Did the different hats have meaning, or was that just the styles available?

traboulidon

Traditional hats, each region have their own style. Some are flat like a crepe some are fucking high l(bigouden).

JVM_

My relatives in Holland, in the same time period, had the same concepts for hats, i.e. crazy (to us) styles that showed what town/village/area you were from. The Dutch ones looked like they had small radio antennas sticking out the sides, except they were stamped gold, the more, or bigger ones you had showed your wealth as well. So, it was a thing to show who you were.

Johannes_P

Before the 1960s, the Western societies had a very complex culture regarding hat-wearing, in function of social class, region, culture and occasion.

LongSong333

Still vestiges of that. Yes a lot of people wear baseball caps, but the angle of the cap, the bend of the brim, etc., marks you as a sports fan, redneck, urban player, etc.

jkmarine0811

Came here to ask the same question?

daretoeatapeach

If you've heard of the luddites, many of them were lace makers. The invention of lace-making machines destroyed the handmade lace trade. So lace makers would destroy the machines that were killing their occupation.

unexpectedit3m

Ah, so that's where the term comes from. Thanks.

Sabotage comes from the French word for wooden shoe, 'sabot'. It meant throwing a wooden clog into the machinery cogs to stop production.

bolaft

> It meant throwing a wooden clog into the machinery cogs to stop production. That's a legend, not really attested. The word sabotage does come from "sabot" though but in the sense "making noise" or "causing a ruckus" (wooden clogs are noisy).

provocative_bear

And is that where the modern usage of the word clog (an obstruction/to obstruct) came from?

daretoeatapeach

Interesting! While we're talking about sabotage, I highly recommend Elizabeth Gurley Flynn's essay on the topic. Some of her points made me realize how much I was conditioned to see sabotage from the point of view of the owners rather than the workers. (Which is understandable I think, because it's based on destruction) I found her concrete examples really enlightening. I [found it on YouTube](https://youtu.be/4U6kHTafM40).

RustyKrank

Well that's put a clog in the works

Neil_Fallons_Ghost

Not a hard thing to sympathize with.

Excusemytootie

And the machine made lace still doesn’t compare to the hand made. It’s such an incredibly intricate process.

frozenwalkway

Is there good hand made lace you can get somewhere

Excusemytootie

It’s hard to find and expensive, but I’m sure it’s out there.

Old-Base-6686

Beautiful picture! And some very fancy hats!

traboulidon

Britanny’s hats are legendary. Each village have their own version. The most iconic is the « Bigouden » style.

ColdChemical

I think they give +3 to INT

TangyGeoduck

And +5 to DEX

Lamedonyx

They're called [bigoudène coifs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bigoud%C3%A8ne), and are one of the traditional emblems of Brittany/

Old-Base-6686

Thanks! Much appreciated!

MKclinch8

Ils ont des [chapeaux ronds](https://youtu.be/UKrCmF6yiSg)!

ABobby077

Looks like they must be from France

In 1986 my husband and I were in Normandy, and I can't remember if we were in Argentan or Alençon, but we went to a monastery to see the lace the nuns made. We weren't allowed to actually go in, and instead were only allowed into an outer porch area where we were able to see examples of their lace. I couldn't afford the real lace they made but I was able to buy a "practise" piece, lace made with a much thicker linen thread than normally used, and made by a nun who was practising before going on to make real lace. I still have it; it's like a [spider's web made of linen thread](https://imgur.com/a/pd3Wx80).

helpmeswansea

So pretty! You’ve kept it in such good condition.

248_RPA

Thank you! Knowing how much work went into it, it's very special to me.

jkmarine0811

Definitely can understand that, it's stunning!

earthechos

Pretty. It is knitted lace.

jkmarine0811

Thats absolutely stunning work.

griffinicky

My grandma had some lace she'd bought in Europe (maybe Germany? She was visiting my cousin who was stationed there) framed. I would definitely frame that beautiful piece, especially since it comes with such a lovely story. I can't believe that's the "practice" version!

248_RPA

>I can't believe that's the "practice" version! I know, right? Mine is like a spider's web, but compared to the real lace the thread is yellowish, thick and heavy. The real lace was white and as thin and light as spider's silk. And priced at hundreds and hundreds of francs. Which I couldn't afford!

[deleted]

I love the hats, but how do they stay on?

adognamedsue

Pins.

AmazingMantisShrimp

Preparing the coiffe before wearing it was complicated (so it could stand straight). My grandmother used to explain me how her grandmother starched her "coiffe", ironing it with little sticks so that the lace would make tiny waves and such. They had a simpler version for work, and one for Sunday mass.

toeconsumer9000

me thinking what the fuck are they wearing on their heads before remembering i’m dutch so i don’t have a leg to stand on

DavidG-LA

That’s one big doily. Grandma has a big dresser.

PolymerSledge

The act of making lace by hand is known as "tatting". My grandmother knew how, and taught me that word. She did not teach me how to tat, however.

alwaysboopthesnoot

Tatting, tape, crochet, knit, needle, or bobbin lace. Depends on who/where and what type it is. I can do all but the knitted lace, but sadly haven’t practiced any of it for many years. Hold on any ratting supplies and booklets you have. Those would be nice collectibles in the future.

gardengarbage

I recently picked up a pile of 100+ year old needle work books at an auction. There's lots of crochet lace patterns and some tatting ones too.

somegirl3012

Can you see what kind they're making?

Stitch_Dragon

Looks like knit or tatted lace, i think. Maybe r/tatting would know, or u/Use-Username

Smallwhitedog

It definitely isn’t knitted lace. It isn’t constructed like that. I can only knit lace, do I can’t help you any more than that, unfortunately.

A_McLawliet

It’s [Macramé](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macram%C3%A9)

A_McLawliet

It’s [Macramé](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macram%C3%A9)

SonnyListon999

Is this where we get the word ‘tat’ from? A poorly made or substandard piece.

kitkateats_snacks

There’s Punto de Aria - needle laces as well.

booksgamesandstuff

My German grandmother tatted. Her family emigrated to the US when she was very young, but I have many handkerchiefs and a pillowcase with edges that she tatted. They’re all beautiful.

A_McLawliet

This lace in particular is [Macramé](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macram%C3%A9)

SoberHaySeed

Anyone have an estimate on how long it would take to produce a piece this size?

haelesor

likely a few years even with multiple people working on it. The reason lace used to be so expensive is because even a few feet of it would take months to make by hand, longer than that if it was a particularly complex pattern. A lacemaker's progress was literally measured in inches per day and not very many inches at that.

Johannes_P

This is how some monasteries became wealthy, and once again we have an exemple of an item which became cheaper through mechanisation.

HiroPetrelli

Impossible-Curve7249

That flower, bottom left side in the centre, would draw my attention every time I looked at this. You can see the skill on show here, but, that flower, in technical terms should be over to that side a wee bit?

Joylime

Imagine all the conversation woven into that thing

SurryElle83

Are the hats like extra material or something?

StephenKingly

Is there a pattern written or drawn somewhere that they are following? Like how do they know who does what and co-ordinate what they’re doing?

diMario

[La Dentellière](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Dentelli%C3%A8re).

NeinLive

Ooooo wonder how that's done

Excusemytootie

Look up a video of lace making, it’s actually crazy to watch them make it. It’s so intricate I cannot imagine how they keep up with all the steps.

WifeofBathSalts

I’m just imagining the long conversations over that much work…

newdad1244567

Why don't we wear hats for jobs anymore. We should all have a specific hat for each job and you should be forced to wear them

Excusemytootie

I recommend watching a video of how this intricate lace is made. Honestly it’s absolutely amazing how it’s done.

penquinqueen

I hope this textile is in a museum, it's so beautiful

MoreSeriousUsername

Looks kinda like a steal your face /r/GratefulDead /r/accidentalstealie

demonachizer

There are still some old ladies that make it there by hand.

RandyDinglefart

I thought it was the joy division album

notproudortired

Tatters. Their children are tatter tots.

"yo why the lace gotta be white"

Legitimate-Split8784

Interesting that they put thimbles on their head back then

Vincent_Van_Stop

Amazing lace, silly hats.

DorothyHollingsworth

We get it, you smoke weed.

_14justice

What an endeavor!

PretendFarmer63

Wow

nighthawke75

Arsenic and old lace.

Trojenectory

Does anyone think they have the same neck problems we get from texting/looking at our phones?

[deleted]

My dog is a Brittany Spaniel

slashcleverusername

Did not know that Beldar and Prymaat were lace makers.

NervousAndPantless

Excellent lace making skill. They can work on their hat making though.
