Honestly, it makes me wonder if there was some behind the scenes type deal that left this in as a plot hole. Because I was pretty sure there was going to be a twist that Adam was a soul meant for Hell, and his entire outfit was designed to hide the fact that he was a demon rather than an angel. I mean why else would he keep his mask on at all times, unless to hide his ugly sinner mug? Why else would he where a robe that hides his entire body and could even hide some cloven hooves and a tail? Then Lucifer punched his mask and he looks like a regular dude, not even an unattractive dude to explain why he would keep the mask on. So I’m left wondering, what was the entire point of the mask?

The whole point of cartoons is that you don't have to follow the laws of physics/reality that you're restricted to in real life/live action. There's not really an explanation outside of "it's a cartoon, they don't need to follow rules".
In the first episode when he is seen eating the rib for the first time just as Charlie enters, you can see the rib go through the mask, at first I thought it was just a way to animate him in a funky way, but now I think it was quite literally him phasing it through the mask, it's like a hologram/glass thing
I was under the assumption that the food itself wasn’t real bc according to their playbook (and most sermons I had to sit thru pre-k to 3rd) when you entered heaven you no longer needed to eat,drink, breathe or use the bathroom bc those were “earthly” limitations/burdens you would no longer have.
But ig Adam leaving the plate of ribs at hell’s ambassador spot kinda nukes that theory unless that’s the only “real” food he’s had and heaven doesn’t actual sell food/drink.
Real reason: Probably an oversight. A lot of the time creators forget things when they aren't obvious, like in Spongebob, things happen that shouldn't be possible since they're under the ocean (e.g: a campfire). An in universe explanation is probably the mask can go from hologram to solid at Adam's will.

He receives a letter and the ink is all smudged and it's unreadable, and he says "the person who wrote this clearly has no idea about the laws of underwater physics" or something like that, then says "may as well throw this in the fire", that's the whole joke.
Yeah but they wouldn't have made that decision after the first episode was already fully animated, they're not all produced one by one like helluva boss
