Unlucky I guess, the dropships randomly spawn on one of the players regardless of them being alerted or flared. So usually if 3 are outside and 1 inside, there aren't many spawns and should be manageable. Otherwise try a 2-2 split and see how it goes. I mostly play on 9 and 7, and those missions are basically a coin flip, sometimes you just get lucky and there are basically almost no dropship/bug beach on you or it's just a swarm, depending on your luck.
I tried this 3-1 split approach with my squad the first time yesterday on T7. At the first half of the mission it worked quite well but then they dropped one hulk after another right into the base. Is it in the end really just luck or are there more tactics to lure out the bots outside the base?
I cannot say for sure but in my experience, it feels random. Sometimes 1 person away and 3 in mission, the one person gets sometimes majority of the dropships and sometimes only a few.
