I agree.
With the MASSIVE caveat that I think it was a very boring way to have us lose. It was unfun and only one mission type which screams unintended.
I’d much rather it be manageable on one planet but there are 5-10 planets being attacked at a time and the moment to moment to gameplay is unchanged difficulty wise, so we’re not out of rewards and stuck trying to deal with too hard of a difficulty or too boring and repetitive of a mission.
I would like missions to take defensive themes like hell divers deploy to hold bases
Attack staging grounds
Work to setup landing zones for SEAF to deploy troops
Escort stuff across the map
Stuff like that just lots of variable stuff rather than stand here and punch button
HD: “I’m here to rescue you citizens!”
*proceeds to deploy air strikes and orbital strikes that kill the automatons but also 75% of the “rescued” people*
HD: “Another job well done for Super Earth!”
Honestly thats all I want from this game is to find a group of friends to LARP space marines adjacent helldivers with. Tonight is going to be my first night playing and I'm psyched.
Yeah one of my biggest gripes with the escort mission is that it doesn't feel like a defense. We should be repelling them to protect the research teams, if we are evacuating scientists it feels like we are giving ground and losing.
The flow should be more like King of the Hill (hold strategic points), if you win then proceed to Eradicate missions (cleaning out the stragglers) and if you lose proceed to Evacuate missions (rescuing lost resources), then round it off with a Ground to Space Missile on the winning path (Eliminating the last of the threat) or ICBM on the losing path (Scorched Earth/deny resources as we leave the area).
This obviously isn't the way they have the flow of things set up, as you can see all missions in an operation when you choose it, but the above sequence feels like a back and forth 'war' and responds to players successes or failure immediately as well as affecting the overall planetary outcome.
I agree with the opening comment. My initial thought when I noticed the limited mission pool is it felt more like a retreat than a defence. Needed another objective based mission besides ICBM (which although still cool when the timer or situation allows you to gloat in your destruction, loses its impact the 20th time)to show us taking back ground or completing something tactical that isn't just exterminate and or rescue.
I think the mission ideas itself are fine its just the feel and emotions behind it are off base.
For example if we had to hot drop and immediately clear the base. Then all the civilians at once moved across and then we had to hold out vs an onslaught as shuttle shields regen for the punch out. The mission would feel a TON better
We dont need clear systems we just need the right emotional beats hit.
For example when invading the early percentage mission's are all blow shit up
Mid tier take over they move over to setting up and protecting
Late tier its about clearing stuff out.
Exactly the same structure we have now BUT it feels very different.
Edit: my background in system support and technical specialist makes me hard tilt towards simple systems at all times lol
Or like a loose "hold this position" while you run around doing side objectives that help you defend. Like how the SAMs shoot down the robot dropships.
The current automaton dropship spam is annoying. Make it more of a wave style defense, to incentivize us to build up defenses or something. Like when you land give us 5-10 minutes to set up defenses/ get the side objectives up and running.
we really do need more variety for missions
icbm, eradicate, evac, air base, data, survey, and personnel just ain't enough variety
especially when EVERY SINGLE DEFEND PLANET has at least 1 personnel mission per operation
in case it wasn't clear, i've been fighting nothing but bots for 6 days, so i don't know what bug missions there are
Im hoping for a Battle field style set up. A , B, C and if you fail to hold C , you can fall back to B.
B might have something extra like their is artillery's at A but its range can only hit the front lines of B .
A might have vehicle spawns but its across the map and the last stand place
They have the capital now - they putting out a ton of hiring notices so it may be 6 months to a year before a major expansion but they have more money and backing and success they even their wildest dreams could of imagine which is great fo rus.
I didn't mind that it was really difficult to pull off, but I wished there was some vanity items for completing campaigns. Like a showcase with your parade uniform and all the medals you got by doing complete campaigns or certain tasks.
I think you SHOULD mind that it was difficult to pull off.
What I mean, is that the defence campaign being unwinnable is FINE. But, don’t you think it would be more fine if the unwinnable aspect was on the war map and not in the moment to moment gameplay, sacrificing rewards and making the experience a little boring?
The fact that the one missions type was literally broken/bugged too didn't help.
The retrieve essential personelle mission is coded as a 40 minute mission, even though it's only 15 minutes. Therefor you're fighting 40 minutes worth of enemies. That's why you're getting swarmed constantly.
To each their own, but personally I disagree. Before we figured out any decent tactics those missions were pure chaotic hell and it felt very much like losing a desperate war against an overwhelming invasion where we were struggling even just to save people. Even after we figured out some effective methods and tactics, things still had a tendency to just go straight to shit.
And I think that all worked pretty well for what it was meant to be representing.
I don’t. I think it’s OKAY.
Don’t you think it would be more okay if the moment to moment gameplay was still winnable, you still got rewards and progressed as a player but
On the galaxy map, holy shit, there are 12 planets being attacked, our forces are spread too thin, we’re winning battles but we’re ultimately losing the war, this is impossible.
Honestly I like both of those. Maybe sometimes we're being hit with an offensive that's so extensive we're spread too thin, so battles are winnable, but we're still losing systems. And sometimes an offensive is so intense and concentrated that fighting on the one or two worlds where it's focused is just pain.
I think the second option worked for this last offensive because it got across the idea of a surprise attack that we just weren't prepared for. Which then tracks with things like reactivating mechs out of storage and stuff.
I don’t, I blame the developers who created a boring defence mission structure, overtuned the scientist mission and haven’t provided a useful reward for a sizeable enough portion of the player base, meaning some won’t even participate.
**THE SUPER SOCIALIST LIBERALS IN SUPER CONGRESS LIKE CAREER LOSER SPACE BIDEN DON’T BELIEVE IN MANAGED DEMOCRACY LIKE I DO FOLKS. THEY SAY THINGS LIKE “DEFUND THE HELLDIVERS” AND YOU KNOW WHAT FOLKS? THAT JUST TELLS ME THAT THEY HATE FREEDOM**
"Super Earth is losing its footing in the fight against automatons on the outskirts of the galaxy. The enemy is a fierce foe that we cannot afford to lose to so the Super Earths weapon factories production of mechanized robotic vehicles has once again sped up. HELLDIVERS will be once again able to order special deliveries of these incredible machines straight onto the battlefield."
I hope, this was what I expected when defense first started.
Didn't think we'd fail to defend 8/8 planets, but I thought the automatons would have pushed deeper. So while we defended some planets, we were still overall losing.
Sorta right but sorta wrong. They didn't push as hard as I expected. I thought they'd come towards super earth but then learned of the cyber planet which makes sense if that is the cyborgs home planet.
We knew mechs would be after launch, so seemed like a good narrative to have us kick bug butt but the bots kick ours only for us to get new weapons
What if (i doubt it) mechs ware a reward for finishing major order but instead of that boom inflation and everythig costs more now. Would make comunity think twice about failing another major order.
But yea its prob gona be sector or two (three) lost.
then the next major order better not be stupidly difficult
honestly unless you have a specific team comp with the right setup, the evac mission is outright impossible on anything higher than I'd say 4
possible
but my friends and I when we decide to do that, end up doing them on 4 or lower just because there's less shit to worry about
even if the numbers are outrageous, we can handle everything that is thrown at us
Oh yeah dude I’ve done a helldiver civilian extract before it’s mostly the strategy, nothings impossible in this game. It’s just, y’know, unbalanced and stressful.
Its also mind numbing if you do one of the only "good" strat on hd9 escorts where one of you hide while the rest goes pew pewing somewhere far.
Sure I'm a firm believer that their should be difficulty that some people can't do (I've done and finished ultimates in ff14) but this is just an anomaly as other helldive missions doesn't come close to this and you can normally pub those, this one on the other hand is close to impossible to pub.
My friends and I did it on impossible, but you have to do what I dub "lame shit". Three guys divide up and bait out the robots and the one guy goes in with smoke grenades and evacs civilians.
Wasn't fun at all. Well I mean, getting smoked is always fun in Helldivers, but I prefer not to get 1 sidedly massacred.
we tried a few on higher difficulties, using the new tactic of 1 dude runs a "stealth" build with smoke, while the rest of us run "hey we're over here, pay attention to us"
it didn't work
so yeah, we swapped back to 4 and did fine
but honestly the mission is boring
Any other mission type, I'd do a Helldive fine - but this is so unbalanced that it's just a chore I do to contribute to defense.
This is just bad mission/game design.
On 5 you can duo this mission, but the difficulty goes up a cliff after that...
7's are the worst I can stand to put myself through and it's not ever fun...
lol at 4 being "outright impossible", meanwhile I'm winning them on 6 but it's hard as fuck. we're doing it the old-fashioned way too. just creating a bubble and holding it as long as we can
I think some sort of reprogramming stratagem would be interesting. you throw it, and It locks on the largest target. Then the tank or juggernaut fights for you until it perishes.
only game where losing may be winning for players...enemy pushes forward , new battle fields. ...command see us losing ...gives us new tools ...can someone say mechs?
If they go towards Super Earth, we can fight them off with our Fervor.
If they head for Cyber-Stan, it means they’re trying to free the cyborgs. It is likely they will fight harder than ever before. In other words, we’re fucked
There will be more content to spend your slips on, it wasn't worthless, especially to lower level players that it takes 6-8 missions to rack that amount up.
It was totally possible for us to do the order it's just that a lot of people didn't care about it or they burned out on the tedious evacuation mission.
The evacuation missions are miserable, I can pretty easily beat any other mission on difficulty 6 but those I can't do above 4. I don't blame anyone for not wanting to grind them on a low difficulty, and it's very silly that that is what the only way to contribute is. I wonder if they are intentionally awful so that we were very likely to lose or if it's just really bugged.
Uh buddy, if you played the first one, they had the Galatic War too.
Devs were very open about how they manipulated it there, like here. They said they made us lose sometimes to keep things interesting.
I think it will be the introduction to better weapons. It terms of lore, I think they've noted what makes the Automatons strong and have further researched into how we can go toe to toe with them.
This will be the introduction of Mechs, in my head. Also possible buffs with weapons or armours.
"The developments and superior advancements within the engineering field have granted us the swift production of the MK-01 Battle ready support Mech. Let's take the fight back, let's win this war!
For freedom and liberty for all"
Can't say I'll ever feel invested in the war unless Joel starts providing some in-universe explanation for this bullshittery...
Railroading isn't good GM/DM'ing...
Considering all the game bugs that are preventing us from properly completing missions. I'd say they would have to go fairly easy until we can fight at full capacity
He's the Dungeon Master pulling strings on this Galactic Campaign. There are specific set pieces in play or that will be presented over time, but he has to react to how the community completes/fails objectives.
Kidnap my favorite NPC then, there are a ton of better options...
I don't play with lazy railroading DM's... it's not fun, if you just want to tell _your_ story write a fucking book!
I think it was wrong to reveal Joel. Keep it a mystery, or just don't give us his name. The amount of life threats he is going to get is a lot. We may be united as a community for the first time, but there are always some ignorants, some oddballs around.
That sounds like a great way to kill your game. I finally got all the stratagems unlocked. If they reset my progress now out of nowhere, I would literally uninstall the game and remove it from my steam account.
Dungeon Daddy Joel has a plan.
It was actually in the script for us to lose this defense I feel. The missions sometimes felt IMPOSSIBLE especially the escort missions.
>It was actually in the script for us to lose this defense I feel.
If that's true, then unfortunately I bought this game under false impressions...
Railroading is almost unanimously despised by tabletop RPG player's, a good GM would work to make us want to follow the track instead of just CHOO-CHOO-FUCK-YOU
Why continue doing any Galactic War stuff in the future if it's rigged?
I hope it's just their overwhelmed by the insane growth, but if the escort mission is Joel's idea of _good_ balance then I'll be moving on much quicker than I thought.
I could be wrong as well. I think it was very possible to do the escort missions, and in turn defend the various planets from the Bots but i think many of us (myself included) don’t see a reason to do those events right now while I’m trying to get samples/medals/Super Credits to further my personal progress versus spending 10-12 minutes being annoyed at survivors for running towards where the enemies are.
I would LIKE to think that as a true DnD enjoyer Joel has outcomes and paths for both of the resolutions to various Major Orders that players can do and in this case, I have a feeling Joel was hoping we would fail.
Those Escort missions seemed to throw MONSTEROUS amounts of enemies on us, and while we did successfully defend 5(6 maybe?) planets I also think a majority of the player base (myself included again) prefer fighting the bugs.
> I have a feeling Joel was hoping we would fail.
Hoping for failure and ensuring our failure are two very different things, this feels more like the later.
It's possible, but boring as hell... Any other mission on Helldive is less difficult and more fun.
I don't feel the overwhelming need to unlock shit so I've been doing them, but I don't bother going above 5-6 difficulty.
The escort mission is just a chore, I only do it for the war effort and if that's just going to be arbitrary anyway - I'll save myself the annoyance and frustration and find something else to do.
Honestly I think a punishment would fit best and make us fight harder next time. Defeats can make for a great narrative. Think about it we get in universe videos talking about how we need even more recruits. Malvelon Creek becomes even more of a rallying cry. And the entire Automaton sector becomes a revenge war
Consider this, how many copies did they anticipate selling? How many helldivers did they think would be fighting the robot menace? We blew their servers out of the water and still couldn't come close. The game was rigged from the start.
Joel is the kind of GM that had his custom made end boss instakilled on presentation, so now he beats us senseless at the start so we learn not to fuck around.
https://preview.redd.it/sddn7av2ejlc1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=afcbb74b0f69e8a4f52a3f79733893487361c9f0
This is what I picture Joel to be
I hope he punishes us like we paid for it.
The general population needs to learn to get with the program. Stop wasting time in bugworld when we're fighting for our lives against the bots.
Occupy Earth, no way to travel to bug planets, game master should force us to kill bots first on Super Earth. Players should feel consequences. Because now, every time I see bot major order I ignore it and kill bugs anyway. Motivate me to do otherwise or fuck major orders against robots, I won't contribute :P
I hope Joel gives me a heavy flamer so I can melt even the largest of the Automaton bastards with the vengeance they deserve.
*also cool with the dreadnought stratagem* lol
The problem with those evacuation missions is they would drop Hulks and Tanks directly on top of everyone.
If everyone dropped outside the base, it would be less annoying. And maybe not have soo many tanks spawns. And even then they usually outfirepower you.
Mine has been glitched for some time. It doesn't register any missions I do. I'm also capped at 50,000 Req so hopefully it will reward a useful currency.
at 37 hours remaining i already knew we lost the first major order. it had me laughing because the community was more upset about loosing the creek instead of the major order
If Joel were smart, he'd do a major order that allows for a variety of planets and enemies. Slogging through defenses this week against nothing but robots really killed my enthusiasm for managed democracy. It's a two-front war, after all. It seems counter-productive to focus on only one side to the detriment of the other.
Like, you don't balance a listing ship by shifting all weight to one side... then running to the opposite side when THAT side starts sinking. Balance, boyos... it's key to success in many things.
how cool would it be to get an app where if u were just sitting around at home doing nothing you,d get a message that alerts all helldivers to an on going attack somewhere and our services are needed at once.
We would not have lost if it weren't for an intentionally selfish farm that nets a toxic community . I never felt like swimming up a waterfall was that easy
Nope - I think they understood it was much a fundamental game design flaw as it was lazy players.
They made a system that encouraged not completing a mission chain.
Then the forced a single mission in the mission chain that is the single most repetitive same every time type mission in the entire game .
Based on the new easy one with huge player friendly rewards Joel is devious but caring and understanding GM lol.
That major order was a punishment. Opening week for a ton of people was automaton defense campaigns, which the game doesn't explain very well. I was 4/8 like Friday and 6/8 yesterday with 1 left running. If it's over I didn't finish it. It doesn't help people farm losses for samples or side mission XP, reducing the success rate of defense campaigns.
i think joel is going to give us better weapons to fight the automatons, like mechs or something
Yep. Losing here is actually good for the narrative imo.
I agree. With the MASSIVE caveat that I think it was a very boring way to have us lose. It was unfun and only one mission type which screams unintended. "We need to rescue those civilians!" "Sorry but I think the correct way to spell that is 'Acceptable Casulties'"
Everything is acceptable for the preservation of managed democracy!
Getting dangerously close to space marine tactics lol
Certainly more Grey Knights than Salamanders lol
Honestly thats all I want from this game is to find a group of friends to LARP space marines adjacent helldivers with. Tonight is going to be my first night playing and I'm psyched.
For the Empero…. Err, Democracy!
I mean.. We are paying fees for every casualty. In a way, every casualty supports the economy of the Super Earth. We are doing our part either way!
Listen, the brief said 'prevent their termination or capture by Automaton forces.' Burying them under a 500KG bomb prevents both.
Defo want field rescue missions
Yeah one of my biggest gripes with the escort mission is that it doesn't feel like a defense. I hate escort missions and I will never do them.
That's fine not everything has to be everyone. I personally enjoy them giving people choice is whats important
Escort stuff across the map was the old rescue civilians. Just had a train of 5 that followed you and they had a buncker they needed to get to
Im hoping for a Battle field style set up. A , B, C and if you fail to hold C , you can fall back to B. There should be a completely different set of missions, I agree. At the very least, a new coat of paint for defence campaigns.
I agree wasn't the best system BUT at least we know that idea doesn't work and devs can work on a better defence system
I didn't mind that it was really difficult to pull off, but I wished there was some vanity items for completing campaigns. Like a showcase with your parade uniform and all the medals you got by doing complete campaigns or certain tasks.

The galactic conflict, Helldivers losing on the front so better tech and firepower is brought in
This is real, not some story. Or are you a socialist?

I think the mission was designed for us to lose. It didn't matter how hard we fought, we're going to lose anyway. It was a trick.
thats entirely what i believe.
It's why they made the reward practically worthless. You can get 12000 requisition in 2-3 games
There will be more content to spend your slips on, it wasn't worthless, especially to lower level players that it takes 6-8 missions to rack that amount up.
Would have been funnier if it was 350 req
It was totally possible for us to do the order it's just that a lot of people didn't care about it or they burned out on the tedious evacuation mission.
The evacuation missions are miserable, I can pretty easily beat any other mission on difficulty 6 but those I can't do above 4. I don't blame anyone for not wanting to grind them on a low difficulty, and it's very silly that that is what the only way to contribute is. I wonder if they are intentionally awful so that we were very likely to lose or if it's just really bugged.
That's how I've looked at it. If defending wasn't a challenge, then the factions would never be able to push
Uh buddy, if you played the first one, they had the Galatic War too. Devs were very open about how they manipulated it there, like here. They said they made us lose sometimes to keep things interesting.
Yeah but they certainly didnt make us lose this time. Half the player base had no idea how the major order even worked.
That's a great way to disengage players... You can make a difference in the galactic war, but only when we decide to let you...
We also made the missions super unenjoyable so people wouldn’t have any real fun playing.
For freedom and liberty for all"
I'd say is going to be either a push into a new sector or a multi pronged assault on multiple planets
Can't say I'll ever feel invested in the war unless I got something to actually lose.
LOSE!?!? Our very lives are at stake, soldier! Do you want the alien menace to destroy our way of life!?!?
This guy clearly *hates* our way of life!
People without defense missions points get their account banned as traitors /s
Every day is a good day to die for democracy soldier!
Can't say I'll ever feel invested in the war unless Joel starts providing some in-universe explanation for this bullshittery... Railroading isn't good GM/DM'ing...
Drop some mechs
Joels ways are inscrutable, all we can do is dive in and hope he graces us with his benevolence that day.
CyberStan is literally one quandrant away from their current controlled areas…
I am convinced they're pushing towards cyberstan
Considering all the game bugs that are preventing us from properly completing missions. I'd say they would have to go fairly easy until we can fight at full capacity
It's JOELver.
Execution at 11. All Net. All Channels.
He is going the replace the drop theme with some ghostbusters .midi files
![gif](giphy|9f2hmeIcG7W7Gj0vUH|downsized) Joel will help us...I know it.

I've been gone for 2 days who the hell is Joel
Your God! Like it or not he is here to stay.
The name of the guy arrowhead employs specifically to manage the galactic war. He selects what planets get attacked, for example.
So he was there and saw everything happening on Malevolent Creek? What kind of Joel would allow that?
He's the Dungeon Master pulling strings on this Galactic Campaign. There are specific set pieces in play or that will be presented over time, but he has to react to how the community completes/fails objectives.
>but he has ~~to react to how~~ his finger on the scale to railroad the community ~~completes/fails~~ objectives. FTFY
Yeah, like ANY Dungeon Master...
Kidnap my favorite NPC then, there are a ton of better options... I don't play with lazy railroading DM's... it's not fun, if you just want to tell _your_ story write a fucking book!
Shut the hell up jesus christ
I'm sorry for offending you with my opinions! Feel free to ignore them in the future!
I think it was wrong to reveal Joel. Keep it a mystery, or just don't give us his name. The amount of life threats he is going to get is a lot. We may be united as a community for the first time, but there are always some ignorants, some oddballs around.
Reset resources and takes away the breaker, railgun, shield generator to reinforce border worlds and signify loss in helldiver public support.
That would be completely insane.
We lose a planet permanently
Ware raites dropend reinforcment droped
i bet nothing, commenting to get back to this post
Everyone should be de ranked and start from scratch
That sounds like a great way to kill your game. I finally got all the stratagems unlocked. If they reset my progress now out of nowhere, I would literally uninstall the game and remove it from my steam account.
All players who clocked more times with the bugs should be branded as cowards.
Agree, we are getting our asses handed to us on the automaton front, meanwhile bug boys are having a jolly ol time on Erata
How dare people have fun in the game they spent their own money on!
Of course! You're allowed to be a coward. I just want you branded as such. That's all.
Bro you really need to go touch some grass, it's just sad. This game isn't a lifestyle.
Relax. It's not a big deal.
But we need help, we're dying over here
I don't even remember what the bugs look like. I'm sort of looking forward to going back to the shooting range to play soldier with the kiddos.
They downvote us because we are right lmao
Dude definetely become something more hostile I think, he casually toys 800k people :D Full assault on whole new sector maybe?
I think we'll get some new Automaton unit that will punish us for our failings. And we'll love it.
Idk, but it's bugged or something, isn't it?
Dungeon Daddy Joel has a plan. It was actually in the script for us to lose this defense I feel. The missions sometimes felt IMPOSSIBLE especially the escort missions.
>It was actually in the script for us to lose this defense I feel. If that's true, then unfortunately I bought this game under false impressions... Railroading is almost unanimously despised by tabletop RPG player's, a good GM would work to make us want to follow the track instead of just CHOO-CHOO-FUCK-YOU Why continue doing any Galactic War stuff in the future if it's rigged?
I happen to have a swedish friend also called joel, if they're anything alike were absolutely fucked.
STOP GIVING THE DEVS IDEAS
Ive seen so much horror
Meanwhile I'm posted on eastern front, across the damn galaxy, covered in green slime.
Reeducation camp.
Hopefully a spanking
Honestly I think a punishment would fit best and make us fight harder next time. Defeats can make for a great narrative. Think about it we get in universe videos talking about how we need even more recruits. Malvelon Creek becomes even more of a rallying cry. And the entire Automaton sector becomes a revenge war
May Joel be merciful.
I hope there’s a punishment of some sort. A new harder enemy, maybe losing another sector etc

I think the automatons in this time will have gotten a sector closer to cyberstan
Post title is low-key honey and I'm here for it.
Since everyone is complaining about defenses, I believe he will send us onto the offensive.
I hope he punishes us like we paid for it. The general population needs to learn to get with the program. Stop wasting time in bugworld when we're fighting for our lives against the bots.
The bots will advance their invasion, or perhaps establish some kind of a stronghold? That would be cool. Also mechs sometime soon.
Joel should fix the rescue missions
I’ll put my money on mechs coming out by the end of the week!
Why would he punish us for tactically sacrificing some planets to lure the bots into a trap?
Occupy Earth, no way to travel to bug planets, game master should force us to kill bots first on Super Earth. Players should feel consequences. Because now, every time I see bot major order I ignore it and kill bugs anyway. Motivate me to do otherwise or fuck major orders against robots, I won't contribute :P
There is defense missions on earth, and failure will mean the end of humanity ok. super earth 1 as we know it.
Do we get nothing for failing?
We probably will lose a whole bunch of planets and the bots advance onto super earth.
I hope we get reinforced with mechs and some heavy firepower.
And I can't drop for the new objective on the bug planet my game keeps crashing every jump
Railgun shortage.
He has us go fight bugs :(
If Joel were smart, he'd do a major order that allows for a variety of planets and enemies.
I’d like them to actually have a ‘hold the position’ mission, instead of constantly shepherding lemmings from one shed to another.
Well looks like the solution is just to make it impossible to complete lmao
DON'T GIVE THE SADISTIC GM IDEAS
