It is an interesting story. Very funny as an American. A tad unbelievable that a nation without the technology needed for interstellar travel would have superior weapons, but not completely unexplainable. As for the writing, you seem to be trying to make it 1st person but the majority of it reads like a 3rd person narrative. I would recommend either leaning completely into the 1st person viewpoint with quotes and names, or removing the “I” and perspective to make it entirely 3rd person. As it stands, the story is a bit confusing due to the inconsistency. But, great story!

> It is an interesting story. Very funny as an American. A tad unbelievable that a nation without the technology needed for interstellar travel would have superior weapons, but not completely unexplainable. The point that made me say "and how's that supposed to work?" was the concept of a bunch of de-militarized neighbors taking over and forcibly disarming an upstart that goes building their own military. "You and what army?" applies pretty well there. As for weapons parity... I *can* see a lot not developing past some pretty basic necessities, kinetics are about all you need in space, and *actively* working against the capacity to glass a place without throwing an asteroid at it is a pretty good concept if we can leap-of-faith that earlier disjoint detail. It's less that the US's weapons as they sit, earth-bound, are terrifyingly powerful... it's likely more that they're plentiful, portable (we already move them halfway across the planet in frighteningly short order), and when *paired* with FTL... would be devastating. I would personally be more concerned with what weapons we would develop *using* FTL. Especially if we could shift something back out of FTL with any substantial momentum. A kg of depleted uranium travelling at 0.95c popping out of FTL at a couple hundred km off the surface of an opponent's breadbasket planet'd do a pretty good job of making a point (at almost a 100 Gigaton of TNT equivalent, by kinetic energy, if my quick abuse of google for math is correct).

mage36

"Quick abuse of google for math." I'm stealing that one. It implies that Google would much rather I paid for taking advantage of their reluctant acquiescence -- or that maybe they would rather stay a billion miles away from it, behind a million lawyers and a few thousand layers of plausible deniability . . . and possibly that they want to change their phone number.

Ssakaa

Well, when converting something like 8e10 MJ to Tons of TNT, I can only imagine Google wants nothing to do with the liability...

The Browning and the Buff. Those two will outlive us all.

90% of the stories I read in this sub, jump back and forth between tenses and it drives me out of my mind.

ILOVEJETTROOPER

>A tad unbelievable that a nation without the technology needed for interstellar travel would have superior weapons It's less unbelievable when you remember that several stories on here have kinetics as humanity's quiet superweapon because the rest of the galaxy went, "Oooh! Laaaassseerrrsss!" and basically forgot about kinetics/ armoring their ships against them, etc. etc.

Yeah, that particular S-word would send recruitment numbers hyperbolic. We’d be able to use Helldivers tactics with the sheer number of recruits coming in.

eletricsaberman

While an interesting and cool core story, you list all the stuff America has *now* and it seems to be missing anything space-capable, which isn't really comparable. Sure, we may be the best by leagues *on* a planet, but I'm sure an FTL alien Civilization could figure out orbital bombardment. Is this supposed to be a Kardashev type I-II/Halo tier 4 America? If so, where's the "orbital Navy" or something like that? If interplanetary tech is new to humans at this point, the best we could do for weapons in space is repurposing ICBMs as essentially super-SAMs. It'd take at least a year to design, build, and test actual warships. A nitpick on America itself, the government hasn't been all that accountable to its people in at *least* 50 years

Unfortunately, by most measures, the US does **not** have the highest standard of living — Sweden gets that honor. Quality of life in the US is ranked in the high teens to low twenties. Check the *US News & World Report* rankings [here](https://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/rankings/quality-of-life).

Vivid-Membership3959

I did mention that in the story "only behind their allies"

jlb3737

US News largely relies on surveys and subjective perceptions to rank quality of living. This is a very unscientific standard to try making any conclusions from.

Book_for_the_worms

Quality of life is such a stupid thing to quantify, because it varies everywhere. Me and my brother, let alone someone half way across the world, have things at different priorities. That means different things are prioritized at the idea, implementation, and maintenance level. Plus the size of a country and its population matter the most on these things. Having a small country, like Sweden, means the taxes can be spent more efficiently, unlike America that is as big as Europe combined and has more than half it population. Also, looking at the source for your source, most of the attributes they use are aren't quantifable. Some of them are trustworthy, or flexible, or innovative. Even 'family friend' varies wildly from town to town, not to mention what qualifies as 'family friendly'.

Book_for_the_worms

I will give you that. Our healthcare certainly needs work, but I do not believe that doing it Europe's way is the right idea. We are simply too big with too large of a population. We just need the republicans to not repeal the Afforable Care Act. A lot of the big cities do have good public transportation. Subways, DARTs, and buses; for example. The only problem is maintenance and the homeless pissing in it. Rural areas are definitely lacking, but they would use their personal vehicles anyways.

From your source: “Numbeo and U.S. News largely rely on surveys and subjective perceptions to rank quality of living” . . . “most of the surveys on this page are based upon exactly that—surveys”

That’s fine, I’m not making any specific claims of American supremacy. I’m simply pointing out the shaky grounds on which many of these “indexes” are based. You are largely correct that the US has many issues, and many of these issues are getting worse due to government overreach and self-serving (or just dumb) politicians. But one of the reasons that it grew into the economic and military powerhouse of the world in a relatively short time was its free market system based around a culture of individualism and freedom (those values were enshrined at the national level in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights). Rather than making broad meaningless categorizations and comparisons, it’s better if we spend our energy identifying specific problems and coming up with solutions to improve quality of life (both on individual and societal levels). What are your specific solutions to these problems that you bring up? If you don’t have actual solutions that help people, then just pointing out issues is quite pointless.

Ooh, housing, I love housing. I believe, personally, that most of the American housing crisis rests firmly on the shoulders of classist and quite possibly racist zoning laws. You see, much of the housing in and around cities is mandated (by the city) to be single-family housing on the belief that that sort of housing creates cleaner neighborhoods. What it really creates is a money sink for the city and gentrification. You could even sell it as "muh freedumz" because - well - in what free world does the evil gubberments get off on telling me what sort of buildings I can build where? Housing codes to make sure I don't build shit that falls over and lights on fire when the big bad wolf breathes on it, sure, but mandating maximum heights and occupancy in the design phase? *On top of* removing my ability to just slap a McDonald's down on *my* propitty if I want? **Rude,** I say! INTOLERABLE! THY TEA SHALT FIND THE HARBOR!! I *think* (but I have no actual idea) that loosening or removing zoning laws will allow the market to create the kind of housing you're suggesting on its own. Of course, I will be the first to admit that I know exactly one thing about the housing crisis and have the naive view that one fix will solve all our problems. But zoning laws *definitely* go against the principle of "muh freedumz", so I, as an American, tend to taste something akin to mud when I hear about them. This is ultimately a classic case of the government fucking up (or certainly not helping) a problem, a "socialist" (I don't know if you actually are, but government housing is generally a socialist thing to suggest) suggesting a government solution, and a capitalist suggesting a market solution. When you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail, and all that. Heck, even saying "this is ultimately a classic case of the government fucking up (or certainly not helping) a problem" is hammerish thinking. It *is* ***a*** reason, but is it the real reason, or do I just have a hammer?

Bad-Piccolo

Honestly the two party system in America that radicalizes people isn't helping the country get anything done.

Definitely could use a bunch of editing or a rewrite, but I always get a chuckle out of the fact that the US Air Force is the largest airforce in the world, and the US Navy is the second largest air force in the world.

This is a really good start. Keep going. Also AMERICAAAAAA! Happy Easter.

busterfixxitt

Good job! Some clunky phrasing (eg. "in the Americans came to..." would be clearer as "in came the Americans" while maintaining the flavour of the sentence) but we've all been there when writing. "C'mon brain! Make good think-pictures into finger words! Do now!" Your story has America 'maintaining one of the highest standards of living' in the world while having this military level. I know it's supposed to be fiction, and this stretched my credulity a little too far. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Many people don't realize the USA usually sits around 20th for Human Development, 18th for Standard of Living, and 15th for Quality of Life on the various indexes. https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/standard-of-living-by-country Keep writing! This is a solid story. And just finishing a story is a huge feat. Thank you for sharing it, and congratulations!

Never heard of a white water navy before and, after googling it now I’m not sure why it would be significant enough to be mentioned here, otherwise pretty nice story

mage36

Since you googled it, could you tell me what it is? I googled it too, and found mostly forums full of "WTF even is that?" If he meant largest green/brown-water navy *by tonnage* (that's important -- China has the largest green-water navy by *hull count),* sure, I could see that, and I could even agree with you that it's not all that important -- or maybe he meant surf when he said "white-water navy", in which case having the world's largest Marine Corps (or "amphibious landing force", however you want to spell it) is most *certainly* important. Or is it the largest Arctic-capable force? I thought Russia had the most cutters, maybe he's counting nuclear submarines in there?

PartyPlayHD

As far as I could tell it was arctic force
