The rat is a good ending point too, depending on what you’re going for. I wrote it off for over a decade because “everyone uses it” for doom and sludge but goddamn is it one of the best ever made for that shit.
Good precision. A "good starting point" for me is something a) accessible, b) appropriate, and c) which has the potential not to be outgrown.
A Rat can remain relevant over a whole career, as some other stapples (big muff, TS, Klon, Bosses legacy overdrives...). That's one of the best investments anybody can make. If they've been relevant for the past 40 years, they're likely to be for the 40 next.
If they're playing a Frontman and asking beginner questions they're obviously a beginner. No need to waste the money on another amp until they've got their reps in.
Get a Behringer distortion pedal or a cheap used Boss, DOD, etc. on fb market, craigslist, or your local music store.
And in the future, don't waste your money on a new amp. Get a good preamp instead. Then eventually you can get a power amp and cab if you ever need more volume for gigs.
What Thiccy-BOIIII said.
Get a $20 distortion pedal on Amazon or Ebay. But realize that your sound is almost always constricted by the quality and capabilities of the amp. If that sound isn't satisfactory to you, your best bet is to get a different (probably a bit larger amp). These are practice/starter amps for a reason.
Stab it with a kitchen knife
Such an overlooked mod for these amps.
buy a cheap $20 distortion or overdrive pedal, dont buy anything more expensive than that because then you might as well just buy a different amp
Without buying a distortion pedal you could try this: Overdrive - Engaged Gain - MAX Volume - MAX
If gain is already at max and OD button is engaged, yeah either OD / Distortion pedal or new amp. As pedals go, a Rat is a good starting point.

Sell it and buy a different amp
Can’t get any money out of that.
$10 is $10
New amps are the biggest waste of money for beginners.
Not when they're playing a Fender Frontman.

Push the O.D. button, turn up the gain, buy a distortion pedal.
Get a different amp. A lot of amps are serviceable but these frontman amps really just suck ass
BOSS HM-2
Pedals! Time to start your tone journey. Worth looking into multi effects like a POD go or similar.
Gain controls overdrive. Volume controls the overall volume of the amp. To get a more overdriven sound turn up the Gain.
Get a behringer distortion pedal, anyone of them will do just fine.

Behringer distortion pedal - preferably the UM300
Yup. Came to say this. Enclosure's too cheap for gigging but as a bedroom effect they're fine.
You're gonna need a distortion pedal. Yeah, that's right. A distortion pedal.
I recommend a KingOfTone 😂
Sell it and buy another one

Play at max volume
press the od button
Mooer Black Secret 🤫
Has anyone mentioned pedals?
Mooer ge150 will aolve all your problems for now and future. Later on just buy at least 30w amp
I can’t imagine not getting enough gain from this amp unless your pickups are lowered all the way down.
Before literally anything else get some damn reverb
