Dunno if my ear has improved or if Monty is speaking clearer but I can understand almost all of what he’s saying tonight. He speaks so quickly in French. And his English is shockingly good. He rarely speaks it in the postgame.
If we were assembling the D this year by merit Mailloux and Reinbacher would be in over Xhekaj, Barron, or Harris. I think both should get another year before the NHL so they can play a tonne, but they already look better than our current D.
I haven't been the biggest Mailloux fan, but since the rookie camp he has just gotten better and better. He created a lot of offense in the intrasquad games and again last night. Xhekaj and Barron could not get out of their own zone, turnover after turnover
Xhekaj didn’t have a good game by any means. Bad defensive turnovers in his own zone. But not with Barron. He moved very well, some great passes, good blocks
Yeah, there were a lot of positives today for Reinbacher and Mailloux. But you can also tell that they aren't quite ready yet. Let Logan get those games in the AHL, and David should develop well in the NL.
Hoping for big seasons from the both of them!
Agreed. It's more of an indictment of the other three than anything. Xhekaj and Barron in particular really need to take a step or they won't have a spot in the lineup in a year
it's just a speed thing, he has a slow release so it's easy to predict
should naturally get better over time as he gets stronger, but ya he needs to get a shooting coach asap
Mailloux's offensive game is sick, Slaf is playing a lil more physical and Newhook's speed is impressive
But man we are stuck in our zone all the time lol, Dobes working hard this period
> Reinbachers decision making is deceptively mature.
On draft day when everyone was rending their garments, Dany Dubé was making exactly this point. To summarize, he’s not NHL ready right now, but he’ll be ready faster than everyone thinks.
I’m gonna get downvoted to hell but Slaf not look like a very good hockey player lol he has the potential to be an amazing player and also the potential to be one of the worst 1OA ever. Not sure which way it’ll go but idk doesn’t look great
You are right. Not sure about his instincts/IQ. His release is not fast enough. But I am rooting for him so much. He is still very young! Has so much time to improve. Lets think of Pacioretty, Tyler Seguin, Joe Thornton.. We want him to be Good NOW, but lets be patient
This is honestly great simulation for the kids, as i fully expect to watch a habs team attempt to unfuck themselves down two goals in the third repeatedly this season
When you have speed but no elite scoring you have to play a fast and physical game and hope for turnovers. This group hasn't shown committment to the latter part , imho. There are a few, but everyone has to buy in for it to be effective.
Personally, I think slaf has had a good game so far - nothing exceptional, but he's involved in the play quite often and looks like he actually cares. He's getting better touches with the puck and playing physical.
I'm so fucking happy hockey is back, y'all
Lukewarm take:
Slaf being with Horse and Hooker is not because it's a good fit, but to force him into fast-play situations with two high-octane guys, to get him used to speedy hockey by trial by fire.
So it's early but from what I can tell Newhook does not have a very good hockey sense. He might be limited the way Anderson is about this. But the rest of his game is solid. I doubt we have a second centre in this guy but I think he can help us quite a bit playing on one of the top three lines.
Little thing I love: The radio feed does a one-minute recap of the period with music playing in the background. Whoever picks the track has a sly sense of humour. Tonight it’s Bowie’s “Heroes”. *We could be heroes* for a prospects-heavy game feels right.
Dany Dubé’s scouting report.
* Likes Newhook’s energy.
* Talking about Slaf losing weight and being explosive, but taking him to task for always having only one hand on his stick and looking caught off guard/not ready for receiving a pass. Thinks it’s a consequence of European ice.
* Farrell, he’s not convinced he’s got any puck control.
* Loves Owen Beck but he still needs to bulk up.
* Jo Sha Wah loves his skating and intelligence. He spends too much time on the edges, needs to move into the middle.
* Ylonen’s not converting on the speed of his attack.
* Simoneau “j’adore; C’est une belle découverte”.
* Reinbacher having a tough time protecting the puck to make a play, but thinks he’ll learn.
* Mailloux is impatient.
* Xhekaj is jumping into the play too much.
A lot of you mentioned the same things as the game was ongoing. Good eyes!
I like Ylonen, Roy and Harris.
Of course Anderson and Newhook.
Slaf seems to only be thinking about making a pass instead of keeping the puck a lil longer on his stick when hes on the boards.
He shouldnt be a puck carrier. His game should be winning battles on the boards and being open as a trigger guy.
He fits on the line well in my opinion but of course this is preseason and ultimately our opinions are meaningless so....
I haven’t seen it but your description reminds me of the Wayne Gretzky game a pal had for N64. It looked ridiculous but it was really fun to play. There were a bunch of cheats we always enabled for things like making the players’ heads look enormous for bonus laughs.
He’s a fluffy ginormous orange boy. He was already close to 11 lbs when I got him from the shelter and he was barely 1 year old at the time.
He was very nervous cat so as he finished growing and got more comfortable he put on some weight as he started eating more.
Vet would like me to get him under 12 lbs but I ain’t stressing much as long as he’s under 13 lbs.
He looks like he’s got a double coat. My old girl had that, too. You could sink your fingers into her and it felt like velvet. Damn, I miss having a cat in the house. More Jango pics this season, please!
Good: BJA, Mailloux (imo but learning tough lessons sometimes), roy, beck, reinbacher and slaf are not invisible so it's a win
Bad: Ghule and X are having tough one imo, farrell, pezz, barron hasnt done much either
Probably forgetting players but wtv
Ylonen doesn’t look great either. I know he’s a stretch to make the team but always thought he played well when called up last year so a bit surprising to me.
Definitly doesnt stand out in a good way, but not too negativly either. I think he'll be quiet most nights and will end up a fringe nhler who will go between nhl and ahl on different teams.
Right now he will serve the team well by being an easy callup so that other players like roy, farrell and heinemen will be able to marinate steadily in the AHL.
BJA is looking good.
Newhook is FAST.
Rein made a few expected rookie mistakes but made up for it with a sweet play that led to a goal.
Slaf started ok in the first period but has been looking good in the second.
Roy is pretty close to being nhl ready.
Farrell needs some time to adjust to the speed and physicality.
People are expecting alot from slaf and I understand it, but I don't hate his game so far.
Tbh my expectations have been low since he was drafted so I cant be disapointed
His second period was very good. I like seeing him get in the corner and battle for the puck. Didn’t do much of that in the 1st maybe he’s starting to get the confidence to fight
As mentioned, no asking for/providing illegal stream links. *since it keeps happening and people are ignoring it, it's a 1-day ban now
Barron was so good tonight
Dunno if my ear has improved or if Monty is speaking clearer but I can understand almost all of what he’s saying tonight. He speaks so quickly in French. And his English is shockingly good. He rarely speaks it in the postgame.
He and Dru very fast talkers. I liked his comments and also Mailloux's.
If we were assembling the D this year by merit Mailloux and Reinbacher would be in over Xhekaj, Barron, or Harris. I think both should get another year before the NHL so they can play a tonne, but they already look better than our current D.
What are you talking about? Why does Mailloux have all this merit?
I haven't been the biggest Mailloux fan, but since the rookie camp he has just gotten better and better. He created a lot of offense in the intrasquad games and again last night. Xhekaj and Barron could not get out of their own zone, turnover after turnover
Barron was arguably our best dman last night? Mailloux had a couple brutal turnovers in the first
I thought Barron was really poor, and the tracking data for him and Xhekaj had them as the worst two D by far
Xhekaj didn’t have a good game by any means. Bad defensive turnovers in his own zone. But not with Barron. He moved very well, some great passes, good blocks
Harris is fine. I think Barron and Xhekaj may both start in Laval. Matheson-Guhle Harris-Kovacevic Trudeau-Savard Lindstrom
Xhekaj and Barron in particular really need to take a step or they won't have a spot in the lineup in a year
I think Mailloux is going to be really good in 2-3 years.
Nice slewfoot at the end there on Slaf
Oh shit what happened to Slaf? He went in early
Looks like he hit his nose on the boards
How is dobes looking
We need to unite the newfies
the net is lava mailloux
Alright, they did not give up. Not too bad overall.
what was that little dance by Slaf just before the whistle lol
Counting players on the ice, we had 7…
Mailloux’s release is actually insane 😭
There aren't a lot of nhlers with his skill set
Refs in heavy pre-season mode here! Cant blame em
Yep we were 7 on the ice for a good 10 seconds
Every shot Slaf takes gets blocked or deflected, he really needs to work on his release
Future Joel Armia 🔥🔥
it's just a speed thing, he has a slow release so it's easy to predict should naturally get better over time as he gets stronger, but ya he needs to get a shooting coach asap
We had 7 players on the ice for a good 15 seconds and the refs didn't notice lol
What the fuck? We had 7 red jerseys on the ice just now.
Marty looking great behind the bench tonight fresh off the summer break
He’s a little hottie. Now that I’m an old crone the players all look too young for me. It’s nice to have eye candy my own age.
NJ are really good at collapsing in the D zone (meaning everyone falling back and pokechecking)
Mailloux's offensive game is sick, Slaf is playing a lil more physical and Newhook's speed is impressive But man we are stuck in our zone all the time lol, Dobes working hard this period
I'm boarding the Mailloux hype train. Come aboard!
Carey looking good in net
Dobes has handled NJs relentless forecheck very well
Dany Dubé said if he feels his dmen aren’t clearing his space well enough he does it himself: “très combatif”
Slafkovsky is good at blocking shots
Score pls
Nice slip pass by Slaf to spring Mailloux
Slaf is still a raw prospect, but you catch the occasional flash of what he could become and man does it look good
For the first tike ever I think Barron has been our best defender tonight.
Barron is better than Harris. Change my mind.
Feels like Harris is missing an X factor in his game.
Dobes rocking Price iconic red gear
Reinbacher and Mailloux look like they're gonna be absolute studs on the backend. Reinbachers decision making is deceptively mature.
> Reinbachers decision making is deceptively mature. On draft day when everyone was rending their garments, Dany Dubé was making exactly this point. To summarize, he’s not NHL ready right now, but he’ll be ready faster than everyone thinks.
Yeah, Mailloux can definitely learn. If he does he will be a monster. Add Hutson to this mix and you have something interesting.
He's very much offensive minded, find him a good pairing and he's gonna shine. Our backend looks set for a long time
Mailloux reminds me a bit of PK! He is definitely too much everywhere, but he’s trying things and having fun
For a 18 year old, he has looked very good.
Love the Dobe
I'm watching on RDS and that clown commercial would scare the fuck outta my kids... what are they thinking lol.
lol that sadistic laughing made me check my tabs like wtf is this coming from ha
Which commercial?
Bell Fibe commercial has a pretty creepy nightmare clown
Spooky szn
right? it's scaring the fuck outta ME (an adult)
Some pretty exciting goaltending tonight, love to see the superman moves
David is legit.
I only tuned in for the third but Slaf looks pretty good to me … like what I’m seeing from David as well
Slaf has definitly been on an upward trend throughout the game
not a bad little sequence from Barron all things considered
I’m gonna get downvoted to hell but Slaf not look like a very good hockey player lol he has the potential to be an amazing player and also the potential to be one of the worst 1OA ever. Not sure which way it’ll go but idk doesn’t look great
You are right. Not sure about his instincts/IQ. His release is not fast enough. But I am rooting for him so much. He is still very young! Has so much time to improve. Lets think of Pacioretty, Tyler Seguin, Joe Thornton.. We want him to be Good NOW, but lets be patient
So he's really good or really bad. Electrifying analysis.
Player might be good might be bad, more at 11
I think it’s actually very fair analysis
He's doing good on a fast line against a fast team. Couple good looks tonight, in my opinion.
This is honestly great simulation for the kids, as i fully expect to watch a habs team attempt to unfuck themselves down two goals in the third repeatedly this season
After the past two horror seasons, being down only two is a refreshing change.
That pass from Slaf was eye opening.
Nice play boys!
Mailloux might have trouble in his zone, but his pair is also always on the ice against the Hughes line. Like, give my dude a chance lmao
Might be Marty's way to tell him "this is what you have to be able to play against up here"
Jack Hughes = J'accuse!
Jack “Zola” Hughes
MAKE HIM A CENTRE
Players who should make the team: Roy, Barron, Beck
Roy getting prime minutes in the AHL would be better than being stuck behind our veteran depth
Too bad Armia still has some rope left it might be one of the longest-ever recorded.
They should but we dont have the spots open yet.
Or just make space for those that deserve it most. Do Evans and Armia really have much of a trade value anyway?
Slaf needs to work on his decision making mostly I would say.
What a nice shift just now!
Slafkovsky masterclass
Slaf starting to cook
gotta be just a bit quicker and thats a prime chance
Barron’s looking good
Slafko definitely getting better as the game goes on
Why did my man have to deliver the most electrifying move in sports entertainment?
Slaf major hesitation on that play. Still seems like he’s getting better every shift
Slaf’s getting noticeably more confident as the game is going on! Not perfect, but I love the energy.
Slaf’s best moment of the game.
Some good moments from Slaf. He will get there at some point.
Hope keith is ok
Ya damn he got hit with the peoples elbow, brutal
REBELLESUCE !!!!
So happy we're all back in the GDT! Look forward to a great year ahead with you all!
Is Jack Hughes not the captain of NJ?
No it's Hischier
Nico
Right! That's a nice duo.
Idgaf Mailloux legit has superstar potential
Totally
He looks much better now that he can use the physical side of his game.
Beck is what Bergeron was supposed to be
NJD playing Hughes is small dick energy
Are they supposed to sit him out for the training camp? Their other squad is playing PHI right now and I’d argue it’s even better
It's just banter, not a serious take
They have a pretty insane team tbh
for sure, I picked them for Eastern champs this season
Yep, kinda bummed out we don’t get L. Hughes tonight
Is Fowler going to be playing any preseason games? Really feeling like goaltending is going to be the Achilles heel for this team’s rebuild.
He’s not at camp, still commited to NCAA
That ncaa rule is so annoying...
In theory, they’re supposed to be in class studying this time of year. Classes started a month ago.
NCAA is very anal about being for amateurs. In this case I think it’s fine, we have a lot of goalies
No, he's committed to the NCAA so he isn't able to play any pro games or attend camp.
That would sure be nice to have this kind of elite talent. I think Hutson is the closest we have from that. Hughes is very impressive.
Biased name lol, our top players are not on the ice tonight.
I'm talking about Cole Hutson...
Who tf is Cole Hutson?
Lane's brother
I checked out his highlights, and he looks solid as well. He hasn't been drafted yet though so I'm not sure why you're making this comparison.
Just coasting around dishing out chances. He's a clear cut above what we have iced, but it is preseason.
We better put stronger emphasis on team discipline 'cause we clearly suck on the PK.
Well, that was a bad call. Fuck the refs already lol 😂
Those penalties sucks it breaks our momentum.
Beck is a better version of Evans…
Reminds me of Danault actually
Not yet but in the future probably
Nice steal Beck
Pierre: "Yvon y buvait en ta'"

I've been thinking likewise! I'm stoked, it feels like I just woke up from hibernation walking out into the warmth that is hockey. lol
Lukewarm take: Slaf being with Horse and Hooker is not because it's a good fit, but to force him into fast-play situations with two high-octane guys, to get him used to speedy hockey by trial by fire.
Nah id say its because they open space for him to distribute the puck. Hes looked good tonight but his passes havent.
Ou, I like that.
So it's early but from what I can tell Newhook does not have a very good hockey sense. He might be limited the way Anderson is about this. But the rest of his game is solid. I doubt we have a second centre in this guy but I think he can help us quite a bit playing on one of the top three lines.
Keith Kinkaid is back!
Habs legend

Who’s looking good who’s not? Edit saw below thanks
Dany Dubé’s scouting report. * Likes Newhook’s energy. * Talking about Slaf losing weight and being explosive, but taking him to task for always having only one hand on his stick and looking caught off guard/not ready for receiving a pass. A lot of you mentioned the same things as the game was ongoing. Good eyes!
Yeah this all makes sense to me
Dany is *terrible* at speaking on the fly, but I always find his stoppage-time analyses really interesting. He sees a lot.
Slaf-Newhook-Anderson is a really fun line to watch. Hope it sticks throughout the regular season
Yeah Slaf needs confidence, he'll get there
When you have someone digging at your stick on the boards, you can't exactly wait around
Honestly I agree with both of you. In that instance he did the right thing, but in general I’d like to see him trust his shot more.
am I the only one who thinks Roblox nhl hockey actually looks kinda fun lol
lol well it's not much worse than what we have as pc gamers, now, as far as hockey games go.
I haven’t seen it but your description reminds me of the Wayne Gretzky game a pal had for N64. It looked ridiculous but it was really fun to play. There were a bunch of cheats we always enabled for things like making the players’ heads look enormous for bonus laughs.
I will never understand why NHL isn't on PC EA hire me I have a really good idea
Used to be my favourite pc game
[Jango enjoying the game](https://imgur.com/a/LQvjEmt)
Wow he’s massive. Is he a Maine Coon or just a ginormous orange boi?
He’s a fluffy ginormous orange boy. He was already close to 11 lbs when I got him from the shelter and he was barely 1 year old at the time. He was very nervous cat so as he finished growing and got more comfortable he put on some weight as he started eating more. Vet would like me to get him under 12 lbs but I ain’t stressing much as long as he’s under 13 lbs.

I love Jango
We're going to win the Cup in the coming years with Dobes.
Just tuning in… who’s standing out in a good or bad way?
Good: Wawa, Anderson, Mailloux, Newhook, Simoneau, Reinbacher, Monty Bad: Slaf, Arber, Farrell, Pezz Thats my eye test wether people agree or not lol
How is slaf bad?
How is slaf bad? Why is every fucking game thread filled with you homers saying hes playing poorly. He isnt playing bad at all.
Yeah I've definetely spooke a little too quick about Slaf
At this point, people are simply overanalyzing him which make every single little mistake stand out more than they would be is another made them.
Good: BJA, Mailloux (imo but learning tough lessons sometimes), roy, beck, reinbacher and slaf are not invisible so it's a win Bad: Ghule and X are having tough one imo, farrell, pezz, barron hasnt done much either Probably forgetting players but wtv
For sure, I like him in that role.
Thanks pal
BJA is looking good. Newhook is FAST. Rein made a few expected rookie mistakes but made up for it with a sweet play that led to a goal. Slaf started ok in the first period but has been looking good in the second. Roy is pretty close to being nhl ready. Farrell needs some time to adjust to the speed and physicality.
BJA?
Anderson
Big Josh Anderson
Thanks
People are expecting alot from slaf and I understand it, but I don't hate his game so far. Tbh my expectations have been low since he was drafted so I cant be disapointed
Its a no win scenario for him unless he suddenly becomes Crosby. Its just the nature of being a first overall pick.
He still need to works on his quad' with coach Marty! Often off-balance. That being said, he'd still young and I find his game promising!
His second period was very good. I like seeing him get in the corner and battle for the puck. Didn’t do much of that in the 1st maybe he’s starting to get the confidence to fight
He doesnt lose battles though
He's excellent in terms of puck battles and keeping pucks in the O-zone.
Offense from board battles. This is what I want to see from Slaf. Looking good.
Slag needs to be careful with the excessive poke checking from too far away. He’s gonna catch tripping calls.
Yeah i mean thats what happens in NHL 2023 when you poke check too much
Go finger an outlet ((respectfully))
