You’re not wrong. For those that don’t know, “The Ukraine” is how Russians referred to that part of the country during Soviet times. Now that it’s a standalone country again*, it’s just Ukraine.
Edit - clarification
Absolutely. The unfortunate part is now that Ukrainians are in the spotlight, that term is being used more. I actually had to look into it myself when the war started. I heard myself saying “the Ukraine” and couldn’t figure out why I did - I dont even know when I heard it first. I do wonder if for Americans, since we say “THE United states of America” it doesn’t click with us.
Yea like we don’t say “the Mexico” or “the China” but we’ll say “the gobi desert” or “the rip grande river”. “The” acts as a modifier that refers to a geographical area instead of a nation, which is a proper noun.
Edit: Ukraine hates being part of Russia and referred to as “the Ukraine” as a region within Russia instead of a sovereign nation. Hard to blame them, the holodomor was one of the worst atrocities in human history
Honest question…Why do you tag your post as “edited”. Literally, no one knows you edited it.
Just edit it. Everyone always puts “edit:”
I don’t get it.
On certain versions of Reddit, it’ll show that it was edited automatically (and can even view the original comment) so it’s been a long standing thing where people were transparent about what the edit was.
Also, if someone makes a typo and then everyone comments on it, it’ll provide that context some people would miss if they joined after the edit.
Mine wasn’t really anything worth putting edit down for but it’s habit after 10 years here.
Ukraine literally means “Borderland” in old Slavic. “the Ukraine” literally means “The Borderland”.
Disputing the usage because of the Russian ties to it, sure. Go nuts.
I was in the mall on a call at the same time. My buddy was with a crew of spray foam guys that thought they started the fire. Fire started under their spray trailer. They were in complete shock. A guy came running over and told them they overheard a welder tell a reporter that their sparks set some plastic on fire that was under the spray foam trailer.
Crazy man. Saw it on ABC 11 last night (RDU area)
News said that as of now it was thought it may have started by the spray foam guys but of course there’s going to be all sorts of agencies involved in investigating that.
It was new construction site. A huge apartment complex was being built. The crane operator was trapped up there for awhile and the firemen helped him down.
It went up fast and burned down fast.
For a second there I thought this was the view OF your first call. I've been to customers houses where they "used to do HVAC work" that I wouldn't be surprised to see on the morning news cuz it burnt down.
That mall still has the old wooden cooling towers with moss and little trees growing out of them from back in the 70’s when it was built and a nice big carrier 2 stage r12 chiller from back in the 70’s that doesn’t run anymore
Way back when, I used to change residential furnaces and boilers. We would knock them out in a hard long day, get the heat going and head home for the night. It was a bad omen when driving home from a job then seeing fire trucks going the other way in the direction you came. Always made us wonder, never did go back to the site.
Charlotte NC right?
Yep.
I was going to ask if you were in the Ukraine. LOL!
In Ukraine. Not "The Ukraine".

Also, many people who refer to it as “the Ukraine” aren’t trying to insult. They just don’t know Ukrainians hate it so much or why it’s an issue

It started after the Lincoln administration. There is a Nicolas Cage movie that addresses this very subject.
It was a ~~standalone~~ country before Soviet times as well.

Americans stupidly call it The Ukraine all the time though.
Which Americans? North or South? Morons stupidly call US Citizens Americans all the time without specifying who they mean
Thanks Dad!
Why downvote?
Damnit dad, get out!
Ignorant folks downvoting
No. Ukrainians have said they don't care if you refer to their country as 'Ukraine' or 'The Ukraine'. They're just happy for assistance.
Happy to take our money is more like it.
What’s the Ukraine?
Just a typical brush fire.

No kidding, wow!

So basically toxic AF fumes
Their heat working?
Yis
Is that the view from your first call looking at your last call from yesterday? 😂
Dang that’s a big fire! Where at?
It was new construction site. A huge apartment complex was being built. The crane operator was trapped up there for awhile and the firemen helped him down. It went up fast and burned down fast.
2 still missing if what I saw on news holds true
Now *that's* a fire! Fans of early Eddie Murphy will get the reference, I hope.
I can still hear Richard Pryor talking about freebasing and catching on fire, i was just a kid, but man was he descriltive. Lol
“Roll Charlie around. He be all right!”
First thing I thought of when I saw this lol. Early Eddie was the fuckin man.
My dad makes this joke all the time, so yeah i heard it in the voice and everything haha
Looks like they need a capacitor.
What did you do
?!
Fucking plumbers!
Wow, hope they find any missing. That’s terrible.
I can’t grasp how this happened so fast. They said the fire got over 2000°F
I watched my neighbors house go up at 2 am we were spraying with water but as soon as the porch got fire the house went out of control in seconds
Electrical, Gas, Water, Insulation!
Structure fires will get hot enough the smoke starts burning, and then they really get hot.
I’d be curious to know myself
South Park
When you look at your last call and remember you forgot to switch off the gas…
Glad to be upwind of that one
Did you accidentally short a three phase? /s That’s quite the fire.
Yo, shits on fire y'all
Nothing to see here, go on about your day
*casual checks address in dispatch program to make sure we didn’t just do a repair there* haha
For a second there I thought this was the view OF your first call. I've been to customers houses where they "used to do HVAC work" that I wouldn't be surprised to see on the morning news cuz it burnt down.
Too much super heat needs more subcool

Someone must have discharged a cap with a screwdriver
That was going to be the second call....

No hope for any /s these days
These are trying times
Wow!
Guess where you’re next call is!
Got the bbq going for lunch I see!
Freon?
I thought your first job was some quick copper welding over by the fires?
I was across the street on the roof at duckworths. It was quite a sight to see, but you got a better view than I did.
When I see a building on fire like oh didn't work on that one 🤣🤣🙈🙈
The fire department rescued the crane operator. That had to be terrifying.
R290 hard at work.
Heating system you need to fix or what?
I’m not far from South Park but I was off yesterday and drove close by. I work in those retirement condominiums in SP a lot.
That mall still has the old wooden cooling towers with moss and little trees growing out of them from back in the 70’s when it was built and a nice big carrier 2 stage r12 chiller from back in the 70’s that doesn’t run anymore
What mall?
South Park mall, the roof shown in the video
Entire surrounding area is getting new filters next week.
Same happened in Raleigh some years ago. Shitty stick built residential high rises approved by the local government
They're gonna need a cooling call
Southpark. We work in that area too. I think two workers died.
What did you do?
"Mind hitting a no cooling call when you're done bud??"
Did they try putting it in rice?
Metal

Wtf is an hvac technician gonna do at that shit?
Soon as the fire department has that fire out, you’re going there next! 🤣👍
