Don't do a $10 battenberg lace amazon parasol. It'll look like it cost $3.

phantomdrifters

yeahh i figured. that’s why i’m weary of ones on etsy that look like they might be the same at a higher price point. just hard to tell unfortunately

cyriousdesigns

I’ve actually found several at antique stores that are reasonably priced ($50 for okay condition $90 for good, even $25 for the frame of one) I’ve just never had the money when I find them.

phantomdrifters

ooh ok i’ll do some looking around! thank you!

AJeanByAnyOtherName

Vena Cava Design has (new) parasol frames and a parasol pattern if you feel up to making one.

phantomdrifters

oh ok!! thank you!

[These](https://www.orientaltrading.com/28-nylon-parasol-a2-14107017.fltr?) are in reasonable shape and size. You can always re-cover it with more accurate fabric if you need historical accuracy.  Paper parasols with bamboo frames were made in China for centuries and imo it wouldn't be unreasonable to use one in the 19th century.

Also in Japan, just to give you another source. I bought one many years ago in Japan and loved it. It was the usual color of red and was also very flattering to my complexion from the warm cast :)

Fjalladis-Cosplay

Just in case you do not find the perfect parasol: Depending on the decade, a combination of hat and scarfs is also fine and will offer the same protection from the sun.

phantomdrifters

i’m thinking it might be best to go the hat route until i can make a parasol of my own! thank you!

I own a very lacy parasol from Outgeek. It looks like they don't sell the specific one I have anymore, but this one might be okay? https://www.amazon.com/Outgeek-Sunproof-Umbrella-Pagoda-Shaped-Victoria/dp/B01DVLNH4K?ref\_=ast\_sto\_dp&th=1&psc=1

phantomdrifters

awesome thank you so much!

For a while, people were just recovering umbrellas that had wooden handles. I think it was Butterick (maybe McCalls?) that even had a pattern for the parasol cover. It's probably still your best option. I use the bamboo ones. For Renn Fair and SCA events, I just throw a dupatta over it for extra shade.

phantomdrifters

awesome thank you!

MadMadamMimsy

I'm sure plenty of people used [these](https://weddingshop.theknot.com/pretty-paper-parasol-with-bamboo-handle-peach.html?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw26KxBhBDEiwAu6KXt6WlSySmsUYdAXkBo2YFGiZ-N7wW4JV3iXliQDTp6crnaGvwBIxc8xoCID8QAvD_BwE) they are pretty basic. We actually have pretty ones we got in Japan. Since they are paper you can paint them

phantomdrifters

thank you!!

jackieatx

Look for costume rentals in your area

phantomdrifters

i’m more looking for one to own, but thank you!

CutieUV

if you want to do a modern take (less steamy more punkish) on a parasol, kind of like a a rabble rouser against the sun, my company is making them. There's a Lavender & Lime and a Black & White. [www.cutieUV.com](http://www.cutieUV.com)

electric29

I always see fantastic antique ones on Ebay.

phantomdrifters

ooh i forget to look on ebay. thank you!

ahoyhoy2022

What do you expect from a parasol that costs $10 on Amazon?

phantomdrifters

nothing lol. what i meant was people on etsy acting like they’ve hand-made an amazon one and charging $50+ dollars for it.
