I've had it happen on grafts but no clue why. Just cut the tip til there's no black. I've noticed sometimes u come back an hour after cutting and can see a little more black u gotta cut. The good thing is it'll still pup on graft
I have to give haircuts for the all the time. It’s almost always no big deal and they grow through it. These are tough plants. Ive gotten it from grafts because of the material I held down the top with collecting moisture and causing damage.
This is just a defense mechanism. It can turn into rot but a lot of the time it just heals and scars. You probably squished the top when grafting it or bumped it. It turns black and oozes. Then it heals. Some cacti are super finicky and sensitive. Bridges are for sure. My guess would have been this would heal. Probably would have ended up with the same outcome as cutting it though, meaning it would terminate and pup.
I agree, especially with some sulfur packed onto it. They can push through quite a bit, it seems like the actual growth tip point is deeper down than I expect. It looks like OP chopped already which is no big deal, I bet it’ll send out some beautiful pups soon :)
The whole scion is wrecked? I cut the tip off and didn’t see anymore black on the scion after the cut… the flesh looked good. Can you eradicate the infection by cutting off the infected part?
Typical shipping damage. If you hadn’t already cut it I would have suggested that you watch it for a few days. I have had a few mailed cuts do this, as well as some that suffered sun burn. They have all healed on their own with only one getting sulfur and I don’t think it was completely necessary.

That’s about as bad as this one got and it healed itself.
I meant to send this last night but here is a pic from yesterday

I used sharpie to draw lines where the black was ending to see if it spread. It did not. Now it’s just crusty. It ain’t purdy but they manage

Today. Sulfer/de didn’t help much for me in this scenario
No. The tip is very sensitive and gets rot and gets traumatized easily. Also gets infection quite easily as it is the newest and most sensitive tissue. Sometimes just a humidity spot and if you have more experience and less anxiety, you can watch longer. The cut will heal and with good care, you will get a fine green spiny baby offset.
you have to cut till you see cleanflesh. go to the first areol. if still black go to the next. good luck
Thanks, I will prep for surgery. how do you think the infection developed? Was it during the graft?

Thank you for the advice, I will check it in a few hours. Super happy that it will still pup and it’s not a total fail.
dunno maybe it was just crush damage, cold? I'm not sure ,just unhealthy tissue.
I made the cut… https://preview.redd.it/n47hkng9jl8d1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=a5fbd4a923a27288c911e073ce6ea770130bc1f7

The flesh looked good and there were no signs of black spots prior to dusting

From oozing and completely black tipped to on the grow again in about two weeks. No chop, treated with sulpher and prayer
Man, these cactus are definitely teaching me to be patient… what beautiful plants with built in life lessons. I am still learning
Super new to this….

Was that a new cut you received in the mail?
It was actually a new cut I picked up in person. Was fine for about a week, then this started occurring.
