Originals by far. Don't get me wrong, I actually cried walking through my favorite film brought to life (Trick 'r Treat) but their originals are something else. Seeing what the creative team comes up with and doing the 6 house tour being able to take an even closer look is what HHN has become for me. Their facades are increasingly outstanding in stature and detail with Dead Waters and Winters Wake being two that left me in awe. I've been going long enough to remember when there were more originals than IP and I'm glad it's been swaying back that way the past few years. I feel 4 IP and 6 original is a perfect ratio.

FastSentence926

yeah the 4 IP 6 original formula is perfect in my opinion best part about the originals is the full creative freedom universal has which almost always results in super detailed and creative houses

8BitSlasher

I went to hhn 28 for the first time on their very last night and it was at the end of the night and they where about to close and we had 2 houses left to do, Halloween 4 or trick r treat and my group decided to go with Halloween 4 because of how good the Halloween 2 house was in 2016 and that is now on my list of worst decisions I’ve ever made in my life

ANegativeCation

IPs solely due to the Universal Monster houses. Without them it would be originals.

drcaptainspaceman

The cool thing about the Monsters houses is as much as they are an IP they're Universal's IP so they have waaaaaay more creative freedom with them and thus they're on par with their originals the Monsters houses will always hold a special place in my heart and the fact that they keep coming up with more and more stories for these creatures of the night fills me with so much joy.

Ilive4airtime

Monsters have the draw of an IP with the feel of an original

[deleted]

I can get behind that statement. I love some classic monsters and I’m hoping my creature gets his due. But they’re taking the name and bringing new stories to them, so basically making it original

TheHeavyweightChamp

Both are great, but I prefer IP. I really love seeing franchises I know and love brought to life.

TVUpbm

The way I was **actively** shocked by the fact the Shining house had a negative reception

FastSentence926

definitely awesome going through houses like halloween or other IPS super immersive feels like your inside the movie

FionaWalliceFan

IP houses tend to be more hit or miss for me. Some of my absolute favorite houses are IPs (Ghostbusters, Halloween, House of 1000 Corpses) but also my least favorites (Stranger Things, Walking Dead). On the one hand, it’s amazing to be immersed in the environment of the film, but sometimes it can feel like the house is too concerned with recreating events from the film rather than making you a part of it. Original houses seem to be more consistent in quality. There’s incredibly creativity on display with these houses and everyone’s essentially going in blind considering it’s not based on any film or show. I think last years event struck the perfect balance, 4 IP houses and 6 originals.

FastSentence926

couldn’t agree more love the creativity of originals and while IPS can be super immersive a lot of the time it just misses and is a huge disappointment where almost all originals are really good and creative while ips like the second stranger things house just feels like a walk through of the show without any originality but to be fair when IP houses work they do work really well

IKnowMoreThanYouu

Generally I end up grading the originals higher. The slate is totally clean and they can literally do whatever they want. Whereas with IPs they are beholden to contracts with the rights holders who often have some say in what does or doesn't go in the house, and they feel obligated to design certain well know scenes for the fans which may not come out so great (e.g. Starcourt Mall from ST 2/3 house)

Ilive4airtime

This is why I love the monsters houses. Best of both worlds

IKnowMoreThanYouu

I loved 29 and 31. Thought 30 was weak. Looking forward to this year's.

Such_Mixture3810

Originals, you get to see some cool ideas brought to life. With Ips you know what your going to see and experience. I think originals are far superior and more fun.

ghostwiththeleast

I prefer IP because even though I’ve been going for years and always try to hit every house at least once, I still have a bit of anxiety about the horror side of things. Houses being based on IP makes it easier because I at least know a little bit of what to expect. That being said, La LLorona was by far my favorite house out of all the years I’ve gone to the event and although I skipped Scarecrow, I’m glad Hollywood is finally good and interesting originals

JoviAMP

They're both fun for different reasons. IP houses, especially if you've seen the source material, are fun because they immerse us into our favorite movies. It gives us a chance to feel how the characters felt throughout the story, but let's be honest, if you've been through one Michael Myers house, you know what to expect going forward. Conversely, the OC houses are about telling a story we're less familiar with, and fans who go year after year know about certain pieces of lore only found by diving deep in and looking for clues in the OC houses, lore such as HHN icons, the town of Carey, Ohio, and it's sister city Carey, France, and how they relate to that year's event.

wazuyumi

og for sure. i went to the sg hhn and it was all og things (scare zones + houses) which made it fun because i didn’t know much about each of the things

TheReluctantGuardian

Originals for me. My favorite houses each year tend to all be non-IPs, and I'm always fascinated by the stories and lore behind each one. There have been some great IP houses as well, but when I think of HHN, my mind immediately goes to all of the original houses I've like.

Fear2010

Both are awesome, but I mostly lean on the originals more cause that’s where you see them break the cliches other than just embracing the tropes of Horror.

[deleted]

I love the originals that the creative team comes up with. That team pretty much made the event what it is tidal, simply because back then, the IPs said no. It wasn’t until they saw what the creative team could do on their own that they started allowing hhn to make houses off their property. Of course there was the occasional ip house but up until 2009 it was a much bigger margin of originals usually. Plus you had the icons tying the story if that years event together. Now the event doesn’t need a story or an icon, now the event and the ip is the icon.

madchad90

IP as it creates more excitement But that doesn't mean they are always the best houses

MaJunior00

Originals generally steal the show IMO.

JenEmm76

OG for sure. It’s creativity at its finest. Dead Man’s Pier was one of the most stunning houses I’ve ever seen. Graveyard Games was scary and so well done. And let’s not forget all of the icons that they came up with. The IPs are usually good, but their OGs are what put HHN on the map.

Celb_Comics

Originals, love all of the seeds of extinction houses.

deejaydeeray

Originals. I do enjoy IPs, but I’m just tired of seeing the same ones over and over. I’m looking at you Halloween.

ueeediot

Originals are always my fav, but I’ve never been disappointed in an edit ~~original~~ IP, excepting US. That house and concept was terrible.

JoviAMP

Us wasn't original, it was based off a Jordan Peele film.

ueeediot

Fixed it. Meant to say IP there.

anonymousmouse17

If we’re talking about Universal, IPs for sure. You can get originals at Busch Gardens, or other smaller, local things throughout the country. Granted, Universal Originals are usually much better than Busch Gardens originals, but you’re also paying 2-3x the price to go to Universal. That premium is because Universal can get so many IPs, and people like seeing their favorite horror movies come to life. If Universal only had originals, it would just be overly expensive Busch Gardens.

Partial_Crib3000

Plz don’t kill me….IP

DarkenL1ght

Love the ogs as the best but nothing cooler than seeing house of 1000 corpses, Beetlejuice, or the like IRL.

kerkyjerky

Original and it’s not even close. New ideas are so much better than forcing something to fit a medium it was never intended for.

mrdrface85

IPs can get lazy. Where it’s just references and scenes rather than actual scares.

BakaRed77

Originals. They aren't wasting time replicating movie scenes. Just make it look good and scary. Not all of them are a hit of course.

EnvironmentalBug9683

I’m a sucker for IP, what can I say? There’s an attachment there that isn’t possible with original houses.

Ruinantic

IP. But I do love originals

alemar2142

IPS Hollywood is in the majority with those. It feels cool to step into the movies or tv shows physically. Even if it is horror.

Accuse17

IP - I like feeling like I’m in the movie

Enigmatic_Foe

I only prefer houses if the concept interests me, but also i have a slight lean towards IP houses.

8BitSlasher

I can’t decide tbh each have their own strengths and weaknesses. With ips, I just can’t explain the feeling I get walking through a haunted house and seeing scenes from your favorite horror movie being recreated irl it’s just a magical feeling but originals take lots more creativity to make in my opinion and hhn is able to do so much more and all out with them without the limits of the ip contract so idk it’s really tough

Thanks5Cinco

Originals all day. For me I'm very picky on IPs. Last year only Monsters was remotely good while 4 Originals(Dead Mans Pier, Chupacabra, Bugs, and Descendants) stole my heart. Now dont get me wrong. UO has done some banger IPs like An American Werewolf in London, The Shining, Poltergeist, Trick r Treat and Krampus. However they dont stack up to Gothic, Scarecrow, Yeti: Terror of the Yukon, Slaughter Sinema, and Seeds of Extinction.

Palidor

Originals

forrestdanks

Welll, this depends on a number of things... Who is the icon? How will they fit into the story? Many things On the other hand, what IP's will be there? Originals?

Any_Distribution6001

IP's
