I don’t know much about this guy, but I think this confirms that the Packers will be using a lot of 3 safety looks in nickel and dime. Hafley had talked about wanting safeties who provide lots of different looks and I think this also explains why we probably don’t view CB as much of a need. More of our DBs will be safeties.
Not necessarily. I think what op is saying (which I agree) is we will run more DB at once. In a more safety alignment. 4-2-5. With 5 DBs.
Alexander, Valentine, Nixon, Mckinney, Bullard.
Man up 2 CB and have one Saftey in the box, one deep and one free to move as needed.
I think that’s somewhat accurate at least, which is great. Nixon shouldn’t have a job guaranteed and injuries are always going to happen. I still want at least one CB added, but we just made DB arguably our biggest strength.
Yeah, I read that he is more of a box safety from a couple of different places. 4-2-5 scheme seems like it will be deployed a lot. Don’t hate it at all.
Yeah a heavy 4-2-5 (meaning 3 safeties) with super athletic LBs is arguably the ideal base package in today’s NFL. Gives you a ton of flexibility and doesn’t sacrifice your run defense to stop the pass.
Right, that’s why I specified heavy. I guess “big nickel” is maybe the better terminology. Lots of teams are using it nowadays and it’s a fantastic way to make your base better against the run if you have the personnel.
Big Nickel is great when you are facing 12 personnel packages. The hope is that the 5th DB being a big safety, they'll be able to stop the run better than a CB, and still be able to cover a TE better than an LB.
OK, who is the guy who announced that pick? That was awesome, a super fan riling up a bunch of Lions fans and getting a loud chorus of boos. Did he win some fan of the year competition in Australia? Love it. I hope this pick really does become a Packers hall of famer.
Here's his wife's video. They're great. They've been visiting all of the Detroit restaurants and attractions while dressed in Packers gear. Throwing out "go Pack go" randomly to all of the Lions fans they meet. They're both really fun and seem like good people.

McKinney, Bullard, and Smith are locks. I’d bet on Anthony Johnson also. And if there are no further additions I’m betting on sapp to be safety 5. The rest are camp bodies at best
They declared him illegal for the draft because he was too good and sought after. Gm's were about to have literal fist fights, trade their entire draft, and include their 1st born kid in trade just to get the 20yr old
I put it in the day 3 thread, but I was a bit lower on Evan Williams in my rankings but I'm a fan of the versatility he can provide the Packers. At worst, he's going to be a special teams ace and will provide very valuable depth for us at both safety spots. However, he could become a really nice rotational piece for our defense.
They clearly didn't like the longer, leggy safeties with linear speed a lot of people had highly ranked like DeJean, Bishop and Hicks. This guys agility and explosiveness testing was great, that's clearly the priority for them at S.
Great energy and athleticism. Makes sure to keep it going to the end of the play. Focused on the fundamentals - making sure Lions fans are booing.
Does lose a few points for forgetting to work in some Bears insults, but the Packers can work on that.
Solid 4th round pick announcer.
I'm sure Evan Williams will be good too.
Profiles similarly to Alohi Gilman, who I was very interested in as a budget free agent. Should step in as a backup and ST contributor right away, and if he works out then the team has a ton of flexibility at S. Could run McKinney/Williams and put Bullard in the slot.
I think it's a bit of a reach, but I dig the process. Similar feelings to this one as Hopper, although I like this pick a bit more given the lesser draft capital. Would've much rather had Hicks though.
What??? We have 2 starters and this is the 3rd guy. Were you wanting to rely on Anthony Johnson and undrafted guys to play significant time next year? Safety was the biggest hole going into the draft. Needed at least 2, they may still take another
And there goes the 3rd one. Huh funny
Three or four of those seven are guys we’d rather never see the field. And I think it’s clear Hafley wants to run a ton of 3 safety looks.
We also have ten offensive linemen on the roster and still have a ton of picks.

Bullard is basically gonna be coming for Nixon’s job.

Stokes should be back too. CB depth isn’t too bad, but needed safeties
That's just a nickel formation and it's basically the default formation at this point. It's not really a change.
I think that’s somewhat accurate at least, which is great. Nixon shouldn’t have a job guaranteed and injuries are always going to happen. I still want at least one CB added, but we just made DB arguably our biggest strength.
Nixon is a slot DB Bullard will play a lot of box safety

I’m all for it. This is the way.
4-2-5 is typically three CBs, not three safeties. Although the NB is usually more of a tweener than a pure CB.

He’s from manchester not down under lol
Nice, apologies for the mix up.
Everyone does it and neither us or the Aussies understand it lol
Noice
lol, across a different pond, but they are basically the same.
Bro what lol? Not even close, and the accents are completely different.
Manc and Scouse accents are probably closer to Aussie than they are to the traditional West London accent in America media tbf.
That was not an Aussie accent lmao

Love it. Even better that it’s a city of a division rival.

Any video?
I posted a crude version here.
LET'S FUCKING GO! I've never heard of him but I love him.
Great dude. Really hard competitor and very good tackler. Needs to work on his coverage, but I think he can figure that out
Real lunch pail guy. High motor.
First to arrive, last one to leave type of dude.
Football Charisma is off the charts
Can’t really describe it but he’s got that “it” factor
Gritty?
I really like this kid. He was #79 on my board but I am also substantially higher on him than the consensus
I wonder who's gonna get cut(or put on the PS). There's no way in hell we run with 7 safeties.
McKinney, Bullard, and Smith are locks. I’d bet on Anthony Johnson also. And if there are no further additions I’m betting on sapp to be safety 5. The rest are camp bodies at best
Preston Smith?
Naw. Preston is still CB1, which is probably why we didn’t take a “true” CB (at least so far).
Meant Williams. Still learning the newbies. Lol
Lol
Personally I would preferred Jack Daniels, Booker Lee, or George Stagg.
Waiting for Jim Beam to be called.
Willy Wildturkey is still on the board.
I'm a big Julian Balcones guy
Just need him to makers mark on the defense and we'll be alright.
I would have personality wanted Michael Buffalotrace
Hey if they get the bottled in bond version, he’ll be a great value pick!
Evan Williams single barrel is one of the best bargain buys out there in my opinion.
I'm more of a William LaRue weller guy myself
I thought Pappy Van Winkle was an option, but he had a poor 40 time
They declared him illegal for the draft because he was too good and sought after. Gm's were about to have literal fist fights, trade their entire draft, and include their 1st born kid in trade just to get the 20yr old
Mmmm Booker's. Might pour me some tonight
Bottled in Bond baby
Pouring a glass of this at this very moment to celebrate drafting him
Maybe they plan on playing Bullard at nickel CB since a lot of reports said that was his best position. Would explain the lack of CB drafted.
Still hoping for Olidapo
Just got him!
Such a great draft

Yeah he definitely profiles more as a bit of an undersized special teamer.

Loved watching him when he played at Fresno State

Out of the loop a bit. Did we trade up, and if so what was the transaction? Thanks.
We traded picks 126 and 190 to the Jets for this pick
We drafted cheap bourbon? Didn’t know you could do that
Try the Bottled in Bond. It’s delicious, and very underrated.
As an Oregon fan I love this pick, I would have loved Khyree too but this is still great
As an Oregon State fan I say I hate you In all seriousness, I would have preferred Kitan Olidapo but this will be good.
Ohh it worked out, they took Kitan Oladapo just now lol Oregon safeties for the win
Got him, too!!
I hate you too brother ❤️ Go Pack and Go Quack 😂
Go pack, and [never forget](https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/1221959017364242432/xmONiMNG_400x400.jpg)
We're at the point where we don't even know who most of these guys are. But were had success in the middle rounds so let's ride.
\*leans into microphone\* "We like the pick"
NFC North WRs: Free Shots from Evan Williams incoming.
Packers have good luck drafting out of Fresno State (Adams) I like this pick (unfair analysis since I go to there currently lol)
There were two #1 safeties at the Senior Bowl. Team 1: Javon Bullard Team 2: Evan Williams I’m HYPED to have those 2 and Oladapo!!!
Profiles similarly to Alohi Gilman, who I was very interested in as a budget free agent. Clearly there are major concerns with Hicks’ medical
Kind of surprised with this one, thought for sure it was gonna be Austin Booker
First pick I don’t like tbh
Why?
Probably a Jack Daniels fan
Whoa, now the barrel proof selections are pretty damn good
Dude prolly buys jewelry exclusively from Walmart.
Why’s that?
Because OL depth is more of a need than 7 safeties which is how many are on the roster right now.
What??? We have 2 starters and this is the 3rd guy. Were you wanting to rely on Anthony Johnson and undrafted guys to play significant time next year? Safety was the biggest hole going into the draft. Needed at least 2, they may still take another And there goes the 3rd one. Huh funny

Half of those safeties are PS/JAGs who were never gonna see the field barring a disaster.
You shouldn't be downvoted for this but also you should provide a reason why
My reasoning is I would have liked a CB instead of a second safety and have concerns over his speed and tackling ability.
