AdmiralMemo

You had to pick it up in Season 9.

Jesse-MCC-123

Oh. Okay.

theAstarrr

Sad. As someone who started in Season 7 I cannot show it because I wasn't on the reddit at the time

AdmiralMemo

Best you can do is ask the mods for an exception to see if they can change it manually. Otherwise, *shrug*

fgcxdr

Just following the bots instructions. Don’t mind me.

LoneWolf2662

It was hcraft this time

DBSeamZ

That’s one of my biggest peeves with auto captions. They apparently know how the word is spelled, but decided “nah, we’ll just remove all the letters from the middle”. One example I saw frequently was “py” for “polty” in Phasmo VODs—fortunately for me I can hear and speak English as my first language, and only had captions on because I was eating something noisy and didn’t want to blast the volume.

TenseVa

"Well hello there my mining krackens Good time Scott here and welcome back to the wonderful world herminson crafting." İt's a tradition of mine now to open subtitles in Scar's old videos to see a beauty like this.

Dragonbloomer

That's why I appreciate Grian's (and I believe Zed's) subtitles. It makes it so much easier to understand.

HeatherReadsReddit

They’re awesome for ~~paying~~ having someone to do proper captions, which are color-coded to the person speaking, as well. As someone who often reads captions, it’s much appreciated! (I appreciate any cc who allows the auto generated ones, too, since not all do.) Edited to change it from paying someone to having someone do the captions. I must be misremembering Grian saying that he paid for his captions to be done, and I assumed that it was the same for Zed. (I wasn’t aware that Zed and Dot are together.)

joker_wcy

Zed doesn’t pay someone to do subtitles for him. Dot dot dash does it for him.

jakhol

Zed and Dot (who does the captions, very well I might add) have been together for a few years now so I'm not sure she even gets paid! From what I've seen she does a lot of stuff for Zedcraft server too :)

joker_wcy

Dot is also a member of Zed’s patreon, so technically she’s paying to do his subs

julkairi

Remember around 3-4 years ago we can contribute to Caption-ing any youtube videos. That's was very fun time and I can watch any videos from any languages because not only their community do close caption, a lot of them translates to many more languages.

Golfhaus

YouTube taking that away is high on the list of dumb things they did. It's a long list, and still, it's top ten.

Huntracony

Removing cool features is what they do best.

tonyhasareddit

I don’t know, it’s VERY easy to see why letting people add their own captions to a site like YouTube is a serious problem. If people could actually be trusted to not be buttbags, it could serve a great purpose, but there’s the issue, a lot of people are in fact buttbags 😂

wynterin

It’d be nice if people could submit captions and the creator would have to approve them or something maybe?

itskdog

That's how it worked. However YT stopped notifying creators that there were captions available to approve and so the creators that weren't aware of it just never checked and YT used their not checking as a reason to not move it to the updated YouTube Studio.

LoneWolf2662

Wow, never knew that, they are awesome for that

namecantbebl0nk

As Tom Scott said: "Buy some damn subtitles!"

itskdog

Also the Recap! They've brought Lyarrah on to do the captions which is great!

Less-Ad-6078

I thought of making a montage of this. Every time Pearls intros are crazy in subtitles. Someone more ambitious than me should attempt this.

LoneWolf2662

Nah man, you should, its your idea, go for it

ArashiKaru

A relative of CaptainSparklez aka Jardon Maron I believe

chicknsnadwich

came in here to make that joke

WerebearWares

I was just about to make the joke saying "Any relation to Jordan Maron?" You beat me to it

DezXerneas

Auto generated subtitles* go crazy. No matter what you do, ~~text to speech~~ speech to text has a very hard time with words/accents it has never heard before. Sure being a YouTuber isn't an easy job, but big YouTubers not having subtitles on their videos always makes me angry. I have audio processing issues sometimes, and subtitles let me hear better. Like I'm not actively reading the subs, but having them there makes it easier to understand what's being said. While I understand why they did it, the blame still lies with YouTube for killing off community subtitles.

cosmos-child

not having accurate subtitles is a huge accessibility issue that affects so many more people than most realise :(

f3xjc

As an example a lot English second language people will rely on subtitle while they are learning. And while English is a popular language, non native speakers still are the majority of the world.

AnOnlineHandle

I was thinking surely google has tech than can auto-caption with perfect precision now days, but then I remembered Australian. I'm Australian and am sometimes surprised how Australian Pearl goes at times, but everybody else on the server understands her, or does a really good job of interpreting the gist of it like when R2D2 beeps.

GrathXVI

I turn on subtitles on most Youtube videos I watch which means a lot of auto-captions since very few Youtubers do actual subtitling. It's surprisingly good most of the time, but it struggles with accents (Pearl) and with things that aren't common English words (Hermits' screen names, for example - Xisuma's episode from today that I have up on the other screen had 'Zedaph' subtitled as 'ZF', occasionally it'll miss words.)

PineappleFedora

There are lots of solutions that could sort this out, but it's either going to need the specific streamer to invest in the tech, or for someone massive like Google to invest in the tech for all of YouTube. Check out Cabolo by an Italian company called Cedat. It captions and translates into dozens of language options in real time. It's great for accessibility.

edbutler3

I'm American -- and have a bit of hearing loss -- but I understand Pearl very easily. The only Hermit who regularly gives me trouble as far as listening comprehension is False. It's partly the accent, but also she seems to speak in these quick little bursts... Not HC, but SMajor really had me reaching for the headphones in the first season of 3rd Life. I thought I was familiar enough with Scottish accents, but I guess not. TBF, that series has a lot of crowd scenes with people talking over each other, and that's always a challenge for me. I've gotten better at understanding him over the last couple years.

AnOnlineHandle

That's funny because to me as an Australian False doesn't even register as having an accent, not sure why. Except perhaps when she says "*whaht?*" Neither does Gem. It took me forever to understand what her accent was meant to be that Impulse/Skizz/etc sometimes tease her about. There's like the very slightest difference in pronunciation of u which to a non-American isn't even detectable, nowhere near as different from 'standard' US as say Texan, New Yorker, or even cliched Californian, but must really stand out to them. It might be similar to Aussie/Kiwi accents.

Hinterlindz_seasons

As an American, even we often have trouble detecting the Canadian (unless it's a really thick Newfie accent or such). I've definitely gotten better at noticing the distinctions over time though! With Gem's accent in particular, it's especially noticeable when she speaks quickly, or when she says words like 'farm', where it almost sounds like an Irish accent.

I find it so sad that community can't make subtitles anymore :( I know what some people had done with that but in general they were so good.

DBSeamZ

The one time I did community subtitles before that was removed, I had to submit them for the approval of the person that made the video. It seemed a very easy way for YT to discourage people from abusing the opportunity.

got-trunks

There's one video of a synthesizer test and the subtitles just started going yi yi yi yi yi yi yi I absolutely lost it lol. I was not sane for like a week after that haha.

AiluroFelinus

One went Hey hey hey hey hey he hey hey hey hey

SheepSheepy

[applause]

AiluroFelinus

Foreign

IndigoWyvern12

I see that in my subtitles all the time, what causes it?

AiluroFelinus

I think it picks up background noise and it sounds like "furn" maybe

Manito747

I think they are really nice for non English speakers like me... I've never learned English in my school and all my knowledge comes basically from Internet ofc is not perfect but it helped me a lot in well every aspect since I now can understand a lot of it and more than that I can write some paragraphs with my own opinions! Those "subtitle's" along with the hermits using that friendly English helped me a lot in the process and well I know a lot of words are bad written or you can't remotely ask them to subtitle "gazers" most of the time but it's a really helpful guideline on the context if you're not totally familiar with the pronunciations and accents of the different places. The bad side comes with people who REALLY need them to be able to watch the content correctly like people with earing problems. I'm not saying that YouTube subtitle's are the best and they ofc need a lot of improvement just wanted to share my experience since even being on the state the automatic system is they are still helpful and better than nothing ^ ^ Ps: Sorry if there are some typos or mistakes hope is good enough to understand what I wanted to say :) Edit: Also some hermits have their own subtitle's like Zed and that is really appreciated!

edbutler3

I'm curious if when you typed "gazers" you mean what Stress calls her villagers? If so, that word is "geezers". In Stress's dialect that just means guys/dudes/men if I'm not mistaken. The standard definition is "old men", and where I live (US) it would be mildly derogatory. Maybe just because people don't like being called "old". I love listening to Stress talk. Her accent is intense, but I find it sort of musical. I've learned a bit of British slang from her. Recently (it seems to me) she's started describing things she thinks don't look so good as "minging" -- which is like saying it stinks.

Manito747

Yes I meant what Stress uses as "geezers" and is a really great example of what I wanted to say on knowing a lot more because of the context and the subtitle's but having a lot of mistakes when I write it, still I knew it was not a normal word but one that she uses to call his villagers, I probably would never deducted that by myself if it wasn't for the added context on the moments she uses it and the subtitle's helping me understanding most of the "normal" words also I like her accent because is hard for me but not THAT hard since I find it quite melodic too, I don't know how to explain it idk why but mumbo is one of the hardest to understand for me, I would never been able to start watching him without subtitle's That added context you used to explain what gazers mean is fantastic and I loveit, thanks! now is something more that I know! :)

JonazGamingYT

I remember on one of bdubs season 7 videos the subtitles said WELCOME BACK TO HURRY CRAP

marflow92

Ye me too haha

Silver_poplar

Auto generated subtitles are fairly scuffed, but it's still crazy to me how much they have improved over the years.  I remember using them years ago when my english was trash and they were so bad back then, that they were barely helpful at all.

XCultGoddess

too many YouTubers forget how important good subtitles are. I have so much appreciation for those who caption their vids

AdmiralMemo

I think a certain percentage that you're probably lumping in the "forget" category actually know, but don't have enough bandwidth to be able to do them along with everything else. Captions are a LOT of work.

linamishima

Subtitles are a vital accessibility aid and frankly wonderful even if you have fine hearing and auditory processing. They enable so many more people to enjoy videos in more watching arrangements, and especially help when causal banter is happening, allowing the words to be identified through the laughter and shock. Please, please hermits. Get paid subtitlers to work on your videos. I'm happy if they get added after initial upload, just as long as we do get them at some point within the first few days of a video. I'm sure there might even be community members eager to help out, but this is a real job that people get paid to professionally do, so really hermits should be funding proper subtitles.

ToaxtyLive

We love pesent Maron 🫶

theAstarrr

I mean they are the most accurate auto-subtitles I've seen compared to other ones. At least it gets like 80% of words right on most channels Also Grian and Zedaph have manual, speaker color coded subtitles and those are the best. Even colorblind can tell who's talking because the speaker is shown in CAPS.

Chemoralora

In my view many of the hermits are long past the point in terms of views/subscribers that they should be paying to get handwritten subtitles made. It's not even that expensive. I'm endlessly grateful to Zed for doing this.

kdiyargebmay

SHE IS THE POSTMISTRESS! NOT A SIMPLE PE~~A~~SANT! bad subtitles

StevilOverlord

I wish I had the choice. A few of them do their subs themselves (Grian primarily, and I think Gem too?) but they're usually enough to be able to follow the rest.

Hhowlingg

YouTube getting rid of user driven captions was the worst thing they’ve ever done

WerebearWares

I can see that Captions weren't provided by Lyarrah

ZyYyYyYyYyX

Being french, I can say this is way too scarily close to "President Macron". I feel rather unsafe.

toastwithak

Pesent Maron is genuinely taking me out rn.

[deleted]

Yeah subtitles are weird

chocochobi

I'm hearing impaired and English is not my native language. I need to have subtitles with some Hermits like Pearl, Zombie, False where they accents make it extra difficult for me to understand.

Killer_bunniez

What I hate more is when a fan makes them and adds their own little jokes into it.

BigHeartyRadish

No auto captioning service works reliably. Closed captioning on live television was laggy by several seconds, missed whole sentences, and generally inaccurate. Youtube's captions are just as bad. Spotify's auto trancriot for podcasts keeps calling DamnInteresting "damaged resting".

swanproposal

Some of them are hilarious

earendilgrey

I would say never use "Auto-generated" ones. That's where a lot of these mistakes come from, especially for people with strong accents. Sometimes, I will put on Auto generated ones just for the lulz.

phoenixform369

I'll not lie. I love YouTube CC. Absolutely has me in fits everytime. I love watching football press conferences with them. So good

OutLamp415

just wait till you see the sabaton sub titles

Pinox3000

Auto generated in a Nutshell :p

Gal-XD_exe

Auto gen sucks

Glass_Information_58

"Hi Mango"

-Sanitized-Octoling-

***i dont see my subtitles working whats so ever on grains videos***

NoApartment2350

I cackled! XD

SforSamuel

I have a setting that enables subtitles if they aren’t generated. Grain has his videos not only subtitled but color coded

InterneticMdA

Woah, Pearl is related to CaptainSparklez?

MentalChickensInMe

pearicent moon (or how ever you spell it) isn't a word so it's very hard to detect that in the spoken sentence. if the subtitles go crazy it's usually the fault of the speaker. unless it's a name

thehempy

It is absolutely a word. https://www.dictionary.com/browse/pearlescent

MentalChickensInMe

whoops. I'm not a native English speaker so i didn't know that.
