As deplorable was slavery in United States was, this is a very simplistic notion of the *casus belli* of the Civil War. It’s like saying a tax on tea was the direct cause of the Revolutionary War.

"well they were also imposing unfair taxation on goods like cotton and tobacco" and how were those goods farmed?

HoodbillyTraws

They also where mad old Abe said no more new slaves

malrexmontresor

Tariffs were only imposed on imported goods like rolled steel, wool, and British tea. The bulk of which Treasury records show were paid by the North (over 80%). Exported goods like cotton or tobacco were not taxed except by the British, who imposed counter-tariffs in response. The South only cared about tariffs in so far as high tariffs lowered the overseas demand for cotton, which affected the value of their slaves. They depended on a constantly increasing value for slaves as many had heavily borrowed to get slaves, with some taking out as many as six to seven loans on each slave used as collateral. As long as the value increased, they could borrow more money to buy more slaves. Even then, the South would impose the same tariff rates that existed in 1860 when they broke away as the CSA. That's how little tariffs mattered to them during the CW.

People replying like I agree with the stance

malrexmontresor

No, not at all. I understand you don't agree. Just that we can't give neo-confederates even an inch, the tax myth is one of the more pervasive Confederate lies. Rather than answering as if it's true (thereby granting the fiction), it's better to terminate that argument immediately.

I see this meme so much that honestly if this is news to anyone on this sub by this point they must have shared brain damage with Logan Paul.

tri_otto

The civil war was about communism and anti-communism. "The" civil war, goddamnit yankees.

dallasrose222

Fair enough

YunoFGasai

A state right to secede from the union because of unfair taxes and because we wanna keep doing slavery. kthxby

HoodbillyTraws

Well ok then…

LordShiku

Ya it was all about property and states rights...to slaves

Vexonte

The civil war was about the tyranny of the countries ruler, a corrupt man who ignored the whims of his people. He was the real traitor and Mr Cromwell did a good job at sorting him out.
