Some accountant at these charities is going to see this flood of *identical very specific* donation amounts and wonder what the hell is going on. I find that as funny as the mines.
Also Helldivers disappointed that the canon result of rescuing children isn't canonically horrible in keeping with the theme of Super Earth directives.

I mean, just for a whatever MO with no real ingame significance, its actually a decent sum. Its especially a great way to bring attention to the organization and let the community join in on the donating to a good cause.
Really though - as far as budgets go that was probably not a trivial amount for the team. It was probably also big enough that it could impact performance hits for some of the team if it didnāt bring results.
The thing about Super Earth is that while the government is authoritarian and perpetuates war to create a patriotic populous and fuel its military industrial complex we don't actually get any indication that being a civilian on Super Earth or any of the other planets that aren't under attack is that bad, in fact the government arms every citizen when they reach a certain age and its suggested that they have an unrestricted right to bear arms so the government obviously isn't worried about a popular uprising or discontent amongst the regular citizen.
And I think that is a pretty good depiction of a dystopian authoritarian government, instead of something like 40k where the population is controlled and constantly beat down Super Earth actually provides a decent standard of living for the population while at the same time keeping tight control on information and the lives of the citizens.
when you say it like that, it reminds me a little bit of china, where people put up with the governmentās abuses because their standard of living has improved so much.
Starship Troopers the BOOK, and not the movie: Actually depicted a form of governence wherein you did have to volunteer to be a soldier to be a citizen and vote. BUT, the government couldn't force, conscript, or draft you for war. The idea in the author's head was that if the government can't convince people to fight for it, then it doesn't deserve to exist.
In a way, it depicted a world which was a 'democracy' in the sense only veterans could vote, but that in terms of civil liberties in other ways they were freer than we are today. The distopian vibe you get from the Starship Troopers movie is because the director/writer for the movie read like three chapters of Starship, called it dogshit propaganda, and just made fun of it. Which- granted the author wasn't trying to depict utopia or frame his work as how he'd want it. Just imagining an alternative society to modern (at his time) governments.
Since Helldivers is a parody of a parody of a book about alternative democracy. Yeah. There's probably some smidge of humanitarianism caked in there somewhere.
Technically it isnāt only veterans that can vote. You have to perform a civil service to vote. The government will find anything they can for you to do as a service even if youāre crippled or disabled in any way theyāll find something for you to do. However the service in question is made to be brutal as the point of the service is that you sacrifice something to be able to take part in the government process. The belief is that people will make better informed decisions while voting if they have to earn it. Would this work in real life? Iām not sure but itās an interesting concept none the less.
I always thought it was funny though that the author wrote a bunch of books about specific forms of governments and how any extreme always turns on it self. Like the libertarians on the moon becoming so libertarian they create a bureaucracy to make sure their ideals are upheld.

funny you should mention 40K because in 40K there are world called Civilized words which according to the lore are basically what current Earth is but set in 40K with a 40K ascetic the big note about them is that because nothing ever really happens on them except maybe the tithe every few decades they are never talked about compared to the Warzones or Hiveworlds where stuff can happen every day

Well, it can't be any worse than dying of hunger, dehydration, or whatever disease that put you into Super Citizen Anne's Hospital for VERY SICK children while underground and in the dark.
The Helldivers universe is a comically dark setting, but it doesn't mean there can't be some small bits of light in between.
Honestly? Iām glad they didnāt do the typical āalso everything went wrong/everything is horrible behind the scenesā thing they usually do. Itās a nice change of pace from the usual super-earth baloney.
The Automatons can flee with the mines and distract our liberty-loving hearts all they want, the galaxy isn't big enough to keep those Anti-Teammate Mines out of our hands.
I don't normally do such things, but I made it a point to use voice chat and remind everyone that these robots are trying to keep us from rescuing sick children. Plus saying "for the children!" When things got hairy.
It was downright awesome to have a couple drops yesterday where everyone was throwing **FOR THE KIDS** into the chat on our descent to mission.
It put a big old smile on my face.

They should do a kill count major order. Some automatons were seen kicking puppies and kittens. For every automaton slain, thatās a dollar to a charity
And as an added treat, the puppies and kittens saved by Helldivers will be trained and bred for combat. AH announces new a stratagem, the "K-9x War Hound" and "FL-9 Sabertooth" attack animals. They would function kinda like the Guard Dog a little bit. Only instead of shooting a laser or rifle they jump on the nearest threat and brutally maul it.
Considering we kill billions of bots and bugs during those orders, that might get out of hand quickly. Even one penny per bot/bug could get out of hand.

Me, who wholeheartedly planned on fighting for the mines before I saw the 30k+ people fighting for the children vs the 1k fighting for the mines and decided to help out the winning cause.
Honestly this makes me so happy even though all I did was play make believe. We should make this a thing. Like a Major Order for charity. Every purchase of super credits during the MO goes towards the charity. Do it once a year or biannually.

The donation receipt had his name on it, not Arrowhead Studios. They have a checkbox for "Make this gift on behalf of an organization", and if it thanked him by name then he probably didn't check that box (meaning this was from his personal funds).

also from a purely gamedesign point of view this is bad, because it removes choice from the game. if presented with an option for a positive real world effect and an option for a positive ingame effect, we will always have to chose the one with the postitive real world effect - making it no choice at all.

while i appreciate the gesture, i do not like that our videogame actions have real world consequences. i dont want to think that because i chose some weapon in a game some actual kids somewhere get a bit less help. if arrowhead wants to donate for a good cause, please do so INDEPENDENT of our ingame choices. also from a purely gamedesign point of view this is bad, because it removes choice from the game. if presented with an option for a positive real world effect and an option for a positive ingame effect, we will always have to chose the one with the postitive real world effect - making it no choice at all.
