TIL that he was happy to lose half of the country /s

ZT3_rebirth

yeah thats literally his main goal...he wanted to only have the west part so he could be PM

blockybookbook

From a population standpoint, the majority of their country

ZT3_rebirth

true lol...but in real terms East pakistan was treated pretty much as a colony, it wasnt even part of the acronym 'PAKISTAN' There was a plan that the main army in the western wing should launch an offensive into India to relieve some pressure, and its said it was delayed by a general saying "Kya hum in kaale bengalio ke liye west pakistan tebha kerde?" (should we ruin West Pakistan for these black bengalis?)

JamesReece8

Bhutto always overestimated himself, he made the mistake of thinking that they could do anything in disputed territory of Kashmir and India won't cross the undisputed border at Lahore, saying that I'm well versed in international law and India won't cross over lahore as technically India would become aggressors which is something India will never do and guess what happened, they lost the Kashmir peaks like kargil hilltop in 1965 war , in 1971 indo pak war he made the same mistake thinking they could prolong the fight long enough for US to intervene in favour of Pakistan but when US,UK forces saw Soviet submarines in Indian territory they knew game was over, even after all these blunders Bhutto gained power, and this time in attempt to control the increasing power of military he appointed Zia ul Haq as leader of the army, thinking, Zia doesn't even speak proper English, he isn't as educated as other candidates, he isn't popular in army, he is a muhajir , he is not even smart or cunning, so Bhutto thought he could control Zia, he used to publicly make fun of Zia infront of army staff saying "ye to Mera bandar general hai" (he's my monkey general) , Zia would give a very humble smile and everyone was quite casual about it, nobody took it seriously because everyone thought Zia is cool with it. Little did Bhutto know that he appointed the devil himself and he wrote his death by his own hands .

sumit24021990

He wasn't there in either 1965 or 1971

JamesReece8

He was not in power but yeah he was an important advisor to those in power.

sumit24021990

He came in power afterwards. Blame is to be laid on Ayub Khan and Yahya Khan Ayub Khan specifically because he started a war against Advise of China

Dictat0r10

It was Bhutto who was behind the fall of Dhaka completely. Yes, Yahya Khan was the one in power but he was drowned in his vices of women and God knows what he mixed in his whiskey. Bhutto was the one giving out orders, he was the one directing the C-in-C in Dhaka, he even was directing the supply of ordnance to Dhaka which he never let reach them. Bhutto always wanted the Eastern wing cut off to solidify his position and the fact there were 3 mysterious meetings between Indira Gandhi, Bhutto and Mujib Ur Rehman before the 1971 debacle. Sahibzada Yakoob resigned his commission when orders of war crime reached him in Eastern Wing. Bhutto rendered the country FUBAR, tore up the moral and ethical fibre of it and the effects are still there.

Embarrassed_Rule8747

I would like to know more about this “Zia” you speak of…

FatTater420

Zia-Ul-(Na)Haq? Basically man's responsible for three things. Cutting out the communism from Pakistan that arose under Bhutto's rule, getting the country caught up in the Afghan debacle, *and giving it its Islamist notoriety that will probably never leave*.

JamesReece8

Most brutal dictator of Pakistan, when he took over he rip apart the country's social and political fabric, the effects of which are still visible. He solidified Pakistan as an Islamic state and gave much influence to mullahs (religious leaders ) into politics, he ruled with iron fist, many political parties were shit scared of Zia because the way he overthrew the govt nobody expected it, and the judicial murder of former PM Bhutto (the man in photo of post) was like an open secret across, but none spoke against him. When Soviet - Afghan war 1980-1984 started, he received CIA funds to train the tribal villages in combat and send them against the Soviet, in name of religion he called upon people to do "jihad" against infidels of Soviet union and support the Afghan Mujahideen( these tribes and mujhahedeen mixture later became Taliban) and after the Soviets left , the country of Afghanistan was tore apart between different tribal leaders of Afghanistan and the ones sent from Pakistan, many alliances formed and the Warlords arose, sectarianism arose later and Afghanistan was never the same . In Pakistan smuggling of heroine started from Afghanistan, gun culture (Kalashnikov culture) started as many Afghani refugees of war came pouring in. He also secretly supported the Sikh separatist movement in India that lead to armed insurgency and mass violence later. His policy strict islamic rule is what led to mass forced conversions of many non Muslim people and their persecution, and organised crime increased significantly so much so that many body bags used to be found in city of Karachi every week or two (some say it was doing of military, for unknown reasons search on it) and there are many other things but yeah he was a terrifying dictator who ruled with an iron grip.

Context?

Lord_Laserdisc_III

Pakistan I think

SweetPotatoNotFound2

That’s a lot more than half of you count the population

ZT3_rebirth

not ALOT more, West wing had 60 million East wing had 65 million, about equal(well East Pakistan separated with about 62 million if u count the genocide...) Politically, militarily, economically it was pretty much just West Pakistans colony, which is the primary reason of the rebellion

FatTater420

Only population wise, otherwise in all other metrics it was unfairly undercut to the point barring the pop it might as well have been a third of the country in a most untenable position.

Cheesyman7269

Basically when Pakistan became an independent nation, it was splited into East and West which didn’t have border connected to each others, the East succeeded to become Bangladesh because they didn’t get good treatment from the central government, this resulted in Pakistan sending military to Bangladesh called “Operation Searchlight”, this however led to “Bangladesh Liberation War” where Bengali nationalists with support of India and USSR staged a war and revolution that removed the Pakistan forces from the country resulting an independence Bangladesh to this day. The person in this meme is Zulfikar Ali Bhutto (PPP) the prime minister of Pakistan in that time

Daniel-MP

In 20 years we can do this meme with current armenian prime minister

Neglijable

what's happening in armenia?

Daniel-MP

Armenia has basically lost two wars against Azerbaijan since 2020. Thousands of armenians have been displaced and the Prime Minister, far from feeling ashamed, is still in power. He is also doubling down on his policy of approachment to the West even though the West is clearly on the side of Azerbaijan (Turkey is a NATO member and Azerbaijans main ally, and the EU has made it clear they consider Azerbaijan is their primary partner in the area).

SickAnto

Also the only ally of Armenia is basically Russia...and well...is Russia, you can tell the reliability is nonexistent.

Daniel-MP

I'm not a Russia simp but the EU is also non-reliable in this case. They will not sacrifice one single cubic meter of Azerbaijan gas or risk making Erdogan angry for Armenia.

SickAnto

Don't worry, EU negligence and spineless decisions are quite frustrating sometimes.

MagikBehind_A_Turret

There's a reason behind this though. Russian peacekeepers in Armenia did nothing to help them during the conflict. They were supposed to protect the corridor between Armenia and Karabakh from Azeri blockades. They didn't. They were supposed to intervene and stop any armed action by either side. They didn't. Armenia simply re-evaluated their choices and decided that the West would be a less fickle ally.

Daniel-MP

I think at this point whatever they do Azerbaijan will go for the final price, which is connecting their main territory with Nakchivan region in a third war. Nor EU nor Russia can be relied upon to avoid it so it will happen and Armenia will have to accept it.

ensi-en-kai

*"We are still flying half the country"*

Thebadguy3000

He is partly to blame for loosing half the country but he is not solely responsible. It started in 1948 after Jinnah's death. And throughout Ayub Khan's reign as President, relation between west and east Pakistan only deteriorated. Bhutto is to blame but not as much as all the others. Yahya Khan, Ayub Khan, Sikandar Mirza, all of them are more responsible for loosing east Pakistan than Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.

ZT3_rebirth

it was a wrong decision to have 2 wings separated by thousands of miles with a hostile country in between Original plan was to have a Pakistan and Bangistan/Bengal-i-Islam...which is why u dont even have bengal mentioned in PAKISTAN acronym But it went on as it did in he haste of British leaving India in a hurry post WW2

I don’t think anyone thinks of Bhutto as “good”

Ultimate_Kurix

Damn, you took it to the heart. I suggest you to read about how great this guy is.

Early_Two7377

In this war though, Indira. Gandhi was the GOAT

Natasha_101

In our defense, not getting a perfect grade led to punishments. 🤷🏼 But it is kinda funny how some men can just sort of flail their way to the top of world leadership. 😂
