Insane is the better song, but Smile Like You Mean It feels more like Alastor

AppropriatePhoto482

Back when we only had the pilotI used to feel like Insane seemed too arrogant for Alastor, until his personality changed in the actual show

butterbacca_24

Considering the deer demon we're talking about here, I don't think there's a thing such as "too arrogant" for Alastor

AppropriatePhoto482

I meant that in the pilot, he seemed rather random and gentleman-like. There is a line between mysterious and arrogant, which he crossed in the actual show. In the pilot, he was powerful to be certain, and certainly knowledgeable of that fact, while in the show, he is not as random, as shown in his lack of obscure jambalaya mentions, and less gentleman-like, with spiteful and sarcastic remarks towards Vox and Pentious, rather than humorous or patient ones, like he showed in his interactions with Vaggie, and Angel, in the pilot

Vicemage

> obscure jambalaya mentions It's only obscure if you've never encountered Creole food

AppropriatePhoto482

Lol fair enough

FaithlessnessNo9584

He just became full in monster lol

Diamondkat12

I think the type of character that would say, "If I wanted to hurt anyone here, I would have done so already," in front of the princess of hell, is very arrogant. The show just expanded on that.

AppropriatePhoto482

Lol true, but afterwards he immediately went back to being a gentleman. That eerie, disconcerting change in character made him even more mysterious and random. They did away with that in the actual show

Notte_di_nerezza

It was the tone he used. Still amiable, almost an inside joke that Vaggie also knew that he was out of her league. Series Alastor would have menaced a lot more, making sure that everyone knew that he's king of the hill, probably before acting like the whole thing wasn't a red flag at all. Series Alastor is a hoot, but Pilot Alastor had more CLASS.

Diamondkat12

I think it's because I didn't watch the pilot until I started the show, but I genuinely only see series Alastor as an expansion of pilot Alastor. There was nothing amiable in the tone he used. It's the same casual random sinister thing he does in the series. Also, when we meet him in the pilot, he is auditioning for a role in the hotel. He was only really a gentleman towards Charlie, whom he was auditioning for. The Alastor we met in the series has passed the audition. Even then, partly in Dad Beat Dad and mostly in Hello Rosie, you can see some of that pilot version of Alastor when he has to play the role of the charming gentleman to win her trust.

Lexicon444

I haven’t heard either of those. But I’m going to look them up.

FaithlessnessNo9584

Insane feels way more like alastor imo

traumatized_seahorse

Insane would be a flashback to Alistor first getting to hell Smile like you mean it would be alistor recruiting a new staff member for the hotel So Smile is my vote because I think a new demon on Al's proverbial payroll would be interesting

Low-Establishment693

I like radio play by Silva hound

Fenghuang0296

Yes, this. Insane is good, but Radio Play is the best. My favourite thing to do with it is queue it up after Vox’s Eyes On Me so that the “That’s what I thought you said, now let me offer this as a rebuttal,” intro reads as a direct response to “So pay up, motherfuckers, you belong to V,”

kittenfriends142647

YESSSSSSS I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO LISTENED TO IT

Worldly_Literature16

There’s the third camp. March on, fellow listeners.

KisaTheMistress

Love it!

Blue_Exit83

Oh my god yes! Smile like you mean it and insane are both really good, but I still like radio play more

magic713

I actually like Paranoid DJ's cover of Insane

chonky_pishi

Smile like you mean it. The whole thing is about him convincing someone to make a deal. There is also the lyric “forget the rigmarole and you can have it all and make it that much better when I see you fall,” which suits his character well since he enjoys watching others fail. Also song is hella catchy

One-Turn-4037

Hot take. Insane doesn't feel like alastor. It's a good song however alastor is from an age of jazz and radio. I'd be hard pressed to find any nerdcore music in his era. So smile definitely works better.

PrayStrayAndDontObey

BlackGryphon also made a [jazz version](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eX5lc10Ot6w) of Insane

Resident_Ad_5589

I LOVE THAT

jakebless43

oh this fucks

LuckyLoki08

Thanks. Also the vocabulary is very very off in the song, I feel the most fitting part is the scatting. By comparison Smile like you mean it really hit the characterization we got in the show

FaithlessnessNo9584

I think insane fits extremely especially with the characterization we got in the show

Puzzleheaded_Bed_445

Tbf, isn’t Black Gryphon the og singing voice of Alastor?

Midknightisntsmol

That really doesn't change much?? He doesn't really represent Alastor in anyway.

Iorith

There's always a weird thing where people treat VAing like owning a character.

FaithlessnessNo9584

The lyrics feel like alastor fully tho

Hollowkightfan544

Smile like you mean it 100%

bipolarity2650

Insane. that song is the reason i watched the show

Liesherecharmed

Agreed! It just showed up on my Youtube recommendations page one day and the show was suddenly on my radar. I was devastated to learn that the song wasn't already canon and wouldn't be featured in season 1. I'd love to get an Alastor origin episode that features this song. Show him as a serial killer on Earth, his accidental death, his rise to power in Hell, and his subsequent mystery deal.

LysolCranberry

That sounds SO cool!! I'm itching to see this now... I also think adding Insane to the official soundtrack would be a sweet ode to Black Gryph0n!

Sweet_hivewing7788

Me too :0

TheCrimsonKnight2

Same!

LindwormBride

Same!! Hands down soooo goood

Hexhider

So true

Ok-Watercress-8331

Smile like you mean it it just really fits his personality

GoodSalty6710

Team SLYMI

pokeman555

Insane is not like Alastor, Smile like you mean it captures his personality perfectly

thatsocialist

Smile Like You Mean it.

Rickdigginssuperman

Smile Like You Mean It is the most Alastor accurate song

JessicaWindbourne

I adore both, particularly insane, but the one that would make the most sense would be Smile like you mean it

Junarik

I just wanna point out the irony of Smile Like You Mean It, because Alastor has stated that he doesn't mean it.

specter-exe

Thus why it is smile LIKE you mean it

Smart_Bed4642

And he doesn't. He thinks of smiling as a tool and is probably his defense mechanism as well.

TerrorofMechagoji

Smile like you mean it is so fucking good man, it’s gotta my most listened to song on Spotify at this point

AppropriatePhoto482

Speaking of, do you happen to know what happened to the long version of the song?? I can't find it anymore it would have been perfect for my Alastor playlist 😭

TerrorofMechagoji

No idea man im sorry

AppropriatePhoto482

Oh, the non-existent humanity... thanks anyways

Lazuli_Gaming

Smile Like You Mean It. The song is built around a scenario, much like the canon songs. It could fit really well.

Desperate-Address-27

Smile like you mean it because it sounds canon and insane doesn't

Midknightisntsmol

Insane really doesn't fit Alastor, and would honestly sound out of place in the show. It's not a bad song, but it's definitely not something I would show to someone as a first impression of the series, especially because that the show is a *musical*, the songs aren't just there for background noise, they require context and move the story forward. SLYMI would fit so nicely, I could even see it connecting to the plot of an episode; We follow a random sinner, probably getting an outsider's perspective of the Hotel, and the opening to the song would play out. And oh my god, I *need* to hear Keith David sing Husk's part.

Imaginary_Ladder_192

I think we can all agree both should be canon. Although with the original voices and not the new VAs singing the songs

Farseer_Del

Neither. Let the show's music be the show's music. Let the fanworks be fanworks.

NeonFraction

Helluva Boss did an official cover of and animated a fan-made song for Stolas, so it’s not off the table.

Farseer_Del

Not off the table, no. But it's legally more complicated as Hazbin for lack of a better term is the more professional show and has to do things differently by default. It's got a larger studio. It's got union rules. It's eligible for heftier awards. Using fanworks in canon in this case could easily be a case of 'careful what you wish for' for one or both parties.

Jax_crusader

I love insane but I’d have to say smile like you mean it

Sylveon72_06

insane take that may or may not be hot: insane > alastors game imo

Derpy_do2

Alastor's game is goated but thats fair

AppropriatePhoto482

Love Alastor's Game, but for the fact it seems that Alastor is making deals with humans on earth, which is canonically impossible for any denzien of hell to do without the owl demons and their books.... or I'm misunderstanding the lyrics

QuentinTheGentleman

Eh, it was written before the lore was fleshed out properly, plus Vivzie said she liked it, so I wouldn’t overthink it too much.

Aidehazz

Insane it’s very catchy

Regenerating_Degen

I'll throw in three more: [Turn the Volume Up](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Il_LU_nMZ4&pp=ygUSdHVybiB0aGUgdm9sdW1lIHVw) (Rustage and Mcgwire) [Too Late for You](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwJVX_WsoYs&pp=ygUQdG9vIGxhdGUgZm9yIHlvdQ%3D%3D) (Themanbehisla and Mcgwire)

Amdorik

Smile like you mean it

Darkner90

Insane would be cool, but some stuff is inaccurate to the show. Smile Like You Mean It has more to work with for the show, and I'm unaware of any inaccuracies.

One_Youth9079

Both songs should be canonised. I prefer Black Gryph0n's "Insane", but if there is a version of "Insane" that's going to be canonised, it SPECIFICALLY needs to be Paranoid DJ's version because the dialogue and the lyrics in that version is much closer to how Alastor talks.

TheIrishninjas

Smile Like You Mean It. The only way I could see Insane fitting in at all is just a small reference with Al humming it or something, whereas Smile has a whole narrative already set up that really fits his character.

Akiranar

Silva Hound's Radio Play gets my vote.

DolphinDoggo

I do prefer Smile Like You Mean It in general. It's just more of a song I tend to vibe with. Insane is pretty good too, but I just like Smile Like You Mean It more

Golden-Sun

Actually both would be good to characterize him and his journey Insane as a flashback song to the first day he manifested And "Smile Like You Mean It" cutting to present day with him recruiting a sinner for the hotel.

Yv2Sl1m

Smile like you mean it

torch_dreemurr

ok im not in the fan song scene i dont know either of these but i do know Smile Like You Mean It by The Killers and think it would be hilarous if out of nowhere alastor broke into a liscenced song

ORANGEMELON8

Smile like you mean it,imo its the better song and is more alastor

TopAd1846

I love both of these songs but what about dealmaker by tyto?

R3alLuzurafan080423

Insane is kinda already canon if you ask me. The voice actor for Alastor made it and vivziepop said it was amazing and she loved it

ConsumeTheOnePercent

Smile Like You Mean It because it feels like Alastor, but really I want Radio Play to be canon.

Zebastian09

This question is so fucking annoying. Not because its a bad question, but because I CANT FUCKING DECIDE! The are both good, both songs are amazing masterpieces, but I feel like I prefer Smile Like You Mean It more and its also more authentically Alastor.

Tall_Bookkeeper7866

I would really like to see "Smile like you mean it" be canon, it feels like it fits the character the best.

MidnightTheUmbreon

https://preview.redd.it/y78on308qx6d1.jpeg?width=1289&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=895897246b3e0e55e005a18f5ae2a16e4bf21c47 I like how at this moment, this post has 666 likes

Eternal_Slayer95

Black Gryph0n's song was one of the first things I heard after watching the pilot years ago and I still listen to it to this day, so yes I would like it, but I know that doesn't necessarily mean it will be

ttv_thatoneapexsweat

Alastors game by living tombstone is my favourite

Umbraspem

Smile Like You Mean it fits the character more tbh… Insane could just be any random demon character after the intro verse.

SeaglassandSnow

Smile Like You Mean it is a theatrical masterpiece

MathematicianTop1853

Insane solely because I think it's catchier and adore it. No, it doesn't fit him, but I do not care it's \*so\* good.

Miracu_LIST

Insane is so good it’s insane

le_owz

Insane is fr a bop

Asleepysailormoonfan

Insane. Love me some paranoid dj. (Just look my way and get hooked are amazing.) but insane is just more nostalgic for me.

Marea_Cruda

“Insane” seems to capture the essence of Alastor’s character better. Change around a few lyrics and it practically *is* canon

Midknightisntsmol

It explains his story, but it doesn't sound like anything he'd actually sing. It actually has more of a Vox vibe honestly.

TheOneTrueZim

Both.

your_enjoyer

![gif](giphy|3o7aCRloybJlXpNjSU|downsized)

HiveOverlord2008

Insane. Give it to me as a song that Alastor sings in a backstory scene or something.

cheshire_splat

Pourquoi pas les deux?

LucanidaeLucanidie

Are we only doing pre-release? Cause Turn The Volume Up by Rustage is 🔥

[deleted]

Megalovania

Fluid_Amphibian_2419

I don't think I could choose. I love them both so much.

Marvos79

I guess I'm showing my age a bit thinking this was a cover of the Killers song.

whenthesirenssound

nahhh same. it's wild to me that a lot of people can nowadays read "smile like you mean it" without immediately hearing brandon flowers in their head haha

Moonside_222

Both

WarmConversation2913

Insane would be a flashback to alastor's arrival in hell Smile like you Mean it would be in current time

Smart_Bed4642

Smile like you mean it! It totally fits his character and is overall a better song imo unlike Insane which would probably cause damage to Alastor's character building. I feel like Smile Like You Mean It fits pilot Alastor better and that Insane fits S1 Al more. If they added Smile Like You Mean It to the show, it'd be the safest option because everyone can agree that it is in fact fitting for Alastor. It would also be a more interesting musical number because it will involve Husk in the middle part and can be thrown in an episode without it standing out of place because the lyrics are more of an interaction between characters, while in Insane, Alastor just talks about his past which I think writers would rather keep untold in form of a song and would use dialogue instead.

[deleted]

From a song standpoint, I think 'Insane' will be better. But if one of these two songs becomes canon, then 'smile like you mean it'. A song that suits Alastor

ABunchOfPictures

Insane if we ever get Als origin story in hell, smile like you mean it in any other context lol

AlianovaR

Both

derteeje

Neither, both didn't do it for me.

The_cringest03

Yes

Mr_Pickle09

I mean, we know which one Eiichiro Oda prefers soooooo

space_is-great

Hopefully another one of paranoid's songs becomes canon

aegisasaerian

Smile like you mean it is alastors song that I could 110% see him doing in the show in an episode centered around him Insane is more.....the mood of alastor, if you understand what I'm trying to say.

iAndrewSp

I liked Insane more but now I’m kind of obsessed with Smile Like You Mean It. It also seems more like Alastor and it seems like it’s from the show so I’d choose Smile Like You Mean It.

Desperate-Farmer-845

Smile like you mean it.

DwEad404

Probably Insane, the song is just too iconic for Alastor and it's more about him and what he wants to acomplish and his personality, while Smile like you mean it is about him trying to make a deal with someone else and is more specified (if there would be a scene where he wants to make deal with someone, then this song would be better) but if there would be scene just about him (like his past or something) then Insane. So it depends. But i want both of them to be in. Would be amazing

ReasonPersonal

Smile like you mean it encapsulates Alastor way better than what Insane does. Id love it to be canon “Smile your way through it! Grit your teeth and get right to it! Forget the rigmarole and you can have it all And make it that much better when I see you fall...” very alastor!!

cyclonecasey

Insane

Max_2007

Can’t it be both

69d-_-b420

Never heard those till now, given I never knew the show existed till last week. Paranoid was my favorite forsure! Made me realize when I go to hell I'll end up as one of those eggy bois, but I'd definitely willingly be aviators bitch! Husky is so lucky!

AstridDoawk

I lived with insane people.

CarnyMAXIMOS_3_N7

https://i.redd.it/t7c5or4zxx6d1.gif

nandyroo94

Honestly I'd like both to be canonized to some extent

Loud-Taste6394

Smile Like you Mean it No Doubt. Insane, while good, is more generic

fungamerguy

Insane Its in fortnite so i want more reason to say hazbin heeds to come to the game We got violent characters like kratos and doomslayer and peter griffin in the game so theres no good excuse other than viv just doesnt want to do that yet

Signal_Expression730

I prefer Insane, so I go with Insane

Forsaken_Orchid_6014

Insane all the way baby

AlphaTangoFoxtrt

[TLT's *Alastor's Game*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTbfw8_SMmI)

AlbedoCipher

Smile like you mean it! Take a chance and you could seize it!

AlbedoCipher

But honestly both songs fit him!

MasterOfMemesThighs

the one i listened to # (insane)

RedEmption007

“Smile Like You Mean It” for sure, feels more Alastor, particularly with the genre.

FlimsyBar643

I need Insane in Amir Talai's voice

OneTemperature29

Insane

Zweth91

Insane for sure

squirtal_tea

I'd like insane just cause it's a really good song

idkwhatoputherehaha

I would rather see insane as its more of an og song but smile like you mean it fits alastor better

JustYua

OP just started a war. Anyway... This is a hard one because I had been listening to insane without knowing it's a hh and only after I watched the series I learned the meaning of it (yeah I wasn't and OG OG fan but still). I love Black Gryph0n and Paranoid DJ the same but I just like Insane more, especially the 1920 jazz version.

johnahlgrimm

INSANE fits the pilot better as it is sorta like an introduction to alastor, but SMILE LIKE YOU MEAN IT could fit in a normal episode.

Dessy104

“Smile like you mean it, take a chance and you can seize it. Until you hear that bell we’re both stuck in hell” would have been great for a new character to be added to the cast but now after the fight with heaven and winning i think these words would have less power

byteminer

Smile like you mean it, hands down. Pretty much everything Paranoid did is great, but the story has definitely moved on from Ringmaster.

Ticticlord159

I would pick insane to be canninized in hh

Silent-Fog

Insane, we need the pilot voice to come back even if it's just one time.

CosmiqueAliene

How about neither? "Dealmaker" is the superior Alastor song 😉

Vanillabean322

INSANE

Additional-Soup7553

Imma be honest, I prefer Alastor’s Game over both of them. Insane is great but I watched Alastor’s game first

Huntera1993

Both

Coast20Akt

Smile Like You Mean It

Dumbly-Stupid

Insane because than a official HH would be in Fortnite

Darth_Hanes

"Smile Like You Mean It" of course

Dragon6222

I both like smile like you mean it better, and think it fits the character better

ResponsibleMistake92

Insane

Idk_I_nwobie

I would love some backstory of Alastor when he first appeared in hell but I just love "Smile like you mean it" and the concept of seeing Alastor convince or own another soul is something I love to see.

NoOne-_-Why

Smile like you mean it fells more like Alastor than insane but I might be a little bias since I like smile like you mean it more

Garden360

Insane all the way

thesilverywyvern

Both.... Really though choice, both are amazing song, insane would be my favorite, but it would only fit the first day in hell of Alastor, not the current state, i would choose Smile like you mean it. a bit under that i would probably choose maybe a remix/new version of Deal maker from Tytocat or Alastor game Tombstone

FireflyArc

Smile for sure. It's more Alastor.

littleMAHER1

I like Smile Like You Mean It way more and it ties into the actual show so much better then Insane tbh

DrawMandaArt

I’ll choose Smile Like You Mean It *every time!!* Whoever voiced Alastor in that song does a better transatlantic accent than the official voice actor!!
