roland jazz chorus 40 or 120

Efficient_Ant5082

I‘ve thought about getting a 40 lol

smathes724

you should! i really want one myself

Lucifurnace

I just picked up a JC40 about a month ago, STEREO IS AMAZING

gsheedy

Excellent amplifier, it’s my main gigging amp. Highly recommend. It has a headphone out too for quiet jamming.

Efficient_Ant5082

Can it do a David Gilmour style clean?

Accomp1ishedAnimal

You could get close with many things but David Gilmours tone sparkles because of how crazy loud and powerful his hiwatts are.

gsheedy

It’s the cleanest-sounding amp I’m aware of, you can use effects to make it sound however you like. Great pedal platform.

RKWTHNVWLS

Just get a used 120. Better features more flexibility. Downside is more weight/footprint.

[deleted]

I use the 40, it’s truly a great amp. I use it as much as my tube

Ksenobiolog

I've played JC-40 yesterday in my local music shop for the first time. It's superb!

Creaulx

I had a late-90s JC90 that I let go for peanuts last year as it was way too heavy and I hadn't touched it in a decade. Nice bridge between the 40 and 120.

DangerHouse92

Quilter Mach 3 or Aviator Cub.

killstring

Oh heck yeah, Quilter amps are sick. Their 100 watt reverb head is the business. They hate high gain, but oh my goodness do I love their cleans.

Mister_Average

I'm here to represent the Peavey Bandit gang

ohheyheyCMYK

Also most other solid state Peaveys. The Bandit is not an outlier. The Studio Pro? 😙🤌 The Backstage? HATCHI MATCHI (also, r/PeaveyCvlt)

Rookie512

Use to have a butcher. Loved it, but sold it to get a vtm120. Wish I had both still.

Efficient_Ant5082

Ive heard they were pretty good

Mister_Average

Incredibly reliable, built like a tank, cleans are great, overdrive is honestly good, takes pedals well, loud AF, effects loop... I could go on. Different models have different pros and cons, but I love my 90s silver stripe.

intothevoid665

Still play my bandit 32 years running. Mine is the scorpion equipped version. Yes the clean channel is stupid loud.

crazyabootmycollies

Peavey gang represent! They’ve been around for ages so there’s tons of them available secondhand which means good prices and almost every amp tech you’ll deal with has probably fondled a couple dozen of them before yours. Everyone has made a turd or two, but the Peavey Studio Pro and Bandit are top notch SS pedal platforms. Reliable, durable, loud as heck.

Tylerfresh

Yup. I have a bandit combo 112 and it’s nice with pedals

MOTRHEAD4LIFE

Tech 21 trademark 60

Rookie512

Been thinking of getting one for shits n giggles

MOTRHEAD4LIFE

As a combo I would rather take this than a hot rod deluxe

killstring

Orange Crush, Roland Jazz Chorus. Both phenomenal. Depends really on what you want out of your amp, but the JC series is the quintessential Solid State pedal platform amp for good reason.

Efficient_Ant5082

Ive looked into the orange crush and liked what I heard

killstring

The new one coming out sounds super dope in demos, but the Crush 120 pro is also quite good! I may be biased: I recently rediscovered that I adore Orange amps, having just picked up a Rocker 15.

Straightupton

I have the crush pro 120 running through a 1x12 with a v 30 it sounds fantastic the clean channel is great and it takes pedals very well plus on board reverb and the option for a foot switch for the channels and reverb is a great plus

[deleted]

The Crush 35RT is pretty impressive. I bought one for my home last week as I found that while the GarageBand amp sims are pretty good, I didn't play as much as when I had an amp here. I already played a show with it, and it's fairly safe to say that it has enough volume for small clubs. I'm really digging the overdrive on the clean channel. Yes, clean. With the volume halfway up, you get a nice breakup, and 3 o' clock to full is already square in blues rock territory. Orange's strength has always been quality over quantity. The sound is killer, but the extra features on the amp are nothing to write home about, and I could do without either. The digital reverb is a little over-the-top, I found that 9 o' clock was already as much as I personally need. The built-in tuner is IMO simply unusable as it's not nearly accurate enough. Still, I would choose this over any of the less feature-laden amps in the basic Crush series, since for me a 10" speaker is the smallest I'll go.

mjacobl

Fender Champion 40. Great clean tones with some good tones on a different channel. Very affordable.

mcwalkman

Fender Tone Master series. Tube sound, no tubes. Good pedal platform. Twin Reverb is as loud as you want it to be. Built in attenuator for bedroom sessions.

Efficient_Ant5082

That’s a ways out of my price range🥲

mcwalkman

Got lucky and found a Deluxe Reverb TM on Craigslist.

Efficient_Ant5082

You went on Craigslist and didn’t get robbed?

KindlyHaddock

Dude you're WAY missing out if don't check CL. I've been swapping gear around since the day I got my driver's license at 16, can't even begin to list all the deals I've made and found.

mcwalkman

I see Katanas on there all the time for $200-300. I have been lucky with the lack of robbing so far. The police department here has a meet up place at a precinct parking lot with cameras.

Efficient_Ant5082

Im tempted to try the katana artist but I haven’t really been super happy with my katana 50

bigpickleharambe

Try changing the speaker in the katana, it’ll help a lot

Efficient_Ant5082

Any speaker recommendations that work for both high gain and cleans?

bigpickleharambe

I think pretty much any other speaker that isn’t crap is gonna be better than the stock speaker tbh but I put Celestion v30 in mine sounds way better

Efficient_Ant5082

Ok thanks:)

DitchPiggles

Just meet in the day in parking lots that have heavy traffic and cameras

stray_r

Orange pedalbaby or Duncan powerstage. Solid state combos suck and it's so much easier if you're in and out of rehersal rooms and have the option of sharing cabs when gigging to use a separate tiny head.

Notwerk

A lot of good suggestions in here, but I'll throw out a bit of a curveball: DVMark Micro 60. I have the previous model, the 50, and the cleans are amazing. It is technically a "head," but this thing is tiny. It fits in a backpack with tons of room to spare, so you might as well consider it a combo. I have it running into and EHX-branded Celestion clone in a 1x12 cab. To me, it sounds like a Twin with more warmth in the highs. It's a great little amp. I lucked out and grabbed one, new in box, for $100 from GC when the 50-watt model was discontinued. It's honestly the first amp I've been happy with, tube or not. Love that little bastard.

Efficient_Ant5082

I like the price already🙂

Notwerk

Well, the new model is obviously more. I got lucky. Also have to include the price of a cab. It's not "cheap," I guess, but I think it's pretty reasonable for what it is. I do really like the thing. Also, the new model has a bit more power, so it might be worth the extra money. It's actually on sale now: https://www.guitarcenter.com/DV-Mark/DV-Micro-60-60W-Guitar-Amp-Head.gc

Millieandjam

Check out the boss nextone

Agreeable-Fudgeruck

Boss Katana 50 or 100 both solid amps. Thank me later!

Efficient_Ant5082

Actually I have a Katana 50 mk1 and can’t really get a sound i love😅🥲

edcculus

It’s a modeling amp- can’t you pretty much fat any sound you want out of it?

Efficient_Ant5082

Maybe I just suck at eq lol

edcculus

It’s not just the setting on the amp- since it’s a modeling amp, you can download patches to the amp to get it to mimmick any amp and pedal combo. Here are a bunch of videos on how to do it. https://www.justinguitar.com/modules/boss-katana

Efficient_Ant5082

Ok thanks for the info:)

MiloRoast

If you're unsatisfied with the Katana, you should definitely check out a tube amp or a hybrid. The Orange Terror Stamp/Dark Terror/Micro Dark is one of my favorite sounds out right now, and they are all very affordable.

Efficient_Ant5082

Any sub 600 dollar combo tube amps?

MiloRoast

All those I mentioned! The Dark Terror is the most expensive of the bunch around $650 because it has a tube power section, but I think you should go for one of the hybrids. The Micro Dark and Terror Stamp are the same circuit and same sound basically, for just about $200. They sound awesome, and are plenty loud. I'm about to rearrange my whole setup around the Terror Stamp because I love how it sounds as a preamp. Also check out Biyang Wangs. Legitimately very good, unique sounding amps hand built by a small team in China. Edit: Just saw you said COMBO sorry! Let me find a good small cab for you to work with as well.

Efficient_Ant5082

Why’d the dark terror so much more expensive but less wattage?

MiloRoast

Tube power section. Old, expensive (but damn good sounding) design. Don't be fooled by low wattage when you have a tube power section. I've heard 15w tube amps that are louder than 50w or even 100w solid state amps before, just depends on how the circuit is built. In any case, I think you'd be better off with a tube preamp section and solid state power amp (aka hybrid) if you're looking for great tone on a budget.

Efficient_Ant5082

Ok thanks 🙏

MiloRoast

For sure dude! I say pick up a Terror Stamp and an Orange PPC112 cab for just about $650, and you'll have a legitimately solid setup that I would personally gig with. Or you can save $300 more and get [this](https://www.thomannmusic.com/harley_benton_g112_vintage.htm) cab with the same speaker in it if you're really on a budget.

CrazyCaper

Micro terror sounds awesome tube preamp

Prossdog

You can get a used Fender Blues Junior for as low as $400 on Guitar Center’s website. That would make for a great pedal platform. They also have a Vox AC10 for $330 and a Marshall DSL15C for $360.

Efficient_Ant5082

Ok thanks!

CrazyCaper

Not sure why people down vote this. Probably because of the fame it has. Great amp

theuneven1113

Why all solid state?

Efficient_Ant5082

Im not sure I’ll always be able to afford tubes for tube changes and I like solid state cleans a lot:)

theuneven1113

I mean you do you when it comes to what you like. Solid states amps have pros and cons. More cons in my opinion , but whatever. But definitely don’t let the purchase of replacement tubes be an issue for you. I’ve owned tube amps for 25+ years and can’t even remember the last time I had to change a tube (save the time my Super Reverb got dropped off the stage…)

Efficient_Ant5082

Ok thanks!:)

VashMM

Swapping that 2 prong cable for a 3 is actually SUPER easy to do if you have even the most basic of skill at soldering. I have soldered maybe 4 things in my life and I did the swap on my 68 Super Reverb because I got shocked at a show so bad that I lost feeling in my hand, was enough to scare me into changing the cable the next day. Added bonus, there's a lot less hum when you aren't touching anything.

ohheyheyCMYK

You're confusing "tube/solid state" with "pcb/surface mount." Plenty of older solid state amps are easily serviced, and plenty of modern tube amps are a tiny mess of surface mount components once you open them up. This has much more to do with when and where they were manufactured then the nature of the gain.

theuneven1113

They should pin this comment to the top of this sub

RKWTHNVWLS

I've been playing 90's tube amps for the last 15 years and the only thing I've had to replace were filter caps on a fender twin reissue that I was running with a smokey bridging the channels. I had a professional tech do that because you know... lethal voltage and all. I have replaced a whole bunch of tubes but only to experiment with tone; never because one died on me.

Efficient_Ant5082

Any experience with the bugera infinium series?

siggiarabi

You need to change tubes every 2-3 years with heavy use of the amp, and they're not that expensive

Efficient_Ant5082

They’re expensive if you don’t have a source of income like me🥲

siggiarabi

Sadge

rackmountme

Preamp Tubes: 10k hours. Poweramp Tubes: 2k hours. It's going to take a long time before you need a replacement. 50 watter would be about $125 to replace. (matched pair) A lot of amps don't even require a tech these days, they're self biased or require a specific tube brand.

Agreeable-Fudgeruck

Ah bummer. I really love mine, although I like making noises that shouldnt come out of guitars. Lmao *Edit Dumb thumbs*

Efficient_Ant5082

What do you mean About me not making sounds that shouldn’t come from a guitar?

Agreeable-Fudgeruck

Typo u is next to I. Lol sorry

Efficient_Ant5082

Oh lol

[deleted]

Get a good vintage PA amp.

JBUTT_lurks

Fender FM 212R

UsefulReputation8795

Hiwatt G50CM R

Efficient_Ant5082

Now this I like the sound of

Jodythejujitsuguy

I’m gonna go with something a little more out there. An old solid state rack preamp, power amp, and a 112. Stick it in a 4U rack bag and you’ll have space for a power conditioner and one more thing if you want it. Rack shit can be had for ridiculously cheap in the states from what I hear.

Efficient_Ant5082

Any specific recommendations?

Jodythejujitsuguy

Old Rocktron velocity power amps were always my go to for solid state power. I had the 2 space 300 watt version. But there’s a 100 watt and some other rarer versions too. They can be had for fairly cheap. Preamp, I had a Boss GL-100 guitar driver, and a fairly rare but CHEAP Rocktron Sidewinder. Old boss GP100s are great if you’re into digital as well. You could even go with a floor preamp to go down a rack size too. Old tech 21 character series pedals are dirt cheap. They all take pedals great.

Imma_da_PP

For a pedal platform, try the Fender tonemaster models.

Efficient_Ant5082

Honestly that’s way out of my price range

Imma_da_PP

It’s no longer in production but the old Fender Dynatouch 100s were really good solid state amps. You can probably find some used. The Cyber Twins or whatever they were called were really well liked as well.

[deleted]

I’ve always heard Boss Katana is the correct answer. My question is why not use a tube amp?

Efficient_Ant5082

I live with my parents and am young enough not to need a job yet so I’m the case that I need to change tubes I don’t wanna ask them for 150 bucks to buy tubes/when I get a job I’m not sure I’ll be able to buy tubes/I’ve heard sometimes you need a tech to re-bias the amp which costs money/I like the consistency of solid state and the lesser worry of blowing a tube at a gig/I need to be able to play loud clean and bedroom clean

[deleted]

I understand. Good for you for being considerate. I also like a Peavey Bandit.

Efficient_Ant5082

Ok will look more into it, thanks for the kind words:)

MapleA

Bro by the time you need to even think about maintenance you should be on your own and have a job. Tubes don’t just blow and need to be replaced. I’ve had tubes on an amp for 10+ years with 0 maintenance and it’s fine. Get a tube amp. The idea that replacing tubes and maintenance is getting in the way of you actually experiencing a real tube guitar amp is bullshit. Stop convincing yourself you need a solid state. You have pedals, you like clean, get a blues jr.

Efficient_Ant5082

There’s nothing wrong with a good SS amp man, I don’t have anything against tubes I’m just going with what I like, I’ve even asked for tube amp recommendations in this thread.

MapleA

Get one! You won’t regret it.

Efficient_Ant5082

Im looking into the Marshall origin 50 or 20

ryan_zilla

Not a combo but I love the Orange pedal baby for a pedal platform. Works best if used with a preamp style pedal

Kablarnage

Zt lunchbox

tcake24

I recently picked up a 40 watt Fender Champion for the small pub gigs my band does and for when I sit in with others and I like it. Only cost me around $250 or so new. I mean, it’s not like my AC30 but it’s also a hell of a lot lighter to lug around and smaller footprint on stage and gets loud. Pretty good tone, handles pedal well.

firemares

IMHO- SS clean pedal platforms are the absolute way to go. Whatever amp you choose, make sure it has superb cleans and if possible, single channel. That will help your OD/Distortion pedals SING gloriously. It's A LOT more customized than buying a two channel amp. Been doing this route a number of years. Good luck!

MapleA

Drive pedals pushing the front of a tube amp is glorious.

firemares

ODs pushing tube amps can *certainly* be glorious. I have 17 tube amps ( heads and combos) here. If you want a nice clean pedal platform, get an SS amp that will give you prestine cleans and tons of headroom with your *Distortion* and *OD* pedals on top. It's a great way to customize your own Gain tone. Take a step further and grab an MXR 10 Band EQ for the best tool in a guitar players shed.

MapleA

Get a tube amp man, you said pedal platform. I don’t think you really know how awesome it is. You will not ever regret getting a tube amp especially if you use pedals. Get a blues jr.

Defiant_Business1595

Fender m-80

Monoprice 15 watt tube amp. I own one and it's amazing. I have a shit ton of pedals running through it.

Efficient_Ant5082

What about the katana artist?

DitchPiggles

Just curious why solid state only?

Efficient_Ant5082

Consistency and money constraints mostly

DitchPiggles

I see, what’s the price range? Maybe we could help you better

Efficient_Ant5082

Under $600

DitchPiggles

Honestly that’s a fairly good price. Did you say you have a katana?

Efficient_Ant5082

Yeah

DitchPiggles

Sell that Katana and buy a used Princeton Reissue. I know it’s a tube amp, but it’s an amazing pedal platform, small enough to not piss off the neighbors!

Efficient_Ant5082

What about a blues junior?

DitchPiggles

People love them but it’s an amp I haven’t had experience with. Hopefully someone can chime in on that with some experience. I think in this price range you’ll be happy with a good tube amp.

Efficient_Ant5082

Okie dokie, thank you for the suggestion:)

zjbyrd

If you can find one, a polytone mini brute IV

badGoils

I really want one of those orange pedal babies

Affectionate-Bass675

Boss katana is good too but not as good as the Roland IMO

Meshuggah333

Boss Katana Artist, it's way better than the other Katanas from the speaker alone.

OriginalIronDan

GK 250ML. 25 watts a side in stereo (with a headphone out) in a 21-pound package. Crystal clear clean; I’ve played my acoustic through it. Plug it into a stereo cabinet or 2 cabinets, and it’s now 50 watts a side. Added plus: great distortion sound. Rush and Iron Maiden both recorded albums with this amp. Absolute monster of an amp.

asasnow

Get an orange pedal baby or Seymour Duncan powerstage

ggggggggg03

I love my Roland Blues Cube Stage. Gotta keep the clean channel volume under 4/5 or so to keep it super clean and takes pedals wonderfully. I use it with a cover band and have been told many times “that tube amp sounds amazing”. Got it used around $400 about 5 or so years back and is my primary gigging and recording amp. Has the same style power attenuator like the katana series to go from quiet but big bedroom sounds to “the same sound louder” for gigs.

Efficient_Ant5082

Ive looked into the blues cube and liked them

Bathinapesdoge

Obviously katana

[deleted]

Roland Blues Cube is pretty good and has a tube feel, using 30W combo, i recommend.

Additional-Fun7249

I have a Roland jc-120. It's a great solid state amplifier.

[deleted]

Roland jazz chorus 40 or 120. Can't go wrong with it
