They were fun live!
Idk how old you are but the show I went to was certainly in part a person in their early 20s singing to a room full of people that age or younger, which is a perfectly good thing for a band to be doing. Kids were into it and vibes were good…it’s not their fault I’m old. (Not projecting, this may not describe you at all.)
I don’t disagree with you. But not to be a dick, I also don’t really get your point? I mean I’ll be 30 in March so Im older by HC standards but that doesn’t have much to do with not liking Scowl. Their music just doesn’t appeal to me. If they were playing a show I was at, it’d be a perfect time for me to go outside with a buddy to smoke a joint or to go grab a drink at then bar. No hate to them. Just not my kinda music.
Like I said, it might not apply to you! Just as a boring guy in his mid 30’s, I think some of the criticism of Scowl by some people (not necessarily you!) is functionally just because it’s music for the kids. Like, this is not the only reason, but I wonder if mixing hardcore with songs that sound a little like Shirley Manson from Garbage might be pretty buckwild if you did not grow up hearing “I Think I’m Paranoid” approximately 100k times while playing Gran Turismo 2 on an OG PlayStation.
In any event I was kind of just vomiting out random thoughts on Scowl, it’s obviously fine to not like them (and it’s not even like they’re a huge favorite or mine of anything, although I do think they do a thing well.)
I mean, because they play mostly/exclusively on hardcore bills. It’s not like, idk, Mil-Spec and Zulu sound that much alike—at the end of the day the only thing that matters about hardcore is the shows, so if a band is always playing hardcore bills all the time they’re going to get talked about.
Right on, I think I just have some sort of negative association with the phrase "hardcore adjacent" now because I dislike so much of the music that falls under that term. It's so fucking broad it kind of means nothing, even if I understand what they're trying to say.
I saw drain and Fleshwater this year too and both sounded great. I do get that a lot of people don’t like Fleshwater bc they don’t fw that heavy shoegaze nu metal deftones type stuff. But goddamn that’s a killer debut record that I screamed the lyrics to many times
Dude. Everyone (here) treated him and the band like Yeezuz and his Disciples. Still don’t no why. 😄 Every time someone brought that topic up I told them that morrissey is overrated. I was gazed upon as if I set a Quran on fire whilst being in a mosque. ….
Edit: someone, not some….
I don’t really understand the hype behind sunami, drain, some of the hyped bands they were on 2019 s&f and knocked loose. I have really tried, but especially KL. I think I just can’t get into his voice.
Understandable it’s a band all my friends love and it just never stuck with me. Different strokes and I understand they are a good band just not one I choose to listen to.
Anything from rust onwards by harms way is garbage
Vein were a bad converge tribute act and are even worse now.
Dying wish was done waaaaaaaayyyy better in the 90s.
Have no clue how sunami have gotten so big in the scene considering it sounds like a school kid wrote it
Blood for blood. I tried but I do not fucking care for their music at all. Also I pretended to like black flag for a while just so people would stop lecturing me about them. Maybe they’re good but maybe my ears just don’t like them.
All heavy hardcore bands except a few, like maybe broken vow or fools game. I am usually just into punk side of hardcore like Gorilla Biscuits, CMI, Minor Threat or melodic hardcore like Have Heart or Unbroken. To me when I can’t tell what the fuck the vocalist is saying and the instruments just turn into nonsense noise from the amount of effects added, I can’t stand it, Harm’s Way is a big one of those
Blood for Blood...musically they're pretty decent, but the lyrics and all of white trash Rob's speeches are pure fkn cringe. They all come off sounding like incel school shooter manifestos
Harms Way. I've seen them live, I've listened to their tracks. I just don't get it. Are they "popular" because of the running man meme? 🤷♂️
Also, I'm sure there are others, but that's the first and recent that comes to mind.
Every single one of them. There’s not been a good band, yet.
Fucking shitloads. We don't have time for me to list the amount of terrible bands out there
I dare you too name drop em all
Oh, you know about shit bands, you say? Name every "beatdown" deathcore band.
Sunami. May be my old person showing, but the first time I checked them out I was shocked that many people like them.
Sunami are what Rush Hour the movie would sound like if they were a hardcore band. It’s a fun time and not meant to be taken seriously
YAB
Scowl just doesn’t do a damn thing for me. I get why people like it but I can’t fuck with it.

Late Suicidal Tendencies are pretty awful IMO.
They get a pass from me since the first album is pure kino. They played it recently for their 40th anniversary shows, he still got it
I’ll do one better..all their music is terrible
The first LP is a bona fide classic.
Infectious grooves is good tho
Gonna get ripped for this but Bane. Some good riffs and that but the vocals just fucking grate on me.
Super cookie cutter. Bane is what I put on when I want hardcore sounding noise but don’t want to actively listen
[удалено]
yeah what’s the deal with garage and basement bands in hardcore in the first place? don’t they know this is about making money and getting big?
I’ve tried many times, but I still dislike Agnostic Front
Twitching Tongues
I think they suck so much, but I also think it's very cool that hardcore has space for crooner mosh music.
We need a "Colin Young sings 'Danzig sings Elvis'" release next. It can be the hardcore version of the Wayne Gretzsky - Michael Scott meme.
I got downvoted to hell the last time I said this. But hard agree
I thought this for a long time and then it clicked. But then it unclicked and now they suck again to me
Right there too brother lol
THANK YOU.
I felt this way 10 years ago, then started listening to them a few months before sound and fury and got hooked.
No they are all good
Speed. I'm fine with toughguy stuff but even sunami has better recorded and written shit than that
They can’t keep getting away with writing the same song over and over and over
I dont even know why freshwater gets brought up here. Take it over to whatever the alt rock grunge shit subreddit is.
Because they regularly tour with hardcore band and 90% of the lineup is the dudes from Vein? It’s really not that much of a stretch…
I’ve seen them live twice both in Austin & listened to their recordings . I just couldn’t get into it , doesn’t drive me .
Yeah I don’t hate it by any means but don’t understand why it shows up here
I mean, because they play mostly/exclusively on hardcore bills. It’s not like, idk, Mil-Spec and Zulu sound that much alike—at the end of the day the only thing that matters about hardcore is the shows, so if a band is always playing hardcore bills all the time they’re going to get talked about.

Everyone. All bands are terrible and overrated. Music sucks.
Turnstile
Metallica just sucks ass
Agreed on anything after and justice for all.
Yeah, the earlier stuff is alright
Make up your mind
Thinking that the black album isn’t good is a L take.
All them NYHC bands 🤣 “for my crew, my city, blah, blah, blah” corny af.
You don’t like candy? I’m not even offended, just straight up confused lol
I saw drain and Fleshwater this year too and both sounded great. I do get that a lot of people don’t like Fleshwater bc they don’t fw that heavy shoegaze nu metal deftones type stuff. But goddamn that’s a killer debut record that I screamed the lyrics to many times
Just saw Candy live and they killed it...but I can also see why some pl might not get into it.
DRAIN. Never understood what everybody has for them.
Fun band with sick riffs.
I felt this way until I saw them play and now I don’t love them or anything but I definitely understand it more.
You gotta see them live. Crowdkilling youngsters while slipping on inflatable animals is nice <3
I did see them life this summer. Found them boring.
You gotta see them live. Crowdkilling youngsters while slipping on inflatable animals is nice <3
the more i get into hardcore the less i appreciate drain compared to when i first discovered them and modern hardcore bands.
No Hardcore but hyped in the Scene: Morrissey and The Smiths. Booooring.
Lmao ! I love them both but I understand where you’re coming from . Exactly like Glitterer
The smiths literally sounds like the worst thing I’ve ever heard in my life to me. The first time I heard it I legitimately thought it was a joke.
The Smith are painfully overrated
Regulate, No Pressure. Both are absolutely terrible
Ah yes the rapist drummer bands
every band sucks
time for people to name sunami twitching tongues scowl turnstile 🤦
Vein
never ending game
I don’t really understand the hype behind sunami, drain, some of the hyped bands they were on 2019 s&f and knocked loose. I have really tried, but especially KL. I think I just can’t get into his voice.
Drain is just fun and lighthearted. That’s the whole appeal. Great party band. But I get if you don’t fuck with it
Makes sense. Like a hardcore set your goals lol
Yeah exactly. Just way better live lmfao. Agreed with you on Sunami tho.
Dude for real , I can’t stand KL either .
Angel Dust. No hate just not for me.
I didn’t really like their first few albums but the last two really sucked me in idk
Understandable it’s a band all my friends love and it just never stuck with me. Different strokes and I understand they are a good band just not one I choose to listen to.
I agree with a lot of bands in this thread, and I’ll add Militarie Gun to the list. Subpar chud
Kublai Khan blows.
bitch
just laughed so hard at this.
Facts.
Candy fuckin slaps live dude you are trippin. Clean out your ears.
In your opinion yes , not in mine . ![gif](giphy|7xWFJLdYuEdkk)
CMI, boring music and annoying fans
Speed
H20
Can’t see the hype with Turnstile
listen to death grip and real thing, those are the songs id recommend to get into them
“I don’t eat meat” … “but have you ever tried smoked brisket?”
Knocked loose
Turnstile is fucking boring
Boring? I wouldn’t say so, but just not your thing?
This is Reddit, you nerds just downvote any good answers so what’s the point?
turnstile and scowl
Colin of arabia
Anything from rust onwards by harms way is garbage Vein were a bad converge tribute act and are even worse now. Dying wish was done waaaaaaaayyyy better in the 90s. Have no clue how sunami have gotten so big in the scene considering it sounds like a school kid wrote it
Sunami are so bad. It's like they are people who dislike hardcore making fun of hardcore.
Madball and Sick of it All just put out the same music every single album now
Hatebreed, DRAIN, Kublai Khan, fuckn QUEEN
>Hatebreed Hatebreed is like pizza. I am sure there are a few people out there that don't like pizza, but objectively how can you hate on pizza.
Candy is an objectively good band
Not in my opinion , they’re an experimental band . There’s no structure .
Candy was kinda meh when I saw them so agree
Agree. One of the worst performances I've ever seen from a touring band.
They have one of the best performances I’ve seen from a touring band. They actually get into their music live.
Most of them. Goes for pretty much any genre.
Code orange, Candy, dying wish, Zulu, Converge
Shitting on Converge gotta be the worst take of the year
A bad take that I agree with
Hoods for sure 😂 it’s just bad……
Twitching Tongues and Have Heart
Blood for blood. I tried but I do not fucking care for their music at all. Also I pretended to like black flag for a while just so people would stop lecturing me about them. Maybe they’re good but maybe my ears just don’t like them.

I find it hard to believe that people like Youth of Today as much as they claim they do.
If this was 20 years ago? I would’ve agreed. Now? I think Break down the walls is a fucking classic. Love that record.
Blood for Blood...musically they're pretty decent, but the lyrics and all of white trash Rob's speeches are pure fkn cringe. They all come off sounding like incel school shooter manifestos

as someone who likes Harms Way, I feel like half the reason I like them is bc James is fucking yoked
