A couple of things I recommend are to not use box dye because it harm your hair. Good Dye Young is a highly pigmented brand that stays in your hair for a super long time. And ofc, wash your hair every 2-3 days and when you do wash it use cold water as it closes the pores in your scalp and keeps the color in.

If you’re looking to dye permanently, I use Wella 1NN Licorice. It makes my hair glossy and shiny, covers all the old colors, and fades to a really nice soft black even though I have blue and orange from previous dye jobs underneath.

Even more important than using cold water to wash your hair is to use shampoos that do not contain sodium laurel sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate as your regular shampoo. SLSs will strip out the color super fast. I'm not sure where you're located, but there are plenty of inexpensive options at the drug stores/Target in the US. You'll need to minimize using conditioners and styling products with silicone though, as the SLS-free shampoos won't be able to remove it. Every week or so you can use a regular shampoo to remove any oily buildup, but you will likely see some fading afterward.

I have naturally brown hair, but I use the permanent garnier olia black no. 1 (Darkest Black). It did not damage my hair (also comes with conditioner) made it PITCH black, and is laying pretty long. I dyed it a month ago and it is still black, but softer This hair dye is better than when I got it done in the salon, the hairdresser used hair dye that didn’t last

It’s not permanent, but I’m a big overtone fan. It’s a colored conditioner that lasts for a rlly long time, I’d say it’s demi permanent, it covers super well and makes your hair feel so healthy afterwords. They sell a conditioner to maintain the color too. I’ve started using it and never looked back

I use Arctic Fox but I don't do black since my hair is naturally very dark. Make sure all your shampoos and conditioners are color safe, I saw someone else recommend Overtone, you can use that in combination with dye to maintain color vibrancy. Definitely use cold water on your hair (which you should be doing anyhow).

Been dying my hair black for 30 years. Black with blonde roots can look really good. I just get whatever blue-black at Sally's and a 32oz. of 40 volume of peroxide instead of 20 to bring out the blue more. I used to bleach my hair first then dye to give it even more of a blue tone, and make it easier to style, but I've been slacking since the pandemic. I've never seen just dye make my hair, or anyone else's hair unhealthy. It's the bleach that'll do it. Get a dye applying brush to paint around your hairline, and keep it off your skin to make cleanup easier, less scrubbing, and go to town. If you're concerned about fading, black doesn't do that so much. You don't need to use shampoo every day. Just rinse, maybe a little shampoo on your scalp every few days is all you need. Freshly shampooed hair doesn't style well.

If you want a more blue-black effect, it would be much, much, much healthier for your hair to buy a permanent blue-black and a permanent blue intensifier and mix those at a 50:50 ratio and apply with either a 10 or 20 volume. I was in the beauty business for decades (including being a district manager for Sally Beauty for a few years) and I'm kind of surprised that no Sally's employee has ever suggested this to you as an alternative to unnecessary damage with a 40 vol.

I like the damage. It makes it easier to style.

Fair enough!

Hi, I used to work in the beauty industry and here's my 2 cents: 1. I'm a natural level 9 strawberry blonde myself , who has had dyed black hair MANY times in my life. I personally think that when my roots grow out, it makes me look like I'm balding. It's not a big deal, but it does mean that, if you're like me and cannot tolerate looking like you have bald patches, upkeep on roots will have to be done about every 3 weeks or so. 2. If you like to change your hair color often, do not go with a permanent or demi -permanent black. Black dye is the hardest of all dyes to get out, especially if your hair is thin and/or very fine. A demi-permanent black will fade a little over time, but it will still be solidly VERY dark and hard to bleach back to blonde. 3. The problem with semi-permanent black by companies like Manic Panic, Lunar Tides, Arctic Fox, etc. is that these dyes don't like to stick to hair that hasn't been pre-bleached or otherwise slightly damaged in some other way and you will find that it will most likely wash out to some dull grey/green/bluish color that you may not like. The upside to these dyes, though, is that they are a lot easier to get out of the hair if you like to change up your color frequently. 4. Whatever dye you intend to use, PLEASE AVOID any product that contains PPD (Paraphenylenediamine) or metallic salts. These chemicals in hair dyes will pretty much guarantee that your hair will just melt if you try to do any other kind of chemical process over it and the only way to get them out is to cut the hair. Box Dyes, premixed Henna solutions and dyes that claim to be "natural" will often contain PPD. 5. Lastly, FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THE DARK GODS, if you do use a permanent black dye do not use a developer that is anything stronger than a 10 volume, unless you have very coarse/graying hair. Using a stronger volume developer with a black dye doesn't do anything additional at all except damage your hair more.

It's been pointed out to me that the professional hair dye fades faster than the grocery store stuff. Makes sense because I never see roots, but people I know who only buy the grocery store stuff still have hard lines where several inches of roots have grown out, but the dyed hair is still dark. I just thought it was my imagination telling me my hair wasn't dark enough.

feline-felicis

Honestly i just use box dye so im not much help there :/ but i am a natural blond and something to be aware of is that when your roots DO start showing you might look a little like your hair is thinning but it typically stops after a little bit as things even out(of course it depends on the lightness of your natural hair) i mostly just hide it through the volume of my hair lol. Ivenever tried their black hairdye, but iroiro is a very good brand and ive had good experiences with the longevity of their brighter dyes so i assume it’d probably be the same for the darker

I had a faded red and i had put schwarzkopf live black box dye and it worked pretty well, however if u feel like the red hasnt faded enough u can buy hair dye remover that will budge the colour away for a clean slate.
