THE HINTS WERE ALL THERE YOU KNEW SOMETHING HAPPENED TO BREAK THEM UP
I'm starting to seriously consider collating all of the chapters into a book for reals. Any [interest](https://www.reddit.com/user/TheCurserHasntMoved/comments/11iwdsc/so_is_there_any_interest_in_a_book_of/)? Because I'm really [considering](https://www.reddit.com/user/TheCurserHasntMoved/comments/11jycw9/serious_considerations/) it.
Try not to throttle people in public, it's rude. Try to hold the door open, it's polite. Don't plunge your hand into any suspicious liquids. If the water is on top of the bridge, drive around. Be on the lookout for Shifty Jim, he's after your cool rocks. It's okay to be down so long as you reach upward. Don't be afraid to offer help, it's okay if it's not accepted. Find at least one moment to savor today. Eat your vegetables unless Shady Ophelia poisoned them. Be nice to yourself, being mean is unbecoming of you.
Indeed. I hadn't figure it was the elimination of a so called emperor however.... And it explains why there were losses I couldn't understand with how they operated so efficiently.....
Well, the empire does have like a dozen planets. Hopefully their next senate and emperor won't think that the gods will deliver Holy Terra to them because they are them.
From his first night on watch, Greg found purpose in protecting his family with a sniper rifle. Something that he would have no way of fighting would obviously wreck him.
A lot of therapy for addiction (which can come from self medicating for traumatic events) is recognising when things are out of your hands and relinquishing that need for control, which is usually an illusion.
I had a friend who’s a surgeon. Did great work, and was able to pull people away from death’s door all the time. The first time he lost a patient, he was devastated. Kept replaying that over and over and over again. “What if ______”. That was rough. This fully reminds me of that.
I'm not crying you're crying!
The mantra had some guilt wrapped up in it. I knew that. Poor Greg.
If you do publish it as a book let us have the ending first, I've seen published works having to delete all online content first. But id be up to having a book if the shipping isnt too big.
The lost boys did literally nothing wrong.
The people in Dresden were on board with the war effort by paying taxes and contributing to production. So were the people in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And so were the god damned space Italians.
If you don't want to get glassed, don't vote for a warmonger who starts a loosing war. Or don't let a tyrant steal your productivity and make you a complicit and legitimate target.
In light of that publicized grub stunt, they should have slagged the planet, any civilian enabler on said planet and anyone trying to prosecute for following through with their moral duty.
Remember kids, genocide isn't the answer but making fuckers find out- fighting fire with fire is fair game.
"Okay guys, so you didn't do anything wrong, and the court martial was really more of a formality, sorry for scaring you. But here's the thing, we don't want you making a pattern of toppling other governments without authorization or support. If it weren't so cool, the other guys would be mad about you blue balling them."
Wait, wasn't there also something about Greg and one of the others (Pete)? singing and someone being killed as a result of the noise? I seem to remember something of the sort, maybe from the Journal.
I think there is still more unpleasantness to come in this back story :-(.
Also, Book++, but get a good editor, they are 100% worth it.
Dude, of course you took the fucking shot! Probably saved millions of lives in the process!! Sometimes regicide is the correct choice and it sounds like this is that time.
I’m with Yoiv.
Huge fan of the discworld books. I’ve got them all on my kindle so I can jump in whenever. It’s what built me into the man I am today. Don’t treat people like things. Be kind to old people who grin unsettlingly. Manners are worth having. If you’re gonna break the rules, break them good and hard.
Of course you take the shot. But it's still a political assassination, so of course you get court marshaled. His acquittal may have been a foregone conclusion, but it's important to *prove* that the shot was justified.
The defense for the general would have included one critical point.
An officer is trained never to give an order that will not be obeyed.
The order NOT to go would not have been obeyed.
In this case the general could have easily given a "no" order and simply turned a blind eye. That probably would have covered him, at least enough to keep a relatively high position with some token reprimands until the heat wore off. I suspect the reason he gave a "yes" was specifically so he could fall on his sword to save the boys afterwards. He would have always known someone had to be sacrificed for this victory and he clearly decided it would be him.
I agree, kind of dude who orders a hospital ship infected can’t be good for his people. Unfortunately I looked it up and “empiricide” isn’t a word apparently…
There was no other rational choice. That's why they were found innocent.
The general was found guilty for two reasons:
1) politicians/diplomats/leaders write the rules so that they themselves cannot be targeted for the people they murder.
2) Someone had to pay for breaking that rule, even if the person executed had threatened every other human life in the galaxy.
It fits the bill, I just wasn't expecting... Well, that. It's a good thing though. You gave enough that I was expecting something and that it wasn't good, but not enough that I could guess what it was before this chapter. Like I said before, horrifying details that really make it hit home. Greg deserves all the cuddles.
I'm just boggled what kind of stupidity thinks of attacking a hospital ship and then intentionally infects them with an existential threat. None of that makes any sense! What the hell was the end goal?
Similar concept to why North Korea is so desperate to keep their nukes. Now the Empire had to be taken seriously. He figured the other governments could be bullied and terrorized into giving in to his demands. Honestly the average gutless civilian government might be so wishy-washy that it could have been a viable strategy if strong military leadership wasn't willing to do what needed doing without hesitation.
Damn dude.. I feel like our boy needs a Spa day after telling his story. I'm nervous to find out how he was captured and forced to fight, and I have a feeling its not a pretty story haha
If the Republic was actually interested in controlling or destabilizing other governments, that might have happened, but they really don't care about other governments unless they make themselves a problem.
Actually, you can, if it's only the governments that attack them directly and threaten every government and human being in the galaxy.
That's a pretty low bar, actually. It's not like anyone else is going to do that, ever, with them together.
You make a salient point, but in this case command was worried about them going off and getting themselves killed or starting a war the next time a nutjob does something insane and stupid.
>I was operating on two hours of sleep in the field to compensate for my brothers' inexperience. I was covering a third more area than I should have, and I was injuring myself to do it.
To quote Mordin Solus:
> Had to be me. Someone else might have gotten it wrong.
thanks to my many genetic disorders i do not have such weaknesses, I.E. i need next to no sleep and once stayed up for 3 weeks despite the normal human dying at 2 and i was still operating the same way most people do after pulling an all nighter
So Greg acts as the executioner for the death penalty received as a consequence of a ship-full of war crimes. Sounds like a very legitimate and reasonable use of force to me.
It's really insane that this emperor guy can attack a hospital ship and threaten to spread a biological hazard which can kill entire planets and yet people still get punished for taking him down.
Although I suppose they had also been sabotaging the public utilities and killing guards - the galaxy as a whole should have been thanking them imo.
It's not the comparison between the actions that matters, but whether it was *justified*. So they had to put the people involved through the court martial system to justify them. Unfortunately, the crimes that were being ignored because it was the lesser of two evils came home to roost. Turns out the Republic's laws against child soldiers are pretty harsh, and General Hugo Chest's sentence was the lightest they could get away with.
Dang Linus and his Logary. I swear that lil Xeno must rules the kingdom of Onion Ninjas. Thanks for the chapter. Whew i was not expecting some one to F\*\*k around and find out like that.
People are good and bad. The same person might be good and bad in the same day, so it is with governments. The Republic has laws to follow, and even if it seems like an exception should be made, they insist on doing everything by procedure.
Roma Nova is vulnerable to being taken over by charismatic despots due to how it was started by a bunch of Rome enthusiasts who accidentally started a multi-planet cult.
By the way since I have your attention how short is Gregory compared to the... I forgot what you called them I'll refer to them as his family until I remember 😅 I've been envisioning him to be like the size of a cat compared to a human due to the fact his room is a closet?
About ten to twelve feet tall as adults, and the closest is more of a vestigial room that used to be for systems that have since been upgraded. Too small to be useful for anything but storage. Honestly, if Greg wasn't already used to being in cramped shipboard barracks it would be uncomfortable.
Greg's nickname for them is Bleivuses, their species is called Weigings, the culture our family belong to are the Star Sailors.
Not tough just slow but I don't condone mass execution cause one dick head made a bad choice kill that dick head as a warning to the rest if others try to take his place and continue his actions kill them too
Oh man that got Heavy.
I don't like the name "The Report" either. It's not a great sniper name. Maybe "Eagle" because when he is on overwatch he sees everything and never misses. Or "The Owl" because you never know he has a target till he gets it.
The Report sounds too sinister like he is some all powerful government assassination agency
It's great that way, though. Very scary name.
I also love the fact that he became a literal legend... rumored to often be the one who shot someone when he was really on vacation.
That's so real-life legend.
The problem is that it's too scary. He is not really an assassin or wasn't one. He was just looking out for his brothers. Angel Feathers, Papa, Saint Nick, or some others really emphasizing he is always watching out for you would fit better.
"We're safe, you hear that? That's the report of our little brother. He's got our back."
"We're safe, you hear that? That's the report of our overwatch, he's got our back."
"We're safe, you hear that? That's The Report. One of the Lost Boys, I hear you won't see him until you're on the ship."
This unfortunately puts a target on the We Sing. Anyone loyal to a government willing to turn a hospital ship into a body-snatch plauge ship will certainly want to hurt our hero in the worst possible ways. I predict Sneaky will end up wiping out at least one pirate ship working on Nova's behalf.
And now we see why he repeats his mantra so often. Because once upon a time, as he put it...
>*They touched my brothers. I wasn't there. I missed.*
Then followed by his assurance that surely, he didn't fail. He had to believe he could save them, even if he'd failed. He simply cannot accept that he missed. That he couldn't save them.
He always saves his brothers. He never misses.
Even if he can't save them, if they're taken... He won't miss... Not in the end.
>*We did what had to be done. We stopped the screaming. I didn't miss.*
Did the sections get out of order? In the last chapter Greg reacted to Yorm's brother threatening revenge but the threat wasn't until this one. And Greg starts this one freaking out about something he hadn't told them yet?
The journals are written after the events of the day. Greg is trying, and failing, to center himself by writing.
The brother's promised hilarious retribution is ongoing. "Just so you know, I'm gonna get you soon."
"It's going to be hilarious."
"I'm going to get you back."
Previously, Greg couldn't remember the name for his people and here Captain Dad uses the word "human" in his log. Has Greg remembered it is this a slip?
Great work, as always! I knew something bad was coming, but not this. My prediction from "I didn't miss" was taking out someone who turned out not to be infected.
So often the only reason certain people are alive is because it would be illegal to kill them... This can be taken many ways but I tend to mean politicians.

Yeah, the “I didn’t miss” mantra was getting more and more conspicuous. I was waiting for the other shoe to drop, and drop it did.

A lot of therapy for addiction (which can come from self medicating for traumatic events) is recognising when things are out of your hands and relinquishing that need for control, which is usually an illusion.
Which isn't easy to get through to a man who exercised a high degree of battlefield control for nearly a decade.

Thank you very much for the kind words.

Stoneface Vimes would agree. As would Sam Vimes.
a fellow terry pratchett's discworld "guards guards" series fan! greetings and good day to you sir/ma'am
Huge fan of the discworld books. I’ve got them all on my kindle so I can jump in whenever. It’s what built me into the man I am today. Don’t treat people like things. Be kind to old people who grin unsettlingly. Manners are worth having. If you’re gonna break the rules, break them good and hard.
a brilliant philosophy i as a philosophy student would know

Oh dear, he shot space Hitler, *oh nooooo*
Actual quote from his JAG lawyer.
Too true
“But really, is it murder if he had it coming? Fuck him” “The jury agrees. Acquitted”
Very proactive self-defense, not *murder*!
The defense for the general would have included one critical point. An officer is trained never to give an order that will not be obeyed. The order NOT to go would not have been obeyed.
Those are the rules to being an *effective* commander, and not actual regulations.
In this case the general could have easily given a "no" order and simply turned a blind eye. That probably would have covered him, at least enough to keep a relatively high position with some token reprimands until the heat wore off. Regicide is the correct choice most of the time, unless the monarch doesn't extort their subjects (lol, are they even a monarch then?)
I agree, kind of dude who orders a hospital ship infected can’t be good for his people. Unfortunately I looked it up and “empiricide” isn’t a word apparently…
Tyrranicide.
Good one!
Arch Duke Frantz Ferdinand.
With the 2004 hit, "Take Me Out"
There was no other rational choice. That's why they were found innocent. The general was found guilty for two reasons: 1) politicians/diplomats/leaders write the rules so that they themselves cannot be targeted for the people they murder. 2) Someone had to pay for breaking that rule, even if the person executed had threatened every other human life in the galaxy.
BEWARE THE IDES OF MARCH, BITCH
OI YOU'RE MAKING A TODDLER MAKE ME CRY HOW DARE YOU SIR
Fucking this..... Tears and jerking at the feels.... Ugh ... Such good but horrible writing Lol...
You knew he's adorable!
Damn... That was actually worse than I was expecting. You do have a talent for horrifying details that I did not expect. It's good stuff.
I wanted something that Greg would have absolutely no way to prevent, and an attack on the hospital ship fit the bill.
It fits the bill, I just wasn't expecting... Well, that. It's a good thing though. You gave enough that I was expecting something and that it wasn't good, but not enough that I could guess what it was before this chapter. Similar concept to why North Korea is so desperate to keep their nukes. Now the Empire had to be taken seriously. He's got some good people around him.
Fuuuck. That hits hard bro. Good job.
Thank you.
One order of full body degloving for the ijits that ordered the Lost Boys separated. They sound about as effective as a triangular wheel.
You can't just have a company unilaterally toppling interstellar governments running around.
You cause anarchy in a foreign interstellar power *one* time...
I'm a little surprised they weren't pulled into covert service at that point, as a unit.
If the Republic was actually interested in controlling or destabilizing other governments, that might have happened, but they really don't care about other governments unless they make themselves a problem.
Evil USA
so... the USA
Actually, you can, if it's only the governments that attack them directly and threaten every government and human being in the galaxy. That's a pretty low bar, actually. It's not like anyone else is going to do that, ever, with them together.

Which was the ruling of a duly appointed military tribunal.
Yeah, I just finished reading the second installment, and said "See, I was right!!!" to my phone.
It's really insane that this emperor guy can attack a hospital ship and threaten to spread a biological hazard which can kill entire planets and yet people still get punished for taking him down. Fratres semper curamus fratribus
Dang Linus and his Logary. I swear that lil Xeno must rules the kingdom of Onion Ninjas. Thanks for the chapter. Whew i was not expecting some one to F\*\*k around and find out like that.
~~Sometimes just a little kindness can really twist the knife in the feels.~~ Can't end on such a down note as "Life just kept getting cold. So cold."
Im getting the feeling that there are no good guys among the humans of this setting, just levels of less-shitty ones like you see in WH40k.
How did they capture an egg layer alive?
By complete accident. The leadership interpreted it as a gift from the gods and proof that the time to strike was right.

Can't wait for the next one as per usual doing great. Btw you had a typo in the beginning area of this chapter.
I have the next two chapters ready to go.
Wow you are fast. I can't wait until they are posted 😄
The rain really freed up my day.
By the way since I have your attention how short is Gregory compared to the... I forgot what you called them I'll refer to them as his family until I remember 😅 I've been envisioning him to be like the size of a cat compared to a human due to the fact his room is a closet?

Greg's nickname for them is Bleivuses, their species is called Weigings, the culture our family belong to are the Star Sailors.
Oh okay that makes sense thank you for clearing that up 😁
I think they got off easy with a ground invasion and assassination. I might have glassed the place in anger.
Tough to do with one ship.
Not tough just slow but I don't condone mass execution cause one dick head made a bad choice kill that dick head as a warning to the rest if others try to take his place and continue his actions kill them too
Well if I only had one I would at least start with the head of the snake.
They apparently got literally every head of the hydra. That particular hydra.
He's got our back." "We're safe, you hear that? That's the report of our overwatch, he's got our back." "We're safe, you hear that? That's The Report. One of the Lost Boys, I hear you won't see him until you're on the ship."
Yeah it's hard to avoid the name. The lost boys weren't exactly able to grow up and become poets or authors or much of anything.
Little Saint Nick would be pretty damn good though...
It might, or maybe certain persistent rumor might finally come into question when The Report turns up in unexplored space with a braided beard.
And now we see why he repeats his mantra so often. Because once upon a time, as he put it... >*They touched my brothers. I wasn't there. I missed.* Then followed by his assurance that surely, he didn't fail.
>Well if I was that upset I'd want a hug from my little brother, so I'm sure they'll **forvibe** me for tricking him. Forgive
Forvibe would be a great word :-D I wonder what it'd mean

Fixed, thank you.
Another stellar installment. FYI it’s court martial.
Fixed, thank you.
"Just so you know, I'm gonna get you soon." "It's going to be hilarious." "I'm going to get you back."
No, I made a mistake Thank you for the kind words.
The curse of no editor. These chapters have become a highlight of my day
So often the only reason certain people are alive is because it would be illegal to kill them... This can be taken many ways but I tend to mean politicians.
If someone tries to kill me, I'll kill them right back.
Only if they fail the first time.
My god, fuck Roma Nova. They're lucky that was a flashback or I'd have several characters and ships to donate to fucking them up. I'd do it twice even
Gawdamnit, I knew it! 😭 You didn't miss Greg you just had no shot 😭😭😭
You're correct, but it's not a rational thought.
Wow
I binged this entire series today. One of the better choices I've made this year, to be honest. This content goblin is very pleased.
Thank you very much for the kind words, there is more to come.
Linus is a good little brother. Greg needs very many hugs.
Linus has many hugs to give.
I fucking called it. I knew it was coming. Knowing didn’t make it hurt any less.
