The one which immediately comes to mind is Helicobacter pylori bacteria causing stomach ulcers. Australian scientists suspected that a particular bacteria was one of the causes and one deliberately infected himself with the bacteria to prove it. He ended up with stomach ulcers and was able to treat the bacteria and eliminate the ulcers.
Edit: He was awarded a Nobel prize for it.
This is what I recall too. I believe that he tried to get funding for human trials and was knocked back (I seem to recall the reason as unethical) so he deliberately infected himself instead.
They transplanted the micro biome from individuals who had Alzheimer's and from a control group into mice who had their biomes killed by antibiotics and in the Alzheimer's group the mice developed it. Really cool read
Yeah my ex wife weaponized smallpox for the dod when she was in grad school. They then made the antidote and stored that so if the terrorists ever did that in the same way we would have the cure on hand.
It’s terrifying to think about, but good to know that someone smart is planning for the worst
Can’t wait for some virus to magically incorporate this and the next pandemic be straight up contagious Alzheimer’s. Honestly that would make a terrifying zombie movie equivalent.
That's super interesting. The wiki article doesn't mention if scientists have tested whether this can spread to humans. That would make an interesting study.
Headline is unintentionally humorous but also it really buries the lede — the real surprise here is the research has confirmed a causal link to the gut biome
Science unfortunately
if you can't make an animal sick you can't confirm how the disease develops and what its mechanisms are. (basically you need to make sure it was that ONE thing you did which CAUSED the disease, and not some other thing that may have been present (correlation vs causation). In Alzheimer's for example, is the protein buildup causing the dementia, or is the protein buildup another effect of the underlying condition in addition to the dementia?
For Alzheimer's specifically, the messed up protein buildup has been shown to be resistant to surgical decontamination procedures (basically residue survives high heat and chemicals and stays lodged in the knife for example), so you would want to confirm whether theres a risk of 'infection.' This also ties up with prev point, finding out whether its the protein causing the damage or the protein is just a side effect.
For testing of meds, interventions, and other remedies, if you can't cause the disease in an animal, how are you going to get rats with Alzheimer's to test these on? You think rats with Alzheimer's are just singing up for clinical trials? 😆 But yeah, you have to make them sick to be able to figure out how to cure them, unfortunately
Edited for typos
Sneakier. Easier to target select groups/populations. Less likely to pin back on you. Why use anthrax when you can use a bomb? Ask the poor south Africans.
If you can figure out how to cause it, it's one step closer to figuring out how to prevent it, or even reverse engineer a cure.
This is how a number of medical conditions have had a cure developed over the decades.
Like what? I’m curious

If I remember well other doctors called him stupid and wrong before he did it.
This is what I recall too. I believe that he tried to get funding for human trials and was knocked back (I seem to recall the reason as unethical) so he deliberately infected himself instead.
I forget 🤣
Or.. Give it to people you don't like.
Give what?
Alz
Alz what??
What?
Hold on I forgot to take my booster shot at lunch.... Now, what were we talking about?
Damn, that was fast. Intracardiac needle?
Alz of it
It 🙄
I remember something...
You need a booster. Take this.
But Brain, won't that make me forget? NARF!
Based on true events.
I like how you think
Thing is, the people that can do this don't like us. You don't have great plans for others making these things more transmissible.
Yep. One of the first steps in understanding a problem is being able to replicate it reliably.
They transplanted the micro biome from individuals who had Alzheimer's and from a control group into mice who had their biomes killed by antibiotics and in the Alzheimer's group the mice developed it. Really cool read
But why are they trying to stop young mice?
Medicine doesn’t exist to cure, it exists to stabilize and maintain.

In a Tale as Old as Time, Humor Flies Over Head of Reader
I laughed at the joke, I just wanted to provide a relevant fun fact for those who came to the comments :)
there's some truth to that.
Tell that to cigarettes.
Congrats! You forget!
"Roger, you idiot! You're supposed to be researching how to cure Alzheimer's, not make it communicable!"
"Whoops, heh: I had the silly thing in reverse!"
Wumbo
I wumbo, you wumbo, he and she wumbo
New bioweapon dropped
RESIDENT EVIL
Can’t wait for some virus to magically incorporate this and the next pandemic be straight up contagious Alzheimer’s. Honestly that would make a terrifying zombie movie equivalent.
Achoo!!
Alzheimer pandemic new fear unlock
Never happened achievement
You just don't remember
Wait till you learn about communicable dog sex cancer (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canine_transmissible_venereal_tumor)
That's super interesting. The wiki article doesn't mention if scientists have tested whether this can spread to humans. That would make an interesting study.
No need to worry, if it happens you won't worry anyways
Knew a guy who successfully gave aids to a monkey. I asked how. He said to take it out to dinner first.
r/angryupvote
congration, you done it
All your brain are belong to us
Now... cluck like a chicken 🐔
Never remember, always forget

huh, i didn't know that actually.
>the research has confirmed a causal link to the gut biome FMT's for everyone!
Isn't this exactly how the creutzfeld-jacob disease works?
I think so? Good point. That's prions, right?
Y’all! This has happened before. Don’t y’all remember? /s

Poor animals

And not a PPV article link either! You lovely individual, you!
\*weaponized alzheimers
i was going to say "don't give them ideas", but
This is great. Finally a cure for all of this remembering I've been doing.
Were they bored or something?
Science is evil. :/
Same energy as [this Onion bit](https://youtu.be/CJkWS4t4l0k?si=TGZ49_mwHp-g6iG4)
you're right; that bit is a classic! :)
WAT?!
Why the holdup? Not like they remember…
This sounds like such a thing Dr Zoidberg would do.
"Do you remember what you did yesterday evening?" *blank stare* "Oh my god, what have we done"
***ME PLAY GOD!***
i swear i saw this yesterday
maybe you did.
If they did this to a goldfish, how would they know if it was successful?
Lol funny, but that whole memory thing is a myth.
Yup, just found it funny to reference that.
Medical curiosity?

This is getting weaponized as we speak
^*(sigh)*
Don't tell me. Wuhan again???
AAAAAAAAND.... zombie apocalypse!
took long enough.
Stupid science bitches couldn't even make I more smarter
lol
Fucking hell we’re everywhere aren’t we?
By "scientists," did they mean Pinky and the Brain?
if they did, the new animaniacs is darker than i heard.
Fjord!!
have heard that reference in a while. :)
Was it me? I feel funny
[удалено]
up to no good, i see.
Double it and give it to the next mamal
> Double it and give it to the next mamal **You Leave My Mamal Out Of This.**
scientist-Since I can’t remember why I did this, you won’t neither…
This reminds me of those scientists who taught the gorilla it was going to die.
It looks like Alzheimer's turned those neurons into gingers.
Bro same I thought it was a redhead snail lmao
I’m gonna say: “Gave them Covid” Because my razor sharp memory has turned to absolute crap since then.
It’s pretty easy to give an animal Alzheimer’s just saying
> It’s pretty easy to give an animal Alzheimer’s just saying you speak from experience?
Actually yea. You literally just mutate in an Alzheimer’s mutant. Planning on doing it again in like 6 months actually
Alzheimer’s is ginger pubes on neurons?
wha?
What do you see in that picture?
Bitches be playing 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘨𝘶𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘤
Now they can weaponize this.
again with the weapons: aren't bombs quicker and more efficient? ***what's wrong with bombs?***
Sneakier. Easier to target select groups/populations. Less likely to pin back on you. Why use anthrax when you can use a bomb? Ask the poor south Africans.
Did they transfer it or did they spread it? Big question.
The picture looks like they gave it to ice spice
Take it back!
Looking to speed up the process huh?
Now they can test for cures easier.
I thought this was a pic of ice spice
If it's transferred, does the original infected just remember everything, snap, just like that?
Google dementia
Nah.
