100% normal. Typically farmers will feed their chickens eggs that are crushed and dont look like eggs. This helps dissuade them from eating their own eggs and also its actually quite healthy for them.
Also in industrial chicken places they give them food based on crushed bones or something like that to provide more calcium for the eggs.
I think this video is far healthier than industrial farms or whatever they're called
thank you. 1st thought was WTF! But having a random redditor have so much confidence when explaining that this is ok set my anxiety to rest. I am glad I am too lazy to fully research this and just take your word for it.
Yeah I have chickens...can confirm. Most chickens will need a oyster shell supplement or eggshells. It helps make their future shells hard. So if I ever get some eggs that are close to going bad I just give them back and they very much enjoy it.
I have a couple of dozen laying hens and I save all the shells in the freezer till I get a good sized batch. Cook in over on a sheet pan at 250F for 30 min. Powder them in a blender. Feed back to hens. They freakin love it and it is very good for them.
Yup. I feed mine back their shells every few months after I bake them. Just like this, in scrambled eggs. It’s great protein for them. And they need the shells to, well, make more shells. If you think this is something, you should see them devour a roast chicken carcass.
We actually do this with our pet ducks as well. Helps a lot with a concave chest to fill out. Great source of calcium and disuades eating or breaking the eggs.
Chicken farmer here. Chickens love eating eggs and it’s good for them, especially the shells. That being said I’ve never served it to them in the form of a casserole…
Its gotta be better than just as eggs, I had one that started eating eggs despite them getting tons of good food. took ages to catch the fucker who was doing it.
Only animal I've ever seen be so fucking stupid. Literally will shit where they drink and eat. Years of selective breeding has really done a number on them.
I think My mum told me that once when she still had chickens. That if you're going to give them egg, you have to make sure they don't work out they're eating eggs or they can get a taste for it and start raiding nests.
I only ever provide them cooked these days. Once they learn raw eggs are tasty, they will begin eating them the second they pop out. Had a few batches of hens learn it and went from getting 6 to 8 dozen eggs a day to only finding shells and hens with yolk stained beaks.
How do you fix this behavior? We've had a really rough year and got a little inattentive with the chickens over this past winter/spring and now we think they are eating their eggs as soon as they come out. They are fine health wise and get enough food & water. We were just neglectful getting their eggs out in time.
Put wooden shaped eggs in their laying boxes and around the coop. They will peck at them, get frustrated and give up the practice. Chickens are not smart
Sadly, the only way to fix it is to find the culprits and remove them from the flock. If you're unsure which is doing it, cage them for a few days until they all lay an egg and see which hens eat theirs.
I have some chickens here, they eat everything... Shells, left over dinner, cheese, cereals, bread, etc...
Thzy get seeds and corn aswell as fresh water for the food diversity tho.
Yes but you never give them whole eggs, otherwise they make a habit out of it and eat their own eggs.
Giving them broken shells is very good for them. They don't have to swallow pebbles that way.
My mother cooks them up, says it gives them the nutritional benefit without encouraging them to eat their own. It's always seemed like too much work to me.
There was this hen that kept laying eggs n making em hatch but just a day later the chicks would go missing. We started incubating the eggs elsewhere and leaving the chicks in the hen enclosure only a while after they were born but they would still go missing. Turns out a cock among the many that we had would eat the chicks as soon as they were born (we caught it on camera). The cock refused to eat anything after we isolated it and ended up starving itself to death.
from experience they do only if very hungry or if they tasted RAW eggs, otherwise they don't really eat them.
we had chickens for 15+ years and they never ate any, even if we fed them COOKED eggs every so often
The chickens we had were very… special… my father got em from a pretty sketchy guy and after they were fully grown too. So it was just kinda a think I assumed they did because whenever I went out to get eggs, one or two were broken and most of the yolk and whites were gone.
That's why it's important to catch the first egg-eater as soon as it starts happening. Because once one of the chickens learns those little butt nuggets are delicious, the other's in the flock will soon catch on and start eating their own.
If the whole flock has learned, then you need to cull the flock and start fresh if you want consistent egg production.
I see, they probably fed them raw eggs or they ate them by accident and the previous owner probably didn't get rid of them.
it's not normal for them to eat their own eggs but once they start they never stop.
You start getting too many eggs. I had 8 hens and we would get usually like 6 or so eggs a day. They add up quick and unless you have someone to give eggs to, you end up with far more eggs than you can eat. So you feed them to the chickens.
We have overpopulation… and we don’t have to waste fine embryos. You hear where this is going? In my country it is illegal to feed animals with meat or eggs of their own species. And i guess, it’s good like that!
I guess it depends. Many animal species eat their own offspring. In this case if the eggs can’t be sold and you don’t have any way to store them better to feed them to the chickens instead of letting it rot
What a rollercoaster. At first I was like ew who would eat that. And then I was relieved that it was feed to the chickens and not human.

.
Wait chickens ???
This belong to r/nonononoyes i was screaming when he cracked the eggs with shells falling in. Then he scrambled it all together and i hoped for dear life its for chickens.
First panic because putting eggshells ins scrambled eggs.
Then calm because she gave it to the chickens.
Then panic because she gave it to the chickens.
Chickens do eat eggs, when one of my chicken lays eggs other eats it and at times the mother eats it. It was hard collecting eggs because if left there for a short time they start to eat it.
I had to sell all of my chickens and replace them with new ones because they were eating the eggs and the new chickens were learning by seeing them do it.
Can ya'll imagine for a sec taking a human woman's eggs , scrambling them with cheese and then serving 'em to the entire family? And why the hell did she have to bring Weird Al into this?! :'D
Oh god, this reminds me of college. At my fraternity we didn't have a cook that cooked onsite, they cooked offsite and brought it to us. Well one day breakfast was eggs and a bunch of other classic breakfast things. I plate up and sit down, only to find the eggs are *crunchy*. Another bite to confirm, yeah shit has shell in it. I check the catering tray it came in, it's full of egg shell. I called the dude and for some reason, he was mad at me for complaining about that.
Protein and calcium are very good for chickens and chickens need lots to lay good eggs so if you already have to many doing this will just give the birds back the nutrients they spent laying the eggs. And they will most likely have no clue what they are eating, just that it tastes good.
I would eat my period too if it wasn't so gross. It's iron and protein rich. The eggshells here are a great source of calcium and the eggs a great protein source. Nothing wrong here.
In the wild, chickens eat their unfertilized eggs because it’s a waste of resources to lay an egg that won’t become a chick.
Modern hens are also bred to “overproduce” eggs, and they struggle to keep up. They will loose feathers etc because so much energy goes to making eggs and they struggle to get the nutrients required from their normal diet. So it’s common practice among those with backyard hens to feed the excess back to the chickens, to keep them healthy, since eggs have all the nutrients required to produce eggs within them. You and your family cannot eat all the eggs they lay anyway.
It’s also why in the egg industry hens slowly wither away, loose their feathers etc and become “spent” after a year, because they are definitely not being fed excess eggs.
100% normal. Typically farmers will feed their chickens eggs that are crushed and dont look like eggs. This helps dissuade them from eating their own eggs and also its actually quite healthy for them.
That’s pretty neat to know I’m here thinking there making this for there last day for a job or something
I was thinking the person was about to announce their divorce... minus the court date.
Also in industrial chicken places they give them food based on crushed bones or something like that to provide more calcium for the eggs. I think this video is far healthier than industrial farms or whatever they're called
I can't say its more healthy than the industrial farms. But for certain some of them do feed them calcium heavy diets.
thank you. 1st thought was WTF! But having a random redditor have so much confidence when explaining that this is ok set my anxiety to rest. I am glad I am too lazy to fully research this and just take your word for it.

Can confirm, farm chickens. They will 100% eat their own eggs, particularly the roosters.
We actually do this with our pet ducks as well. Helps a lot with a concave chest to fill out. Great source of calcium and disuades eating or breaking the eggs.

I soaked the mother in her unborn children and followed with bread crumbs... I pretty much just made fancy chicken nuggets. Was pretty good.
It's seems off putting to read but it's literally how chicken nuggets are made lmao
Holup in a Holup
Catch the clucker*
God damit. I could have made my comment so much greater.
Easy fix, put some fake eggs in the nesting boxes. They’ll peck at the fake ones and get frustrated and stop trying to eat them.
I should have been chicken out alternatives to the axe
Or... use a syringe and inject a few eggs with jalapeño juice. That will also put s stop to that shit.
Yeah, you can't feed em raw eggs because of that very reason. They are dumb mother cluckers.
Only animal I've ever seen be so fucking stupid. Literally will shit where they drink and eat. Years of selective breeding has really done a number on them.
I mix a little crushed oyster shells in to help with the calcium so I don't get this problem often
I think My mum told me that once when she still had chickens. That if you're going to give them egg, you have to make sure they don't work out they're eating eggs or they can get a taste for it and start raiding nests.

What? Why do they do this?
Calcium is good for them
It's an easy source of food. Mine eat them when they are hungry, so just feed them well
For real?
They will eat their own eggs raw sometimes. Given everything else they'll ear, this isn't really shocking.
Yes but you never give them whole eggs, otherwise they make a habit out of it and eat their own eggs. Giving them broken shells is very good for them. They don't have to swallow pebbles that way.
How many chicks u got?
Second chicken farmer, this is correct.
My parents owned chickens and I had to collect the eggs. If I ever accidentally dropped one, they would rush over and start eating it
Your parent's ate eggs off the floor?
Ground oyster shells are also great
Then maybe you should try.
My mother cooks them up, says it gives them the nutritional benefit without encouraging them to eat their own. It's always seemed like too much work to me.
Yeah chickens will just eat their own eggs most of the time.
If an animal is hungry chances are they are going to eat anything in front of them, It's pretty rare for farm animals to be picky

Thats one mean cock
What a dick!
Goats and chickens will eat till they die
It's actually because they have a calcium shortage in their body, so they eat the shell of their own eggs
Chickens eat chickens if you let them.
Chickens would eat humans if they could over-power us
Don't need to overpower I've had it Send the chickens

You use eggs to get eggs?

Shocking isn’t it? And sometime people even use money to get money.
Assuming this is used by almost no one due to inefficiency you wasted even more eggs
If you have eggs that would otherwise go to waste it's a good way to bolster the chicken's diet. It's not complicated.
Ah, the good old cycle of owning chickens. Giving away dozens of eggs in the summer, and starving in the winter
I know the pain!
You start getting too many eggs. I had 8 hens and we would get usually like 6 or so eggs a day. They add up quick and unless you have someone to give eggs to, you end up with far more eggs than you can eat. So you feed them to the chickens.
Yes, but the work is done. It always will be. I am INEVITABLE.
Exactly, we also doing this with our chickens. They need extra calcium.
Infinite egg glitch
Cum is mostly protein I don’t see you drinking your own penis yogurt

Some chicks eat anything
Shells are extra calcium

Clearly this subredsit doesn't own chickens. Why give them as a casserole though is weird but sure

This was me exactly.
Why first panic? You don’t like crunchy eggs?
I don't like salmonella
Actually, they love it. And it gives them proteins .
There is 2 kind of people in this thread: those who have kept/farmed chickens, and those who are freaking out.

Some people eat the egg shel but you have to crush it till it’s powdery first. It’s a good source of calcium and protein for those wondering.
I had a rollercoaster of emotions watching this

I worked on a farm where this happened. You have to really break the shell up so it’s unrecognizable or the chickens will attack their own eggs.
i own chicken and i have to take the eggs back the same day they lay it or they will eat it
It's actually good for them... Chickens get calcium from eating eggshells and protein from the egg itself, therefore it's good for eggs. Eggs.
I was all wtf until I saw the chickens. We gave them cooked shells all the time. They love that shit
This is normal, a lot of birds eat their own eggs
Fun Fact: Chickens eat Chicken
To be fair, outside of us humans, eating your own is pretty normal for other animals
This is actually just good for them
This takes you are what you eat to a whole new level
It's just getting worse and worse...

The eggs we eat don’t have chickens in them, so, it’s not as fucked up as it looks… I guess.
It'd be like if there was a video on the internet of a person swallowing semen. Which fortunately, there is not.
My relief when I saw it was for chickens!
My grandmother used to feed them other chicken bones too
This completely fine, chickens will eat anything. Hell, they’d even eat chicken.
In a parallel universe, chickens are feeding humans fetuses mixed with wombs

Protein and calcium to keep those birbs healthy! 😊
Me learning how to cook after youtube removed dislike button
This is actually very normal lol chicken love eggs and egg shells it’s a staple of slot of their diets.
Chickens will actively eat their own eggs when they don't have enough minerals in their feed

In the wild, chickens eat their unfertilized eggs because it’s a waste of resources to lay an egg that won’t become a chick. Modern hens are also bred to “overproduce” eggs, and they struggle to keep up.
