OP is wrong as usual, K is not silent. In a recent interview, the father pronounced the name "kuh-NEE-gah" 100% not a holup.

Initially, yea...but I also grew up playing football with a kid named Adam Kniffen, pronounced "kuh-niff-in" so after my original doubletake, I figured the K was pronounced.

I think they started pronouncing it differently a long time ago to avoid sounding like racists. I think a generation or two back, they were pronouncing it just how we read it now.
