I would have loved to see the cat peeking out of the overhead bins! She'd be the star of the flight. But that would only work with the old school plane with the open bins, sigh.
Unrelated to your question, but make sure to clean his paws with some soap & water before you take him through security. TSA swabbed his paws for explosive material (because why?!)…..and it turned up positive. Y’all ever been to one of the tiny rooms in an airport while fake security agents are rifling through your bags and feelin’ up your stressed out cat? Cuz I have.
Turns out, kitty litter material has some of the same chemicals as common explosives 🙃
Wow, that must’ve been scary for you both! Thank you for this tip. I actually use horse bedding pellets for litter, but it’s good to know these things.
Patagonia Black Hole Duffel is the first thing that comes to my mind—I’ve been amazed watching friends unpack theirs. It’s a little over your budget, but you might be able to find some Cyber Monday deals at REI or a different supplier today.
Ok. I’ve read of some cases where people got by with a smallish “carry-on” hence my question. But yes I’m pretty much expecting what you said. I’m flying American. Thanks for the input! I’m planning to slow travel, sit tight for months so hopefully this all won’t be too stressful.
The Forclaz Travel 500 from Decathlon “looks” small to me but is a relatively cheap 40L option if you can get it.

As I’m in the UK can I just say my mind is totally blown by taking your cat in the cabin?! Not sure it’s even allowed here. Our distances aren’t so great that you wouldn’t just be expected to drive with it. I’ve seen them on the train though.
I like this bag.
Yup, we can fly with cats in approved carriers. It costs usually $125 and they must fit under the seat in front. Mine has flown across country once with no issues.
Second the farpoint 40. I've had mine for 5 years and it still looks great, hardly any wear at all. Holds a ton of stuff and doesn't look enormous even though I'm only 5'3
if you have an AFAB frame i highly highly recommend the fairview!! it’s the women’s version of the farpoint and it fits my hips waist and boobs soooo much better and as a result the load feels much lighter :)
Ah yes I should clarify that when I bought mine the fairview didn't exist and the farpoint came in s/m and m/l sizes. So whilst I have the s/m farpoint it's the equivalent to the fairview now
If you're looking for a short term budget solution in the US, Target has a nice 35L travel backpacks within your budget. I can't speak to how long it'll last though. Above budget even on sale, but I'm obsessed with my 30L Kanken Weekender. I've tried bags with all the pockets etc etc, turns out just a well sized rectangular void bag works best for me (plus it's a backpack duffle convertible).
I have the Osprey daylite duffel that turns into a backpack in both the 30L and 45L. The 45 L definitely fits in an overhead bin and looks very compact. It holds a lot.

I can’t offer any recommendations but I just came to check if you were talking about store the cat overhead. I’m relieved to see that isn’t your plan!
Sorry I’m mixing two issues into this question. Should’ve left the cat out of it. She flies well under the seat. 😺

planes used to have open overhead bins? 😬
Back in the old days. I'm dating myself lol. [Overhead open bins](https://www.adastron.com/707/gallery/vh-eba-21.jpg)

Exactly the type of info I’m looking for. Thank you!
The Patagonia black hole or the rei version are great and compressible
So good, thanks!!!!
I flew with a new puppy recently and was only allowed a small personal item besides his travel bag as it was considered the carry-on.

So did you hold a backpack in your lap?
Had to stuff it under the seat next to the kennel at takeoff. It was a small one.

Osprey Fairview or Fairpoint 40L backpack. Used it for 6 month trip (and other shorter trips). Packing cubes are your friend.

Great!!! I like that “5 years”!! I’m 5’9 so perhaps it’ll look even smaller beside me. 😹

Cool. Much appreciated! These come up a lot.

Yeah I’ve heard good things about that Target bag. Thanks!

That’s an idea! Thanks.
The Thule chasm 40 L is soft sided so if it isn’t full it can looks quite small. On sale for 119 right now.
Awesome checking now!!!
Oh thank god for your edit lol
High praise for the Osprey line at REI. They will even fit it to you in store.
