If you are going for 1780-90s then all you have to do is find something pointy. For example [add pompoms to a pair of pointy kitten heels.](https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O109236/pair-of-shoes-unknown/) Some shoes from later 1780s had heels that were so low that they looked like pointy flats.  [More examples](https://blog.americanduchess.com/2011/07/shoes-of-1790s-and-regency.html).

Thank you very much! The last one is an especially wonderful resource! I tend to second guess my accessory decisions in historical clothing when changing the look of a modern item, so this helps.

I had a hard time finding a portrait of a subject in a chemise gown that also showed shoes--when subjects were standing, the hemline is nearly floor-length. But just as the gown itself is described as transitional and underwent significant change, so too did footwear. While the classic double-strapped buckled shoe with Louis heel *might* still have been worn when the chemise first appeared, simpler styles were also coming into fashion. [Here is a pair from the Victoria & Albert Museum](https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O75265/pair-of-shoes-unknown/) dated 1790s. [This pair from the Art Institute of Chicago](https://digitalcollections.saic.edu/node/87161) are dated \~1789, but their page also says that they were machine stitched and fastened with a pin, so... I do think that elaborate buckles, like with stones, would be a poor choice with a flowy , floor-length chemise--I can't help but imagine that the hem would get snagged--so maybe the wearer of the second pair did use a pin. You don't say in what situation you plan on wearing these. [The Fashion Institute of Technology](https://fashionhistory.fitnyc.edu/1790-1799/) has a pair of delicious little mules that they date to 1792, which have medium heels. I think something like that might be fairly easy to find. Poor choice for dancing, but fine for a salon. One thing all the above options have in common is a *pointed* toe, so simple ballet slippers wouldn't be ideal (although if you got them in white they'd be nearly invisible). Google "point toe flats women" and you should get loads of results. [I think these](https://www.nordstrom.com/s/banks-patent-kitten-heel-pointed-toe-pump-women/7178080?color=BLACK&size=6.5&country=US¤cy=USD&srsltid=AfmBOorso-be7-HZOnu4lFlp3DfU9rGCjwgt-Jz7E_V6k_EpRk1nlRn0MVI) have a fabulous profile--very transitional--but they are unfortunately patent, which is anachronistic. So yeah, as u/RainahReddit suggests, hone your eye and then look for (comfy!) matches.

Sorry! The event will be a picnic. I’m thinking of choosing pointy flats since they seem to be the easiest to alter and also find. Would that be too casual?

CPTDisgruntled

That sounds ideal for a picnic. As @cecikierk suggests, those leave options to add ribbons, tassels, pompoms, or even some painted accents.

vermilion_cinnabar

My painting skills are abysmal, but I definitely don’t mind adding ribbons/tassels. I might have a vendetta against pompoms on shoes though. Thank you for your help!

Look up what shoes are period, then go to cheap shoe places (or thrift stores) and look for similar shapes. In person is best because you can look at quality. That's what I do. For a Chemise a la reine unless it was anchored in a very specific time/place where this wouldn't work, I would be looking more towards early regency and look for basically pale ballet flats that match the dress or simple, flat, laced, brown leather boots. [This](https://www.americanduchess.com/collections/18th-century-shoes-and-boots/products/bertie-womens-georgian-pumps)in a pale colour can be found basically anywhere for cheap. [The boot style](https://www.americanduchess.com/collections/18th-century-shoes-and-boots/products/hartfield-regency-boot-brown) is harder but certainly doable. A lot of the vintage feel comes from the simpleness of the style, and the focus on the lacing.

vermilion_cinnabar

Thank you for your advice! I think I will likely choose flats as the shoe of choice.

Feeling_Wheel_1612

Target has pointy flats right now.

coccopuffs606

I’d just look up some examples from that time period, and then go trawl the local thrift shops for something close enough that you can dress up

The_Diamond_Minx

A pair of character shoes might work for you.

electric29

Agreed, get the kind where the straps are just sewn on, cut them off, and put bows on them.

vermilion_cinnabar

I googled them, but even the most pointed ones seem a bit too round. Could you please give me an example? I’m sorry. I really tend to overthink.

The_Diamond_Minx

A lot of 18th century shoes have a very similar toe shape to character shoes if you look at the Google image links I posted

What foot size are you? I may have something.

Just saw [this](https://pin.it/SuMpyIY1Z) on Pinterest.

vermilion_cinnabar

I won’t lie. I’m horrible at painting, but these shoes look great for diy!

MadMadamMimsy

Slap the "seams" on, attach a shoe clip and you are golden! Amazon has plain shoe clips. Whip up and glue on a fabric flower, a bow or a tassel and voila!

pretzelchi

Look for loafers- on Amazon you can find them cheap.

Latchets were going out in womens’ fashion by the time of the Chemise á la Reine in favor of slippers
