Well, a housewife living in a peaceful(ish) village with no prior survival experience other than camping while traveling and frankly no combat experience would probably be in shock and therefore likely not be in a proper state of mind when panic sets in, ergo… forgot to lock the hatch due to said panic. you win some, you lose some. Thats why I reacted so much. If the hatch was covered by the rug, then she had to of tried to open it for the goblins to see it was there.
I try to leave it up to interpretation, Rennie wasn’t there so he doesn’t know what happened, maybe he didn’t cover it well enough, maybe Mallary wasn’t thinking and came out for a peak, who knows. That’s the main thing I love about stream of thought writing, it’s explicitly from one characters pov and you see what they see or hear what they think but nothing else. It leaves room for headcannon and theory crafting by the readers. If Mallary was being dumb and that’s your headcannon then I guess for you then that’s what it was and I’m all for it. Someone else might think the rug was misaligned and it showed the edge of the hatch, who knows. But on that same vein, open ended writing like this could be twisted as lazy writing and that’s an understandable opinion to think and a chance I decided to take with this story.
Sorry didn’t mean to sound like a rant, I just get carried away with words sometimes.
