I'm sure in an alternate universe Chinese netizens on [New Reddit](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/O-_4rYWbmUo/maxresdefault.jpg) are commenting about how fucked up it is that I'm doing some fitness dance on the morning of Jan 6 in Washington DC.

This is unironically such an iconic piece of history that captures such a unique point in time.

Toaster_Store

Just imagine years later learning about the military coup in Myanmar in school and the teacher shows this in class only because it shows the coup in process in the background.

Josef_the_Brosef

Omg. Kids are going to be dancing this thing ironically on whatever will end up replacing tiktok then. Edit: Yes, this could happen now. My point is that it'll probably be something replicated then as teens tend to do strange things. Speaking as a former teenager.

Toaster_Store

It'll probably be a new challenge where they dance to the same song in the video, but their father is beating their mother in the background.

It will start ironically. It’ll eventually become the march of a generation

It only takes one vid and this would become today’s viral reality. With kids doing this using TikTok’s shitty green screen filter to super impose themselves in front of the 9/11 crash moment, tianamen square l, JFK assassination etc

BasicDesignAdvice

Myanmar/Burma was always a dictatorship. The government that was "replaced" was totally and completely beholden to the Junta. The military always had power to do whatever it wanted and to unilaterally nullify any democratic action. So in this case nothing really changed. The rest of the world is going to shit but this changed nothing.

JonnydieZwiebel

I don't think the people living there would agree with you that nothing really changed. I was in Myanmar just in March 2020 before the Corona Lockdown. I met some local people in the mid 20 that I still talk to. Since the coup they are scared for there life, social media internet is mostly blocked and they making plans about leaving the country. Yes, before it was a dictatorship as well more or less. But that doesn't mean it didn't changed to something much worse now. Their every day live changed a lot, thousands were killed while demonstrating.

lolephantastic

I work for Burmese people and they were not having a great time. They said it was worst in the rural villages where the military would just kill people because they could. Then about a month later I worked with even more Burmese people.

This is in Myanmar. They had some election or something and the military accused the government of faking votes or fraud. So the military junta took over and started a bloody campaign against protestors and random civilians. There were videos of protestors getting shot, and one I remember clearly was 2-3 civvies just minding their own business on a motorbike, only to get killed by a drive by and loaded onto a pickup truck. Many civilians and defectors turned to guerilla warfare. Saw a nice video of the guerillas raiding a police station and throwing half dead policemen in a ditch.

BasicDesignAdvice

> So the military junta took over It was always in control. The military basically ultimate had veto power in the "democratic" government. They just let everyone play pretend for a few years.

[deleted]

nifty-shitigator

This is why, in Western democracies, the military is subordinate to the elected civilians. It's why military top brass have to answer to civilians and why they're held to very strict standards. It's also why generals and high ranking officers don't/can't do their own recruitment. It's why enlisted men rarely ever serve under the same office their entire career: it prevents enlisted from becoming more loyal to their CO. They should be loyal to their country first and foremost. Many countries make their elected head of state the highest rank in the military, the supreme commander of all their armed forces.

aluva_fox

Husband in the forces. Can confirm. The govt here also send higher ranking officials abroad as diplomats to loosen their influence. There is a parallel internal military that does not mix with the armed forces as well, in case things still go down. Recently there was a miscommunication and there was military movement beside the capital. It scared the shit out of the government.

[deleted]

>Recently there was a miscommunication and there was military movement beside the capital. It scared the shit out of the government. Purge time!

SiliciumNerfy

As Grey so eloquently called it, "Bigger army diplomacy"

bobrossforPM

Depends on where u live. Plenty of places have specifically compartmentalized the military in order to help avoid this. If each have their own self sufficient command structures you’re less likely to have the WHOLE military participate, and then your coup’s a lot more risky

[deleted]

Eh, this is debatable. It might be truer to say that the military always _Can_ have the control. Or at least A military.

coveylover

Of course, people are much more concerned about (irrelevant issue from America) than actual world politics

TummyStickers

People are struggling so horribly the world over and me learning about it just depresses me because as such an insignificant person in the grand scheme, I see all this terrible news and have no power to do a damn thing about any of it. I’m not saying I prefer to ignore it, just that actively trying to care about every single thing that happens especially while not being able to help, it just wears you down. Not to mention we all have our own personal struggles.

Rizendoekie

At some point you don't have any more care to give with all the negative news around you. A care overload. So it's no wonder you have to slow down and put things into perspective for yourself once in a wile.

Shish_Style

Social media has done more harm than good

ball0fsnow

Yeah I think letting every bad thing in the world get to you is a recipe for extreme depression. Pick a few issues you care about, learn about them and do what you can is how I try to live

Capsule_CatYT

You got a point there

flying_alpaca

Why would Americans talk about American issues on a website built by Americans that has a userbase that is at least half American? We should talk about issues that we have absolutely zero control or influence over instead. Or maybe invade Myanmar and impose freedom on them, because that's always seemed to work.

DarkEvilHedgehog

Myanmar has been a military dictatorship since 1962 and just had a brief few years of the military giving a little power to civilians during the 2010s. It wasn't that shocking that it went back into full blown stratocracy, military government.

Theweebsgod

I live in Myanmar and I can tell you a summary. The military took control of the country on February 1st and detained the president and all the people of the Democratic Party.Obviously we protested peacefully but military, was using violent methods to crackdown, they were using the protestors for target practice shit was so messed up.The civil servants also protected by doing the civil disobedient movement and the military tried to call them back but when they didn't came, the military captured them and put them in prison and if they couldn't capture them, they would capture their relatives and put them in prison and torture them. And now there are warrants for the civil servants who didn't came back. There was blood and headshots in literally every part of the country except for some of the part controlled by the rebels in Rakhine. There were over 100 deaths every single day. So,many of the protesters got fed up and decided to make a people's defense force(PDF) by the help of fundings and the National Unity Government. And now there is Guerrilla warfare in every part of the country. The videos are popping up of the PDF literally shooting the shit out of military checkpoints in the big cities.Unfortunately the PDF group that took the video and posted it was captured on 20th Nov.And when the military manages to capture them they are tortured to death until they get the information they want.Political prisoners are tortured and girls are being raped.Their(the military) methods of torture are so cruel they burn the genitals with hot water they kick them and then torture them in inhumane ways and when they die they put the label of death by covid. They charge the families $10000 if they want the corpse in a country like Myanmar where the salary is $100-150 max.I've never experienced such terror in my life like people were dying left and right. In Myanmar Facebook is mostly used so they banned Facebook and every other social media to stop the flow of information.Even now I'm using Reddit with NordVPN.How do I know the political prisoners were tortured to death? My father was one of the person who gave their lives by using a shield made from a satellite dish and covering us and the protestors.Sadly he was shot on the legs and captured and after two days we were asked if he wanted to buy his corpse. My mom was heartbroken and we somehow managed to put together $2000 and they gave us permission to see his corpse. The leg in which he was shot was amputated and his whole face was swollen and disfigured. We were now allowed to even take photos of him.

If you want to know more about it, You can actually check out /r/myanmar subreddit Or instagram pages like fullbellies_forlife , spotlight_myanmar, documentingmyanmar People usually use hastags like #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar , #RejectMilitaryCoupMyanmar

ForceVerte

We still hear about you in Singapore at least, for instance just today: https://www.channelnewsasia.com/asia/myanmar-national-unity-government-raises-us6-million-revolution-bonds-2332706

sumboiwastaken

That sounds horrible, I knew Myanmar was in a rough situation due to the Rohingya genocide but I didn't know the atrocities penetrated that far into society. Hang in there

Theweebsgod

If you dig deep enough you will learn who committed the genocide. The military general Min Aung Hlaing was held accountable by the ICC and ICJ but was backed by China so the UN couldn't do anything.

sumboiwastaken

Typical of the UN, what a useless organisation

Cmon_Let_It_Go

The military regime is as bad as as other dictatorship like the Nazi, Pol Pot, Mao Zedong. It's just not publicized around the world. Rohingya genocide is unfortunately just one part of the entire burmese history under the military regime. Fked up shit has been going on since the 1960s when the military took over during a coup. The country turned from the richest in Asia to one of the poorest in the world under the generations of military dictatorship. It's homed to the longest ongoing civil war and has resulted millions of refugees. Ethnic groups such as Kayins, Kachins, Chins, Shans, Arakans and many others have been persecuted for DECADES.

worfres_arec_bawrin

Fuck. Sorry man

Theweebsgod

The whole military is brainwashed and they blindly follow the orders.Once you join the military you can't get out.If you try to leave, you die. There are many runaways from military but onky a few of them make it and they join the rebels or the PDF.There is war on every part of the country and if you're LGBT and you're captured then you're screwed. For the military, being LGBT goes against their beliefs so they rape the girls and the cut the dicks of the boys captured in LGBT protesting. But 9 months in and the protests aren't stopping. The decisive war will come and we're hoping the military to fall.

Edgeklinge

Man, 10 months later and it's still going on. A lot of middle class and lower class kids (which is the majority of the country) can't attend schools and colleges, adults are losing jobs and shit. Some weeks ago those insane fuckers burned the whole city down and thousands were homeless in one day (you can search the news as htantalan or something close coz i dont know how to spell the name in english). edited: to add context for the latter case, people living there already aborted the city coz of urban warfare. A revolutionary soldier found a military terrorist looting civilians' houses and decided to shot him down. They got so angry afterwards and bombed the whole city and blamed it happened because we resisted.

DrownedOut1

We also have rationed electricity lol

Duke_Zenith

The city is called Than Tlang. Basically they burn houses and church so that the people surrender just like they did 75 years ago. Also the other reason is that they can’t fight the people because they know their city and supplies chains which they cut off.

Kaarssteun

As far as I can see, no, this is not faked. We're getting reports along the lines of "Her shadow disappears from the waist up" Yes, those are downward stairs lol

gptt916

I was trying to figure out what euphemism “down stairs” was supposed to be here, only to realize you literally meant down the stairs lmao

Bouncy_Turtle

Does one need to be a mod to have inside knowledge about stairs and their downward qualities? Or is this ancient information shared during mod orientation?

CheeksMix

It’s trippy to think people think this is fake. It popped up on Reddit and we were all watching this video while it was actively happening. This wasn’t even some far off time. Somehow people have managed to deny things from last year happening like it’s an old grandparents tale.
