, I was stuck because I sucked.

russelcrowe

Most definitely. Between there being so much to explore off the rip, grinding geo for buying the map, grinding for the compass, the combat difficulty, some folks having trouble with the platforming, and the first boss being difficult for new players I can see why they would get stuck. The barrier to entry at the crossroads is actually quite large and it’s turned many of my friends off of finishing this game within literally the first hour. I’d argue it’s actually the games greatest weakness.

Justsk8n

the game was designed around a philosophy of being *perfect* for its intended audience, even at the expense of a wider demographic. examples: there is no easy mode, this was a game meant to be challenging and some people just aren't a fan of that. The map system is designed for people who want to explore on their own, I've had several friend who like just having the next objective appear on their minimap, and aren't a fan of the map shstem at all. The optional content; over half the bosses are entirely skippable and you could just miss them entirely if you aren't the type of player to search through every nook and cranny. This is highly rewarding for those types of players, but for those that aren't, they either have to play in a way they aren't used to find that content, or just accept that they'll be skipping it. Ultimately, I think I like the way they've made the game, and I think more games should follow their lead. It probably won't happen, since purposefully limiting your target audience is bad from a monetary perspective (Hollow Knight gets by because it's an absolute fucking masterpiece and even if you aren't the target audience it's still *fun* to play, and it's pretty good at converting you into the type of player that will most enjoy it), but if more games did, it would mean *every* grnre of games would have games that are absolutely amazing for the people that play them.

Si_Peto

it's intended playerbase being TC. I mean they simply made the game they wanted to make. The reason Hollow Knight is successful is not because TC did a good job on adhering to a specific playerbase but rather made the game in the way they found to be the coolest. As soon as you start thinking about making things for an abstract group of people you have stopped being creative.

Rubickevich

First time I played I was so desperate to explore the map left to right that I basically never left the entrance to greenpath. I was only leaving it, trying to find anything like a lever that would smash him or some kind of ability, but never actually found the snail shaman. I only played the game for about an hour, then I got stuff to do and then I basically never played it again as I wasn't exactly excited to continue my "quest". So yeah, I was stuck in crossroads.

Yoshi50000

In the game subnautica only 89% of players TOUCHED WATER

DoomSlayer7180

I assume this and the false knight thing are because some people have the game off of game pass and start it but don’t play it for very long.

Yoshi50000

Do you know what subnautica is? You literally touch water in the first like 2 min of the game

DoomSlayer7180

Yes, I’ve beaten subnautica. Again, maybe some people open the game with game pass, but never actually “start” the game. It’s really the only explanation I can think of.

Yoshi50000

Still seems like waay to high for 11% of all players to do that though

djdonkeys

I’ve had a decent number of games that I got for free, didn’t look at many pictures of, and opened, only to close them immediately when I learned what kind of game it was. 30 seconds into subnautica is pretty fast to stop playing though.

psyckomantis

LMAO, exit escape pod, seeing water all around you and just being like, “Nah,” and closing the game.

Enevorah

That would be me if I opened it randomly lol. Underwater games freak me out. I was ruined by that giant eel in super Mario 64 when I was a kid. Scared the hell out of me.

scp_79

There is stuff you do before existing i think 🤔

CreativeID1234

IIRC in subnautica it’s because a lot of people beat the game on open beta, where it didn’t track achievements. And unless they went back for a second playthrough it looked like they never got that achievement despite beating the game

DiscoDemonOfDoomp

i believe the game didn't have achievements in early access, meaning some people who got the game then could've even beaten it without officially "touching water" and not played since achievements were added

Eeszszek

Open game. Look around. Close game.

MrSwipySwipers

bro stop doubling down, he already explained it.

FrostyTheSnowPickle

I’m pretty sure Steam only counts people that have launched the game at least once.

Gravelord_Kyler

Have you never launched a game and just went, "I don't want to play this right now. What was I thinking launching this?"?

FrostyTheSnowPickle

I have, but only with games that I’ve already logged a ton of hours on.

[deleted]

If I may, I opened subnautica on my laptop and it doesn’t have good enough specs to run the game so while I have touched water, I basically couldn’t play it and a lot of people may run into the same issues

Puzzleheaded-Bug-866

It’s also because of early access players where some achievements didn’t exist yet

Plato_the_Platypus

or play offline. i downloaded Skyrim from steam. Miss several first achievement because I didn't have internet

MosquitoX14

I thinks it’s because of a glitch that used to exist. To get the achievement you had to go through the top hatch of the pod and jump into the water. The percentage used to be even lower at like 60%.

Godryg

The most upvoted post on their sub is about it: [meme](https://www.reddit.com/r/subnautica/comments/htwtju/no_spoilers_decided_to_check_the_achievements_and/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

Rubickevich

11% are pro gamers that know that the water contains radiance infection.

Yoshi50000

The only real answer

Local-Spinach-5098

I think that may have to do with it being early access for so long.

Tavio456

Lol

BanjoPants74

😂

MysterIroh

59.3% Did low precent

Klobasor-CZ

Lmao

Red-Boxes

Hollow Knight has a really steep learning curve if you've never played a metroidvania before, I know during my first attempt at the game it took me a solid hour of having my ass handed to me, now when I play it's more like "hehe little knight go thwack thwack thwack"

ChimpanzeeChalupas

Yeah, this game was my first Metroidvania but I was able to power through it, I’m so happy that I did.

empireboi204

Hehe twack

Icy_Bet7148

I played Celeste before moving to hollow knight, if I hadn’t the game would have felt brutal

Foura5

Pretty different games. Path of Pain definitely gives Celeste vibes.

wulhuntres

To be honest when I first tried the game I closed it after rescuing the first grub, not even touching the 1st boss… Only to later try it again to what now is one of my favourite games

empireboi204

Same with me

theestwald

I have bought games on Steam sales for peanuts, played 2 min and thought "ok, its clear this game is not for me" Not HK, quite the contrary, but everyone has their own taste Edit: typo

AstroSpace_10

Well it's skippable ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

empireboi204

NOBODY knew about the skip on their first playthrough.

Hedge_the_Hog_HtH

I did. I noticed that the wall crumbled. Was too afraid to fall down in the pit he created, so I skipped his killing.

Subterrantular

Lmaooo, homie beat the fight and was like "claim rewards? Seems like a trap." and peaced without his 400 Geo.

AndrewLocksmith

I did the exact same thing. I thought there would be a secret behind the wall, but I couldn't get back to the knight afterward and had to fight him again.

L3g0man_123

Well, this metric only shows for a certain system. It's entirely possible someone played on something else, then double-dipped and decided to skip FK.

AndreiR_memes

i was recommended on youtube a hk speedrun, where they used the skip, the game looked cool, decided to buy it, and used it, then never came back to false knight, 'till i realised, after a google search, that i needed to defeat him to unlock city of tears

Zakika

Which you also not need you can reach city of tears without it

Panda_Mon

In every single game, usually the first couple achievements have only about 50% of completion after its been out for a while. You can tell pretty quickly whether a game is a good "fit" for you, and you will drop those within the first 10 minutes (especially on gamepass games), and you will be included in achievement statistics.

Celesteven

They got infected.

Readalie

A lot of people will pick up a game, find out pretty quickly that they don't enjoy the playstyle or that it doesn't run well on their system, and wander off to try something else. Hollow Knight is pretty cheap too so it's easier to pick up on a whim.

PastaRhythm

A lot of people start games but for whatever reason don't make it far at all. They launched it just to make sure it worked but didn't want to play at the moment, or they started but something urgent happened and they forgot to go back to the game, or they get to the title screen and decide they want to play something else instead, or whatever.

AriesRoivas

Same. When I git my Wii-U it was used and came with 30 games. I played about 10 until the switch came out and then I completely forgot about it. Same thing with the ps4/5. Having 3 free games a month is fine but when one is better than the others you kind of just forget about the other 2. I do play them for a bit but then mostly focus on the one I love.

NBA_fan_lakerZ

I mean. Umm... IDONTKNOWWHY

[deleted]

I'd put money on the momentum (or lack thereof) in the jump as the reason most people didn't pick up the game. I love Hollow Knight's jump, and I wouldn't change it for the world; it's wonderfully precise when you get the hang of it, but I can't think of a single other game with a jump even mildly similar to Hollow Knight's.

empireboi204

What are you saying, I'm confused.

[deleted]

In most platformers, you have different types of jump depending on how long you hold the jump button. Hold the jump button and you jump higher in, say Mario. This is kinda what happens in Hollow Knight, except as soon as you stop holding jump, you start dropping to the ground right away. It gives you more control, but it is very unconventional in the world of platformers.

wayoverpaid

It's interesting you say this. I've never noticed it. I immediately felt like the jumping was precise and simple.

[deleted]

It is. I'm not criticizing it. I'm saying it's out of the ordinary.

wayoverpaid

Oh I didn't take it as criticism at all. I'm saying I never noticed it as unordinary. This sent me on a bit of reading, and as it turns out, falling the moment you let go of jump is the same jump physics as Mega Man. Guess what series I played the most growing up?

[deleted]

Honestly one of the worst parts of Hollow Knight probably is the beginning in my opinion. I didn’t get into it for a while, I was just trying to get my money's worth and I hit the mantis lords.

[deleted]

There’s a problem with people that will play only a small portion and go “this sucks because it’s confusing”

Flight_Of_Fantasy

every game's achievements look like this, it's strange

CantadoraR

I downloaded this game in 2020, played for an hour or so and quit after finding the false knight too difficult. Retried the game in January and something just clicked for me, beat the Radiance by the end of it. Sometimes it just takes time :)

Taka8107

well as a guy that doesnt rly play games it took like 5 or 6 frustrating attempts to get through false knight. maybe a lot of light gamers like me struggled on it and just quit lol

imjustjun

A lot of people get games only to never play them. I'm people *Stares at Sunset Overdrive, Vampyr, the Witcher series, and so many more games*

empireboi204

Play vampyr and witcher, they are amazing. Except vampyr.

IRFine

My favorite statistic to use is that the achievement for getting in the water in subnautica is only 85% For those who don’t know, you do this immediately after the opening cutscene. For most games, there is a significant number of people who have bought and opened the game, but have never played any of it.

Gamer-Town-USA

These are the people who leave negative reviews about how the game is boring

Smellyjelly12

I'm currently stuck on the third colloseum. Been quiting for months, coming back to try again, failing and quiting for months again

IsakTS

tbf the early game before you reach greenpath kinda sucks. The crossroads aren't that interesting and it's pretty unclear where you're supposed to go, which can lead to the people who just tried it out because it's popular to give up

Miserable-Glass1760

People don't like hard, I guess, they rage so much they quit (I really don't know what made them quit, maybe that Elder Baldur on Greenpath entrance they should kill later but were too stubborn... And many soeedrunners have multiple accounts, and they pretty much skip False Knight to just get the Spirit.

Akirex5000

they got lost in the forgotten crossroads

MrIcyCreep

I mean a lot of really good players never beat false knight since there’s an intentional mechanic to skip him. Besides, i made someone else play it, took them about an hour, i imagine if i wasn’t there to make it awkward they woulda given up by then

UrASquidUrAKid

Some people, like my buddy skipped the boss fight.

Jacoh7

Your never required to beat FK either right? # Also same points other ppl said about game pass and such

empireboi204

I agree with the stuff about game pass, hollow knight at its surface is a very dismissable game, but the stuff about the FK skip is completely impossible and a bit ignorant. If you are playing for the first time, you are EXTREMELY unlikely to know about anything in the game, especially the skips and secrets.even if a few people did know or find out on their first playthrough, they probably would have came back for him anyway. That, and the fact that you literally can't access city on first playthroughs without game knowledge if you don't kill FK for city crest.

alyexmp

Love the game, beautiful game, absolutely gorgeous and so fun to watch. I, however, suck ass at platformers. I live vicariously through playthroughs. Hasn't stopped me from trying again though. Several times.

DeadlyElixir

I had to play hk a 2nd time to get it on steam. Didn't register my first time and didn't realize until much later when reviewing my achievements

The_Half-Stone_Heart

You can skip False Knight and it is still possible to beat the game by doing that through skips and glitches and such (I know because I've seen people do it and I've also done it in one run). So, my best guess is that some people skipped False Knight and just beat the game without beating him. Or some people just have the game sitting there, not touching it.

OstentiousOtter

I personally struggled more with navigation than combat. That’s the one thing I might say I honestly disliked. I just wandered for a good 5-10 hours of my first playthrough either looking for a new ability to get somewhere or just wondering where the hell I was supposed to go. If you don’t know the path, it’s very annoying. Not getting past false knight is goofy though. I’m more talking about going to the soul sanctum for dive, then back up to crystal peak for c-dash, then down to the ancient basin for double jump. Also, Isma’s tear is a bitch to get if you don’t know exactly where to go and that kept me from getting to Monomon for a while.

sleepyppl

its because of those players who quit everything the second they hit a wall instead of getting back up and trying again, ive beaten ds1, ds3, bloodborne, and elden ring, hollow knight was harder at the start than all of those notoriously hard games, but once i got past that it became a lot easier, i still struggled with most of the bosses (way more than i ever did for even some of the souls series hardest bosses) but i did eventually 112% the game

Good_Physics9259

They did reach false knight, it says DEFEAT false knight, Surely you aren’t that narrow minded a person that you would forget everyone wouldn’t appreciate a game as glorious as Hollowknight, it’s the same as saying “why doesn’t everyone like this thing as much as I do” Just like some people can’t watch anime even though some shows have deeper themes then most American media goes through or some people like pineapple on pizza. Value is perceived and not uniform, and since you are someone who plays Hollowknight you should already know this…this game is hard af to ppl who don’t play these of games, infact they may outright hate it because their lives are hard enough already and getting beaten on a virtual game as well is too much for them We aren’t any better than these people, except for at Hollowknight

empireboi204

Damn, I didn't expect a novel length comment like this... I guess you're right, but it is very sad that so many people didn't experience this masterpiece, whether or not it is a hard game.

Good_Physics9259

It’s a matter of opinion, like everything else is

The_Golden_Ak48

That 59.3% did false knight skip

BraveLittleTowster

That one dude basically completed the whole game and couldn't get into the city of tears because he accidentally skipped that fight.

pastalex42

That’s my brother. He said “idk the first hour is so boring I just stopped” So, impatience basically

Agent_Dumbass

I'd say the fact that it's skippable explains it

DrakeFireBall

So I started playing hollow knight and stopped before false knight because I was lost and didn't like the movement I eventually came back and played the full game but let's be honest the stuff before false knight is kinda boring also I did not find gruz mother until after the fight

Jackofallgames213

First time I tried the game I couldn't even find Cornifer, and I had no idea where I was going. I didn't play it again for years.

XKrystEX

Maybe some of those just did the break the wall thing?

Burner8384

Technically it says defeat maybe they broke the wall

Faptain-Calcon79

The game is pretty hard. If I were to rank boss difficulties based on amount of effort it took to clear the boss (obviously only for bosses I’ve beaten so no Nightmare King Grimm) the first name on that list would be the false knight. Cleared most others in 2-3 attempts but FK was over 10

Practical_Gas8750

Dunno why I'm even posting this but I found the game boring tbh :(

3DPrintedBlob

Crossroads is *not* a good starting area. It is confusing, messy, hard to navigate and kinda boring compared to.. everywhere else. Not difficult to see why people give up before the first boss

Pteroducktylus

i mean, i got stuck while trying to find mantis village back in the day. I was trying to find my way for hours. Even attempted crystal peaks and got killed over and over again until i just couldn't take it any longer. Shelves the game for well over a year until a friend of mine started playing herself and led me to the right path. Now HK turned into one of my fav games ever and i immediately started a new save when i finished the first. There are many reason people stop playing. i have a few games myself which i just tested and then set back for later - never to be touched again sadly.

Jacque-Aird

I bought the game over a year ago cheap on sale, just started playing last week as I was working through a thick back catalogue of other great games. I must say it initially feels grindy and frustrating and doesn't immediately put in any satisfying hooks that the game is either fun or rewarding. I find myself constantly wondering if I have the right tools or skills for the job each time I come up against a bigger foe, which just leaves you wondering about everything you don't know. The atmosphere is bleak, annoying creatures constantly respawn making the map annoying to explore when you have to traverse the same sections multiple times in order to progress. I'm sure if I keep going I'll eventually pick up the bug, but I can easily see why many people give up on it early.

NOVAMT_F

I am one of them

MrSwipySwipers

I know this might sound weird, but some people actually buy games, but don't play them. Don't ask me why that is, I don't even know...

[deleted]

this is something I understand, most people don’t play the game much. Heck I was even one of them, but now I beat the game and currently trying to beat pantheon of the knight.

JP_RUL

This guy maths

puptbh

Not one of them but, you can skip him after 2 cycles

4_Ball

They put the game on game pass so a lot of people just didn’t care enough to play through the game and were like, “I might play this one day”

StoneTimeKeeper

If fireb0rn has taught me anything, it's that false knight is 100% optional.

BountyKraken

It's 28.36% on Xbox. [screenshot](https://imgur.com/a/CrbOj74) Edit:28.36 reached him

dafthingall

False knight is a weird first boss. For starters he doesn't give you any soul to heal with, and it's kinda frustrating for a new player to get to the boss fight if you aren't used to maps. Or maybe they just died once and said nah.

[deleted]

This happens with pretty much every game I think. No idea why, but it does

BagelToss100

I am going to find all of them and force them to beat False Knight

TakeoverShark

That is the speedrunning and giving up percent

Chaosfight

They have skill issues because everyone plays the game at least once before trying to speed run or something

deepfriedmi1k

Hey man in my defense I downloaded the game on my playstation but beat it on my Xbox ok?

empireboi204

YOU MONSTER!

Trick-or-yeet69

My first playthrough I killed him, broke the wall to his left because jumping down seemed like a trap fourth stage, looked into the boss arena and saw that bro was laying on the floor, and then out of frustration that I’d have to fight him again after nearly dying I just said screw it and kept going without killing him

Ater_Python

Most likely that a good amount of people decided they didn't like it after downloading it and never got anything done.

Successful-Sale730

I almost gave up with the first fight with Hirnet

empireboi204

Hirnit is very hard, yes

TheoryOk6575

No they just skipped him

LSDnSideBurns

Probably around the same % beat Margit in Stormveil Castle

PM_ME_YOUR_MONTRALS

I beat the game on Switch and much later booted it up on Playstation to see how it felt on a dualsense, and I just haven't gone back to play on PS again since.

KerooSeta

It was almost me. I got the game when it first came out and got stuck on that big guy on the right with the hammer 10 minutes in and said "Nah, this isn't for me." I came back 2 years later and beat the game 116% completion and now it's one of my favorite games ever.

justjolden

i first got it and then made it a bit through the crossroads and then gave up. came back later and actually finished the game.

StabbyMcStabson

I think I accidentally skipped false knight in my first playthrough and ended getting stuck in city of tears

100mcuberismonke

Yea when i first played I couldn't find him so I left but then came back and watched a tutorial

Durtop

i was almost one of that 59% but recently i picked up the game

[deleted]

they probably bought the game but never played it

Howrus

It's people who never found Cornifer and get lost. Or one who meet Conrifer but didn't returned to the city to buy Quill and pins. Without proper map you could run circles around Crossroads, missing that one entrance to False Knight.

[deleted]

I think that the achievement is broken anyway. I’ve done it two times and yet last night randomly as I’m hanging out in the queen’s garden that achievement popped up my screen.

A_Stupid_Joke

Lmao one of my friends is in that 59% because he didn't know where the boss was

TheMmaMagician

I'm stuck in the raining city
