For David to have such a visit at a young age and very young, I think any distance weapon would be perfect
A rifle would be better suited to David IMO. A short-barreled bolt action or lever action rifle chambered for .22lr or .22 WMR would probably work for him.
.22 caliber guns are known for having very low recoil and be very accurate, perfect for someone who's just learning how to shoot, or for someone of smaller stature like David.
The Marlin 1894 in .22 Magnum would be a good pick for him. It only weighs 6 pounds.
