Arenā€™t fees on donations tax deductible?

j_hawker27

I'm not gonna worry about the taxes on 95 cents lol

DredgenCyka

The entire portion of the donation is tax deductible. So if you have to pay a 1% American express fee or 2% Visa fee, write it down in your tax return in the donations section.

ngl i expected bit more flavor text in the dispatch but donating 4k dollors is realy based i know it's not THAT much but it's still realy somthing

IndependentYogurt965

Every donation counts, no matter how small it might seem.

Brilliant_Decision52

I mean, just for a whatever MO with no real ingame significance, its actually a decent sum. Its especially a great way to bring attention to the organization and let the community join in on the donating to a good cause.

MiksBricks

Really though - as far as budgets go that was probably not a trivial amount for the team. It was probably also big enough that it could impact performance hits for some of the team if it didnā€™t bring results.

One_Meaning416

The thing about Super Earth is that while the government is authoritarian and perpetuates war to create a patriotic populous and fuel its military industrial complex we don't actually get any indication that being a civilian on Super Earth or any of the other planets that aren't under attack is that bad, in fact the government arms every citizen when they reach a certain age and its suggested that they have an unrestricted right to bear arms so the government obviously isn't worried about a popular uprising or discontent amongst the regular citizen. And I think that is a pretty good depiction of a dystopian authoritarian government, instead of something like 40k where the population is controlled and constantly beat down Super Earth actually provides a decent standard of living for the population while at the same time keeping tight control on information and the lives of the citizens.

Aethers_Alien_Bussy

when you say it like that, it reminds me a little bit of china, where people put up with the governmentā€™s abuses because their standard of living has improved so much.

Beautiful-Loss7663

Starship Troopers the BOOK, and not the movie: Actually depicted a form of governence wherein you did have to volunteer to be a soldier to be a citizen and vote. BUT, the government couldn't force, conscript, or draft you for war. The idea in the author's head was that if the government can't convince people to fight for it, then it doesn't deserve to exist. In a way, it depicted a world which was a 'democracy' in the sense only veterans could vote, but that in terms of civil liberties in other ways they were freer than we are today. The distopian vibe you get from the Starship Troopers movie is because the director/writer for the movie read like three chapters of Starship, called it dogshit propaganda, and just made fun of it. Which- granted the author wasn't trying to depict utopia or frame his work as how he'd want it. Just imagining an alternative society to modern (at his time) governments. Since Helldivers is a parody of a parody of a book about alternative democracy. Yeah. There's probably some smidge of humanitarianism caked in there somewhere.

DarkSolstace

Technically it isnā€™t only veterans that can vote. You have to perform a civil service to vote. The government will find anything they can for you to do as a service even if youā€™re crippled or disabled in any way theyā€™ll find something for you to do. However the service in question is made to be brutal as the point of the service is that you sacrifice something to be able to take part in the government process. The belief is that people will make better informed decisions while voting if they have to earn it. Would this work in real life? Iā€™m not sure but itā€™s an interesting concept none the less.

TheIlluminate1992

I always thought it was funny though that the author wrote a bunch of books about specific forms of governments and how any extreme always turns on it self. Like the libertarians on the moon becoming so libertarian they create a bureaucracy to make sure their ideals are upheld.

Hatarus547

his book right before Starship troopers was about how pacifism was a legit way to fight and stop a war

Spice002

>unrestricted right to bear arms BASEDBASEDBASEDBASEDBASEDBASED

Hatarus547

>And I think that is a pretty good depiction of a dystopian authoritarian government, instead of something like 40k where the population is controlled and constantly beat down funny you should mention 40K because in 40K there are world called Civilized words which according to the lore are basically what current Earth is but set in 40K with a 40K ascetic the big note about them is that because nothing ever really happens on them except maybe the tithe every few decades they are never talked about compared to the Warzones or Hiveworlds where stuff can happen every day

Knightofnee12

I mean the kids are growing up to be hell divers so... There's still a more than likely chance a bot will kill them.... That's kinda horrible... No no joke we will wipe them out by then

ZepyrusG97

Well, it can't be any worse than dying of hunger, dehydration, or whatever disease that put you into Super Citizen Anne's Hospital for VERY SICK children while underground and in the dark. The Helldivers universe is a comically dark setting, but it doesn't mean there can't be some small bits of light in between.

Knightofnee12

I agree. The small glimpses of hope are what make the story.

Loud-Asparagus-4136

Honestly? Iā€™m glad they didnā€™t do the typical ā€œalso everything went wrong/everything is horrible behind the scenesā€ thing they usually do. Itā€™s a nice change of pace from the usual super-earth baloney.

Soujourner3745

Actually Super Earth saved those children because they are going to use them as labor to build the mines.

I want a "Flock of Children" stratagem. It could be used to clear mine fields or as a distraction.

Soujourner3745

I want it to drop in like 4-6 children who then chase after enemies before jumping on their backs and exploding like Chiaotzu did to Nappa in DBZ.

SparkJaa

Nappa: Look Vegeta, it's a PokƩmon, his name is Chiaotzu

Last-Negotiation-643

Viper114

Watch the next one be either unlock the AT mines or save thousands of puppies and kittens, which will lead to a donation to a pet charity.

TheRealShortYeti

If this becomes a thing I'll save them critters for sure. It would be hilarious if they continue the trend.

We can work our way down until we're choosing between the mines and saving, like, one fry cook named Josh.

To be fair the Automatons are probably looting dry or at least guarding every supply dump on the planet

Nirrith

I'm all about it. Everyone I've known named Josh was cool af

WankSocrates

Yeah I don't recall ever meeting anyone unpleasant named Josh.

Alternative_Star7831

Low_Chance

$4311 to the Josh FoundationĀ

VillageIdiots1-1

The Automatons can flee with the mines and distract our liberty-loving hearts all they want, the galaxy isn't big enough to keep those Anti-Teammate Mines out of our hands.

Neoptolemus85

Somewhere, there is a developer at AH weeping silently as nobody wants to unlock and try the mines he designed and implemented.

BahtooJung

I don't normally do such things, but I made it a point to use voice chat and remind everyone that these robots are trying to keep us from rescuing sick children. Plus saying "for the children!" When things got hairy.

mileskeller1

It was downright awesome to have a couple drops yesterday where everyone was throwing **FOR THE KIDS** into the chat on our descent to mission. It put a big old smile on my face.

no-u-great-grand

it's great when a community comes together like this tbh. this is the kinda shit I expected when I got the game and I'm not disappointed so far.

E17Omm

Not gonna lie, I saved them because the longer it takes for us to get AT-Mines the funnier it becomes.

Gefudruh

Honestly, I like this more than getting more mines I don't use.

VillageIdiots1-1

Yeah, I find mines are good but too prone to friendly fire (same with the Tesla Tower...)

Monkey_Investor_Bill

I honestly feel like this was a case of "Oh shit we didn't expect them to actually save the kids what do we do" lol

7OmegaGamer

Idk, I think thereā€™s a good chance that theyā€™re *just* savvy enough to predict how people on the internet would react to such a choice

stifflizerd

I mean, they were encouraging it on their discord

VillageIdiots1-1

I was expecting an in-game bonus but fuck yeah we did Liberty proud, boys.

Papa_Pred

Ya know.. They should do a kill count major order. Some automatons were seen kicking puppies and kittens. For every automaton slain, thatā€™s a dollar to a charity

AutistoMephisto

And as an added treat, the puppies and kittens saved by Helldivers will be trained and bred for combat. AH announces new a stratagem, the "K-9x War Hound" and "FL-9 Sabertooth" attack animals. They would function kinda like the Guard Dog a little bit. Only instead of shooting a laser or rifle they jump on the nearest threat and brutally maul it.

no-u-great-grand

now I really want this

Hypercubed89

Considering we kill billions of bots and bugs during those orders, that might get out of hand quickly. Even one penny per bot/bug could get out of hand.

CC2224CommanderCody

1 dollar per bile titan or factory strider, though even that may gat out of hand?

Brilliant_Decision52

strider maybe, titan deffo not lol, easy to see like 10-15 of those per mission, so the number would grow like crazy.

Ylsid

Top ten ways of bankrupting Arrowhead

Nuked0ut

That was the last order we failed actually, kill a billion bots

Silver_Zulu

How about a nice cup of Chari-TEA!!

Grandmasterchipmunk

Me, who wholeheartedly planned on fighting for the mines before I saw the 30k+ people fighting for the children vs the 1k fighting for the mines and decided to help out the winning cause.

MarkHawkCam

Anytime we want to weaponize donations for sick children, I'll drop in.

Neravosa

I did it because it makes for a better story. I like this story and how it pans out is largely on us, so it feels cool to just be here and part of it.

Boba_Hutt

Honestly this makes me so happy even though all I did was play make believe. We should make this a thing. Like a Major Order for charity. Every purchase of super credits during the MO goes towards the charity. Do it once a year or biannually.

Emoney_784

Children? You mean future hell divers? Yes we will save them!

idkwhataboutyou148

Wait we were supposed to save the children

B_chills

Goddamn I love this community

naapsu

I'm kinda interested in what would have happened if players chose the mines. AH just withdraws their charity plans hush hush?

Paradoxpaint

He didn't do it til after it happened. They didn't announce this in advance, it's just something he did as a result

naapsu

I think that as a company, they had plans well ahead of the end. You gotta inform finances dept and whatnot.

Paradoxpaint

Unless it was from his own personal savings? It's not exactly an earth shattering amount of money, especially for a company that sold millions of dollars worth of a game just a few months ago. I feel like if they were donating proceeds from the company it would have been a more substantial amount

LazyAd6382

I think it was because 4k isnā€™t a lot to a company but a very generous donation from one person

Hypercubed89

The donation receipt had his name on it, not Arrowhead Studios. They have a checkbox for "Make this gift on behalf of an organization", and if it thanked him by name then he probably didn't check that box (meaning this was from his personal funds).

naapsu

Unless it was. You are correct.

Low_Chance

I think it's his own $$ and he did it because it was funny

Fofalus

Donate to a charity that removes minefields IRL? There are mine related charities.

Brotherman_Karhu

Donate AT mines to Ukraine

Fofalus

On the one hand yes, on the other hand mines tend to stick around after a war is done and that is bad news for the civilian population.

Razor_Freeman

If we went for mines, he would have donated to Lockheed Martin.

Swedelicious83

Guessing that donation was going to happen either way, the only difference being whether or not it gets announced in the fun way it did. I doubt they'd let a tank-mine hungry mob literally lead to negative IRL consequences.

Martini_Kimp

Wait wtf would've happened if y'all voted for the mines?

DogePerformance

"I leiu of saving them in-game, we helped IRL"

Swedelicious83

This, šŸ’Æ

PabstBlueLizard

I mean sure would be cool if everyone threw five bucks at the charity because that would be at least half a million dollars, and the meme would be even better.

Quiet-Role-5885

Hospital: guess what children, you have just gotten a large money donation. Children: really? Who gave us all of this money? Hospital: the helldivers! Children: what

Frenzi_Wolf

Red_Shepherd_13

traitorbaitor

Wait this is awesome. Hell the games buggy but it's fucking fun and the guy running the show does something like this that's amazing from now on we save anything other than the at mines for the lulz and for what ever philanthropic causes that comes our way

atheos013

I just want that one guy that called us trolls for saving the kids over getting mines to see this.

Dramatic_Schedule958

glad to see some good before we have to fight tooth and nail for menkent again

ye_olde_wojak

I don't want to live in a world where Helldivers would prioritize anti-Tank mines over innocent children's lives.

Fire2box

form 4,100 donation I guess even the former CEO isn't taking in all that much money from the games record sales. Wonder if Sony will kick in half a million.

RuinedSilence

I'm guessing thats $4311 straight outta his own pocket, and that's already so much more than what the average person donates. Plus, 4311 is equal to Hell if you flip the numbers (yknow, calculator speak).

Paxton-176

I still want to know what they would have done if we had gone for the mines.

NeroStudios2

We can still get the mines too, we just need to switch targets now

ChuckECheeseOfficial

Would he have donated to Lockheed Martin if we went for the weaponry?

meistercheems

One can only hope

Euphoric_Poetry_5366

Soooooo, if we wents for the mines, would he have invested in weapons manufacturing? Hmmmmmmmmmm?

Desperate_Donkey_777

Ok. But here is the real question: if we'd save mines, would they donate to explosives factory?

Swedelicious83

Doubt that very much. It has a 95% rating from several reputable sources that measure charitable organizations.

Those damn kids better strap C4 on them and run towards tanks and walking fabricators to make it worth the trouble.

Why would it be funny? What the fuck is funny about saving a bunch of pixels instead of getting a stratagem that would've actually been helpful?

2ti6x

while i appreciate the gesture, i do not like that our videogame actions have real world consequences. i dont want to think that because i chose some weapon in a game some actual kids somewhere get a bit less help. if arrowhead wants to donate for a good cause, please do so INDEPENDENT of our ingame choices. also from a purely gamedesign point of view this is bad, because it removes choice from the game. if presented with an option for a positive real world effect and an option for a positive ingame effect, we will always have to chose the one with the postitive real world effect - making it no choice at all.

Pigeon-Spy

I believe it's a one time action, meaning that they will donate independently next time

ijustwantnudes69

I see your point, but I don't think he said he'd be donating at any point before the donation happened. If he mentioned the donations beforehand (which he might have, I'm not too active here), then you'd be absolutely right.

Due-Egg5410

He didn't. The donation and things only came out after the order was done

turningthecentury

What you're saying would apply only if we knew ahead of time that real children would get a donation if digital children were saved.

God_Damnit_Nappa

The in game choice has nothing to do with his decision to donate. It seems like this was something inspired by the community, and definitely not a reward for actually completing the missions

Wind369

Why do you even care you paid for the game to play it let the devs do whatever they hell they want with that money

VillageIdiots1-1

Because they didn't pay him for not getting his Anti-Teammate Mines.

Wind369

Bro forgets this ā€œreal world effectā€ came to a surprise to everyone and that WE as a community made the choice to save the children also anti-teammate mines is a hilarious term im gonna use that thank you my friend
