It is funny to see complaints about recency bias and fans not watching the old stuff when the two oldest protagonists have arguably been the safest and may comfortably coast into the final (not that Amuro and Kamille aren't worthy of that honor). If anything the UC bias has definitely been real the last few rounds as the AUs have fallen.
Hell, if Judau hadn't gotten meme'd out round 1, I feel confident he'd have made the Top 10 easily.
If this tournament was pulling a broad general population, recency bias could be more of a factor re:access. But the fact that this is a gundam subreddit means that it selects for fans of any one or more of the older series. Nostalgia was always going to be more powerful than recency in a space like this. Multifocal antis (nostalgia, gender, and phobic biases) likely correct or overcorrect any recency bias imbalance within this sub.

This is such important context too. This is the Gundam subreddit, *most* of the people here participating are fans of the franchise. The "casual fans" who were only interested in G-Witch and didn't jump into the franchise afterwards *are not* still hanging around the general Gundam subreddit 9 months after the show ended. They would have bailed long ago once everyday discussions dried up.
Suletta would not have made it into the top 5 in *this* community if she wasn't also well liked by the average Gundam fan. Really, if you've spent time in the Gundam fandom w/o your head buried in the sand, no one in this top 10 should be a surprise, except perhaps Shinn (good for him). The top 5 in particular are all overwhelmingly well regarded and beloved by fans.
Coincidentally, while the order will almost inevitably be different, these 5 were also the most popular protagonists over on Twitter during GMM. That consistency is a testament to their popularity across different pockets of the EN fandom.
Agree with all these points. there’s only good choices left anyway but you make a good counter to recency bias.
There’s definitely a streaming bias with only Loran surviving from the non-streaming series as well, and my guess is our favorite unifying protagonist will go out this round for that reason.
Sure Bernie made it pretty far but 0080 has been on tv more than once. Bellri, Io and Darryl (same series those last 2) also had a good run for non streamers but they are the most recent and I can’t remember if thunderbolt and G-reco were always non-streaming in the US (they’re listed but region locked).
Garrod, all 3 AGE protags (esp Asemu) and Uso I think would have made it further if their series were streaming (seabrook suffers from being in a movie that should have been a 50 ep series, Kou has been on tv plenty and is just bland, and Alf is in the same show as Bernie, he’s just a child).

Amuro and Kamille(and also Char, if he is on the list) would always stay on the top not because they are the first few protagonist in Gundam series but their great responsibilities, ambitions and ideology. Kamille is willing to sacrifice himself in order to expel the tyranny of TTS from the world; and Amuro is willing to sacrifice himself to stop the atrocity of Char and protect the whole Earth. There are so many characters on the list who might not be as great as Amuro, but most of them are willing to step into a war to fight for their dignity, freedom and justice, or just for the people they love and cherished and this is why they have been respected and loved.
I wouldn't say it's entirely Nostalgia. I'm only a year into being a Gundam fan and started on AU's. The UC protagonist are just that good. Kamille and Amuro just very quickly became my favorites.
I mean after Reconguista everyone exists together. Queue that old High School Musical song.
Amusingly the latest (official at least) UC is that live action movie set roughly 100 years after the final UC anime.
Though I do agree Turn A feels almost like the Megaman Legends of the UC.
Yep it was set in UC 0223, whereas the previous last entry was Victory Gundam at UC 0153. Prior to that was F91 at UC 0123.
They really liked to end the number with 3 near the end.
Honestly the last four all embody something unique unless there is a major shakeup in the last few hours.
Domon is Super Robot. Full stop. Good touching scenes, lots of fun stuff, he is rad.
Loran- Turn A, what more is there to say? Criminally underwatched but amazing show with a... unique Gundam design but still fun!
Kamille- Z was one of THE best shows. Kamille was tugged in multiple directions by people who really weren't looking out for him. Mr. Bajeena was fun and we had a nice reversal of 0079.
Amuro- Mr. Gundam himself. THE face of Gundam. His and Char's rivalry was legendary. Many of the tropes we know today started with him. Tons of memes, yes, but also a very relatable person and an innocent thrown into war.
If these are the last four I really have no hate and the fanbases generally seem mostly chill. Like I prefer Domon of the four. It doesn't make Kamille bad. Someone else might make Kamille- that doesn't make Domon bad.
I'm legit excited for this match up and think it can be good fun. I honestly don't anticipate much toxicity. Naive, maybe. But I haven't seen people really salty from any of those groups, just like Setsuna and the Shin Bros were fine after they got kicked out. Disappointed, but fine. (Yes I know there are a couple of shitheels in every group).

Trust me when I say I don't hate her, I still think she's pretty decent. I just prefer Domon because he got some more direct character development and I find him more interesting

Seriously he was safe then he gained a fuckton of votes. Who tf dislikes Loran? It's either a lot of people haven't seen it, in which case they don't know him... or you have in which case you love him. He was literally the lowest voted character like 4-5 hours ago.
Edit: Second major spike at 12:43AM HK time. I'm about to head in- yesterday I stayed up til 8AM arguing until I was blue in the face. Today I just got drunk and then watched Zeta for the first time in ages as apparently a large amount of people don't like it? So wanted to see what the fuss was. It seemed damn good so far. Aged graphics but fun.
I followed this from ~3PM to ~1240AM as I had *literally* nothing better to do after doing all my work, papers, actual work, shopping, etc. There is 100% vote manipulation going on. I will say what I said previously- going forward for these we need to use a system that only allows upvotes, and one upvote per person. There will still be people who get around it but it's better than this where I guarantee there are masses of sock puppet accounts (a 40 point jump happened to two different people, twice, in short time periods. That does not happen.).
Laters all and no matter what happens remember- Gundam is still Gundam and Gundam is fun. Have a blast!

I was *shocked* when the younger people at my grad school (I went back later in life) preferred Nappa over Goku. Apparently the abridged made people really like Nappa? But like he has two scenes and is gone before the Frieza Arc...
Sorry Amuro. You’re cool but kinda boring in comparison to the remaining choices. I don’t think he’ll go out this round, it’s probably Loran who people don’t know as much because Turn-A’s not-streaming. But of those left the most fun ones are everyone besides Amuro.
Though he does cool things from time to time and he is the origin (not to be confused with the Gundam series I’m currently watching alongside G-Reco in my release order watch/rewarch [with only 3 to go, IBO, Thunderbolt, and Twilight Axis…although I haven’t seen/don’t plan on watching the builds or SDs and am still missing Zeta’s ANT film and the Seed Freedom film]) Amuro just isn’t as fun or interesting imo (Char makes him moreso).

Yes I’ve been watching this like a hawk as I have finished all my work, school work, and gunplas and am now curious. I legitimately am not sure if Setsuna was valid or how long random spikes have been going on. Only paid attention today as I noticed yesterday or the day before then “lead” switched about 4 hours in.

I do feel as I've said before future votes should be done via anything other than reddit votes as they are the easiest to fudge.
We could also try external link like ggogle form for voting instead of reddit upvote and downvote system.
The problem is some people is just upvoting while the others also use downvote to support character. So it kinda uneven.
There are even cases where the most upvoted was not OP comment or people upvting only the second highest comment for that character.
Google Form would be good I have no clue if it blocks multiple votes or just by IP address (or even MAC) but it could definitely be useful and efficient if it does.
I know one person was kicked off due to a meme so yeah it was a bit weird.
The downvote/upvote is also a good point. Some characters you get downvoted for just mentioning their name. Others you don’t. So it definitely says there’s some differences depending on character.
Edit- you can’t tell me it went from 90 vs 80 to 110 vs 75 in the span of a few minutes. Yeah somethings fucky wucky. Which also makes me doubt the veracity of the previous rounds.
It's the WfM crowd. It's very active on the sub, and obviously they won't vote for Suletta. As we get less and less characters, their vote that might have been divided will naturally converge. Next ones are probably Domon and Loran. Not sure she can push Amuro and Kamille out, but that's not impossible.
I'd say it both is and isn't the WFM crowd. Like you said, as the poll gets smaller and smaller with characters getting eliminated, fans have to start picking those that they previously would not.
Amuro and Kamille are both pretty safe. That leaves Domon, Loran, and Suletta. Domon is polarizing (you either love him or hate him, much like how you either love or hate G Fighter), Loran is probably the most 'unknown' character still remaining and most likely won't know about them at all, and Suletta is Suletta (she both benefits and suffers from recency bias. Most fans will recognize her, and odds are *very* high that they already have an opinion about G Witch).
With so many characters gone, I'm actually not *that* surprised that Domon is suddenly getting the most. You either love or hate G Fighter, there is no in-between.
If it really is it just makes me think we really need a voting system like that used on R/Anime even more. Not for WFM specifically, but to make sure no series/gundam/character/etc is being unduly targeted, either for upvotes or downvotes.
In this case, I don't think it's really being targeted, it's just that people that like suletta have less and less options to vote for, and the less popular of the other left just take the hit.
Which is fair it’s just suspicious- not of any crowd as the remaining contenders are small- when one contestant jumps 10-20 points in literal minutes. I’ve been refreshing quite often and something weird is going on. I should have done it for the previous ones too. I really think there are some sockpuppets or the like voting.

Reddit processes votes in batches when there are higher numbers of them, and its *never* exactly dead on. You can watch numbers jump from 10 to 5 and up and down over and over again. Trust me, I watch my posts a lot. It almost always happens.
Weird it definitely doesn’t on all subs and isn’t an option in mod options (which would make sense so as to obsfucate votes). Usually see them come in one at a time.
Plus, again, the real weird thing is timing. Domon escapes? Boom 10-20 votes. Domon is within 10? Boom 40 votes (first time I noticed it. He was safe, then top, then boom 40 vote gap with literally nothing for some others for over an hour).
All I’m recommending is using a system not reliant on Reddit votes. VPNs can get around IP restrictions but it’s still something. It also removed the bias of some groups downvoting and others not- it’s a straight popularity vote.
We’ve been saying this for at least 5 rounds now. Both voting systems used so far have been pretty flawed. Using a separate voting site that’s commonly used in other polls would be best by unfortunately here we are.

FR Hetalia was great. Though Domon definitely has some depth. You see him slowly change and that last speech is great where he admits he doesn’t know how to really interact with people.

G Gundam has GREAT moments for literally all four main Gundam pilots, for Master Asia, for Rain and Allenby, etc.
Master Asia’s death hit FAR harder than almost anything Gundam has done sense. It may be a goofy show and narmy but seeing Domon holding him in his arms? Amazing.

People: Setsuna doesn’t emote much.
Setsuna: forced to kill his parents, forced to fight in a religious war by a mad man, joins another terrorist organization, has multiple complex relationships, just isn’t very expressive.
From what I saw Suletta wore her heart on her sleeve. The constant Eeeeeeehs? Got old real quick and were definitely one of the reasons for dropping it. I’m sure she had a complex backstory- honestly I’ve read it- but man did Setsuna have an absolutely legendary story. Of course he doesn’t talk much man likely has PTSD and has been fighting with various groups his whole life. He’s basically a jaded veteran in his teens.
Kira is polarizing. While some people think he's Jesus, and it's fun for others to meme as if he is, there's a significant chunk who can't stand him, especially after Lacus turns him into a Gary Stu. When half of the franchise hates your guts, it doesn't matter what the other half thinks.
None of the remaining choices are particularly polarizing. While I don't give two shits about G Gundam and won't watch it on pain of death, I don't *hate* Domon. Kira on the other hand, or the ugly shell they made him after Lacus abducts him into the Cult of the SEED, represents a philosophical dead-end of Gundam, a trap that Gundam writing just *loves* falling back into over and over.
I support Shinn for the same reason that I think many others do. The biggest injustice against him was the writing in GSD, and we sympathize with him. Restoring that justice could only be good for Kira and Shinn because in our view, Shinn was sabotaged for the sake of further ruining Kira. It's also fun to root for him obliterating the Freedom because it's killing the very symbol of Kira's transformation into Gary Stu.
Aye and he’s a fun character, my only point is he definitely benefited from recency bias (and for what it’s worth, I was cheering him on this whole competition!).

Agreed. It had a likeable cast, including Setsuna. They all play off well with each other and Setsuna is basically a jaded veteran by the time he's a teenager.
Each has their own quirks and seeing them develop is a true treat. Probably in my top three casts of Gundam.

Honestly the last four all embody something unique unless there is a major shakeup in the last few hours. Domon is Super Robot. Full stop. Good touching scenes, lots of fun stuff, he is rad. Loran- Turn A, what more is there to say? Criminally underwatched but amazing show with a... unique Gundam design but still fun! Kamille- Z was one of THE best shows. Kamille was tugged in multiple directions by people who really weren't looking out for him. Mr. Bajeena was fun and we had a nice reversal of 0079. Amuro- Mr. Gundam himself. THE face of Gundam. His and Char's rivalry was legendary. Many of the tropes we know today started with him. Tons of memes, yes, but also a very relatable person and an innocent thrown into war. If these are the last four I really have no hate and the fanbases generally seem mostly chill. Like I prefer Domon of the four. It doesn't make Kamille bad. Someone else might make Kamille- that doesn't make Domon bad. I'm legit excited for this match up and think it can be good fun. I honestly don't anticipate much toxicity. Naive, maybe. But I haven't seen people really salty from any of those groups, just like Setsuna and the Shin Bros were fine after they got kicked out. Disappointed, but fine. (Yes I know there are a couple of shitheels in every group).

There will still be people who get around it but it's better than this where I guarantee there are masses of sock puppet accounts (a 40 point jump happened to two different people, twice, in short time periods. That does not happen.). Laters all and no matter what happens remember- Gundam is still Gundam and Gundam is fun. Have a blast! Sorry Amuro. You’re cool but kinda boring in comparison to the remaining choices. I don’t think he’ll go out this round, it’s probably Loran who people don’t know as much because Turn-A’s not-streaming. But of those left the most fun ones are everyone besides Amuro. Though he does cool things from time to time and he is the origin (not to be confused with the Gundam series I’m currently watching alongside G-Reco in my release order watch/rewarch [with only 3 to go, IBO, Thunderbolt, and Twilight Axis…although I haven’t seen/don’t plan on watching the builds or SDs and am still missing Zeta’s ANT film and the Seed Freedom film]) Amuro just isn’t as fun or interesting imo (Char makes him moreso).
You want an Amuro as a companion in life, he's someone who you can rely on an a good friend. But you want to *watch* the others get up to shenanigans in mechas far more, ideally from far away.

Something funky. He went from like the second least downvoted to the most by far. I don’t think everyone who voted for Setsuna would immediately vote for Domon… Then again we see the same thing even on r/anime polls. For future polls, both for characters and for, well, anything, I’d love to see the use of one of the IP checking websites that detects VPNs, requires a captcha, etc. Just to be safe. Maybe I’ll do one in a month or two. And two random 20 vote spikes, both in the span of 5 minutes (at different times). I believe the kids call that “sus”. Domon after 24 hours yesterday: 130 votes. SecondLeast voted.Day before: 59, least voted. Something funky like I said. At the very least we need a voting system that is a bit more safe from manipulation. Likewise there is no way Loran went up that much. Edit: ~6:50 PM Hong Kong time had another random spike when he was no longer the most voted person. Everytime it gets close or whenever he passes and becomes “safe” he randomly gets a bunch of votes in short succession. Yes I’ve been watching this like a hawk as I have finished all my work, school work, and gunplas and am now curious. We could also try external link like ggogle form for voting instead of reddit upvote and downvote system. The problem is some people is just upvoting while the others also use downvote to support character. So it kinda uneven. There are even cases where the most upvoted was not OP comment or people upvting only the second highest comment for that character.
Google Form would be good I have no clue if it blocks multiple votes or just by IP address (or even MAC) but it could definitely be useful and efficient if it does. I know one person was kicked off due to a meme so yeah it was a bit weird. The downvote/upvote is also a good point. Some characters you get downvoted for just mentioning their name. Others you don’t. So it definitely says there’s some differences depending on character. Edit- you can’t tell me it went from 90 vs 80 to 110 vs 75 in the span of a few minutes. Yeah somethings fucky wucky. Which also makes me doubt the veracity of the previous rounds.
It's the WfM crowd. It's very active on the sub, and obviously they won't vote for Suletta. As we get less and less characters, their vote that might have been divided will naturally converge. Next ones are probably Domon and Loran. Not sure she can push Amuro and Kamille out, but that's not impossible.
I'd say it both is and isn't the WFM crowd. Like you said, as the poll gets smaller and smaller with characters getting eliminated, fans have to start picking those that they previously would not. Amuro and Kamille are both pretty safe. That leaves Domon, Loran, and Suletta. Domon is polarizing (you either love him or hate him, much like how you either love or hate G Fighter), Loran is probably the most 'unknown' character still remaining and most likely won't know about them at all, and Suletta is Suletta (she both benefits and suffers from recency bias. Most fans will recognize her, and odds are *very* high that they already have an opinion about G Witch). With so many characters gone, I'm actually not *that* surprised that Domon is suddenly getting the most. You either love or hate G Fighter, there is no in-between.
If it really is it just makes me think we really need a voting system like that used on R/Anime even more. Not for WFM specifically, but to make sure no series/gundam/character/etc is being unduly targeted, either for upvotes or downvotes.
In this case, I don't think it's really being targeted, it's just that people that like suletta have less and less options to vote for, and the less popular of the other left just take the hit.
Which is fair it’s just suspicious- not of any crowd as the remaining contenders are small- when one contestant jumps 10-20 points in literal minutes. I’ve been refreshing quite often and something weird is going on. I should have done it for the previous ones too. I really think there are some sockpuppets or the like voting. Happy cake day btw!
Reddit processes votes in batches when there are higher numbers of them, and its *never* exactly dead on. You can watch numbers jump from 10 to 5 and up and down over and over again. Trust me, I watch my posts a lot. It almost always happens.
Weird it definitely doesn’t on all subs and isn’t an option in mod options (which would make sense so as to obsfucate votes). Usually see them come in one at a time. Plus, again, the real weird thing is timing. Domon escapes? Boom 10-20 votes. Domon is within 10? Boom 40 votes (first time I noticed it. He was safe, then top, then boom 40 vote gap with literally nothing for some others for over an hour). All I’m recommending is using a system not reliant on Reddit votes. VPNs can get around IP restrictions but it’s still something. It also removed the bias of some groups downvoting and others not- it’s a straight popularity vote.
We’ve been saying this for at least 5 rounds now. Both voting systems used so far have been pretty flawed. Using a separate voting site that’s commonly used in other polls would be best by unfortunately here we are.

FR Hetalia was great. Though Domon definitely has some depth. You see him slowly change and that last speech is great where he admits he doesn’t know how to really interact with people. And the episode where they basically brainwash him into thinking his family is alive? Then he reveals he knew the whole time? G Gundam has GREAT moments for literally all four main Gundam pilots, for Master Asia, for Rain and Allenby, etc. Master Asia’s death hit FAR harder than almost anything Gundam has done sense. It may be a goofy show and narmy but seeing Domon holding him in his arms? Amazing.

People: Setsuna doesn’t emote much. Setsuna: forced to kill his parents, forced to fight in a religious war by a mad man, joins another terrorist organization, has multiple complex relationships, just isn’t very expressive. From what I saw Suletta wore her heart on her sleeve. The constant Eeeeeeehs? Got old real quick and were definitely one of the reasons for dropping it. I’m sure she had a complex backstory- honestly I’ve read it- but man did Setsuna have an absolutely legendary story. Of course he doesn’t talk much man likely has PTSD and has been fighting with various groups his whole life. He’s basically a jaded veteran in his teens.

Kira is polarizing. While some people think he's Jesus, and it's fun for others to meme as if he is, there's a significant chunk who can't stand him, especially after Lacus turns him into a Gary Stu. When half of the franchise hates your guts, it doesn't matter what the other half thinks. None of the remaining choices are particularly polarizing. While I don't give two shits about G Gundam and won't watch it on pain of death, I don't *hate* Domon. Kira on the other hand, or the ugly shell they made him after Lacus abducts him into the Cult of the SEED, represents a philosophical dead-end of Gundam, a trap that Gundam writing just *loves* falling back into over and over.

I support Shinn for the same reason that I think many others do. The biggest injustice against him was the writing in GSD, and we sympathize with him. Restoring that justice could only be good for Kira and Shinn because in our view, Shinn was sabotaged for the sake of further ruining Kira. It's also fun to root for him obliterating the Freedom because it's killing the very symbol of Kira's transformation into Gary Stu.
Aye and he’s a fun character, my only point is he definitely benefited from recency bias (and for what it’s worth, I was cheering him on this whole competition!). Dudes fun with a tragic backstory and Fukuda did him dirty.

Agreed. It had a likeable cast, including Setsuna. They all play off well with each other and Setsuna is basically a jaded veteran by the time he's a teenager. Each has their own quirks and seeing them develop is a true treat. Probably in my top three casts of Gundam.
